Floodfate flicked drops of water from his paws as he backed away from the puddle, his muzzle scrunching up in disgust. The recent rain had turned the mud around his paws to sludge and the puddles were too clogged with dirt to make for good drinking water. Every time he stepped into them, his white paws were dyed a darker brown, and he was growing tired of it. If only he could spend the next few days in his nest instead of hunting. But he knew he was on thin ice with Flamingstar, and he could do nothing to aggravate her if he wanted to stay in the clan.
He slunk on around the puddle, sweeping his surroundings carefully for a sign of prey. His hopes rose at the faint splash of an animal falling into a puddle, but as he hurried toward it, he slipped into a another mud puddle himself and was drenched halfway up his leg. He cursed violently under his breath.

Darktalon wasn't sure how far she was allowed to venture from the camp. The prisoner decided it was best not test the mettle of the Nightclan cats. The dark brown tabby had settled just outside of the camp entrance, making sure the rest of the clan cats could see her. She twitched her frayed whiskers as she stared out into the forest
He followed after the prey sound with little hope of finding it - he had probably scared the animal away. The mud sucked up the scent trail, but there were tiny marks in the mud he could follow, and Floodfate realized his prey was a frog.
Eventually, the warrior had followed it back to the camp. The frog went hopping out of the bushes and Floodfate emerged to see it was heading toward Darktalon. "Hey!" Floodfate yelled.

Darktalon had been in a daze as she was prone to do. Her green eyes were focused on the ground, something she had recently learned to do rather then stare straight ahead. Her paws were curled underneath her as her frayed whiskers twitched in the slight breeze. She had given up on trying to demat her tangled coat. It hadn’t been bothering her much. She had nearly dozed off when she heard something up ahead. Darktalon had slowly opened her eyes and was startled at the sudden sight of the frog. With a surprised yowl she had jumped to her paws, eagerly scrambling back before realizing one of the warriors had been out hunting.
He growled in frustration at the prisoner's late reaction. Why wasn't she going to be on guard if she was staying this close to the edge of the camp? Floodfate pushed himself harder, but the frog veered away from the camp and raced into the bushes. He heard a gentle plop! as it escaped into the nearby water.
"Great," he muttered, "just great." Floodfate glared at Darktalon as he slowed to a halt in front of her. "Why didn't you catch it?"

"I... well..." Darktalon cleared her throat as she crouched down in front of the Nightclan warrior. She glanced up at him and then back down at the ground, her tail curling in on itself as she tried to answer his question. The soft voices in her head berated her once more. The dark brown tabby pinned her ears to her head. "Even... even if I did manage to... to try to catch it... I don't... don't think it would have mattered, sir..."
"Why not?" Floodfate stared at her hard. "It was fresh-kill for the clan. And it would get me out of this mud." His hostility toward her wasn't because she was a prisoner - the young warrior was always on guard around his clanmates and more than a little rough around the edges. His harsh nature was probably why he hadn't made any friends in the clan yet.

The matted tabby looked up at him, twitching her ears as she shifted her gaze down to his muddy paws. "Why... you can leave.. the mud... if it bothers you..." She muttered softly. "Frogs... they move to fast... very slippery..." She explained, trying to imagine how she would even manage to catch a frog. Rabbits, and birds she knew how to catch. But frogs were new to her. "Didn't... I didn't realize prisoners... could hunt... I was... I needed fresh air..."
"I chased it right toward you. All you needed was to a little bit of speed and you would have had it. I don't care if you're supposed to hunt, it was right there and you should have caught it," he told her. He spoke with condescending false patience as if he was waiting for a kit to understand the simple concept he was trying to teach them. "Now I have to find something else. I can't leave the mud until I have prey to bring back to camp. Flamingstar would make me a prisoner just like you if I didn't bring in anything."

