"We'll solidify the plan when we get there," Juniperdust said, reaching over to nudge his shoulder casually as they kept walking. The gray-furred warrior pulled all her natural social talents during that walk, spinning amusing tales of her recent patrol mishaps and bits of garden keeper gossip that her mother had fed her. The first step in getting someone to like you, especially in the way she was trying to get Brackengold to like her, was to establish that solid connection.
So she alternated her stories about herself with questions about him, inquiring after his favorite memories, his hopes for the future, his funniest stories. Nothing too deep or serious, but questions and stories with enough shallow vulnerability to plant the seeds of her plan. When they got to the shore, she paused in the grass, motioning him forward. "What do you think, now that we're here?" She asked with a wide smile, nodding towards the collection of twolegs and seagulls that were scattered along the sandy stretch.

He wouldn't have admitted it out loud but frankly, Brackengold was smitten with her. Juniperdust's laughter, her cheeky jokes and her light teasing, the way she chatted about everything and nothing in particular, she was...fun. He had to admit that. He had a soft spot for her sister Mallowmusk, but she had him wrapped around her finger.
The tom didn't even realize as he arrived at the shores. He gave her a few blinks, before looking out to the sand. There were certainly a fair few seagulls. "Should we see if the humans left any food behind?" he suggested with a smile.
Toms were so easy. Juniperdust had to resist the urge to roll her eyes. All you had to die was bat your eyelashes a few times and they fell at your feet. It was pathetic. "Yes, good idea," she said, smiling in response. With a flick of her tail she crept out, sniffing along the sand until she found a half-buried bag with some kind of twoleg food in it.
"Do you think this will do?" She asked, turning to Brackengold. "We can drag it closer to a hiding spot and then lie in wait for our ambush?"

He sniffed at the bag, the fries and whatever was left of some fish seemed to still be warm. Surely this would attract the birds, he nodded brightly. "I think so," he spoke, glancing around before spotting the nearby mangroves. "How about there?" he offered, "I'm sure we can hide around the roots and it'll be near where the water's spilling out from the river...they'll definitely gather around there I'm sure."
"Smart," she told him, nudging his shoulder appreciatively. Juniperdust leaned down, grabbing the bag between her teeth. She followed Brackengold to the hiding spot he'd indicated, before moving out to place the bag a few feet away. She returned to their hiding spot and crouched beside him, letting her fur brush against his side ever so slightly.
They waited in silence for a minute, until the first of the seagulls landed. The warrior turned to her companion, smiling softly. "I'll follow your lead," she said, inclining her head towards the obnoxiously squawking bird.

He grinned brightly at the compliment, before nodding at her words. Okay, he could do this. As they set up their little hunting trap, he could feel the other cat's fur brush against his, and his face flush slightly. If Juniperdust wanted to make sure he was into her, she certainly was doing a good job with this.
Giving her a nod, they disappeared into the roots of the mangroves as the trap was set. He eyed the food, before glancing over to Juniperdust, as if wondering whether she was okay and comfortable, before turning to their little trap again, his eyes brightening as a seagull fluttered down, and then another. It seemed like the message was spreading. He grinned, before giving the other cat a flick of his tail, a signal, as he lunged forward to chase the seagull.
Juniperdust followed hot on his heels, watching as he grabbed the body of one of the seagulls. The others scattered, and she leapt up, hooking her claws into the wings of the one Brackengold had caught and combining her weight with his to slam it into the ground. She helped pin it down as he broke it's neck, and then stepped back, grinning triumphantly.
"We did it!" She said, after catching her breath. "That was exhilarating. You're amazing, Brackengold! I've never seen anyone move that fast." Juniperdust met his gaze with her own sparkling green eyes, holding it for a heartbeat too long before flushing faintly and looking away.

He flushed, his ears turning a dark pink as they caught the creature, his eyes wide in both exhilaration and surprise. They had done it? They had done it! He gave Juniperdust a sunny grin. "I can't believe we actually caught one!" he exclaimed, poking it with a paw as if checking if it was truly dead, "this is crazy, you know–" he looked up breathlessly, "we make a pretty good team."
"Yeah we do," she said, bumping his shoulder with hers with another smile. "Here, kneel down and I'll put it across your back. We can carry it back to camp like the triumphant soldiers we are." With a quick movement, she laid the limp bird across his shoulders, then started off towards camp, with a new, peppy spring in her step.
Effortless chatter that she was, she kept up the conversation until the halfway mark, when she said with a somewhat embarrassed laugh, "I'm so proud of us- you know, I wasn't always good at hunting. In fact- well," she flushed, smiling down at the ground. "When I was younger, I wanted to be a garden keeper. I always found the flowers so enchanting- I haven't even told Mallow that, you know? Everyone expected me to be a warrior."

