Sootstep leaned against the camp wall near the exit, watching the camp go about their business as he suppressed a yawn. It was a late afternoon on a muggy hot fall day, and while clouds were finally moving in to block out the sun and offer some relief, he couldn't help but be wistful. Quite a few cats had returning from their hunting and were lounging about the camp chatting and spending time with their friends and families, and he wanted to join them. Instead, he was stuck on another patrol— probably revenge for missing out on the assignments this morning. Sootstep hadn't attended the patrol meeting, so one of the other warriors had to find him and tell him he'd been assigned here. At least they could get it over with quickly and come back by evening when it was a shade cooler.
He'd taken the time to straighten himself up anyway, tidied his dark blue gray fur into place so he was at least remotely presentable, just in case he had a she-cat on this patrol. Sootstep wasn't really interested in romance, but he never minded a pretty smiling face, he enjoyed a little light flirting here and there even if it was all in jest. He wasn't very good at it, but he didn't mean anything, so it didn't matter. His blue gaze lazily lifted to check for his companion, and as soon as he saw her walking toward him, he realized his efforts had been wasted. He might as well have gotten dressed up for the mice because they'd probably appreciate it a lot more than she would.
"Great," the warrior sighed, "just when I thought I'd get some peace and quiet."

[{"He might as well have gotten dressed up for the mice because they'd probably appreciate it a lot more than she would." I will never forget that quote. }]
The late afternoon sun was only slightly too hot for her now as she sat just outside camp and groomed her long fur, half-listening to the noise in camp. Dawnmemories was assigned to this afternoon's patrol and was trying very hard to stay hidden until she absolutely had to leave with them because she had a sneaking suspicions that the fuzzball was going to be with her on this patrol too. Sootstep. Even his name made her fur fluff up indignantly. The two cats were close in age and had been forced together all their life but they seemed to despise each other. At one point Dawnmemories had thought she had a crush on the tom, but thank StarClan that was short lived. Now they were repeatedly put on the same patrols and assignments.
Today proved to be no different as Dawnmemories stopped meticulously licking her fur and slipped back into camp, sighing dramatically when her eyes found Sootstep. What a pretentious crow, his neatly groomed fur was annoyingly sleek and she very badly wanted to throw a pawful of sand at him. Her long fur looked slightly fluffed up in annoyance as she approached the tom, "Sootstep," her voice help all the warmth of WinterClan in the dead of leaf bare. "You're on this afternoon's patrol too?"
"Looks like it. Is that a problem, dear?" His deadpan was matched by the slight tilt of his head, a silent challenge, daring her to argue with him. He was always taunting, egging her on, a hint of superiority in the lift of his chin— he knew he could get a rise out of her, if he hit the right buttons. It wasn't difficult for her to get under his skin either, he certainly had a problem with her coming on this patrol, even if they both knew there was no getting out of it. He had tried more than once to duck patrols with her and he never got away with it, and he was starting to give up trying. It was easier to just deal with it, even if she was the most annoying cat to ever walk out of the nursery. She didn't look like she'd be in a better mood than usual today, but she had recently groomed her fur— maybe she had been expecting a better partner than him. Well, that made two of them.
"Who else is coming?" He looked away finally, back over the rest of the camp. He hadn't realized he had been staring, but he had a feeling she knew. Great.

