(flashback to an undetermined time period, when Juniperdust and Mallowmusk are freshly promoted)
Juniperdust was cleaning the last of the meat off her mole, sprawled in front of the warrior's den. The day was a temperate one, the late afternoon sun beating down on the clearing. Her mind was busy analyzing the patrol she'd been on that morning, double checking that she'd said all the right things in her conversations. Her eyes scanned the cats gathered idly, but nothing was really new. Everyone was talking to cats they usually talked to, except...
Her ears perked up, focusing on her sister near the camp entrance. She was walking in with... a tom. One she recognized, but not one she'd ever seen Mallowmusk do more than talk to in passing. They appeared deep in conversation, and the gray Juniperdust watched with keen interest, trying to understand the changing relationship.

Mallowmusk had always been painfully shy. Out of the three of her siblings, she was the quiet one, the youngest one. Heathfire and his sarcastic quips seemed to make easy friends and easier enemies, while Juniperdust's mischievous grin and charismatic smile easily won others over. It had taken her a while to even open up to the other trainees when she was growing up, and even more so to anyone who showed her interest past a brief acquaintanceship.
Except...this tom was different. She didn't know what to think; he was charismatic, bright, the kind of cat that just stole her breath whenever he was around, and despite her admiration for him, they barely talked until they were assigned on a patrol together and well, it turns out they actually had more in common than she thought. They had similar feelings, hopes and dreams for the future and he had a sense of humour she enjoyed.
Mallowmusk barely noticed Juniperdust's presence, too enveloped in chatting with the tom that made her cheeks pink to notice anything around her.
Juniperdust kept her eyes on the two, her prey carcass forgotten under her paw. She was so used to Mallowmusk being the quieter sibling, the one everyone forgot. It was so unusual to see anyone expressing interest in that she couldn't look away. There was a strange heat in her stomach, lit by the knowledge that at this moment in time, the tom thought more highly of Mallowmusk than herself- since she'd only spoken to the warrior a few times in a very surface-level way.
The longer they chatted, the more lively Mallowmusk became, the more annoyed Juniperdust got. What was so special about her sister, anyway? Why did he look at her like that? Her paw flexed unconsciously, snapping the fragile ribs of the mole into the dirt, and she forced herself to take a deep breath.
As soon as the two broke apart, Juniperdust made her way over to her sister, drawing out that charismatic smile. "Hey! How was your patrol?"

As the tom said his farewells, Mallowmusk couldn't help the blush that appeared on her face, a soft pink lighting her cheeks as she said her own shy goodbyes, and the giddy feeling filled her heart, a fluttering in her stomach she couldn't quite describe. She was still watching him disappear in the distance when Juniperdust trotted over with a smile.
Mallowmusk immediately turned to her sister with a grin. "Oh it was great," she murmured, the dreamy look still in her eyes, "have you ever talked to him?" She gestured to the tom who was just leaving. "He's just so dreamy."
"I guess that's one word for it," Juniperdust responded, glancing after the tom before letting the smile spread wider across her face. Inside she was seething at the thought that Mallowmusk had the opportunity for something that she didn't have. Whatever. She'd get to the bottom of this, and perhaps she could dissuade Mallow out of this foolish little girl crush act she was putting on.
"What did you guys talk about?" She asked, nudging her shoulder playfully. "I've only spoken to him once or twice, but you guys must've made a real connection for you to be so... gushing."

If Mallowmusk had paid just a little more attention, she would've seen the flash in Juniperdust's eyes, the way her smile seemed more feral than kind, but she was all trusting and never doubting, and Juniperdust had been her best friend after all, and her sister. Why should she doubt the other cat?
"Just little things, what kind of prey we like, our favourite hunting spots, you know, all of that," she mused, before turning to her sister with a blush, "did you know he used to want to be a garden keeper when he was a kit? That's so cute, you don't usually meet a lot of sensitive guys around here, you know?"
Oh, bother, Juniperdust thought, masking the eye roll she wanted to do with a wider smile. All of this blushing and fawning over what? That tom who had no real ambition and wanted to make flower crowns all day? Boo-hoo. She didn't like seeing her sister acting this way. It wasn't like her and if she could get this emotional over a guy, what was next? Growing a backbone? Standing up for herself? This had to be nipped in the bud.
"That's really sweet," Juniperdust enthused, glancing over and surveying the tom again, jaw clenching when she realized he was glancing back at Mallowmusk. Mallowmusk getting a personality was one thing, but someone looking at her sister rather than at her was a whole different level of wrong. "Are you going to let him make the first move? You should- someone as sensitive and romantic as he is would probably want to woo you his own way, you know?"

She blinked at Juniperdust; was she going to? Was he going to? Frankly, she had never held the interest of any tom before, unlike her sister. Juniperdust was always the one surrounded by friends and other toms, so surely she'd know how to approach all of this, right? Her bright eyes turned to her sister. "Do you think so?" she asked, blinking, "what should I do? I mean, I really do like him...but you know...I've never really had this kind of relationship with a cat..."
"It may seem daunting, but it's easy," Juniperdust assured her sister brightly. "You have to let it happen naturally. Don't be too forward, and give him time and space to make the first move. I'm sure he will." Truthfully, it was better for Juniper if Mallowmusk was encouraged to remain passive. That gave her the time to figure out how to dismantle this romantic relationship before it got started. "Wait for him to approach you so you don't seem overbearing."

