"He didn't tell me yet," Juniperdust said, annoyed at Mallowmusk's rather asinine reaction to a rather boring tom appearing to take any interest in her. Her smile remained bright, though. "I'll wheedle it out of him soon enough. I'm so happy for you, Mallow."
Juniperdust knew she had to move quickly. Over the next few days and weeks she had many interactions with Brackengold- some on purpose and some 'accidental'. She minimized Mallowmusk's interactions with him as much as possible, urging her to not be the first to admit her feelings, and maximized her own time with the tom in order to 'get to know her future brother-in-law' and 'lay the groundwork for him to be accepted into the family'.
In these private times with Brackengold, she kept herself the right level of interesting- funny, witty, smart, brave, but also sweet, sometimes shy, occasionally in awe of something she learned about Brackengold. Physical contact was frequent and alternated between purposeful and seemingly thoughtless. Juniperdust could tell the tom was becoming quickly enamored with her, and she just hoped that on one of their walks that he would confess it to her. At dusk one day, when she was sitting by the stream, she looked up to find him emerging from the bushes, and she offered an immediate and glowing smile that suggested that he was the only cat in the world who could make her feel so gleeful at the sight of him.

It was strange, how quickly he had gotten to know Juniperdust. As much as he had enjoyed Mallowmusk's company, he had to admit that her sister was just...different. She was effortlessly charismatic, and they connected. He truly felt like they had that spark. Yet, there was a part of him that felt almost bad, for falling in love with the she-cat's sister, when he had almost been ready to woo Mallowmusk and ask her to be his mate before all of this.
He was in his own crossroads, choosing between the two sisters.
Juniperdust caught him in a moment when he was still trying to figure out what he was going to do. Spotting her, his eyes widened in surprise and then in delight. "Juniperdust," he greeted brightly, "how are you today?"
In Juniperdust's world, all roads lead to her. So for his own sake, it wouldn't do to spend too long at that crossroads. The warrior didn't even want him as a mate, but she would cross that bridge when she came to it. All she knew right now was that Brackengold could not be allowed to choose Mallowmusk over her.
"I'm good," she said, eyes warm as they roved over his figure in apparent appreciation. "And my day just got even better. I was hoping we'd run into each other soon. How have you been?"

"I've been good, I was about to go out for a walk," he gave her a sunny smile, "would you like to join me?" He still had yet to choose between the two sisters, but right now, his attention was fully on Juniperdust.
"Absolutely," Juniperdust said brightly, standing and rolling out her shoulders. They set off in the direction he'd been heading, picking up some old conversation, while Juniper thought of some new angle to attack this from.
It was taking too long, and her sister was impatient for Brackengold to ask her out. So if this tom was going to spend forever vacillating between the two of them, she'd simply remove one of the options for him. "-and you know, I've never caught a robin as big as that since," she said, laughing along with the tom. "I think I saw a bat near as big though, just the other night. It was out by the border, right when I saw Mallowmusk with-"
Suddenly she clamped her mouth shut, looking a little ashamed. "Oh. I didn't mean to bring that up. I don't- I don't think anyone was supposed to see who she was with."

