His ear twitched as a pebble shot ahead of them and the she-cat hissed. She must've tripped over it. Sootstep sighed, biting his lip indecisively. She was being as stubborn as usual and he wasn't really in the mood for another fight, but she was hurt. He quickened his step to carry him into normal conversation range, regretting his decision to help already.
"Sit down. I'll bring Graythorn back to look at you. You're in no shape to keep going." He didn't look at her as he spoke, keeping his gaze trained ahead, tensely awaiting her answer. It would be better for them both if they were separated now, and she could have a break to recover for a while. Sootstep hurt, but he didn't need a break. He just wanted to get back to the camp already.

"No," she responded stubbornly, "I'm fine." Dawnmemories wasn't going to sit her like a invalid while Sootstep was able to strut into camp like a hero. "Besides, I'm not getting stuck out here with three foxes, thank you very much." Forget Sootstep. Forget their moment. Forget trying. Her frustration grew into a petty type of anger and she didn't trust herself to say anything more, for risk of sounding like a petulant apprentice.
Dawnmemories shook herself and plodded on, though it felt as though she were leaving something important behind her. And, to top everything off, he hadn't even thanked her for her help. She hadn't thanked him either, but that was less important. The scents of her clanmates grew stronger but she already knew they were close to camp, relieved when no stench of fox burned her nose.
Sootstep snorted. "Suit yourself. I was just trying to help," he told her with an angry edge to his voice. That's what he got for looking out for her? All that fox fighting, and for what? They hadn't even managed to scare off the foxes. He dropped behind her again, scowling at the ground. For a moment there, they'd worked so well together, he thought they had hope of getting on in the future, but she just had to go and ruin it. It was hard to feel grateful for her help when she was being such a pain.
"Finally," he muttered when he glanced up to see the camp drawing into view. He marched in after her and headed straight for the warrior's den. He could go see Graythorn after she was done.

i misread a line and i was shook for a second
"Sootstep," she meowed, "you need a medicine cat." This time her voice held no anger, just a careful neutrality and a hint of concern. Clanmates were beginning to stop and stare at them with obvious concern, a few were padding towards them and Dawnmemories did not feel like explaining the day alone. She could still feel the fear for herself and Sootstep too sharply. "Sootstep," she called again, voice pleading, "please come with me to see Graythorn."

Sootstep grit his teeth. It would be easier for them both to just start pretending this had never happened, like she wanted. But... well, maybe his head was still messed up from earlier, because her pleading call tugged at his heartstrings. He stooped, took a deep, shaky breath, and turned back. "Fine," he muttered, "fine." The dark gray tom gazed over their waiting clanmates and felt a new wave of exhaustion hit him. He didn't want to tell their story so many times for them all to listen, but it wasn't fair to leave Dawnmemories to deal with them either. If she's so determined to be bitter, let her have something to be bitter about, he thought, but instead he faced down his clan and shook his head.
"Foxes. Now if you'll let us be, we need to speak to the medicine cat," he told the closest warrior pointedly.

"getting on in the future" i read it too fast o.o
Dawnmemories was grateful for Sootstep's support, even if she had had to beg for it. Still, she slunk to his side as he addressed their clanmates and followed him to the medicine cat den gratefully. Their clanmates watched them go with anxious whispers and Dawnmemories knew it wouldn't be long until they had to tell their story to Gardeniastar and Graythorn. She was tired to the born, upset, and just wanted to be away from camp all over again.
And Sootstep's presence was not helping. Did she want him around? Did she not? Why couldn't she just send the furball packing and get on with her own treatment? Instead, Dawnmemories made sure he went with her to medicine cat den, anxiously looking at his wounds as she did so. Surely she'd earned the right to be a little anxious about him? After all, they'd been through a lot today. And she could always plead exhaustion later if any cat noticed her fussing.
A quarter-moon passed. Sootstep was stuck in Graythorn's den still, curled up in a nest in the back corner; his hasty escape and refusal to let Dawnmemories look over it had backfired when the dust and dirt that had accumulated in the wound left him with a bad infection. After several feverish days where he was barely coherent and mostly just slept, Sootstep was finally on the road to recovery again. He sat quietly in his nest as he waited for the medicine cat to give him the all clear to leave again. He was growing bored of staying in the den all day, it made his claws itch with impatience not to be out hunting... and it left him alone with his thoughts.

