The gray-and-white tom prowled forward with care, placing each paw gently on the ground to test for any crinkling objects before he rested his full weight. There was no sense in scaring away his prey before he spotted it. As he crossed the clearing his ear twitched back at a quiet noise, and he glanced back to see Darktalon creeping about. Was that how she looked for prey, or was there something there? Intrigued, he narrowed his eyes and watched closely.

The matted tabby was focused. Her green eyes had narrowed into slits as she stared ahead. Her eyes followed the rapid twitches and flicks of the squirrel's tail as it foraged for nuts it must have buried earlier. Occasionally the creature would lift its head up before returning to its foraging. Darktalon slowly crept forward while she carefully placed her paws on the ground. Her muscles tensed underneath for a moment before she pounced, practically diving between the roots of the old oak tree. It took the dark brown she-cat a moment before she backed out from between the roots. She turned back towards Floodgate with the squirrel hanging limply between her jaws
Eventually, creeping a few steps closer, Floodfate caught sight of the prey. It was a good find. He slipped after her in case she spooked the prey, crouching low to the ground and pulling himself forward in long, smooth movements. He was a warrior, and he wasn't going to be the one to scare the squirrel, so he kept an eye on the ground and felt around carefully before he took each step. It was slow and distracting, but his focus would pay off if she failed.
Then Darktalon was re-emerging with a mouth full of squirrel, and Floodfate was genuinely surprised. She had caught it. Maybe she wasn't so useless after all - she had found this spot, after all, and now she had a catch.
"You're a slow hunter," he said, apparently lacking praise today.

Darktalon moved closer to him and dropped the squirrel at his paws. The matted tabby smiled up at him shyly and dipped her head. "Squirrels... scare easy... must... must move slowly... or else... they run to... run up the tree..." She said. The Nightclan prisoner nudged the squirrel closer to him. "Now... have... now you have... something... something to... bring back... won't... show up with... empty jaws..." The dark brown she-cat twitched her whiskers as she smiled. Darktalon was simply happy that she was able to help the warrior after screwing up the first time with the frog she had let slip away
His ear twitched, thinking all prey startled easily, and she didn't need to move quite that slowly. There was no reason to say it aloud: she had caught the prey in the end, so what did it matter if she took ages to creep upon it? Floodfate stopped and stared down in surprise as she nudged the prey his way.
"That's your catch," he told her, reluctantly pushing it back with his paw. "You bring it into camp. Flamingstar will be happy to see you contributing."

Darktalon flicked her ears as she glanced back down at the squirrel. She looked back up at him and tilted her head. "We... stay then...? Hunt more...?" She questioned. She had thought that he needed to bring something back. He was a warrior and she was just a prisoner. She curled her tail up. "You take... the squirrel? If we find... nothing else...?"
Floodfate eyed her. What game was she playing here? The selfish tom wasn't going to argue with her, and he would be happy to take the prey in himself. He had only given it back to her because he didn't want any unsavory comments about his behavior reaching Flamingstar's ears. He thought she was going to take the excuse to leave and run straight back to camp, though, not try and hang around longer. Maybe she didn't realize it was an option.
The gray-and-white tom turned away from her. "We don't need to stay, I do. You can take that back to camp and show it off."

Darktalon tilted her head at his words. Was she allowed to go back? But then he would be by himself. The dark brown she-cat truly didn’t mind staying with him. Did he think she would cause problems? She could prove that she wouldn’t. Darktalon flicked her ears as she lowered her head a bit submissively. “I... I do not... mind staying... will not... cause problems... I will... be quiet... while... while you hunt...” She said softly. “I... do not know...” The matted tabby looked to the ground, nervously flicking her tail before she looked back up at him. “I... do not know... how to... go back... not yet... familiar... with the... with the territory...”
Why was she so determined to stay at his side? Floodfate was a lot. No cat wanted to spend this much time with him, not even his own family. The last cat to care for him this much was his mentor, and that was so many moons ago it was just a distant memory. What was she trying to do here? He didn't doubt she was playing tricks on him now, but he couldn't place his paw on just what she was expecting to happen.
"Camp is that way," he said, flicking his tail back the way they had come. "If you want to go." He didn't make her leave, not this time; instead, he turned back to the hunt. Floodfate stalked on deeper into the territory, staying on the solid land she had found and away from the treacherous mud. His ears were tuned in, listening for the sounds of prey, and despite his reluctance, for her footsteps.

Darktalon flattened her ears as she watched him begin to walk away. She glanced back to where he had motioned. The prisoner could return to camp, but she was afraid of what the guards might do if she came back by herself. From what she could tell, prisoners weren’t really allowed out of the camp without being accompanied by another warrior. What if they thought she had tried to escape? Darktalon shivered at the possibility of what her punishment might be. Better to stay with Floodfate and return with him. The matted tabby picked up her squirrel and hurried after him. She tried to stay as silent as possible, not wanting to ruin his hunt. But the dark she-cat knew that her best option would be to return with the Nightclan warrior when it was time to head back to the camp.
Floodfate was surprised to find a knot releasing in his chest. He hadn't realized how anxious he was about her decision. Darktalon was a prisoner, stuttering and soft, but she was still good company. He must be desperate to be relieved she had decided to stay with him. Though he didn't say a word to her, he did slow his step just a bit so that she could keep up with him without much effort.
Finally, the fresh scent of a vole reached his senses. It wasn't his favorite type of prey, but it would have to do. Floodfate stopped and focused on the scent, then prowled after it carefully. Every small step closed the distance between them once he spotted it, scampering along over the top of the mud. He summoned his breath and shot forward, catching up in a few quick strides and tackling the prey to the ground. One swift bite ended the vole's life.

Darktalon wasn’t sure if Floodfate would like the fact that she had decided to follow him. Anxiety gnawed at her stomach as she followed the warrior, but it quickly disappeared when she saw him slow his steps down just a bit. He must have heard her following her. Her whiskers twitched as she followed him in silence. The matted tabby paused the moment she saw Floodfate shift into a hunting stance. Darktalon slowly sat down, silently dropping her squirrel at her paws as she watched. When he managed to catch the vole he had been after, a short trill escaped her throat. “Did… it…! Very… very fast…! Voles… trickier… trickier than… squirrels”
"Not much," he responded dismissively, "especially if you know them well." Squirrels had been harder to find in his old territory than water voles, so he was used to creeping after the ground-dwelling prey. They were stout and meaty, and even if they were a bit shorter than squirrels, he preferred not to be picking tail hair out of his teeth all night.
"Now we both have one. Flamingstar won't be too upset with us."

Darktalon curled her tail up, her green eyes lighting up. "That... that is good...! Will be pleased... that... t-that we provided... for... Nightclan..!" She exclaimed softly. Her whiskers twitched happily as she bent her head to pick up her squirrel. "Vill... pwoove... I 'an... ve... ah... vawwiah..!" She said through a mouthful of fur
Floodfate stared at her blankly as she tried to speak around the prey, wondering what she was saying. He couldn't decipher the sounds she was making. "Yeah, whatever," he muttered back. "Let's just get back to camp, okay? Maybe Flamingstar will be so pleased with you, she'll make you a full warrior instead of a prisoner."

Darktalon curled her tail up happily at that. A warrior? She never dreamed of such a thing before. The matted tabby nodded earnestly, practically bouncing on her paws as she held her head up high. It was almost as if she were showing off her catch to the world. She couldn't have been prouder of herself and she had hoped that Flamingstar would be just as pleased with her catch
