Fisherkit struggled at first for being thrust down into the snow again but he stopped when he heard Sunkit's words. This sounded like a fun game she just thought up. The idea of being a protector appealed to him. "Sir Fisher," he mewed. "I like the sound of that. Are you a clan leader?"
That sounded like it was time for her to leave. Redpaw smiled and started to walk away. "You two have fun. I need to practice apprentice things. There's an assessment coming up soon and I want to be ready for it." She waved her tail at the two kits and walked off.
Sunkit ignored Redpaw's departure as if she had never even been there in the first place, her expression solemn as she considered Fisherkit's expression. "Yes, I'm clan leader. My name will be Queen Sunstar," she decided at last, and it was then she thought that sounded pretty nice. "This means you'll have to slay all of the sky ants before they get to me, Sir Fisher."

"All of them?" he asked as he looked around the camp. The whole area was covered with sky ants. The task would be impossible. Then he got an idea. "How about just the falling ones?" As he spoke, flake was falling toward her head. He jumped up and smashed between his paws. "Just like that!"
Startled, she crouched as he clamped the flake that was coming towards her, then straightened up and moved to kick her ruffled coat down. "Yes, just like that. But yknow, I'm not always gonna be standing still." In saying so, Sunkit darted away from him and zigzagged around the camp clearing, just as the snow began to come down faster.

"Hey!" Fisherkit called, laughing. He ran hard after her judging her zigzagging and jumped over top of her swiping away several falling flakes. After landing, he took off again making another leap taking care of more sky ants. "You're going to have to stand still if you don't want the sky ants to get you," he said puffing some air. His body was getting warmer as he ran around and because of that steam came out his nose and mouth as he breathed heavily. He stopped and watched the white wisps rise above his head. "Hey look! I'm on fire on the inside! I got smoke coming out my mouth!" His voice was laced with concern. His belly wasn't burning so why was he smoking?
On fire? Sunkit squinted at Fisherkit and got close enough to his face that her whiskers moved with his breaths, studying him closely as if she might be able to see fire on the other side of his eyes. "I don't see any fire, Sir Fisher, but," and she seemed to consider whatever was stewing in her mind, "I'll believe you. Maybe you can kill the sky ants like that? My papa said that 'fire kills everythin' it touches' so this means you'll be an even better guard!" Excitement flowing in her veins, she began to notice her own breaths puff into small, white clouds. "I have fire too! But where does it come from?"
Maybe they were the only two with flames in their bellies. Sunkit glimpsed around camp at the older warriors milling about, not noticing anything out of the ordinary, and even their denmates that were comfortably tucked away in the nursery didn't show any signs of this strange power that was inside her and Fisherkit. She sucked in a great gulp of air and then blew a stream of fogged breath into the atmosphere, a couple of falling flakes caught in the path melting away into nothing. "Maybe we've been chosen by StarClan," a now awestruck Sunkit whispered.

Fisherkit didn't feel like there was fire inside him but instead felt a little chilly from the falling sky ants. Then his eyes widened with surprise as he saw smoke billow from Sunkit too. He blew on a falling flake and it dissolved before it reached the ground. This was fun! He kept after the dropping sky ants until he heard Sunkit's last whispered comment. He stopped still in his tracks and stared right at Sunkit.
"Chosen by StarClan?" he whispered in awe, looking up at the sky. This seemed too good to be true. What if StarClan had given this special gift to them. "Do you really think so? But for what purpose? To kill sky ants?" That didn't seem very important to him. "It would have to be for something more significant than that."
"Maybe we should ask StarClan." That was the only feasible option, obviously. "But I don't know how to do that. Papa never talks about how he meets with them, so I don't know where to even start." Suddenlt, everything in camp was interesting to Sunkit, blue eyes flicking around to see if anything stood out to her as...StarClany. "See anything suspicious, Sir Fisher?"

"Nothing at all, Queen Sunstar," he replied as he scanned the camp. Cats were going about their normal business. In one corner a group of apprentices were practicing their battle skills, over at the elders den an elder emerged from his den and yawned. Graythorn left his medicine den and was walking towards the nursery with a bunch of leaves in his mouth. The sight of him gave Fisherkit an idea.
"Hey! He's supposed to be close to StarClan, right? Maybe he'll tell us how we can talk with them," he paused remembering something important. Although the gray medicine cat would know such a thing, it would be doubtful the grumpy cat would tell them.
But Sunkit did not consider Graythorn's willingness would be an obstacle in the slightest, donning a furtive but haughty look as she beckoned Fisherkit to follow her. "I think we can convince him." She crossed the lake of slain sky ants on prim paws, the size of her pads significantly smaller than where she stepped into Graythorn's imprints. Rather than following him into the nursery, she stood outside the lichen curtain until he reemerged, at which point she purred in her sweetest voice she could muster, "How are you doing today, Graythorn? Is there anything we can help you with?" She batted big blues eyes and flashed him a teeth-filled smile, an exact replica of her mother, Poppymask, when the queen was trying to get her way.