He grinned at her, all sunny and bright, as he crouched down, allowing Juniperdust to drape the bird across his back, trotting alongside with a jovial grin on his face. It was nice, he figured, talking to her. She was friendly, they had pretty good conversations, and she was interesting. He smiled at her words, giving her a chuckle too.
"I almost became a garden keeper myself," he admitted, "something about learning how the earth grows...it was really intriguing when I was younger but...you know, the warrior life called me I guess. Why do you think everyone expected you to be a warrior?"
"Really? I never would've thought you were into that," she breathed, though her sister had fed her that exact bit of information. "I guess we have more in common than I ever thought."
At his question, she glanced down, shrugging after a moment. "I suppose because I'm the eldest in the litter, and I've always been self-assured and physically strong. I enjoy being a warrior, really, but sometimes I can't help but think I've sold out somehow by listening to what everyone else expected of me instead of my heart. I'd hate to disappoint my siblings, or my mother."

He gave her a frown, sympathetic to her situation. "Yeah, I get that," he spoke, "to be honest I'm in the same boat, you know? There's not a lot of male garden keepers. I doubt my dad would've liked seeing his only son go into garden keeping instead of being a warrior. I mean, it's fine now but sometimes I feel like the grass is greener on the other side too."
The tom felt a sort of kinship with Juniperdust, almost stronger than the one he felt with Mallowmusk right now.
"Maybe we can take a few mini-lessons together," Juniperdust said softly, glancing up at him with a smile. "I think it's great that we both want to explore that side of the clan. I'm so glad you understand the pressure- it makes me feel less alone."
Deftly, she maneuvered the conversation to another topic, keeping him chatting until they were at camp. "We should do this again some time- go hunting, at least, not necessarily take down a seagull," she told him warmly, touching her tail tip to his shoulder before saying goodbye.
After he'd left, she turned around- and came face to face with Mallowmusk. "Oh- hey!" She greeted, glancing over her shoulder at Brackengold. "What have you been up to today?"

He smiled at her warmly. "Of course," he spoke, "it's good to know I'm not alone either." They continued to talk on the way back to camp, but by the end, he certainly was smitten, his eyes glowing with warmth as they said their goodbyes. "I look forward to it," he smiled at her as they dropped the seagull in the fresh-kill pile amidst other warriors congratulating them for their accomplishment.
Mallowmusk had seen his sister enter the camp with the tom she was talking to, and immediately she wondered what they had spoken about. She had always trusted her sister. "Oh hey," she spoke, glancing towards the other tom, before turning to Juniperdust with a giddy expression. "I was just helping the others find some watermint today...what were you up to?" She mouthed the words: 'did you go on a patrol with him?' afterwards, giving her a look that told her to spill the tea.
As soon as Brackengold was out of sight Juniperdust forgot him completely, letting the starstruck look fade out of her gaze before she looked back to her sister with a smile. Clearly Mallowmusk wasn't concerned by this- in fact, she seemed excited. Juniperdust adjusted her own expression to be conspiratorial and upbeat, before nodding.
"Sure, we can head out for a walk," she said, with a wink and a nod and her sister's mouthed question. She led Mallowmusk out of camp and into the privacy of the woods, waiting for her sister to ask the first question.

Mallowmusk was almost giddy with the thought of getting to know what the two of them were talking about. As soon as they were earshot, she immediately turned to her sister with bright eyes. "So what do you think?"
Juniperdust broke into a set of nearly girlish giggles, nudging Mallowmusk's shoulder. "He's great, Mallowmusk! I can definitely see you two together. And-" she lowered her voice, grinning widely. "He's totally into you! We barely talked about anything other than you. Eek!" Juniperdust could've vomited at her own shrill exclamation of excitement, but she kept it together. "But you can't confess your love yet- he's working up the courage to ask you out, and he really really wants to get it right. But I can keep feeding him information for you!"

She blushed. "Really?" she asked breathlessly, feeling her ears turn warm, "do you think he'll really ask? Oh gosh Juniperdust, thank you, thank you, thank you!" She truly believed her sister was being the wing-woman to the man of her dreams.
"Of course, Mallow," Juniperdust said, pressing her nose to Mallowmusk's cheek. "I do think think he'll ask. He said he's slow about these kinds of things though- so be patient and give him time, and I'll keep dropping hints." She winked at Mallowmusk, before nudging her side. "Let's go split some freshkill in celebration of your upcoming nuptials, eh?"

She was practically skipping along Juniperdust, giddy with excitement. "Really?" she asked brightly, "Oh I can't wait! Did you ask him how he was going to do it? Oh Juniperdust, can you believe it?" Her eyes were glowing at the thought of being mates with Brackengold.
