His heart lurched at the look in her eyes. What could have upset her so much? Had he done something? He'd barely been in camp today, what could he have done? Sootstep hesitated, then settled down beside her, their fur brushing slightly. "You aren't fine," he murmured, reaching for her with a paw, then changing his mind and glancing away. She hadn't wanted to talk to him the day he'd gotten out of the medicine cat's den, so why would she now? "You don't have to tell me. But tell someone. I don't want to see you unhappy."
He bit his lip and sneaked a sideways glance. "Is it something I did?"

Dawnmemories went still and stared at him intently for several heartbeat before hopelessly burying her face again, "yes, you did something," she meowed, the sound muffed slightly. Her voice lacked any real emotion, except a tinge of bitterness. Because she knew he'd take her words the wrong way, she plowed on, "Sunfrog was flirting with you, you know?"
In her stupidly over-emotional brain she saw Sunfrog's and Sootstep's life as mates. Having kits, laughing together, growing old together. And it scared her. Of course, these two cats were only having a normal conversation and she had no right to feel jealous or even a single reason to be, but she couldn't seem to help it.
Trying hard to convey a thousand emotions in a single gesture she shuffled very deliberately over to Sootstep, pressing herself against him lightly. It was cuddling or anything, but she hoped he got the point.
His heart did a childish flip flop of disappointment that he really was the problem, and his ears lowered. But how was Sunfrog flirting with him his fault? He hasn’t really done anything, had he? He felt a flare of annoyance. He’d barely been there a few minutes before she’d run off!
“We were just talking, Dawnmemories. And how was I supposed to know it would upset you? I didn’t even know you two were friends! Maybe you should tell your friends not to flirt if you don’t want me involved with them.” Sootstep clenched his jaw as he glared away, irrationally angry at her again. “Am I that bad I can’t even talk to cats you know? You think— what, that I’ll hurt them? Is there something so wrong with me you don’t trust me around them?”

"What are you talking about?" Dawnmemories asked, genuinely shocked by his words."Sootstep, you would never hurt a clanmates, I know that. You aren't evil." Why had he said that? Did he think she saw him as a villian? "Of course I trust you around other cats. It's just that... Sunfrog is very pretty." This was uncomfortable for her, and now she felt horrible for making Sootstep upset. They always seemed to misunderstand each other and Dawnmemories had no idea how to communicate with him about her feelings because she wasn't even sure how she was feeling.
"So what? She's too good for me? If she wants to settle for flirting with someone beneath her that's her initiate, it has nothing to do with you," he snapped back. He had no interest in Sunfrog as a potential mate, he didn't really see anyone that way, he was too busy trying to be a good warrior and wasting all his energy fighting with Dawnmemories all the time. He thought they were past this, but now he was starting to wonder if they ever would be. She couldn't let him do anything without criticizing it, could she?
Sootstep pulled away from her and pushed himself up into a sitting position, his tail tip twitching with rage that he was going to have to walk away from his own nest because she was still in it. Who insulted a cat while sleeping in their nest?!

im going to punch them both lol
"Sootstep!" Dawnmemories snapped, "she's not too good for you, okay? You're..." she sat up too, looking away from him and trying very hard to contain herself, "I don't want to see you with anyone, okay?" Fur ruffled, she added, "and not because of anything you did. It's not about you, okay? It's about me and my... confusion. I don't know how to explain it, and I don't even know that I could. But, it's not you. You've done nothing wrong, I'm just... I'm just overly emotional since the fight." That last part was a lie, but her confusion was real. She honestly didn't understand her feelings towards Sootstep. She didn't know why she'd ended up in his nest or upset by Sunfrog's flirting.
He stared at her hard, growing frustrated. What did that mean? She was making less and less sense with every word and it was making his head spin. He couldn't even be relieved that it wasn't his fault because he didn't understand why she had suddenly changed her mind. Sootstep glared at the edge of the den, clenching his jaw. This wasn't fair. She had no right to stop him from seeing other cats, especially if it wasn't even because of him, it was because she could't figure out her own feelings. That wasn't something he could influence. Was he supposed to give everything up just to keep her happy?
He hated how tempted he was.
"That's your problem," he dragged out, flashing her a cold look. "We're not together. You can't stop me from spending time with whoever I want. We were cuddling because it was cold and I was dying, that's all, so get your head on straight."

