Raveneye slipped out of the warrior’s cavern into the moonlit clearing. It was a bright and clear night, with the stars twinkling above adding to the light that bathed the camp. The dark she-cat took a deep breath as her good eye quickly flitted around her surroundings. Per usual, she noted every detail in her view. The food pile was decently stocked and some cats mingled around the clearing. Raveneye moved forward sticking to the shadows, a habit she has had since she was born. It gave her the best vantage point and made others unable to sneak up and take her by surprise. Maybe I should socialize and get to know others? She thought to herself. Her black tail curled around her paws as she mulled over her thoughts in silence.

Softpaw had just returned from a quick training session with his mentor, and wasn't sure what to do with the rest of his night. Following his usual route within the darkest shadows of the camp, the apprentice decided to find a quiet corner to groom himself. His silver bengal pelt became camouflaged by the darkness as he crept low to the ground. His eyes raked the clearing, searching for one of his tormentors, but he was hoping they'd be out on a patrol or something. Relying only on memory to lead his steps, Softpaw was caught by surprise when he nearly collided with another cat.
Grey eyes bulging, the apprentice stopped with his fur standing on end. "Uh, sorry!" he mewed. Though he was unfamiliar with the warrior, he wasn't sure how she'd feel about him. And recently, he'd been finding it hard to trust anyone.

Raveneye was startled out of her thoughts when a small body collided with her frame. Her black and grey pelt immediately bristled and her claws unsheathed themselves to dig into the soft dirt beneath her paws. Danger! Danger! Danger! echoed through her mind. When she noticed that it was just an unobservant apprentice, she forced herself to expel the feeling of danger that filled her. Slowly, her pelt smoothed back down and her claws retracted, leaving small indentions in the ground. Her ice blue eye slid over the apprentice’s form and she dipped her head, partly in greeting and partly to expel the embarrassment she felt of being caught of guard which was highly unusual given her hyper vigilance.
“It’s okay. I apologize as well. I seemed to have been so lost in thought that I did not notice you approach.” she replied, shifting so she faced the young tom with a curious glance. Her left eye, completely black in color and useless to her, copied the movements of her good eye as she scanned, making sure there was nothing else she missed that would take her by surprise.

His eyes flashed to her claws for the brief moment they were unsheathed, and he flinched back a bit. Though as she calmed down and faced him, Softpaw relaxed his nerves and offered a shy smile. She addressed him politely without the jabs or insults he was used to, which was refreshing but he didn't want to get his hopes up too soon. "Yeah, I was kind of out of it myself. Normally, I would have been watching where I was going." Now that she was facing him, he had a hard time not staring at her left eye, and he was doing a poor job of hiding his interest in it.

For a brief moment, Raveneye was concerned when the apprentice flinched away. He seemed to relax afterwards and she returned his smile with a polite one of her own. “Well, no harm no foul.“ she said, amusement lacing her soft voice. It was a new experience, having a conversation with someone without underlying hostility and distrust. It was hard for her to adjust to the fact that she wasn’t on her own anymore and not everyone had some sinister ulterior motive when conversing with her. The scars that could be found along her back and flanks served to her as reminders that not everyone had good intentions and would not hesitate to stab her in the back. The she-cat noticed as the apprentice’s attention shifted to her blind eye and the amusement she felt earlier came back. “I see you’ve noticed my eye. Interesting isn’t? Though the story behind it is quite dull. I was just simply born this way.”

Softpaw ducked his head in embarrassment at being caught looking, but he soon perked up at her amused tone. She'd been born with it? And I thought I had it bad. His front paws shifted at the thought. "Has, uh... NightClan been good to you?" he asked with an air of caution. He wasn't sure how to phrase what he wanted to say, but he had to try. He wasn't sure if this warrior was originally from the clan or not, but any cat with scars like hers might suffer from discrimination or other hardships. And even though he may seem rude for asking, he needed to know. "I know some cats can be awful to those like..." He trailed off, leaving the word "us" unsaid. If she was unaware of his background, he didn't want to ruin this conversation by bringing it up now.

Raveneye pondered the question he posed for a moment. Her reception to Nightclan was not the warmest or most joyful. She was brought in as a prisoner and then was trusted enough to become a warrior, but others still avoid her and act like she is still an outsider. "Honestly. Nightclan has been fair in their treatment of me thus far. I was brought to camp as a prisoner before being promoted to warrior and given the name Raveneye. Before that, I was just known as Raven. They have given me a home and I am sure with time it will come to feel that way. For now, others avoid me and I walk alone." she responded, curling her tail over her paws almost as a reflexive gesture to ensure the walls she created still remain intact. "I would not say they have been awful. Though some of these scars are not just from rouges and others who wander." A thin smile curled across her face as she spoke.

He sat down with sagging shoulders and flattened ears. He was happy to hear that she was being treated fairly--or as fairly as a former prisoner could expect. Softpaw knew NightClan wasn't the kindest with outsiders or any cat with physical weaknesses. He supposed that every cat's opinion on the matter may vary though, and he had been unlucky in finding someone outside of the majority. "It's good that you passed your initiation then. And yeah, time will probably help. Once you've shown your skills and contributed to the clan for a while, things could get better," he said without really meaning it. He hoped he was right. Even if things never got better for him, maybe it would be different for her.

Raveneye noticed as the apprentince's posture changed into a sullen and downcast nature. "Yes. I am sure it will, but I shall not hold out any hope." she mused, her blue eye calculating his posture. "The same cannot be said for you I assume?" The dark she-cat hated to think that the apprentice had been mistreated based on his background or disabilities. From what she has learned, is that honorable cats can come from many different places and have many different forms. The tom that raised her when she was abandoned by her mother was a runaway kittypet. He taught her a great deal and she might not have survived if it was not for him.

