The sound of rustling in the bush and the sudden emergence of pheasant caught Asher off guard, but he was ready nonetheless. Good thing he already had his legs bunched under him ready to pounce and thats what he did. It wasn't a particularly large bird so it didn't take much to take it out. Just a quick bite to the neck and the deed was done. "Ravenmask, I did it!" he announced to the tom.

"YES!" Ravenmask meowed as he came around the bush. "Great catch! I wasn't sure if it was going to be caught. It seemed to be trying to leave in a hurry." He thought about the admiring looks they were going to receive when they brought their catch back to camp causing a big grin to form on his face. "Now let's see if we can find some more rabbits."
"Let's do it!" he agreed with a grin to match his companion's. "Where should we bury this?" he asked Ravenmask as he looked around the surrounding area. He was distracted enough so that he almost forgot that there may be predators lurking nearby. He had a sneaking suspicion that something may show up sooner or later. If he learned anything during his time with Link, it was to trust his gut. His grin faded. "Not to ruin the mood, but I dont think we should be here much longer, so lets make this quick, shall we?"

Ravenmask suddenly became alert and sniffed the air around him in search of danger but he didn't smell anything out of place. "Did you see or hear anything?" he asked. But before Asher could reply he continued. "Maybe we should take the pheasant back to where we smelled the last rabbits and bury it there." For some reason his flesh began to crawl and he wanted to out of here. He knew that foxes would sometimes come to the rabbit meadow. It had been a long time since any cat reported any signs of badgers but that was also a possibility.
Asher shook his. "I didn't hear anything, but I have a bad feeling. Better safe than sorry, right?" he replied as he continued to scan around them. "But, yeah, we should take it back there." If they were lucky, his gut was wrong. But, if it wasn't, they'd better be prepared for a fight. "Just out of curiosity, how familiar are you with fighting off foxes?" he asked innocently, not trying to alarm the tom.

"I've been in two fights," Ravenmask replied. "Both here in the rabbit meadow. The first one was when I was an apprentice. My mentor did most of the fighting but I was able to get a few licks in. It was an older fox and we sent it packing." He looked around carefully scanning the field as he walked briskly back to where they had come. He and his mentor had been fortunate that long ago day. If it had been a younger fox they faced, the story may have had a different ending. "The second time I was on a patrol with three other cats. The four of us easily took care of that one. How about you? Have you fought off any foxes yet?"
Good. So he has some experience. So there shouldn't be anything to worry if anything popped off.
Asher nodded. "Quiet a few, yeah, but they weren't too big, still on the younger side so it wasn't too much trouble running them off. My mentor was a firm believer in earning experience in fighting predators early on and that's exactly what we did," he explained as he started to make his way toward the rabbit meadow.

"Sounds like a rough way to learn the ropes," Ravenmask meowed. "But it must have been effective. You're still here to tell the tale." He stopped walking and looked around. "Here's where we decided to go after that bird. All this talk about foxes has made me a little skittish. I'll dig and you keep watch." The gray and black warrior began to dig in the soft earth.
"It was most definitely an interesting experience but well worth it in the end," he said proudly before turning to face the the thick brush. "I got your back," he said over his shoulder. If anything were to happen, it would be while they were occupied with prey. Hopefully, his gut was wrong for once. As he scanned the brush, he didn't see anything and when he scented the air, nothing seemed out of place. A sense of relief washed over him. Perhaps his gut was wrong for once?

Ravenmask worked quickly digging the shallow hole and covering over the pheasant. When they had come back to this spot, a light scent of rabbit had filled the area but now the air current changed direction and what he smelled made his fur stand on end. "Fox dung!" he hissed walking a few paces away toward the scent. "And I really mean fox dung. Look here and it's fresh too." He stood in front of some fox dung but was careful not to touch it.
Scenting the air, Asher caught the whiff of something foul as soon as Ravenmask mentioned it. Following the trail back to its source, it was a pile of fox dung. How could not have noticed it sooner? "It must have come through here while we were hunting. But that would mean it could still be around here, right?" he said as he turned around in a circle, looking for any other recent signs of the fox.

