Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
(This is a training thread for apprentices a part of the Stormcrow Battalion only)
DayClan's land was as sacred as it was enchanting to witness. From the smells that made any cat, even foreign feel like they were home to the lush lands that could go on for miles surrounding them in every direction. They were like no other clan out there and for that reason they handled things a bit differently than most clans would. In DayClan there were wolf packs, bears, cougars, and more deadly foes, but instead of cowering or attempting the impossible task of driving them out they coexisted. Today it was up to the Stormcrow Battalion to find a way to lure the friendly farm dogs into Sweet Sable Woods. Sweet Sable Woods had an increase of foxes, they were attacking DayClan patrols, but the farm dogs had always been protective of DayClan so the theory was to have one big beast fight another. Leading the Battalion was Goldenphantom.

Foxes.
Of course, Goldenphantom was used to the constant presence of the other predators in the area. But foxes... were the one thing she couldn't stand. Those yellow eyes had burned a spot in her mind. Even as the new Battalion commander, her heart skipped a beat when Glowstar told her the situation. Getting the dogs over to the Sweet Sable Woods would be difficult, and initially she offered to take the mission solo. Till it was seen as a perfect training opportunity for her apprentices. Which was how she ended up with numerous little paws following her to the farm as she thought out loud. "No Animal Whisperers, so we can't just ask. We'll have to lure them over, but I doubt any of us could outrun them. Maybe food really is our best bet."
Sootpaw followed the Battalion commander closely, ignoring the other apprentices. She was aware that they would have to work together, but her defensive nature already had her on edge. What if they didn't work well together? The black she-cat knew her personality got in the way of friendships, but she was a little concerned it could mess up this mission.
She listened as Goldenphantom mulled over an idea as they headed for the farm and spoke up only when nobody else had said anything.
"What kind of food could we use? Do we need to hunt something?" Sootpaw flicked her tail at the thought. She loved the power she felt when she successfully hunted prey, and if that was all she had to do for this mission, perhaps she had been completely foolish to waste her time worrying. Sootpaw wasn't afraid of anything, and the fact that she had temporarily been nervous was embarrassing.
Sootpaw's brother, Smokepaw, walked in the back of the group. He was uncomfortable with the situation because he was so desperately afraid of fighting. Getting killed by a fox was so his luck. As they walked, he halfheartedly perked an ear to catch the conversation up front. The black and white tom was dragging his feet, and every step leading him away from the safety of the camp was painful. He remained quiet, having nothing to add. Known for being a scaredy-cat, he could only imagine how much of an inconvenience the others believed he was on this mission.

"Potentially, but I'm not sure they would follow a string of already dead prey." Goldenphantom pondered, not acknowledging Sootpaw as they got closer to the farm. A bit too absorbed in how she and her four apprentices were going to do this. Not that she intended to incite fear into them, she wouldn't let a hair on them get touched. But just the idea of foxes got her anxious. "Live prey, maybe. But it'd need to be something big to get the pack to follow it. Hmmm, that won't work. But, the dogs are already protective, so we just need a way to indicate there's a problem." At that, a harsh breeze blew past them. And as Goldenphantom opened her mouth to smell it, an idea practically slammed into her.
"If we can bring the smell of the foxes to the dogs, they might react instinctively and go there themselves. The wind is in our favor but it's not that strong today. It's still a good distance, but maybe we can meet them halfway." But, if she wanted to do both, it would involve them splitting up. And, while the dogs were generally friendly, she couldn't take the risk of anything going wrong.
Sootpaw nodded along. What her mentor was saying made sense, so she kept quiet, listening for Goldenphantom's decision. Suddenly, Sootpaw got a big whiff of a strange scent she didn't recognize and Goldenphantom seemed to immediately form an idea. Foxes. "How will we get the fox smell to the dogs?" she asked. She had never seen a fox before, let alone hunted one and dragged its body to a dog pack. Smokepaw remained silent as always, following along at a respectful distance.
ooc; FaithSpot (you guys have stormcrow apprentices right?)

(rip lostpaw, but at least it's easy to know where fairytalekit and princekit are gonna end up xD)
"There's no way we can drag a fox here, killing the fox is t-too risky as well." Goldenphantom bit her tongue at the stutter. For as much as things changed, they also tended to stay the same. But there was no way she was letting Sootpaw, Smokepaw or Eveningpaw near a fox. If she could at least prevent that trauma for them, she'd be happy. "But, if we can find something with the fox's scent and bring it to the dogs, they might instinctually go after it." She wasn't the most confident, but it was a better plan than having the dogs chase them or something else that could end fatally. That and it might have the spice of adventure apprentices craved. "We'll give it a try. And if it doesn't work, we have a little time to figure out a Plan B."
"I don't see why the animal whisperers couldn't do this. Why weren't they chosen for this task?" Eveningpaw spoke up, not looking forward to facing Foxes or dogs. Her older sister, Buttercuppaw was an animal whisperer. She could handle this situation.