Darktalon flicked her ears. She felt terrible about the inconvenience she had caused, but then again that was her lot in life it seemed. The brown tabby took a tentative step forward, nervously glancing back at the camp. "I... can help... perhaps...?" She questioned softly. "I... want to... want to make up for my... my mistake..."
Floodfate glanced at her distastefully. He was a loner within the clan, and he didn't spend time hunting with his clanmates when he didn't have to. He certainly didn't want to waste his time on a prisoner. His place within the clan was precarious enough, and talking with her might jeopardize the little bit of good faith he had earned.
But hadn't he decided just a few days ago that he wanted to meet more cats? If he practiced talking to a prisoner, then it wouldn't matter if he messed up, right?
The warrior deflated a little, but he nodded to her. "Yeah, alright. But if you mess up again, I'm sending you right back here. Got it?"

Darktalon nodded, smiling briefly for a moment before she quickly shook her head. She was glad that the Nightclan warrior was giving her a chance to make up for her blunder. The brown tabby would prove that she could be useful and not just a screw up. “I… I will follow… you then…” Darktalon stuttered softly
"Okay. Let's go." The gray-and-white tom turned sharply and headed back into the boggy woods. Once again the mud began to suck at his paws, and he had to bite back a hiss of frustration. "At least this cursed mud will hold onto any prey footprints we come across," he muttered.

"Hunting in mud... is hard..." Darktalon commented softly as she shook the mud from her own paws after lifting them up. The matted tabby looked around them, wondering if there was any firmer surface to walk on. It all seemed to be nothing but mud. Her whiskers twitched slightly as she paused and glanced off to her right. The land over there looked a bit firmer. Perhaps they could hunt over there? Were they allowed?
"Yeah. Even if we find something, we're going to get stuck in the mud and it'll be hard to give chase. It's pointless to try and hunt out here, but try telling everyone else that. These cats have rocks for brains," Floodfate huffed. He wasn't worried about speaking so poorly of his clanmates in front of a prisoner; nobody would believe her.

Darktalon silently made her way towards the land she saw. She tentatively placed her paw against it, to see if it was still nothing but mud. She was pleasantly surprised when she felt it hold under her weight. It was still a bit boggy, but not as muddy as what they had been walking in. She glanced back at the tom as she shook her paws. "We... can we... hunt... hunt here?" The tabby called out to him
His ear twitched back but when she gave no response he forged on ahead. If she wanted to walk in silence, then fine, he could do that. Being silent was the only thing Floodfate was good at these days. Resentment crept into his mind. Why had she even come if she was just going to ignore him?
Then he heard her call, and he stopped and looked back at her. Darktalon was standing firm on a piece of land that looked enticingly mud-free. Huh. Maybe she wasn't so useless after all. Floodfate made his way over to her and tested the land himself, then nodded, satisfied. "Yes, we can."
He stepped forward to take a deep breath of the afternoon air, then paused, and reluctantly looked over his shoulder at her.

Her chest swelled with happiness at the praise. She couldn't remember the last time she received anything of the sort. Her bushy tail curled up excitedly. "Will be... easier now... and your paws... paws won't be stuck in... in the mud..." She said as she stood next to him. "Easier... easier to track... too."
"Yeah," he muttered, not quite liking her excited look. Happiness was an infection, and he felt the stirrings of a smile on his face. Bracing himself, he swiveled his head away from her and took a breath to chase it away and resume his stoic look. Now was not the time to be distracted.
"Let's go." Floodfate stalked off abruptly, his head low to the ground with his whiskers flared and ears primed for any prey sounds.

Darktalon flicked her ears. The dark brown she-cat nodded as she followed him. She kept her steps as light as possible, not wanting to scare off any prey that might have been hiding in the brush. She didn't want to screw up again after receiving some praise, and she still had to make up for letting that frog go. Darktalon pinned her ears back. She had to focus now. The prisoner slowed her movements as she crept forward. The tabby froze for a moment, turning her head towards the base of an old oak tree. She crept forward, thinking she had heard something scratching at the base of the roots.