The tom felt his face turn warm, and he gave her a nod, hoping that the flush wasn't visible on his cheeks, as they went along, conversation picking up as they went. He had to admit, he was only half-heartedly listening to the stories; there were things he had to consider. Mallowmusk or Juniperdust? She was being as charismatic as usual, but there was a part of him that still cared for Mallowmusk, and in a way, they had grown up pretty close, compared to Juniperdust...
When she mentioned Mallowmusk's name, he looked up almost immediately. Wait, what? He didn't want to come to conclusions yet. She had other friends she hung out with, right?
"Mallowmusk?" he tried to keep his voice casual, "who was she with?"
“Oh,” Juniperdust said, reluctance coloring her tone. If she had hands, she’d have been wringing them- as it was, she kept walking, though her mouth was turned down in a frown. “You have to promise not to tell her I told you- she doesn’t know anyone saw them. I would hate to sound like I’m gossiping about my sister, but maybe you can give me some advice?”
When he nodded, she flicked an ear back and continued. “She was with some loner, from outside the clans. They were… well, doing things it’s not polite to say. Normally I wouldn’t mind- she’s told me about her previous boyfriends- but I know for a fact that she’s seeing some tom from Springclan right now. She told me a few days ago, and I’m the only one who knows. I hate to think of my sister double crossing her boyfriend with a loner, but she’s always been so swept off her feet by any handsome tom that she has a hard time keeping her mind on any one of them for longer than a week.”
Juniperdust raised her gaze, shielding the gleam in them behind concern and confusion. “Do I tell her Springclan boyfriend that she’s fallen for someone else, or do I let Mallow figure out her own thing? After all, I’m not even supposed to know, and I’ve been the only one she trusts enough to tell about her romantic encounters. I just don’t know what to do.”

He blinked in surprise. She had never told him anything about that. A flash of hurt crossed his eyes. Here he thought they were friends, or well, better than friends actually. He thought...he thought she liked him or something, but she was seeing someone else? From another clan too? He couldn't compete with that; cats from the other clans always seemed more interesting, right? Always greener on the other side? She had mentioned once or twice that there were times she didn't feel like she fit in to Summerclan at all...was that why?
"Oh," he replied flatly, "I uh...she never told me about her boyfriend. I thought...nevermind," he frowned. It didn't sound like Mallowmusk at all but maybe he just never knew her as well as he thought he did. He laughed a little to himself, before looking up to Juniperdust. It must've been strange for her to see him laugh so suddenly.
"It's...nothing, nevermind," he replied quickly, shaking his head, "I just...I guess I never thought Mallowmusk was that kind of cat, you know? She always seemed so...quiet? Down to earth I guess?"
"Well, she only just told me about him, and I'm her sister," Juniperdust said reassuringly. "I figured she wouldn't tell you yet, since she wasn't sure if it was a permanent thing. And she is quiet and down to earth. Can't you be those things but also be in love?" For a moment the gray-furred she-cat looked almost insulted, wondering if Brackengold was implying Mallowmusk was some kind of liar.
After a moment she shook her head, sighing and drawing closer to the tom. "I guess it would seem unlike her to someone who doesn't know her as well as I do. We tell each other everything- and it's because she's so quiet that she got caught up in this mess. I'm not trying to imply she's being malicious- quite the opposite, actually. No doubt the loner sweet-talked her into being unfaithful to her boyfriend. She's always fallen so easily for any tom who gave her a second glance. Mallow's such a romantic that she gets swept up in it before she makes up her mind."
Juniperdust paused, noting the hurt and confusion on his face with a flare of triumph. "Oh, I really shouldn't be saying any of this. I sound like a mean sister," she sighed softly, glancing down at the forest floor. "It's just that I don't know whether to tell her boyfriend. I'm sorry to pile all my problems on you, but you're my closest friend and I feel so lost."

He was still feeling a load of different emotions at this new revelation. He wanted to ask her, but how would he even approach it? A sigh left his mouth; no matter how he came about it, it'd sound passive-aggressive to the other cat, like he was just some jealous tom who had nothing else to do. Ugh. He was now just stuck in a weird spot with Mallowmusk; he wished he had never heard this right now.
Yet, it made his choice so much more clear. Infinitely clearer now. He was certain Juniperdust had some sort of interest in him too, and it couldn't hurt to give it a shot, right?
"It's okay," he gave her a kind smile, "I get it, you're just worried for her. Any good sister would worry about a cat breaking their sister's heart, right?"
He smiled, before looking to his paws. "I had something to ask you too," he admitted, "or well...something I wanted to talk to you about."
Good. This was exactly the direction she wanted it to go. Juniperdust found it hard not to smirk, but she managed to keep a neutral face as she lifted her gaze to his. "What is it?" She asked quietly, watching him with a faintly hopeful light in her eyes.