Why weren't the animal whisperers chosen? It wasn't a question she could brush off easily, especially since a majority of the Animal Whisperers were predator experts. But did that include dogs? Most of them were still apprentice age too, but even having at least one of them along would have been helpful. More likely than not, Glowstar didn't even consider the Animal Whisperers. "Well, it's hard to say without Glowstar or Lioningsnarl around. Maybe they're not in that place in their training? I'm not sure. We can try this today and if we fail, we can get one of the Animal Whisperers to help. Sound good, Eveningpaw?"

She really hadn't been paying attention, huh? Well, Goldenphantom didn't mind too much, her fuse on the longer side as the group entered the forest. "Well, dogs primarily follow their noses, right? So, if we introduce the fox scent to them, there's a chance the dogs will pick up on it and follow it and hopefully solve our fox problem. So, we gotta go find a source of the scent to bring back." She explained as each step brought them closer to the foxes as they went deeper into the Sweet Sable Woods. The rest of their journey fell into silence until the scent was almost too strong to bear. Golden and white ears swiveling in each direction, her pace slowed. "Keep alert, and don't be afraid to climb a tree if you feel the need." She was very much tempted by her own advice but pressed on shaky paws. Finally, she signaled them all to crouch as she peered through a bush. A family of foxes had taken home in this grove, all fast asleep in the afternoon sun. There had to be something, and she scanned the area till she spotted a well-eaten rabbit corpse that had been cast off to the side. "That might work."
Eveningpaw had brought up a good point. An animal whisperer would have been much better for this job. Still, Sootpaw was fearless and ready to try this task. Smokepaw on the other hand was shaking heavily and taking slow, hesitant steps forward. As they walked, the scent became unbearably strong and Sootpaw kept her expression stoic while Smokepaw twisted up his nose in disgust. The apprentices saw the rabbit corpse that Goldenphantom was looking at, and Sootpaw moved closer to her mentor's side. "Shall I run in and grab it? I'm not afraid."
"Good idea, Goldenphantom." She responded in a hushed voice as they crouched in the bush. Her ear twitched when Sootpaw offered to rush in to grab the rabbit. "I don't think you should just rush in like that. They could spot you or even scent you before you could make it back to us and they are really fast. And climbing a tree with a corpse in your mouth isn't easy. We should create a diversion. Get the fox's attention away from the rabbit corpse while someone grabs it."

She listened to each, finally letting her gaze drop from the foxes when they were done. Good. They hadn't been found yet. Goldenphantom felt bile in the back of her throat, a desire to gag on the offensive smell close to taking over. But she held back. "I appreciate the offer Sootpaw, but Eveningpaw is right." She looked to each apprentice quickly. "It'd be hard for me to carry that corpse up a tree, let alone one of you." Her tail rested briefly on Sootpaw's shoulders, hoping it gave some comfort despite her words. "You could sneak in, but then you could get caught. So I think Eveningpaw's idea of a distraction is good. So how about Sootpaw stays here and will grab the rabbit while the rest of us make a distraction?"
At first her fur prickled at her idea being shot down, and the defensive she-cat opened her mouth for a rude retort right as Goldenphantom's tail touched her shoulders. Sootpaw relaxed a bit and held back, Sootpaw nodded along. She was itching for action, but the apprentice wasn't stupid. She knew when to be patient. "Alright," she agreed, following along with the new plan already in her head. "I'll do my best." She settled down and waited to hear what the distraction would be.

"Great. Thank you." Goldenphantom purred before turning towards the other 2 apprentices. Eveningpaw who's idea this was and Smokepaw who had barely said a word since they started. The distraction was good, but she still needed to ensure their safety. A couple ideas floated around her mind before she came back down to earth. "Do either of you have any ideas for a distraction we can use?"
At this point, Smokepaw was shaking so badly he could imagine some of his looser hairs were flying off with every violent shiver. The tom shook his head vehemently and tried to speak but the words were hard to decipher. "I - Igottagetouttahere!" With that, he turned quickly and ran off in a blur of black and white. After a moment the apprentice was gone. Sootpaw sighed at her brother's cowardice. Goldenphantom or Glowstar should have known better than to send him on a mission.