"Oh no, honey," Dawnmemories bit out, hoping StarClan was carefully noting her restraint. She most definitely deserved a special mention for this. "I just love spending literally all day everyday with you." She sat across from him, stubbornly totally not letting him get to her. Why was he even like this? Since he was born he'd had all the manners and friendliness of a particularly foul badger, and yet she felt oddly drawn to him. Of course, she despised patrols with him, but she also almost seemed to look forward to their squabbling. Perhaps she liked to feel like clawing her own fur out. And he didn't actually look like a crow.
"I don't know, I don't see anyone and we should have all gathered by now," Dawnmemories responded, without much venom in her voice this time. "Do you think it's just us?" Surely not. Please no.
Sootstep had no desire to go out with her alone. It wouldn't be the first time, but it hadn't happened often, and he didn't expect it would go well. At best they'd finish in a stony silence and ignore each other the entire time, but when did that ever happen? It was like she couldn't help trying to rile him up all the time, she had something specially against him ever since they were kits. He continued to look out over the camp, compensating for staring by refusing to look at her now, but it was quickly becoming apparent it was a lost caught. No cat was coming to their rescue— lucky for them, they wouldn't have to be in the middle of this.
"Let's get this over with. The sooner we start the sooner we can be done with this," he huffed finally, looked at her hard in case she wanted to protest as he pushed off the wall to head for the camp exit.

With a terribly depressed sigh, Dawnmemories followed Sootstep. This kept happening, they were just thrown together over and over. Was it because their rift was so obvious? It couldn't be, the two cats disliked each other but were fairly civil among others, she'd even say they acted like proper clanmates. So why this punishment? She watched him as they left camp, trying to read something in him that she didn't even realize she was looking for. Something friendly, perhaps? Dawnmemories didn't want this dynamic between them, but despite her many self-inflicted lectures, the end was always the same. No doubt tonight would end with harshly flung words and fluffed up fur.
Sootstep assumed the lead and led them at a medium-paced march out of camp and toward the far corner of the territory, leaving little room for conversation; she'd have to catch up to him if she wanted to talk and he doubted she had any desire to do that. Silence was the best option as soon as they didn't have to keep up the appearance of enjoying each other's company, not that they did a good job of that to begin with. It nagged at him to keep quiet, though; not because he was a particularly talkative cat, but because he hated the awkward stiffness that was always between them. They didn't need to be the best of friends, but he wished she could tolerate him and not criticize his every move. She probably felt the same.
Reluctantly, feeling obligated, he dropped his pace enough to close the distance between them. "At least it's finally cooling off," he said gruffly. The clouds he'd seen moving in had come much closer and blocked part of the sun.

Dawnmemories followed in almost suspicious obedience but, truthfully, she had to much on her mind to be a lead. Instead she just thought. Not about anything solid, mostly just about her confusion regarding Sootstep. Why were they even like this? All this time, since kithood, they had thrown insults and bickered. But why? Dawnmemories eyes grew troubled as she watched the tom in front of her and her head and heart felt heavy.
When he closed the distance she looked at him with surprise, cocking her head to the side a little as he spoke. What was this? Uncertainly, as though worried about an ambush, she responded, "um, yeah. I think we are in for some much better weather." Her long fur would maybe stop feeling so hot and uncomfortable. ... Now what did she say? Or do? She only knew their arguing. The civility Sootstep had just conjured between them felt delicate. And wrong, but only in a way that meant it was simply unfamiliar.
Sootstep nodded, feeling uncomfortable already. He just wanted to make conversation, anything other than another fight, but he was quickly realizing he had already run out of ideas. He has no idea what to talk to Dawnmemories about. Maybe there was a reason they hadn’t done this before.
“... Well, once we get there, it should be quick. Just check the border and head back.”

Dawnmemories sighed, feeling uneasy and distrusting. Sootstep was a great warrior, not that she would ever tell him that, and had always deserved her respect. But still they had never managed to get along. Hopefully Dawnmemories was a good warrior in her own right, so why were they not on the same level? Why did he always treat her so poorly? And why was he being nice now?
Her tail flicked with growing suspicion and annoyance, her pale green eyes narrowed, and her neck fur fluffed a bit. "That's how every patrol goes," she replied with an eye roll. The moment was gone. She'd risen her defenses again and was ready to get on with the way they really were. She wouldn't waste her time on Sootstep.
He stiffened. He tried to be nice once and this was how he was treated? She couldn't let him say a single thing without being stubborn and sarcastic— why'd he even try? Once again he was reminded it was a wasted effort to try and mend bridges with her. If she was never going to see eye to eye with him he shouldn't even try. This had been a stupid plan.
"You know what? Forget it," he replied tensely, brushing past her and marching ahead. He forged ahead through the brush, clenching his jaw as he bit back an angry response, but finally his self-control slipped. Sootstep was not a very patient cat— sometimes he felt he should be, a ghost of a memory reminding him, but he wasn't. He'd had those feelings before when he was a kit, when he felt he knew how to hunt and fight and his young body simply couldn't move and keep up as it should, and the frustration of being inept had only made him more impatient.
He turned on her with his ears back, hostility glittering in his hurt blue eyes. "What is wrong with you, anyway?" he snapped. "Is it so hard just to talk to me like you're a normal cat?"