Startled that the warrior had guessed he was struggling, Softpaw's breath caught in his throat. "I- I mean-" he stammered. He didn't like to talk about his wellbeing or his past, and he rarely ever talked to anyone at all. However, looking at the she-cat and her scars, Softpaw decided it couldn't hurt to open up. "You could say that." Wide eyes burned into hers for a moment, and then he scowled down at his paws.
"I used to be a kittypet and well, that's not the worst of it." Slowly, he raised one paw between them and stretched his toes out as much as possible. "I don't have any front claws." The apprentice allowed her to look briefly and then he settled his paw on the ground again. He'd yet to meet her eyes and was hesitant to do so even now. He didn't want to see any disgust on her face. "I'll understand if you don't want to be around someone like me," he whispered.

An understanding smile came across her face as the apprentice spoke of his past. Gazing curiously at his paws, she took note that it appears the same thing that happened to Midnight, the cat who raised her, had also happened to him. She could hear how hard it was for him to talk of what happened and did not frown or show any judgement. "Ah, I see. I have noticed that many tend to look down upon and belittle those who were once kittypets." she responded, her voice gentle and kind. "I was abandoned at birth by my mother because of my blindness and the one who raised me was a kittypet himself. He had the same affliction you seem to have, but he learned and taught himself to survive on his own. You are not useless or worth any less than warriors just because you have no front claws. You are just as capable and fierce." she spoke with conviction and a bright smile. "Truth be told, I enjoy having your company."

Grey eyes flitted up to meet Raveneye's gaze and Softpaw was surprised to see her expression unchanged. His heart went out to her as the warrior described her own upbringing. How could any mother abandon their kit over something they couldn't help? And the cat that raised her was declawed too? it hadn't even occurred to him that other kittypets had gone through that awful process. Even though he couldn't see how he could be worth anything in NightClan, he appreciated her saying it. No one had ever said anything nice to him before. "Thank you," he said, smiling and blinking away the water in his eyes. "I like having you around too." Then, when it became too much for him, the apprentice rubbed his eyes with his paws. "Oh! My name's Softpaw by the way." How could he have forgotten to introduce himself!?

Her bright smile remained as the apprentice introduced himself. “It’s a pleasure to meet you Softpaw. I am Raveneye.” she responded. Raveneye is aware that she mentioned her name before, but did not actually introduce herself either. “I assume you’ve been training for quite a while and I apologize for keeping you from your rest.” The she-cat was not exactly sure what he had previous been up to, but she had seen him slip through the camp entrance for a brief moment before he stumbled into her. Though, looking back she did not mind. Softpaw was a pleasant conversationalist.

"Oh, yeah..." Softpaw trailed off, feeling a bit dejected. The first time he'd had a decent conversation with another cat, and it was ending so soon? That figured. "I was training, but you don't have to apologize or anything. I never really know what to do with my free time and well, I'm not ready to sleep just yet." He didn't think he'd be able to sleep well after this. So much happiness swirling around would keep him up all through the day for sure. "What about you? Are you off to patrol or something?" he asked with a curious tilt of his head.

Raveneye shook her head in answer to Softpaw's question. "I had just exited the warrior's cavern and was trying to decide on what to do. I thought it'd be best for me to explore the territory and became more familiar with it." She responded, tilting her head as well, slightly to the right in thought. Maybe having someone leading her would be more beneficial. The dark she-cat was concerned she would not be able to find her way back on her own. "Do you know the territory well? If so, would you mind showing me around? I haven't left the camp since I was brought was brought in as a prisoner."

Softpaw lit up at her question. He hadn't been an apprentice very long, but among his first lessons was territory familiarization. He could at least show her major landmarks and borders if nothing else. He puffed out his chest with enthusiastic pride at being able to help Raveneye in any way. "I know enough to show you around," he said with his head bobbing along. Standing up, he turned towards the camp's entrance. "If you're ready we can head out now."

Raveneye smiled as she stood and followed Softpaw to the camp entrance. Amusement flickered through at the sight of the apprentice excited to show her around. Anyone else would have found it dull and tedious to led her through Nightclan's territory, but she enjoyed the fact that he took pride in being able to help her. "Of course. There is no time like the present. Lead the way." She replied as the amusement filtered into her voice.

"I like that! There's no time like the present," he said in a singsong voice, walking over to the camp entrance. The way there, he stayed in the shadows. He still didn't like the feeling of eyes on him, and he wasn't sure how his clanmates would feel about him taking Raveneye into the territory for the first time. Stepping through the hole in the cavern, he stopped for a moment on the cliff face. Beneath the edge was a pool of water with a winding path surrounding it. "That's the Cenote. It used to be entirely underground, but an earthquake opened the land above it," Softpaw recited what his mentor, Beetleflight had told him. "Pretty cool, right?"

Raveneye was close behind the apprentice as the exited the camp and huffed a small laugh at his tone of voice. Her ice blue eye scanned around to make sure the weren’t followed by an unsavory warrior or apprentice. When they reached the cliff face, a look of awe came over her. She never noticed this before and it was a sight see. The pool looked like glass, reflecting the night sky and stars. “It’s quite beautiful.” she said in agreement. “I can’t believe an earthquake created something this stunning.”

Softpaw looked back at the water and noticed the reflection of the starlit sky too. It really was beautiful, but he knew there were cooler things to see. "NightClan is full of natural wonders like this, it's crazy!" he exclaimed, remembering his favorite spots from his own first tour. "I can't wait to show you them!" Then, he took off running along the high ground. The rocky surface quickly switched to grass under his paws as he led with his nose in the air, following old scents to reach their next stop.
