SUMMARY – After the truth of Flamingstar's deserter mission came to light and her deputy was chosen, Dragondance finds himself attempting to get accustomed to life as a loyal guard. The name in itself is laughable. Surrounded on all sides by those he can hardly tolerate, his inability to find comfort in what was meant to be sanctuary may lead to desperate measures and drastic consequences.
The felines mingled amongst one another as they congratulated the new deputy, Raveneye, their cries of victory and excitement easily deafening. The tabby had no eyes for them, however; he slipped between them as water may between pebbles. Stopping in front of the black and white she-cat he had come to find so much joy and calm in, he stood in front of her and gazed down at her lagoon blue-green gaze, his own fiery orbs appearing distant yet warm. Without a word, he leaned down and nuzzled her cheek with his, closing his eyes and trying to shut out the world.
"I don't think we're needed for the after party." He took a step toward the camp entrance, glancing back at her in curiosity. He wasn't like his father. Ever since the beginning of their courtship, he had always given her a choice. Their sanctuary from the prying eyes of the NightClan cats was deep in NightClan territory, where the light of the moon and the warm summer breeze could offer them comfort where the dark tunnels of camp couldn't. He had so much to say, he felt like it would flow off of his tongue without his control... And yet all the same, he felt like everything he wanted to say he couldn't.
Not yet, at least. Deep within his subconscious, he also wondered what her genuine reaction was to the series of events that led them to this night. They needed time away to recover and plan their next steps.
She had been expecting this. His reaction that is. Her paws itching to go to him, she only needed to see his expression to know exactly how he felt about this whole thing. To others his eyes were fiery orbs filled with anger or otherwise unreadable. To her they might as well have been an open book answering questions she didn't have to ask. She didn't even have to move, he came to her and despite his obvious distress over the whole thing she couldn't help but flash him a knowing smirk.
Before she could answer she found herself following his lead towards the exit. While they both shared a dislike of the caverns and tunnels that made up NightClan's camp, she wasn't too eager to be out under the moon either. Swallowing her anxieties she gracefully took the lead headed out of camp, running her bushy tail under his chin as she passed him.
"Well? what are you waiting for?" she teased, looking over her shoulder at the large tabby before taking off.

Despite the warring emotions in his mind and heart, he chuckled, his cold expression melting away to a warmth rarely seen by many. Preparing himself, he leaped forward and followed her racing heart deep into the forest, fiery gaze focused solely on the black and white pelt that streaked in front of him.
It wasn't long before they met their destination. Slowing, he trotted toward the she-cat already placed in their spot and took a seat, wrapping his tail around her and nuzzling his chin atop her head. To many, it wouldn't have made much sense, the spot that they had claimed as theirs. To him, under the large tree nestled in its roots and gazing out at the rushing water of the river and its falls at the hot springs, it was beyond meaningful. In all ways, she had been his savior. There was a sort of sacred air about the meeting spot that he couldn't quite place, but didn't find himself questioning either.
He shifted his head to gaze into her eyes.
"So. Loyal Guard of NightClan." His tone suggested he was making a mockery of both himself and the clan's boosted ego, attempting to find light in a situation that he deeply considered twisted. "Thoughts?"
Koilagoon took a moment to let the calmly effect that their spot seemed to have, embrace her and wash her worries away. Even while illuminated red she couldn't help but feel at ease. She was well aware of his own qualms against being out at night but, she'd never burdened him with the knowledge that she had come to fear the moon herself. Even now she pushed all that down, just for the time being, and leaned into his embrace.
"Dragondance, Loyal Guard of NightClan" she spoke allowed taking on his own mocking tone. "I think it's a great opportunity that most NightClan cats would die for." she replied honestly, her tone taking on a serious note, but remained gentle as ever. "But you, are not most NightClan cats. So what are your thoughts?"

His expression had been playful, eyes dancing and smirk wide, but as though a dam had broken upon her genuine question, he found his smile falling away and himself growing distant as he thought over the events that had just transpired.
“What are my thoughts...” He murmured, more to himself than to her. Where could he possibly begin? He knew, deep down, she wouldn’t judge him or interrupt him as he vented, but even so he wondered — a small voice in the back of his mind needles — that perhaps despite their many visits to what was their spot, to freely express his thoughts wasn’t something that could be considered a safe course of action.
He swallowed subtly. “I’ve made my life here the best I can.” He started, gazing without focus out on the surroundings. He rested his chin atop her head, both as an affectionate gesture and to ground himself. “I’ve fought my way to this point. I’ve given them everything of myself that I can sacrifice.” He trailed off. “But I’m wondering... Did I make the right call? I gained from another’s misery. It’s something my...” He halted, closing his eyes and nuzzling into the soft, comforting scent of her warm fur, “He would have reveled in it. Does that make me the same as him? I didn’t object or voice anything I thought, I allowed myself to become a puppet in a game I hadn’t fully understood the rules of. I’m beyond grateful my supposed leadership skills were found lacking in that regard. The last thing I would ever want is to be deemed an appropriate deputy by how willing I am to be obedient.”
He grew quiet. “All the same, there’s a part of me that can’t get rid of the feeling that NightClan may be facing a much darker path now. If I had been offered the position, despite my not wanting it... Perhaps I could have fought for the salvation and sanctuary of those cats that feel the same way I do.” A flash of deep, emotional pain came across his face at that thought. There was no way they would look to him, they didn’t even know he existed, yet he felt like he had somehow let them down.
“I still hear his voice in my sleep. When Flamingstar and Frozenfire give me that look. The same one he used to give me all those seasons ago. The one that says they’re disappointed that I couldn’t make the kill.”
He took a deep breath to settle the pain in his heart. “All I want is to do right by my mother and by you.” He looked down at her. “I want you to be happy and comfortable. I would risk everything I have and everything I am for that. You know that, don’t you?”
He placed his chin back on her head. “I’ve done that, haven’t I? Being the mate of a loyal guard, even if it’s only one step higher in the hierarchy... it’ll make things easier for you?”
