The tom nodded in understanding. It must have been nice.
Asher's mood changed instantly with the mention of getting closer to the hunting grounds. He could use something to get his mind off of his envious mood. He was about to turn to look for where prey might be the most likely, the sound of Ravenmask's stomach growling almost made his laugh out loud. "If your belly growled any louder, it will scare the rabbits away," he joked.

"Let's hope that doesn't happen!" he said with a chuckle, hopping across the stepping stones. Then an idea came to him in a flash. "You know, that actually gave me an idea. Let's team hunt. I'll be the flusher and drive a rabbit toward you then you can do the catching. That way if my stomach decides to make it's presence known it wouldn't matter. What do you think?" He jumped off the last stone and stood in the rabbit meadow. The air over here always held a faint scent of rabbits and that set off his stomach once again.
Asher tilted his head from side to side, considering the proposal. Teaming up like that would make their job alot easier and could yield a higher reward now thay je thought about it for a moment. "Hmm...I think that can work. Besides I wouldn't know where all the sweet spots are," he replied as he surveyed his surroundings. "I'm ready when you are; just let me know and I'll gather them up. I'll follow your lead, Ravenmask."

"Alright then, let's get started," he meowed as he looked out across the meadow. "I know a good place that's not far from here. Usually can find a rabbit or two there. Follow me." The black and gray tom started walking into the rabbit meadow to the northwest. He'd stop every so often to check for fresh scents. It wasn't too long until he came to the place he knew. Here the smell of rabbit was much stronger causing his stomach to rumble again. Ignoring it, he turned to Asher. "There's a rabbit over there. Stay here while I circle around. I'll raise my tail up like this when I'm ready to begin flushing it out."
Asher nodded once in acknowledgment and followed behind Ravenmask to the meadow. With the high grass, seeing the rabbits might give him some trouble if they ran for it. That might prove to problematic. For this task he may have to depend on his speed and his nose rather than his eyesight. Hanging back as instructed, he watched Ravenmask begin to go to work on flushing out a rabbit. Getting ready to go when given the signal, he crouched down low and bunched his legs underneath him. "Ready," he meowed quietly.

Taking care to stay downwind and to keep his pawsteps noiseless, Ravenmask finally made it the spot he had picked out. Peering carefully over the grass, he saw the tips of two ears twitching just above the grass line. Alright bunny, it's time for dinner. Raising his tail to signal Asher that he was starting his final approach, he slowly moved toward the munching rabbit. He didn't want to scare it too soon so the first half of the way he used stealth but as he drew closer he allowed himself to make some noise. It worked! At the first sound Ravenmask made, the rabbit went on high alert. Then discerning the direction the errant sound had came, it took off hopping in the opposite direction. Unknown to the rabbit he was heading straight for Asher.
Asher saw Ravenmask's cue and went into action, propelling himself forward in a quick burst of speed. He had the rabbit in his sights but just as he as about to lunge, it changed directions and he barely missed it. Danggit. Scrabbling to recover his footing, he send grass flying behind him. The rabbit bounded a good distance away but not enough so that he couldn't keep eyes on it. Watching it run, he regained traction and resumed his chase. With his speed, he caught back up to it. Anticipating the rabbits movements this time, Asher caught it by its backside and latched, sinking his teeth into its pelt. It squeaked and squealed but it eventually lost the energy to do so. Quickly dealing the killing blow, he bit into the rabbits throat and it ceased movement. Dragging the corpse over to Ravenmask, he laid it down. "That worked out beautifully, if I do say so myself. Should we bury this and continue?" he asked the tom.

When Ravenmask saw the rabbit veer away from Asher the first time, he had helped in the chase, keeping the rabbit contained in one area. "Not bad," he meowed as he came up. "A good sized one too." The smell of the fresh rabbit made his stomach growl in anticipation. Here was food, why shouldn't they eat it? It wasn't like they were on an official hunting patrol. He sighed inwardly remembering the Warrior Code. What example would he be setting if he ate now? "As much as I want to eat it, we should bury it," he meowed reluctantly.
"That's probably a good idea. If you eat now, it'd probably slow you down anyway." Asher nodded and proceeded to bury the prey. "Where to next?" he asked with anticipation. That last chase gave him a bit of a rush that he could not get enough of. "Oh, and how much are we taking back?" He could only handle about three rabbits, depending on their sizes.

"Yeah, you're probably right," Ravenmask agreed. "As for how many, I think as many as we can get. But don't get too excited. I've never seen any cat bring in more than three rabbits at time. They're one of the most difficult creatures to catch." He flashed Asher a smile. "Takes a cat with good reflexes to catch one. Come on, I know another good spot for rabbits. It's over by the gathering place." As he led the way to the new place, a dark shadow passed over him. Looking up, he saw a pheasant silhouetted against the blue sky. It seemed to be searching for something. "Look," Ravenmask meowed softly. "I bet it's looking for seeds or bugs or something to eat. Let's follow it." A pheasant would surly be a prize to bring back to camp. One bird alone could feed three to four cats.
Asher was grateful for the compliment but he was too humble to accept it. "If you weren't helping yourself, I dont think it would have been that easy without your help," he meowed as he followed Ravenmask's lead. Noticing the shadow pass over them, he looked up. "How do you suppose we'd catch this one, eh?" Rabbits are one thing, but birds were a whole separate issue, especially the bigger species.