"Oh," she looked instantly deflated. Not angry, not insulted or offended, just... shut off. Her face seemed to freeze and when she forced her eyes back to Sootstep they held a careful emptiness. "Right. of course. What was I thinking?" This was pretty much her way of protecting herself, act cool and unbothered, then get the heck away from the situation.
Really, she was just draining away. Dawnmemories was hurt and it felt fatal. Her heart ached and her eyes betrayed her and filled with tears. "I'm sorry to have behaved so foolishly. Perhaps you and Sunfrog and me and Earthcascade could all find happiness with each other." There was nothing between her and Earthcascade, but the lie felt good. She stood and stepped out of his nest, head high and tears still stubbornly in her eyes.
Sootstep was bristling. He knew he hurt her and he hated it, but he was too angry to care. The peace between them had been broken and he didn’t see that changing anytime soon. Maybe they just weren’t meant to get along.
“Great. I wish you a happy life,” he hissed, torn between bitterness and jealousy. He spun around and stumped out of the den.

They were in the same clan! They'd see each other all the time, they couldn't be like this! But Dawnmemories was not about to run after him. He'd made his position on them clear and that was all she needed to know. With a sudden burst of anger she turned and lashed out at her nest, spraying her moss as she did so. This had been stupid, she was a fool. With a choked sob she walked away from her nest, leaving it in pieces, some in Sootstep's nest. Dejected, she went to the back of the den and laid down on the bare earth, paws under her chin.
Sootstep returned late that night to his nest and said nothing as he settled into it. He was careful to keep his distance from her nest, and there was no way he going to admit his nest had a nice smell to it after she'd laid there. Actually, he'd been careful not to say a word to her when he came in, or for the few days after. The dark gray tom kept to himself and kept an eye on her, especially who she was keeping company with.
But. The inevitable.
After a heated argument with the leader and deputy about changing patrols, he finally admitted defeat and sulked back to stand outside the camp. He was late for the patrol but who cared at this point?

Dawnmemories was miserable. She had done nothing more than what was required of her over the past few days. She spoke to no one and had hardly eaten. Her fur was a mess and she was often spotted sleeping outside the warriors den at night. The usually social and kind she-cat was now defeated and quick to snap when pressed to speak. Today was no different as she padded into camp from her first patrol of the day, spitting a bird out onto the fresh-kill pile without taking anything for herself. Because what was the point?
She passed right by Sootstep without even really seeing him before heading back outside camp to wait for her next patrol. Her eyes stayed trained to the ground.
The dark gray tom stiffened when he saw her drawing near, preparing himself with a sharp intake of breath, but she walked right past him. He frowned slightly, brow drawing together as he watched her head to the kill pile and then back out of the camp. Didn’t she know he was on her next patrol? Or was she just avoiding him?
She had been different lately. He had noticed that even as he tried to ignore her. He had missed much of her withdrawl, but he’d seen some of it, just enough to concern him. Not that he had any right to be concerned, he reminded himself sternly. He bit his lip, then reluctantly trailed over to give her a stiff nod.

No. "Yes," she responded, sounding completely neutral. She'd expected this. Anything patrol with him. But she wasn't going to get emotional about it. She couldn't. Dawnmemories was a warrior and she wasn't going to dodge her patrols because Sootstep was here. After all, the tom had made it clear he was not interested in knowimg Dawnmemories in any capacity. So why bother?
That thought comforted Dawnmemories enough to drive her to take the lead. She wasn't even sure if their goal, she simply marched off.
He followed after her quietly, but they had only gone a few steps before they were joined by a sleek bronze tom. “If I didn’t know any better I’d think you two wanted some time alone,” Ragingspire quipped as he settled into between them. “Unfortunately for you, I’m on this patrol as well.”
Normally Sootstep would have been relieved to see the friendly face, but he wasn’t sure how to feel now. He didn’t know what to say. It was like the last few moons were erased /again/.
“Great,” he muttered, “I’m thrilled you’re here.”
The older warrior pouted. “That’s it? What am I, dead fish?”

