Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
After everything that happened in his life recently, it felt like he was reaching a breaking point. He needed to escape.
The sun was rising late that morning. He had already been up for several hours, and when the light finally reached the camp, it fell across his hunched gingers shoulders as the senior warrior waited for it to finally rise. Finally, though, it was late enough for their day to begin. Foxsnarl turned and slipped into the apprentice's den, crowding into the cramped den, then reaching down and gently nudging Sunpaw. "Time to get up. We've got a long day ahead of us," he told his apprentice. "If she doesn't wake up soon, come tell me," he instructed one of the other apprentices in the den, then retreated to wait in the camp for her to join him.
Waking with a start, Sunpaw found herself nearly trembling with excitement. She hastily gave her ruffled pelt a few licks before dashing out after her mentor. She came to a screeching halt by his side. "I'm ready!" she mews a little too loud considering the early hour.
He was surprised to see her up so quickly, but pleased. "Good. Let's get going; we can find something to eat along the way if you get hungry," the senior warrior instructed as he led her from the camp. There was a slight chill in the air and a thin fog hung over the surface of the land, but with the sun rising, it would all soon burn away. Still, his short fur was ruffled as he stepped out of the camp. "Let's head for higher ground and see if we can get out of the shadows to warm up some."
Foxsnarl considered. "It is. For the most part they're fairly similar, and if you forget, you can use a rabbit-stance to stalk a mouse... but the difference is mostly in how you stalk. Which direction you come from, at what speed, and how you place your paws. Hunting is more precise than it usually looks, and there's a reason most cats excel at catching one type of prey but not another," he explained.
They were reaching the switchback at the top of the hill close to camp. The sandy path beneath their paws widened as it dumped them at the crest of the hill, where grasses had more freely grown over it - the pathway to the top was mostly free of grasses because of the constant beat of paws on the well-traveled ground. Foxsnarl shook out his fur as they stopped and overlooked the territory spreading over them.
"Look, you can see a patrol from her. Is that Hawkcreek?" Foxsnarl pointed out a trio of warriors crossing the stepping stones as they headed for the FallClan border. Hawkcreek, a light brown tabby, lost his balance and tumbled into the water.
"They'll be fine. It hasn't rained much, so the river won't be too hard to swim through... though it will be cold." Foxsnarl watched as the patrol stopped. Hawkcreek was washing downstream as he tumbled through the water, but finally righted himself and struck out strongly for the bank. As the water grew more shallow, he pulled himself over the rocks then collapsed on the bank, panting and shivering.
Sunpaw let out a sigh of relief. "That's good to hear..." she mewed. She then shook herself and looked at her mentor. "Say, I was so excited earlier, I forgot to ask what we were doing."
Foxsnarl was so distracted by watching the scene below, he had forgotten they came up here to train. "Oh, right," he meowed, shaking his head once as he turned back to face her. "We're in for a long one today, if you're up for it. Just doing some hunting, maybe picking a few herbs for Graythorn if we come across them. We'll be hunting a little further than you're used to going, though." He spoke in a mild, relaxed tone, but it was too casual. The senior warrior was up to something, but he didn't want to admit it outright - it was potentially dangerous, after all. He was planning on checking on an old den some of their enemies used to hide in, and while he was counting on slipping away while she was hunting and checking it out alone, if there was anything living in the den it could be a danger to both of them.
Sunpaw looked thoughtful for a moment, but agreed in the affirmative, mewing "Absolutely! I don't recognize as many herbs as I'd like, but I've seen marigold, thyme, catmint, and aloe."
"Great. I can point some others out to you too," he promised. Foxsnarl didn't know much about using herbs, but he'd seen them enough to know which ones were useful so they could be brought back to camp. "Let's get going. We're going over there, by that field." He pointed to it with his tail, off in the distance.
The ginger tom led the way back down the hill on the other side. He kept them going slowly, pointing out where the rock was loose, then sped up once they were on flatter ground. "So, Sunpaw, tell me about yourself," he prompted. "Do you have any siblings, or friends so far?"
Sunpaw gazed up at the sunlight filtering down through the branches, her blue eyes thoughtfull. Graythorn's been really nice and is really smart, and Lionesspaw is so amazing! And you're so patient with me..." she trailed off, seeming to realized she was babbling.
He listened carefully, glad to hear she had been getting to know everyone. Foxsnarl had always been an outgoing cat, but as an apprentice he'd been even more hotheaded and arrogant than he was now, and he had struggled to make friends that could tolerate his extreme personality. "Good, good. Maybe next time we do battle training Lionesspaw can come along to help out," he suggested.
"Certainly. It's good to practice against someone your age; I'll talk to Destiny about it." He was confident the older she-cat would listen to him. Besides, it would be good to make sure Sunpaw made some friends and felt more involved in the clan. "In a few moons, you can come to the gathering as well, and meet the other clans. It'll be crowded, but it's a valuable time to learn about the other clans."