"You are my problem," she hissed back, green eyes lit with deep disappointment and anger. "Ever since we were kits. I wanted to be your friend! And you were always this impatient, rude, burr in my pelt." There was something else there too, a longing she didn't understand. "And I can't get away from you! You're so... I don't even know what to say, Sootstep. How am I supposed to trust these niceties now?" Her voice rose as she spoke but it seemed cracked with emotion other than anger. A powerful loneliness pulsed from her as she went on, "I don't know why I'm even here anymore." The dark red cat turned away, intending to go where ever this tom wasn't.
so wanna bring in a fox so they have to save each other's life c;
i was just thinking their yelling could bring in some predators to run from cx
"I was a kit, Dawnmemories! I was just trying to have fun, not upset anybody, and everyone else has let it go, why won't how? How am I supposed to change your mind if you won't let go of the past? It's not like I want to spend time with you either," he scoffed, "I was just trying to be nice so maybe this patrol wouldn't be so insufferable." His tail lashed as anger gathered hotly inside of him. This was all so unfair— like always. Her last confession threw him for a loop, he hadn't expected something so vulnerable, and it took the edge off his anger. For a moment he felt a strange urge to apologize and ask for forgiveness— but that was ridiculous; he hadn't done anything wrong. He bit his lip and turned away as well. "That isn't my problem."

Dawnmemories paused, one paw raised in the air to take her next step as he spoke. "I don't know," she said finally, stubbornly not looking back at the tom, "I don't know why I can let it go. I just... can't." Shutting off the torrent of emotions she was feeling, Dawnmemories took her next step. Only for a harsh growl to make her spin around. Slicking out of the brush between the two cats was a fox, large and mean and riddled with scars. Her fur stood on end and she looked over to her clanmate, cut off from her by the fox. Anger bubbled in her, anger at him and at herself. Their arguing had left them open to attack, they'd practically been begging for an attack.
He rolled his eyes. Maybe he had been an annoying kitten but that was no excuse to hate him now. He shook his head and prepared to plunge back into the brush when he heard a growl. Sootstep froze, turning slowly to look at the predator and swore under his breath. He should have been more alert, should have seen it coming long before now, but he'd been distracted; and now they were stuck with a fight on their paws. He puffed up his dense dark coat and pulled back his lips, stiffly facing the fox down as he tried to catch Dawnmemories eye. This was her fault as much as his for being too loud, but there was no time to continue arguing now; they needed to get out of this.
He tiled his head slightly, nodding off to her left. Leave, circle around, he mouthed at her— doubting she understood exactly what she said, but thinking his message might be clear enough she could guess what he wanted. He shifted a few steps closer to the fox and let loose a fierce rumbling growl from deep in his chest as he unsheathed his claws, daring the beast to come at him.

