It was a warm day of Newleaf, and Lightpaw had just returned from her first hunting patrol. She was feeling a bit dejected because she hadn't caught anything. While the day was pleasant, the brown and cream she-cat couldn't find it in her to appreciate the day now. She wanted something to distract her from her disappointment, and Lightpaw suddenly remembered that she hadn't really spoken to her friend Skypaw since her naming at the ceremony. She walked over to the apprentice's den, searching for her new friend.

Skypaw was resting outside the den, having recently returned from the early morning border patrol. His spirits had been low as he had been mourning the loss of the former deputy, his mentor. As of yet, no other warrior had been assigned to him to complete his training. Could I ever become a warrior without proper training? The thought compounded his grief.
As Lightpaw approached the den, her tail shot up with happiness. Skypaw was there! She bounded over but stopped short as she took in the other apprentice's expression. He didn't look too happy, and Lightpaw disliked that her own bad mood was reflected in the eye of her friend. "Hi Skypaw," she said casually, plopping herself down beside the tom. "What's up?"

"Oh, nothin' much," Skypaw replied. He swatted at a leaf that was laying on the ground in front of him. "Now that I don't have a mentor I get all the dirty jobs. I spent all this morning cleaning out the elder's den, building new nests, and..." he wrinkled his nose, "using mouse bile to remove their ticks. This is the first time I got to myself." He sighed wishing he could be training. "So what did you do this morning?"
Lightpaw slid down until she was laying, swatting at his tail half-heartedly as she listened to his complaints. His morning sounded lousier than her own. "That sucks, Skypaw." She put all her heart into her words. "I went on my first hunting patrol since I got my apprentice name. Didn't catch anything. Just bumbled around and scared off all the prey."
Lightpaw sighed and rolled onto her back, staring up at the sky dejectedly. "I'm not very good at this apprentice thing. Anyway, I'm sorry about Lemonspeckle. I hope you're alright. Do you know when you'll be reassigned?" The she-cat looked over to Skypaw from the corner of her eye, hoping she hadn't hurt his feelings on accident.

Skypaw let out a deep sigh and rolled onto his back too. He missed Lemonspeckle. Not only had he been his mentor, he had looked up to him as a father figure. "I don't know when I'll get a new mentor. Maybe at the next ceremonies."
For some reason talking to Lightpaw made him feel just a little bit better. "I wouldn't worry too much about your first hunting trip. Most first timers don't catch anything. I didn't until my third time and that was a mouse."
The brown and cream cat watched as Skypaw rolled over beside her. She twitched an ear sympathetically. Lightpaw wasn't close with her own mentor yet, but she could empathize with being held back. "Yeah, hopefully then." When the other apprentice tried to make her feel better about her failure of a hunt, she rolled onto her side to face him, brightening up. "Hey - thanks. When I catch my first prey, I'm gonna bring it straight to you!"
Lightpaw was tired of laying there moping. She hopped to her paws and lashed her tail. "Up up," she meowed, lightness in her voice. "Let's do something other than pout."

"Like what?" Skypaw asked as he rose to his feet. He wasn't too enthusiastic but he figured anything would be better than moping around. "Oh, by the way, when you make your first catch, make sure its a vole," he teased. "I like them the best."
As his eyes scanned the camp he saw the medicine cat heading their way. "Uh oh," he said under his breath. "We better get moving before he asks us to do some unpleasant task." He wasn't in the mood to do anymore work that involved mouse bile.
Lightpaw bumped her shoulder against her friend playfully. "A vole huh? We'll see." She followed Skypaw's gaze as the medicine cat approached and nodded quickly. "Yeah, let's get out of here." With that, the apprentice bounded off to the entrance of the camp.

Without wasting any time, Skypaw was close behind Lightpaw. "Made it!" he exclaimed as he cast a quick glance over his shoulder at Graythorn. The medicine cat was watching the pair with a curious expression in his eyes. What are those two up to? he wondered. Then with a shrug of his shoulders he went over to the fresh kill pile.
"That was close!" he said once they were out of sight from the camp entrance. "Where do you want to go?"
Lightpaw's heart was beating quickly as they squeezed out of camp, but it beat from excitement not from true nerves. "Hmm," she drawled out, stopping after they'd run off a short distance. Then her eyes sparkled. This was her first time out of camp with her new friend, and her mind was racing with possibilities, but the choice was an easy one. "We have to go swimming, of course! Take me to your favorite spot for it." Leafbare had just ended so she knew the water would be colder than preferable, but Lightpaw didn't really mind. The prospect of a fun day out was alluring.