With a few quick scratches on the ground, Ravenmask threw dirt over the foul smelling pile. "With that stuff reeking the air around here, we'd never be able to smell anything else." He knew they needed their sense of smell most of all to help them find the fox. Then the irony of the whole situation struck him. "We came out here as the hunters but now I feel we're the ones being hunted. The sooner we find this menace, the sooner we can continue our hunt and the safer we can make our hunting grounds." Apprentices he knew would be the most at risk if they chose to hunt rabbits here. "We're Red Guard. We can do this!"
ooc: I'm going to be away on vacation until July 10th. (I'll be here until this Sunday.) I want to travel light so I decided to leave my laptop at home.
He nodded in agreement. "The sooner the better." Asher's whole demeanor changed with the situation they were in. What was once supposed to be a casual hunting event, turned to something that could mean life or death for the both of them if they don't remain vigilant. "It couldn't have gone far; it may still be around, lurking in the bushes." Out of the corner of his eye, he thought saw a flash of red, but, when he turned to look in that direction, there was nothing there.
He couldn't help but smirk though. I see we have a rather sneaky one on our paws.

(Thanks! I did! )
Ravenmask was emboldened by Asher's demeanor. Surely the two of them could take care of any ol' fox that might be lurking around. A slight rustling in the tall grasses made him turn quickly. "Over here," he meowed in a low voice. His eyes were fixed on a spot not far from where Asher was looking. "See how the grass is moving against the wind?" A light breeze was causing the grass to flutter to the right while other grass tops were moving about in an erratic manner. "It's got to be right there."

Asher turned his gaze toward the direction Ravenmask was looking, scanning the grass. Just as he said, it was moving against the wind and, if he squinted just a little bit, he could barely make out something that looked red in between the blades. "You're right. How do you want to do this?" the tom asked, quickly glancing over to his companion. He was sure the fox already knew they were there so they wouldn't have the elements of surprise, but they did have numbers. 2 against one seems favorable but one wrong move could be the end of both of them.

"It probably knows we're here," the gray and black tom meowed figuring Asher already knew that. "I think a head on attack might be the best strategy. We could split up and hit it from opposite directions but I really don't like the idea of spiting up. I think our attack would be stronger if we charged together. What do you think?"
Asher nodded in confirmation. "That would probably be the best option for us right now." As he stared at the swaying tall grass, he couldn't help but feel a bit nervous. Not nervous about fighting the fox but more so nervous about whether Ravenmask and him will get through this in one piece. This would be his first time fighting a predator with anyone other than Link in a while. We'll be fine...right? he said to reassure himself.

"Okay, let's ..." Just then a snarling fox face appeared through the tall grasses, staring directly at the two warriors. The fox barked rapidly as it bared it's fangs at them. Momentarily taken aback by the fox's sudden display, Ravenmask recovered with a snarl of his own. It had been a long time since he had fought anything, so he wasn't surprised he was feeling a bit nervous. The fur around his neck and tail was fluffed out making him look much bigger than he really was.
"Looks like we will have a fight," he hissed, summoning up all his courage and strength. Just as he prepared to attack, the fox lunged at them.
(I am SUPER late and I want to apologize for that.)
So much for a surprise attack.
Asher's fur bristled at the sight of the fox as he got into a defensive stance. He would have been lying to himself if he said he wasn't a bit nervous. But now there was no time for that. It was life or death now. Just as he was about to yell out to Ravenmask, the fox lunged at them. The tom tumbled to the side to avoid the attack. "Are you okay?" he called out, as he got his paws underneath him.

(No problem!)
"Yeah," Ravenmask grunted in response. He had barely dodged out of the way in time but had managed to lay his claws along the fox's flank as it passed. But he couldn't spare anymore words because the fox, angered by the pain, was rushing upon them again. He rolled back to his feet to meet it's next attack.
