Lightpaw was grateful for her friend's banter. Their friendship was still new but it felt so easy to her, and she quite enjoyed having somebody to spend time with now that she had no family left. "Thanks for the advice," she said honestly, still out of breath. The apprentice heard something nearby and stopped short. "Skypaw!" she hissed through her teeth, trying to be quiet but keep his attention. "I think there's some prey up ahead. Let's try to catch it!"

Skypaw's breathing was now slowing. He looked in the direction Lightpaw was indicating but saw nothing. He too had heard the sound but couldn't tell what it was. Then remembering his lessons, he sniffed the air by drawing it in through his mouth. A jumble of scents filled his senses. "I smell cats of course, birds I think, mice, and maybe a shrew," he whispered. "I wish I was better at this. WHat do you think it is?"
The she-cat shrugged. Her only hunting lesson so far had gone poorly. "I'm not sure," Lightpaw said anyway, trying to copy Skypaw's method. She scented what was around her but only smelled, well, food.

As Skypaw was watching where he thought the smells were coming from, a baby bird staggered out from some tall grass and looked at the two cats. "PEEP! PEEP!" the little bird cried.
"Now that looks like something easy to catch," he meowed to Lightpaw. He was moving slowly closer to the baby bird as he spoke. The bird was hopping about awkwardly and still making it's peeping sounds. "I don't think it knows how to fly yet. See how it's flapping it's wings but isn't going anywhere?"
All of a sudden there was a loud screeching sound and a large blue jay dove straight for Skypaw's head. He flattened himself on the ground as the angry mother bird brushed past his fur. He looked up in time to see the bird start another dive but this time it was aimed for Lightpaw.
"Oh StarClan!" cried Lightpaw as the bird swooped down from nowhere, flying for Skypaw's face. She stumbled backward away from the tom and watched in horror as the blue jay dove again. It was coming toward her and she darted forward, tangling her legs with Skypaw's as she ran into him. The bird missed and circled again for another attempt. "Sorry Skypaw!" She pulled herself away from her friend and looked up at the sky in a panic.

The collision knocked Skypaw to the ground. By the time he looked up again the mother bird was diving again. "OW!" he yowled when he felt a sharp peck of the top of his head. "Let's get outta here! Come on!" He took off running avoiding the baby bird which was squawking horribly. He was glad the mother bird hadn't gotten one of his eyes. He had turned his head barely in time to keep that from happening.
He slowed his running when he realized the bird wasn't chasing them. "Are you alright?" he meowed breathlessly to Lightpaw.
Lightpaw had raced after Skypaw as soon as the tom had taken off. He finally spoke to her, asking if she was okay. "Yes," she replied, heart still racing. "Are you!? It got you right on the head, Skypaw!"

"I know," the tom replied, rubbing a paw on the spot. "I guess I'm okay. It's not bleeding but it sure hurts." He looked back at the bird which was now tending to her chick. "I'm glad no cat saw that. Do you realize what just happened back there? We ran from prey! Some warrior I'd make." His ego felt ten times worse than the pain in his head.
Immediately Lightpaw shot forward and pressed her nose to Skypaw's flank comfortingly. "It has a beak," she said as if it made all the difference. "How about we go back and while she's busy with the baby bird, we kill it!"

"How about we get both of them?" Skypaw meowed brightening a bit. "The baby might not be able to survive on its own so it'll be a shame to leave it to waste." He watched the two birds as he spoke. It looked to him that the mother blue jay was now trying to teach her young one how to fly. The baby would make a few fluttering attempts but would always fall quickly back to the ground. "If we both attack the older one together, we would get the job done for sure."
Lightpaw was pleased that Skypaw's mood was better again. She agreed to his plan and looked over at the birds. "Let me try first Skypaw! When I miss and it comes for me, you can catch it while it's distracted."

Being a little reluctant at first for fear of her safety, Skypaw agreed to Lightpaw's plan. "Be careful of that beak," he cautioned. "Guard your eyes. The peck I took on the top of my head was strong enough to take out an eye." He felt the spot on his head again and noticed that a lump was now forming.
"Gotcha," said Lightpaw, mind already gone and thinking about getting the bird. She waited for it to look especially distracted before taking off at full speed, yowling and making as much noise as she could on her way over there. "Come and get me!" she cried loudly, watching as the bird aggressively rose up into the air again.

Why did I agree to this? Skypaw asked himself as he watched Lightpaw racing toward danger. With the lump on his head pulsing, he ran behind her a little distance away just to be available in case he was needed.
The baby bird squawked and trotted off as it caught sight of the returning cats. It's wings flapped in an attempt to fly but the baby failed miserably. Meanwhile the mother bird let out a warning cry before starting her dive at Lightpaw.
Lightpaw shrank back as the bird dove toward her. She didn't take her eyes from it, waiting until the last moment to suddenly run to the side to draw it away from the baby. "Go get it!" she cried toward Skypaw.

Skypaw hesitated for a brief second before chasing after the baby. He was torn between helping Lightpaw and going after the baby. Quickly he decided he could help out after he caught the young one. So with a burst of speed, he charge the little blue jay and killed it.
Immediately there was a loud cry in the air from the mother bird.
Lightpaw dodged the bird's swoops, looking over at Skypaw to see if he'd gotten the baby. He had! She was about to open her mouth to congratulate him when the bird in the air made a loud scream, changing direction and heading again for Skypaw. "Watch out!" she cried, racing after the bird and trying to jump into the air to swipe at it. She missed and it flew closer to her friend.

The mother blue jay screeched out her anger as she dove for Skypaw. More by accident than by design, he reared up with his eyes closed and swatted wildly in the air. He was surprised when he felt a flailing paw make connection with a feathered body. He had fully expected to miss and get another peck on his head. When he opened his eyes, he was surprised again when he saw the bird on the ground. It was running away from him squawking and flapping it's wings. One wing was obviously injured as it flopped around uselessly.
"Hurry!" he called to Lightpaw. "Get it before it gets away!"
She winced at the injured bird on the ground. Suddenly she wasn't so sure about this. It didn't feel wrong to kill the bird, especially now that it couldn't fly anymore and would die anyway ... but it did feel wrong that she hadn't been the one to do all the work herself. For that reason, Lightpaw shocked herself and refused. "No Skypaw, you get it. I don't want my first kill to be like this."

Not seeing anything wrong with the hunt, Skypaw leaped forward and finished the blue jay off. "What's wrong?" he asked as he turned to face his clanmate. There was genuine concern in his voice. "We did the hunt together. It was your right to make the kill." He knew that hunting as a team was common among warriors and was even taught to apprentices. It was just last week he learned how to work as a team to catch rabbits.