this is all i can think about omg
All thoughts of their rivalry gone, Dawnmemories locked eyes with Sootstep. There was a reason they were sent out on patrols and assignments together, one of her clanmates said her and Sootstep seemed to read each others minds. Dawnmemories could see what they meant. There was connection between them which probably caused problems as often as it solved them. However, looking at this large fox as it glared between her and Sootstep, she was grateful to have him here of all the cats.
She flicked her tail to signal she understood. As soon as the fox focused on Sootstep she turned and circled to her left, as told to do. She tried to be fast but was very careful about her pawsteps in case it alerted the fox. As is advanced on Sootstep she took up a place in a small bush just to the side of him. Waving her tail to get him to glance her way she mouthed I'm with you, we can surprise it.
He was relieved to see her head out and start to pass by it. As reluctant as he was to admit it, they made a good team, and working together was the only way they were getting out of this. He growled louder and cringed away from the fox to hold its attention away from his companion, skittering back a few steps to draw it in after him. The fox knew as well as he did that one on one he didn't stand a chance, so he should be running scared— until he saw the signal. Sootstep nodded and paused in his careful retreat, taking in a breath.
Now or never.
With a hard lash of his tail he let out an ear-splitting screech and sprinted toward the fox, ducking away from its snapping jaws and lunging for the throat, relying on her distraction to keep those sharp fangs from touching either of them.

Dawnmemories echoed his screech and exploded from the leaves she was hiding behind with claws unsheathed and fur on end. She went for it's face, slashing at it's muzzle when it started to turn it's head towards Sootstep's attack. The fox roared and tried to shake off Sootstep's assault. Dawnmemories hissed and clawed at it's eyes, it's blood speckled her fur as they warriors attacked it. The fox seemed to have no intention to lose the fight and instead now seemed intent on Sootstep, thrashing to try and grab him.
"Watch out," she warned, though she saw the creature weakening from Sootstep's attack.
Skin split under his claws but there was no time to revel in the victory as he narrowly avoided snapping jaws. He was lucky Dawnmemories was so quick to pull its attention away, and with the two of them they were a formidable opponent. He snapped up at its neck, sinking his claws into the soft flesh to haul him up high enough to bite, but as it bucked and fought he snarled and felt his grip loosening. Sootstep was shaken free and tumbled to the ground, hitting with a hard huff. It wasn't enough to wind him completely and he rolled back to his paws, grunting at the effort, and lifted his gaze quickly to find his companion, worried the fox was about to bear down on him or catch her...
... only to yelp in surprise as a strong force carried him off his side and snapping fangs tore at his side. Sootstep's head lolled back as he hit the ground again and his eyes widened to see a smaller second fox had joined the fight. Through the flurry of motion in the clearing he spotted a curious third pair of eyes as another fox loped toward them, this one a slender young vixen. Pups, born a little late this year, just reaching the age they'd be leaving their den and setting out on their own... and they'd stumbled right into their travelling path.
"Dawnmemories! We need to go!" Sootstep yowled as he rolled free of the fox's grip and stumbled to his paws.

"No!" Dawnmemories yowled, seeing the second fox grab Sootstep. If she had seen any clanmate in such a situation she would have helped, but with Sootstep she felt a fire light in her. Instead of the rush of battle and the appreciation of a clanmate beside her, she felt something else. A fierce protectiveness and a devotion to Sootstep so strong it would have frozen her in any other moment. But right now, she had to get that fox away from him.
With a furious scream she flew at the second fox, the first fox snapped at her and she felt it rip some fur from her tail. Dawnmemories ignored the pain of her fur being torn out and instead launched herself right at the second fox's face, "drop him, mange pelt." It took half a heartbeat for her to spot the third fox, just as Sootstep rolled free. In that moment the second fox took it's chance and tried to bite her, managing to grab and rip her left ear. With a yelp of pain she tore free from the fox and backed up, coming up next to Sootstep. Blood was rolling down her face now, her ears must be completely shredded.
"Where do we go? We can't lead them to camp and you're hurt," she replied, their fur brushing as she back up to stand beside him. All hint of their argument was gone, now she only felt grateful for his presence. The three foxes lined up and advanced, eyes glittering with hatred. She felt only slightly satisfied to see the scratches on the two foxes they'd attacked. "We need to lead them out of SummerClan's territory," Dawnmemories went on in a rush, shaking her head and splattering blood droplets everywhere.