Dawnmemories' cobwebs had saved her from any serious infection. She's lost a lot of fur on her tail, her flank had gotten a minor infection but was now healing, her ear remained wrapped in poultices, and her paw pads and claws were shredded but healing fast. Despite the injuries, she was now allowed to leave camp again. But she chose not to most of the time. Instead she'd taken to keeping the elders and queens company, and helping Graythorn as much as possible.
Most cats thought that it was a fear of the foxes, which hadn't been tracked down as of yet, but for Dawnmemories it was really a compulsive need to hover close to Sootstep. The two cats had resumed their frosty relationship and hadn't spoken, but every day she quizzed Graythorn on his condition and brought freshkill for both cats. Dawnmemories wasn't even sure Sootstep knew she'd been around so much - not that she cared of course. She was just obligated to make sure the cat hadn't put himself in StarClan by refusing to let her help him.
When he was finally given the all clear for a test day outside of the den he rose and stretched. It felt good to get his legs moving again, and though his side still protested dully, it was healed enough it wouldn’t open the wound again. He carefully picked his way out of the den and into the open camp. He wasn’t hungry— someone had brought him prey while he was asleep, maybe whoever had been doing it every other day— so he passed by the fresh-kill and set off for the exit.

Dawnmemories sat beside the freshkill pile beside the entrance, dozing in the sun. Lately she hadn't been able to sleep at night and instead had begun to nap throughout the day, usually after taking freshkill to the medicine cat den. There was no way she was going out of camp today after the nightmares of last night. Her clanmates seemed to understand and gave her some space, at least for now. But even in sleep she knew she needed to get over it and move on. Sootstep was alive, she was alive, so she should be out there hunting and patrolling for her clan.
Sootstep barely glanced her way when he passed by. She didn’t want to talk to him and he wasn’t in the mood to restart their old arguing. For the last day or two as his fever broke he’d obsessively gone over the patrol in his head, trying to see what he had to do differently so they would walk away on good terms. Everything had gone well until they left the monster. Was she upset he made her wait so long to get treatment? Was he too heavy laying on her? Was she uncomfortable being so close to him under the monster?
He sighed, annoyed he cared so much. It didn’t matter, they were back to their old selves. Except... well, he wasn’t used to seeing her sleep during the day. It threw him off. Did she usually nap and he missed it? He doubted it, and it worried him to see her here. Sootstep hesitated, then shook his head regretfully, padded over and nudged her with a paw.
“Get up. We’re on patrol together again,” he lied with a bitter twisted smile. How had he gone from avoiding patrols with her to fabricating one? “Hunting. Said to stay close to camp in case my wound opens.”

Almost immediately she was jolted from her sleep, staring up into the begrudging face of Sootstep. Something suspiciously close to joy bubbled up in her when she saw him standing there, very much outside of the medicine den. Without thinking she happily said, "you're finally allowed out!"
But then his words sunk in and she sat up, stretched, and stood facing him uncertainly. "A patrol? So soon after the foxes..." she trailed off, Dawnmemories was a brave cat albeit a slightly bossy one, but nothing in her voice sounded brave now. But she had to a get a grip, and she knew that. Dawnmemories had been in tough situations before, she'd even fought foxes before, but something about the other day had scared her enough to keep her in camp even after she'd been cleared to do patrols. But how could she say no if they'd been assigned one? With a worrisome flick of her tail and nodded, "I'll let you lead then." There was no fire in her voice, no snark or sarcasm. And now that she'd woken up fully, Dawnmemories wasn't sure how to act towards this cat.
He swallowed hard— he didn't think it was going to be like this. Suddenly he felt bad for making up this patrol. He just wanted... well, he wasn't sure what he wanted; he just thought maybe things had changed and they could get along now, even though they didn't after that night. But it felt so wrong to see her scared of going out with him again, she couldn't even argue with him, and it hurt. His head dropped and Sootstep shook his head, stepping away.
"No— you're right. I'll go alone, it's just hunting, I'll be fine. You stay here," he offered lamely. He wasn't sure how to get out of this without admitting the truth. The dark gray tom backed up and quickly turned away.