"It'll be difficult here out in the open," the black and gray warrior replied somewhat grimly. "There's very little cover from eyes that are above us." He looked around at the rolling hills of the rabbit meadow with it's waving grasses and dotted only with small bushes. "No doubt it already spotted us. It won't be landing anywhere near here." He sighed as he watched the bird as it circled in the air. Then another thought popped in his head and he groaned. "We won't be finding any rabbits while that thing is flying around. As far as I know, pheasants don't eat rabbits but hawks do. A rabbit wouldn't risk being seen out in the open in case it turned out to be a hawk. I think our best bet is to continue on toward the gathering place and hope the pheasant doesn't follow. But if it decides to land ..." He looked knowingly at Asher as he grinned and swiped his paw in the air. "We'll take care of it then."
Looking up toward the sky, he took in the sunlight. There was a breeze blowing, it wasn't too hot, and he was out building a friendship through a shared hunting experience. Prey was surely out there in abundance, they just needed to be found and killed. Life was good and there was nothing he could complain about. Although it was little disheartening that there wouldn't be any more rabbits to hunt, at least in this area. He nodded in understanding. "I wonder how we're going to take all of this back to camp," he thought aloud as walked along the track, highly confident that they will surely have more prey by the time they're done with this trip.

"Don't count your prey until it's killed," Ravenmask meowed with a happy laugh in his voice. "We've only got the one rabbit right now. We'll just quit hunting when we've caught enough." He was enjoying this time spent with Asher. It's a shame we didn't do this sooner, he thought. He's not a bad sort to be with at all. As he crested a small rise, he saw the pheasant which had flown much farther away from them land on the ground and go under a bush. And at the same time he got a strong whiff of rabbits coming from the opposite direction. What to do? Far off to the right was the pheasant, a terrific prize if they were able to catch it although chances were great they'd come up with empty paws. Or should they go to the left toward the surer catch, if you could even call catching a rabbit surer? Deciding to let his companion make the decision, he posed him the question. "Do you want to try for the pheasant who went under that bush way over there or go after some rabbits I smelled to the left?"
"Oops," he said with an apologetic smile, realizing he was thinking out loud. It was honestly a bad habit of his that he keeps forgetting to keep in check. "I mean there is still plenty of daylight for us to catch some more prey too!" It was, admittedly, a bit premature to assume that but Asher had his optimistic moments.
Passing over a hill crest with the passing wind, he could scent that there were rabbits nearby, however he missed the pheasant disappearing into the underbrush. It's not airborne anymore so it must have landed. Hearing Ravenmask's question of which to go after, he debated with himself. They could go after the rabbits which would probably be easy pickings but, on the other hand, they could go after the pheasant which would be more of a reward. He was starting to lean toward the idea of the bird but he ultimately shrugged. "I'm good for either one. It's up to you."

Ravenmask sighed inwardly with indecision. Then an idea came to him. Maybe we can 'have our mouse and eat it too,' he thought. "You know, if we're quick enough, just maybe we can try for both. Chances are the rabbit (or rabbits) are probably eating and will be there for a bit, while the pheasant on the other paw may just be looking for food and might not stay as long. Either way, if we go after the bird and miss it we'll probably still have a chance to catch the rabbits. What do you think?" The thought of bringing in a pheasant and some rabbits really made him excited, almost like an apprentice on his first hunt.
Hmm...maybe that could work. It makes sense. It was true that the rabbits wouldn't be able to dart off too far so they could go back to that if all else failed, whereas the pheasant had the air to escape to. Asher nodded once in agreement. "Let's do it. But what's the plan of attack here?"

Ravenmask regarded the bush thoughtfully where the pheasant had gone in search of food. "Maybe if we come at the bush from opposite directions, it might make it more difficult for it to escape," he mused. "If it sees one of us coming, it might try to flee in the opposite direction. Our only hope in catching it is to get it before it comes out from under the bush or as it is coming out," he amended. "Once it gets in the open, it can easily escape to the sky."
Asher nodded. "Sounds like a plan to me," he replied as he eyed the bush. "We should probably do this quickly before it catches onto us, " he suggested. Crouching low and avoiding dry leaves and branches, he inched his way toward the other side of the bush, but just in Ravenmask's site enough to see when he gave the cue to flush out the pheasant.

(No worries =^.^=)
Ravenmask gave Asher a quick nod of agreement then stalked stealthily toward then bush opposite from him. He was careful not to make any sounds that might give him away to the bird. It was slow but pleasant work for the tom. He hadn't had such an enjoyable time hunting for quite some time. A rustling sound came from the bush stopping him dead in his tracks. The pheasant was leaving! But in which direction? All of a sudden the big bird came running out of the bush toward Asher.