When Lightpaw mentioned swimming, the first thought that had flashed in Skypaw's mind was his disastrous trip to the ocean - the salty water washing over him, hearing Coalkit's cries for help. With what seemed to him a physical effort, he cleared his head from the visions of that awful night. "Uh, the pool at the base of the waterfall is fun," he meowed hoping Lightpaw didn't notice any distress in his voice. He willed his thoughts to be pleasant, happy ones. He was with his new friend after all and this is a time to have fun! "It's really pretty there too. Have you seen it yet?"
Skypaw sounded a little off, but Lightpaw wrote it off as his mood not yet being lightened. She would fix that soon, hopefully. Lightpaw nodded along and meowed, "I'm not sure! I remember my mother taking me to swim when I was younger, but we haven't been in a few moons. I definitely didn't pay attention to the territory as a kit." She looked at the different directions they could go and pointed with her tail, choosing at random. "You'll have to show me where or else we're goin' this way!"

Skypaw smiled. "You won't find it that way but you might find a few nutty squirrels over there," he laughed. "Come on, it's over this way past the training hollow." He bounded off in the opposite direction in which Lightpaw had indicated. "Let's race!" He slowed to wait for his friend to catch up. He didn't want to be accused of getting a head start when he beat her. "First one to the training hollow wins!" He was beginning to feel a little better and he hoped the exertion from the run would help clear his thoughts.
As Skypaw dashed off, Lightpaw was taken by surprise. "Hey!" she exclaimed, lashing her tail before chasing him. He seemed to slow a bit so she pushed on ahead, taking advantage of the kindness. "Oh no you don't!" Lightpaw bounded on ahead, expecting him to overtake her easily as she was still just six moons old. It didn't bother her, and she felt spirited and free. Also, he really needed to be ahead of her just so she didn't end up running the wrong way!

(Sorry I haven't been on lately. We had to put my cat, Rusty, asleep on Friday. I was too sad to do any roleplaying.)
It was long before Skypaw caught up to Lightpaw and he kept pace with her running by her side. A well worn path made by countless ages of SummerClan cats lead from the camp to the training hollow. Soon they came to the place where apprentices trained to be warriors. "There's the training hollow if you haven't been there yet," Skypaw meowed. The path continued past the hollow and he kept following it. "We're about halfway to the falls now."
Lightpaw was glad when the other apprentice was running by her side again. She glanced over at the training hollow before replying, "I haven't been there. Seasparkleflash hasn't taken me to train yet." The she-cat was tiring of running already. She slowed down, hoping Skypaw would take the hint and slow with her instead of leaving her in the dust. "This is really far." _ ooc; hey no worries at all, i'm very sorry to hear about Rusty. I hope you feel better soon <3

Skypaw matched Lightpaw's speed. He had forgotten she wasn't used to long runs yet. "If you think this is far, you'll be surprised to see just how big our territory is," he replied. "The is only a small claw scratch compared to the whole. And it will be even bigger if Ratstar decides to annex on the ocean shore too."
He passed familiar landmarks and soon he heard the falling water in the distance. "Can you hear that?" -- (Thanks ^^)
The she-cat perked her ears. Yes, she could certainly hear something. Lightpaw smirked. "Yeah Skypaw... I hear your loud breathing! We running too fast for you?" The apprentice smiled joyfully although she was panting at this point from exertion. Lightpaw slowed her steps down to a walk because she desperately needed a break. "Here, let's slow down Skypaw. Gotta let you get a breath in huh?"

"Me?!" Skypaw meowed back in a teasing tone. "I thought I was running next to a thirsty badger with all that panting going on!" He slowed his pace to a walk and was actually glad for the break. He didn't realize how hard he was pushing himself and then because of that pushing Lightpaw. "It's good for your lungs to stretch them by running," he meowed, not wanting to admit his oversight. "Might come in handy if you're being chased by a pack of dogs."