"No," she said instantly. There was no way she was leaving him out there alone, StarClan themselves couldn't stop her from going with him. Dawnmemories gave herself a shake and looked at him again, trying to act like herself, "I'm definitely going. I was just asleep is all. I was surprised." Because she was afraid of giving herself away she walked briskly out of camp, the gentle breeze and sunshine something dangerous to her now, "where to?" Dawnmemories couldn't make herself look at him again, instead she kept her ears alert and her claws were already unsheathed.
Sootstep opened his mouth to argue again, but what could he say? He followed her out of the camp and stepped up beside her as they left, tilting his head slightly as he looked her over, doing his best to be subtle. He was worried about her; was she scared of the foxes coming to attack them again, or did she not want to be alone with him? She definitely wasn't just sleepy, they'd met for early morning patrols and it hadn't been like this. Something was wrong with her. "Dawnmemories," he murmured softly, "you don't have to do this just to prove a point. If you aren't ready, you can go back, nobody has to know."

Dawnmemories paused in her stride as though suddenly frozen. She let a silence stretch for a few moments before sighing. "I'm okay, Sootstep. Just glad you're okay." Part of her had wanted to spill all her fears and nightmares to him, another part had wanted to bury her face in his fur, and the smallest part of her had wanted to snap at him. Instead, she tried for the neutral approach. They were not friends but they were clanmates, and worrying about the health of one another was not out of the realm of possibility. There was something intense in her voice though, something that proved she really meant it.
He still didn't believe she was being honest; there was a small chance she was, but after all these moons he thought he could read her well enough to know when something was wrong. But it was clear she didn't want to tell him, for one reason or another, so he bit his lip and turned away. "Fine, then," he muttered, a little too sulky, a little too hurt, and pushed past her. He took the lead of the small patrol as he headed onward, trying not to think about how genuinely glad she sounded that he was okay. They were clanmates, that was how it worked, and even if they didn't get along they could still care about each other's well being, right?

dawn: *says something nice* soot: *sulks* xD
She didn't respond to him, just followed along obediently. The day was undeniably a beautiful one and Dawnmemories felt tempted to relax and enjoy the sun and wind, but she stubbornly forced herself to remain on high alert. Last time the foxes had been able to surprise them, something that probably gave them the advantage and allowed her and Sootstep to get so many wounds, but that wasn't going to happen again. The red warrior didn't plan on hunting, instead she would cover Sootstep as they went. It wasn't because she felt him incapable, it just made her feel more in control of the situation.
Sootstep didn't take her far; he didn't want to test his healing wounds too much yet, in case they reopened. He already worried that the bite on his side was going to leave him with a horrified scar, and while he hoped it wouldn't, if he didn't allow it to heal he was sure it would. He stopped not far from the camp and glanced at her. "We'll hunt here. See what you can find, and... let's get this over with." He suppressed a sigh at the familiar words, wishing it would be different for once. The gray tom took a few steps further and lifted his head, checking for prey scents, his head cocked slightly at he listened.

yeah its just like soot
Anger flashed through her but she pushed it down, very much trying to control her temper as she responded, "fine. Whatever." Dawnmemories slunk away and made no attempt to hunt, instead taking up a post in the trees close enough to keep an eye on Sootstep. As she watched she felt her mood darken. Let's get this over with, hadn't she earned more than that? They'd just been through an awful lot together and yet she was still a thorn in his paw. Dawnmemories scored the ground with agitated claws as she thought, confusion and hurt making her feel way too emotional for her own good. This was always the moments when Dawnmemories said and did stupid things.