Dawnmemories could not possibly have been less interested in the presence of Ragingspire, but she didn't want to seem rude. So, she politely dipped her head, "we are genuinely," she flashed a small glare at Sootstep, "happy to have you along with us." She hadn't really been looking forward to spending time alone with Sootstep, so why did she feel so strangely disappointed now?
As the three walked further from camp she saw Sunfrog padding off, tail high. A small twinge of jealously went through her and she glanced reflexively at Sootstep to see if he'd noticed her pretty friend flouncing away.
"I appreciate that. You're a very kind cat, Dawnmemories, unlike this oaf," he remarked with a smug grin. He spotted the she-cat in the distance."Sunfrog, good hunting?" Ragingspire called over to her, not seeming to care if he was disturbing prey - or maybe trying to flush it out for her, if they were extraordinarily lucky.
Sootstep caught her glare and rolled his eyes as he looked off. Trust Dawnmemories to insult his manners. He knew she didn't mean it that way and it wouldn't normally have bothered him, but with her being so strange lately, it ruffled his fur. He was still glaring moodily into the trees when Sunfrog appeared, and would've missed her completely if Ragingspire didn't call out a greeting. Ears pricked, his head snapped up, and he gave her a quick nod.

Sunfrog paused and looked over her shoulder, turning to pad back to the group with a friendly wave of her tail, "it was good hunting this morning, but your shouting probably scared it all to WinterClan," her voice was friendly and she bumped Ragingspire's shoulder in a friendly gesture. She gave a Sootstep a coy look and greeted Dawnmemories politely.
Dawnmemories wanted very badly to snap at them all, though she wasn't sure where the sudden anger came from. "We've got a patrol, goodbye, Sunfrog." She bounded forward, tail flagged and twitching with irritation. Sunfrog looked surprised by her friend's behavior and looked at Ragingspire and Sootstep with confusion, "okay, bye guys. I'll catch you later." The small ginger cat raced off towards the FallClan border, the opposite direction Dawnmemories had went off in.
Ragingspire laughed, none too concerned that she was likely right, and ignored Dawnmemories as she passed on as well, rolling his eyes. "Someone must've spit in her nest this morning." Still, as the she-cat fled the bronze tom trotted after his patrol, swishing his tail.
Sootstep's smile was friendly enough, but it quickly faded as he looked after his friend, and his brow creased as his mouth fell into a frown. What was up with her today? She wasn't still upset with Sunfrog for the other day, was she? He thought he'd made it clear he could talk to whoever he wanted and it was none of her business. Thoroughly rankled now, he stalked after her with his tail swishing low between his heels. "What is wrong with her?" he muttered out of the corner of his mouth. The other tom glanced at him but didn't reply, just smiled knowingly as he led them to rejoin Dawnmemories.
"You know this is a group patrol. I'd rather not sprint all the way to the border, I was up late last night," Ragingspire told her as they drew near. "You really are eager to be done with us, huh?"

Dawnmemories shot Ragingspire a glance, tail flicking and forced herself to slow down. "It's not you," she admitted softly with a sigh. "You're a great cat, Ragingspire. I'm simply tired of Sootstep trying to run all our patrols, and we're always on patrol together." That was half a lie, but it sounded mostly convincing to her.
"And," she mumbled, leaning into whisper into Ragingspire's ear, "Sunfrog would have kept up there all day while she flirted with him." And she didn't want to see that. Or see him flirt back. She had heard Sootstep's words the other day and definitely had come to the conclusion that he was right, she'd overstepped the boundary by moving her nest and then laying in his. Dawnmemories wanted to respect that, but she also didn't want to see the relationship blossom between Sunfrog and Sootstep.
