Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Foxsnarl purred, making a mental note to talk to her as soon as possible. He led Sunpaw down toward the meadow further, enjoying the warm sunshine that had come to bathe their pelts. "Do you know much about herbs yet? I can help point out the ones to gather, but it'll be easier if you already know."
"Ah... let's see." He wasn't very good with the names, so it took him a moment of pause each time he came up with them. "Goldernrod, daisy, I think some comfrey... I'm not sure what grows where we're headed, I'll have to look," he finally answered, evasive. He would recognize them at the very least.
Foxsnarl was a little embarrassed at his own failure, and simply nodded. He picked up the pace a little so they could move on from that and start looking for herbs already. "We can do some hunting as well, but first let's get the herbs. It'll be easier that way."
Stopping, nose atwitch, Sunpaw sniffed at a plant in a sunny area that had small, thick leaves and a fresh scent. "I saw Graythorn bringing this back to camp once, but I never found out exactly what it was..." she mewed, a hint of frustration in her voice.
"Might as well grab some, then," her mentor told her. "If you know for sure it's an herb, then he'll probably appreciate more of it." He eyed the herb, but he couldn't think of a name for it, so he gave up. That wasn't his strong suit.
Foxsnarl moved on, toward the further edge of the meadow. He still had other business he wanted to attend to, but first he needed to get her started. "Alright, see that there? The tall red flowers? That's poppy. The seeds are good for pain." That the warrior remembered: he'd had to take plenty of the painkiller before.
While she gathered some he continued along to seek out some more. There was a few patches of a low-lying purple plant he remembered well, but he struggled with the name. Was this borage or burdock? Comfrey? It was beyond him, but he knew it was useful. He sat down to wait for her to rejoin him. "Here's some more to gather."
"Gather some of this as well. Not too much - remember we have to carry it back. Then give your hunting skills a whirl and try and decide if there's any prey nearby. You don't need to hunt it yet, but keep your eyes open. I'll be right back," Foxsnarl told her as he rose to his paws, checking to make sure his instructions were clear before he left.
Sunpaw finished gathering an appropriate amount before putting it down for a moment. Closing her eyes, she cast her senses outward, moving them from the wind in the ferns beside her, to the song of what few birds remained this time of year. After a few seconds and a couple redirections of attention, she picked up on a russle of movement a few fox lengths behind her.
Foxsnarl left on his own, heading quickly for the edge of the meadow. He passed it and jogged across the border to meander down the side of the hill to a familiar-looking den. His coat prickled with anticipation as he grew near, parting his maw to taste the air as he cautiously sidled closer. He couldn't taste cat scent, confirming that the enemy had indeed left... but the camp wasn't abandoned, either. The scent of a fox that had moved in was strong, and he backed up with a low growl rumbling in his throat. The fox wasn't there, but it could return soon, and follow his scent. He had to get his apprentice away from there.
Turning around, the senior warrior hurried back up the hills toward Sunpaw. "Sunpaw! Are you ready to go?" he hissed urgently as he drew near.
"Gather up those herbs, and then let's head out. You lead the way," he ordered. He hovered over her. If she couldn't take all of the herbs, he'd pick some up.
He checked the air and was relieved that he didn't scent the predator nearby. With any luck, they wouldn't run into it on the way out, and his apprentice would be safe. Foxsnarl scooped up the remaining herbs in his jaw and darted after Sunpaw.
