Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The cycle of day and night was a continuous part of life, but for one cat only night truly mattered, when the world is shrouded in darkness with only the moon and stars to light your way. That was when Howlingwolf truly felt himself. The thin furred tom had not always been so unwelcoming of the suns light, but as he grew older all of that changed, now the darkness and shadows were his friends. A means to hide himself from the eyes of those around, watching him as they always did, sneering and laughing as he had grown accustomed to them doing. Today had been no different for the unusual looking feline, hiding away as best he could until at last darkness blanketed the earth. He had slipped out of camp as many of his clanmates began to settle in hopes of getting a moment to relax without the constant fear of being confronted, perhaps tonight would be one of those nights, or perhaps his hope of being alone would be stripped from him.
(Just saying, but Moon cats are nocturnal boy and girls)
"Where are you headed off to," a voice questioned from the shadows, moonlight reflecting off of amber eyes. "Although we are cats of the night, that does not mean you should go off alone, Howlingwolf." Stepping out from the darkness, Silverstar revealed himself. It was a good night to be out, not too cool, not too windy - a good balance of both as things should be. "So I thought I thought I might tag along," he added.
(I should have known that, it makes sense that they would be.)
Howlingwolf paused as the all to familiar voice of his leader reached his ears, he lowered his paw and turned to face the silver tom with a rather un-enthused look on his face. "I suppose I don't have a choice, so I wont argue." He was not pleased with having company, but Silverstar was his leader and above everyone else in Moonclan Howlingwolf did respect him.
He frowned, a bit disappointed. "You don't sound to excited about me inviting myself," he commented. "Besides, I was already out, but came across you. Look, if you were looking to have some alone time, I can leave you to it." he suggested. Silverstar wasnt the one to be imposing on his clanmates and respected their wishes. "Its your decision."
Howlingwolf sighed internally at the leaders frown, Silverstar had never treated him like some of the others did so he had no real reason act this way towards him. "I don't mind, besides you're right that it wouldnt be safe to go alone." It was strange speaking so much to someone else, but if it was to be anyone he was glad it had at least been Silverstar.
"Are you sure?" he asked. Howlingwolf always seemed a little standoffish to Silverstar but he would always dismiss it. For some reason he wondered if he would ever decide to leave the clan to go on his own path. Of course, he couldn't, and wouldnt, allow it, the thought always crossed the leader's mind. "Where were you off to, if I may ask."
Howlingwolf nodded to Silverstar in reply and began to walk once more, leaving the leader to follow as he made his way to his destination. "Hm? Oh, the lake." More times than not the lake is where the reserved tom could be found, he often sat at its edge, though never close enough that he could see himself in its reflection.
"Hmm, interesting choice," he responded as he caught up to the tom. "But why the lake? There are so many other places to go for solitude." I'd know from experience. Leaves and twigs broke away under their paws as they carried on to their destination, the moon high.
He kept his eyes forward, focused on the path he walked as he thought of how to answer Silverstars question. "It's complicated." He replied in short, how could he explain that he chose the lake over and over again. A place where reflections could be seen, but where he had never seen his own... He never moved close enough to the water so that he could look upon himself, he knew what he looked like and could not bare the thought that he may look at himself the way others did. Howlingwolf shook his head and turned his head to look at the leader over his shoulder for a brief moment, opening his mouth to speak before quickly shutting it and turning away again.
The silver tom frowned. It must be a sensitive subject if that was his response. Not knowing what to say, Silverstar chose to continue walking in silence.
He should have been enjoying the silence, it was what he wanted wasn't it? As the lake came into view Howlingwolf slowed his pace, stopping just short of the waters edge before sitting down and turning to Silverstar. "I've only ever seen the reflection of the sky in the lake." He admitted to the tom, although he wasn't sure if he would understand, he felt the need to say it.
Silverstar took a seat next to him. "And why is that?" he questioned. Admittedly, he didn't expect that response. Whenever he was near anything that would show him his own reflection, he couldnt help but look at it and think about what hes done and how he got there. "Are you...embarrassed, er, rather, uncomfortable with how you look?"
He flicked the tip of his tail at Silverstars question, he eyes returning to the lakes surface which was now glowing from the moons reflection. "You aren't serious are you?" The tom huffed and lowered his head slightly. "You see the way that I look, and I am not blind to it either, or to the way the others look at me." Howlingwolf had never spoken to anyone about this, mainly because there was no one he could talk to. "Its because of this that my parents shunned me, the reason I only receive disgusted looks from my clanmates." There was anger in his voice, and if you listened hard enough you could hear sadness in it as well.
His frown grew. He never knew about this. Assuming that everyone got along was a fatal flaw of his and he knew it. Silverstar failed. For a moment, he sat in silence, not knowing what to say next without saying hurting words. "I never knew that." he said finally "I can understand it must have been rough for you growing up and even now, but you shouldnt let that get to you " You are a fine addition to the clan," he said reassuringly. "Dont let anyone tell you otherwise."
Howlingwolf took in each word the leader said and although grateful for the kind words and encouragement, he knew it would not be that easy for him. The tom had lost his optimism long ago and as time further went on had begun to build the walls now now stand tall surrounding his heart and emotions. "You are a good leader, Silverstar. Thank you." He looked at the tom and slowly his mouth curved up into an unsteady smile, vanishing only moment later.
"I wouldn't say that," he responded with a slight chuckle, "I'm still new to this whole leadership thing." His drifted up toward the moon that hung high. "But, it would appear that the Moon Goddess sees something in me that makes me worthy of such a task. As time goes on, I can only get better, as with yourself." He brought his attention back to Howlingwolf. "I've been meaning to ask you this, though, have you considered talking to some of your clanmates?"
"That's exactly what makes you such a good choice, you know you still have room to grow into it instead of just seeing yourself as already perfect." Howlingwolfs eyes met his, he truly did believe that Silverstar was a good leader, this encounter in itself was part of that. "I have, but that doesn't mean I will, even if I did I'm not ready." He looked back at the lake, he couldn't confrot his clanmates when he couldn't even confront himself.
Silverstar was grateful for the compliment but his joy was short lived. "Hmm...well let's work on that," he offered, "What is it thats currently holding you back from doing such a thing?" he questioned. He couldn't have any one of his clan members feel estranged and outcasted. It hurt him personally.
The fact that Silverstar did not know of his treatment didn't bother the tom, the looks he received and the comments overheard when in passing, it was old news. He could remember his knighthood well, then it seemed that nothing, not the words or the disgusted looks could phase him but as he grew that changed and now he wasn't sure if he wanted to change things. The pain within him ran deep, and he had grown accustomed to avoiding those around him so much so that he was now more comfortable alone.
"If I were to work on it, not that I'm saying I will, I suppose first I would need to work on myself." He let his strange gaze look to the lake, the water was still and the night sky was shining brightly against it.
He nodded silently. "Yes. That would be a good starting point," he added. "Change must come from within, Howlingwolf, and once you have accepted yourself, no one else's opinions will matter." He shook his head slightly, the words he just spoke haunting him. That wasnt right.