His face flushed, as he looked to his paws, and then around him, before turning to Juniperdust once more, a softness in his golden gaze. "You're honestly amazing, you're easy to talk to and one of the brightest cats I've ever met," he admitted, "and whenever you walk into the space, you just light everything up. I just...I want you to know that you're my best friend too and...will you be my mate?"
Juniperdust could’ve been an actress if she was human- the sparkle never left her eyes, but instead grew as he spoke. Her ears flushed red and a smile grew across her features.
Internally, though, she wanted to vomit. What a simpering, asinine fool. How easily these cats could be tricked! Frankly, it disgusted her, and she could never love someone she didn’t respect- which meant she could never love anyone who didn’t see right through her.
“Of course,” she whispered, reverently. “I was hoping you felt the same way, but I was scared you didn’t. Of course I’ll be your mate, Brackengold.”
Not that she’d follow through, but she’d figure out a way to resolve that issue in the near future.

His grin could've taken up half of his face at this point. He immediately closed the distance, pulling Juniperdust close, relief and jubilation in his eyes. "I'm so glad you said yes," he murmured, "I love you, Juniperdust."
Oh, gross. And totally insincere- half an hour ago he hadn't picked between the sisters, and now Juniperdust was supposedly his true love? She pressed back into his side, resisting the urge to smack him upside the head. "I love you too," she breathed, letting herself rest in the embrace for as long as she thought he'd want.
After a moment, she pulled away, smiling. "Will you give me a few days to tell my family, before we announce it publicly?" That would give her the time she needed to figure out a solution to all of this.

He nodded with a smile. "Of course," he replied, wondering himself if he should be the one to tell Mallowmusk or not. Then again, he didn't owe her anything right? Surely it'd be better to hear it from her sister? "Are you going to tell Mallowmusk?" he asked. She was his best friend after all, "or should we tell her together?"
That was a good question. Juniperdust didn't want to hurt her sister- that had never been her intention. She just wanted to win; and now that she had, Brackengold had lost his one, puny shred of appeal. She wouldn't wave him in front of poor Mallowmusk and taunt her. "I'll tell her. But tomorrow, though. I want today to just be for us," she said, smiling up at him.
After a pause, she tilted her head. "Can I show you my favorite place in the territory? I keep it hidden normally but... well if we're going to be mates, I want to make it official somewhere special." Juniperdust let the faintest maidenly flush color her cheeks.

Brackengold nodded. "I won't until you do," he promised, before nuzzling her cheek with his muzzle affectionately. His eyes brightened as she spoke of her favourite spot. "I'd be honoured," he gave her a smile.
"Thank you, my love," Juniperdust said through her nausea, keeping that same simpering smile on her face. "Let's walk in silence so we can bask in this moment."
Juniperdust needed the silence to think, to plan out her actions once they arrived at their destination, but she allowed the stupid tom to press against her as they walked, her mind whirling with the steps she'd take to settle everything.
Her favorite place happened to be up alongside the river, on a particularly steep cliffside. It was surrounded by brambles, secluded and quiet. There were a few wild flowers along the edge, but other than that it was dusty and dry. "I know it isn't much at first glance," Juniperdust told him with a soft smile. "But look at the view of the river over the cliffside."

The tom didn't notice the look on her face, simply basking in his newfound happiness, so elated he was still looking at Juniperdust with only rose-tinted lenses, as they stood along the river, his eyes warm and basking in the dappled sunlight that warmed their fur, created patterns upon the ground and the swirling river. The flowers were scattered, but the brambles and bushes made it a secluded spot, the sound of the churning water filling the air with a white noise.
"I love it," he spoke softly, before turning to her with a smile, "you know, sometimes when the sun hits everything right, the world just turns into this green and gold, you know? This would be a perfect spot to see everything during the golden hour. I think I was named after it, you know. How even the bracken turns gold in the right light."