"What do you mean naturally?" Mallowmusk fretted, "I don't really know how to act natural...I mean, it's just I really like him, and I dunno...what if he's waiting for me to make the first move too?" She seemed unusually concerned. Mallowmusk was always the type to listen to Juniperdust without hesitation, but when it came to the matters of love, it seemed as if her heart was speaking another story.
"He's not, I promise," Juniperdust said emphatically, shaking her head. "Don't rush this, Mallow, you'll ruin it! Just stay friends for a bit and see how it unfolds. I'll be here for you every step of the way, but you have to promise me you won't rush it." She brushed up against her sister's shoulder, exuding a warm, encouraging energy despite the plot that was forming in her head.
Coincidental. It all had to look coincidental or the whole clan would be set against her. She also had to act before her sister's crush became apparent, or she'd be known as the boyfriend-stealer. Juniperdust timed her walk the next morning perfectly, intersecting the tom, Brackengold, down by the river.
"Oh, good morning!" She greeted cheerfully, a winning smile coming over her features. "Brackengold, right? How are you today?"

The warrior had been going about his daily routine when he heard the sound of another voice behind him. The tom's bright eyes turned to meet...Juniperdust? He knew of her from his sister, but frankly, he had never spoken to her before today. She always seemed like the type who only hung out with the other cool kids, the best of class or the handsome toms that seemed to think the world would be offered to them on a silver platter. He knew she was nice from Mallowmusk but...he felt almost a little wary, a little intimidated by someone like her.
"Um...yeah, it's Brackengold, you're Juniperdust, right? Mallowmusk told me she had a sister," he spoke carefully, tilting his head, "I'm doing fine, what brings you around here this morning?"
"Yes, Juniperdust! I was out for a hunt," she said, gesturing with her tail towards the blue sky padded with voluminous, cottony clouds. "It's a beautiful day for it- what about yourself?" Juniperdust paused, her own body language so assured that her stopping brought Brackengold to a standstill as well, as if her decision that they should stop and chat was divine law.
At the mention of her sister, she smiled, a softness coming into her gaze. "I hope Mallow's been telling you good things about me- like how I help her weave flower crowns- and not anything embarrassing, like my snoring tendencies."

He smiled at that. She was...nice, not like how he had perceived her in any other way. Usually the popular girls were...well, not all of them but some of them truly were bratty, but it was nice Juniperdust wasn't. "It really is a beautiful day, especially for catching birds too. Have you ever hunted by the sea? I remember the apprentices always talking about catching a seagull or something, I wonder if anyone's succeeded so far."
The tom chuckled. "All good things, I promise," he replied with a smile, "she tells me how much you mean to her. Told me that you two were best friends since kits, something about how you'd always play king of the mountain back in the day. I used to love that game."
"Oh, good," Juniperdust said, with a faintly bashful laugh. He seemed to like Mallowmusk's insipid blushing and shyness, so she figured she might use some of her sister's mannerisms to her advantage. "Yeah, we used to play that game all the time! It's one of my favorites, and Mallow's too. I long for those days sometimes, when we could play without worrying about any of our responsibilities. I miss those long afternoons with her."
"And I've never really hunted along the sea before," she said, though she absolutely had. "Did you want to go? Maybe we can bring Mallowmusk back a seagull- I wonder if it tastes any fishier than other birds?"

He chuckled. "I always tried to get to the top of the mountain but I was an absolutely horrible climber as a kit, you know. Sometimes I'd make it second but I think I only made it first...like once." He smiled softly at Juniperdust; it must've been lovely having a sister to play with. "I never had any siblings; it must be a lot of fun having a sister, no?"
His eyes brightened at the invitation. "I've never tried it myself," he spoke, "but they're so big it must be hard to catch...though it'd probably be a lot of fun to just try. What do you think? Wanna go try catching a seagull?"
"It was far more stressful at the top," Juniperdust said with a laugh. "You'd always be worrying someone was going to throw you off. The fun part was the climb, anyway." She flicked back one of her ears with a shy smile. "It's great fun. I have a sister and a brother, and I can't imagine life without them. They're the best friends I have in the world."
The gray-furred warrior smiled wider as Brackengold accepted her invitation, the triumphant gleam in her eye carefully concealed. "Absolutely! I think if we work together we can do it, and even if we can't I bet we'll have a good time. Lead the way," she added, with a bubbly laugh. "You lead, and I'll follow. We'll strategize on the way."

He chuckled. "I'm sure it is," he mused. The climb was fun, and it reminded him of how much he enjoyed being a kit back in the day. He had been one of the few kits without any siblings, it seemed. Playing with his denmates had been fun but there had always been something missing for him.
"That sounds good," he chuckled as he trotted along the river that led to the shores, "well all I know about those gulls is that they love to eat whatever the humans drop around. They're swoopers, apparently, but they're big enough to carry a whole kit away. Surely there must be a way to catch them unaware."
Juniperdust nodded thoughtfully along with his analysis. Brackengold wasn't an idiot, at least. Catching a seagull would be easy enough. "We can snatch one of the twoleg's snacks and leave it right by the grasses along the dunes. Then we could hide in the grass and pounce out when they land? If you have any other ideas, I'd be glad to hear them- that's just my first thought."

He nodded thoughtfully. "That could work," he grinned, "or...well, one of us can prowl along the coast, you know, not attack but keep them wary enough so they avoid us...and we can herd them into a smaller space before we pounce...but I think your idea is better."