The last thing Graythorn wanted to happen today was to be pestered by kits. He greeted to two with a scowl on his face that slowly changed into a grin when he heard Sunkit's offer. With his apprentice out of the camp for awhile he could use some help around his den. "Well, I could use a couple of willing paws today," he meowed. "A couple of nests for sick cats in my den need changing. The moss is old and smelly. Come with me and you two can haul the old moss out to the dirt place."
Fisherkit let out a sigh and glared at Sunkit. She got them into this mess. "After you, Queen Sunstar," he meowed gesturing with a wave of his paw.
At Fisherkit's glare she shot one in return, swatting his nose with her tail. "Just wait," she hissed at him, but her tone quickly changed as she followed after Graythorn, prancing in step with the medicine cat. "Of course, Graythorn. My papa always says ta help out 'round camp wherever possible. We're happy ta help." Her companion maybe less so, and truthfully Sunkit didn't want to be stuck doing chores better suited for the sorry excuses SummerClan had for apprentices, but sometimes sacrifices were necessary. She adopted a speaking pattern very similar to the way Ratstar spoke, laying on some on that thick southern charm.

Wondering what Sunkit was up to, Fisherkit followed along anyway. His nose still tickled where her tail hairs brushed his nose. Stopping, he raised a forepaw to give it a quick rub.
Graythorn was surprised at the fluffy cream colored she kit's attitude, enough so that his normal grumpiness was buried at least for awhile. His eyes widened as he listened to her speak. Can tell she's Ratstar's kit alright, he thought. He had heard the leader speak numerous times. No other cat in all of SummerClan sounded like him until now. "Well, it's nice to see there's at least one kit in SummerClan with good sense. You'll make a fine apprentice and then a warrior someday." He glanced back at Fisherkit. His judgement was still out one that one however.
"Thank you, Graythorn," she purred, delighted by his compliment. She was thrilled to be in good esteem with StarClan's closest liason and thought it might be a good chance for him to pass along a good word for her next time he found himself convening with the ancestors, especially since it seemed she and Fisherkit had awakening abilities.
The pair did as Graythorn asked and managed to clear out the den of the raggedy bedding in not too much time. The sun was starting to descend from its peak by then, but every time they crossed from the threshold of the medicine cat den to the camp, their breath still clouded into puffs that reminded them of their mission to uncover why fire swirled in their bellies. After disposing of the last of the bedding, the she-kit padded up to the gray tom with her tail curled high behind her. "Graythorn, we've finished up." She stood beside Fisherkit and shuffled between her paws in some antsy little dance, eager to get some answers at last.

The medicine cat had been in and out of the den most of the time while the two kits were working, checking on the elders mostly. He looked about and nodded appreciatively. "Looks like you two did a good job," he meowed, flicking a piece of old moss from Fisherkit's back.
"Uh, thanks," the tom kit mewed. It wasn't often that Graythorn gave out compliments and it made him uncomfortable. "Uh, um, we have a question to ask you." He looked over at Sunkit. "You ask him."
"Ask me what?" Graythorn meowed looking at the she kit.
(just wanna say I really enjoy rping with you muzz!)
Sunkit expelled an exasperated breath at Fisherkit's lapse in bravado, noting how his gregarious nature seemed to have evaporated and left behind cowardice ever since they set foot in Graythorn's den. She wasn't sure why; she liked the grumpy tom ever since he complimented her like...an hour ago. "Well," she turned back to the gray medicine cat, her voice falling to a bare whisper, "we have powers and we wanted to know if you could find out from StarClan why they gave them to us."

(Thanks for the compliment! I enjoy rping with you as well! You've made thread very fun.)
The medicine cat's eyes widened at Sunkit's announcement. "Powers you say?" he asked, wearing an amused smile. He figured the two were playing some kind of kit game. He had seen them earlier romping about the camp chasing snowflakes. Now that his own work was caught up, he could spare a few minutes to humor these two. After all they did volunteer to do work for him so he owed them something. "So what can you do? Fly perhaps? Or can you turn invisible?"
Fisherkit had always been intimidated by Graythorn's gruffness. Once he had witnessed him stuff herbs down an apprentice only to watch the poor cat throw them up again right away. What he didn't know was the apprentice had swallowed a death berry and that was the only way to remove the danger. He thought the gray tom was just being mean. So seeing this side of the medicine cat really confused him. Maybe he isn't so bad, he thought.
(aww thanks! I love how Fisherkit's personality has affected Sunkit! It's really helped me develop her a bit more 🧡)
Sunkit shook her head at the medicine cat's ludicrous suggestions (as if breathing fire was not equally ludicrous). "No, not like that. We have fire inside of us. Surely StarClan must have a reason for giving us this?" The way she regarded Graythorn, with blue eyes sharpened by conviction, it was clear she fully believed everything that was spilling from her mouth. It would be disheartening if she learned that she was not part of some grand prophecy yet to be revealed to her. Weren't leader's kits supposed to be special, anyway? She wasn't sure what made Fisherkit special, but the ancestors must have had a good reason for it.

(Glad to be of service! =^.^=)
Gathering up some courage, Fisherkit decided to chip in. "Yes, we just discovered it this morning." He was beginning to feel like his usual self again.
"I see," Graythorn meowed. Thinking they meant they had a passion growing within them for SummerClan, he continued, "It's good to know you two want to grow up to be good warriors. You proved it already today by wanting to help out without even being apprentices yet. The passion you have - or the fire as you can call it - will make you assets to SummerClan."
Exasperated, Sunkit groaned. "No, Graythorn, fire. Real fire. We noticed it when we were playin' outside earlier, chasin' sky ants 'round." She would have glowed from the praise if not for the much more important matter at paw: Discovering their importance. She was nothing if not determined, tenacious even.
