Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
He didn't feel ready to take on an apprentice, but he supposed it was time to face the harsh truth. Brightpaw was gone. She had began her training at the same time as Turbulentpaw, but the bubbly she-cat had disappeared. They had seen no signs of her in moons, and the timing couldn't have been much worse. The clan needed their medicine cats more than ever after the earthquake, and it had fallen upon his tiny shoulders.
His own mentors had done their best to help, but they had their own duties to attend to. Now with his leg injured during a fall, he needed an extra set of paws more than ever. The question of what would happen if he had died that day had plauged him, so he had asked Bleakwind to come and assist him in picking out a few canidates from amoungst the clan's kits and apprentices . He would be promoted during the next ceremony, and would also need to make his choice by then.
In a rouse to see who might make a good choice, they had organized to have several of the young cats whom had shown interest in medicine and healing to come help him and Bleakwind do some herb organization and sorting. The herbs that he had set out were rather harmless, just in case a curious kit decided to take a little nibble. Those that seemed to excel or express a great deal of enthusiasm would move forwards to help him heal some more of the more minor injuries that had occurred in the past few days. It would help him gain a sense of their bedside manner, knack for picking up things quickly, and how they did under pressure.
The thin tom lowered himself gently onto a thick bed of moss near all the herbs so that he could easily see what all the kits were doing, without having to keep standing on his injured leg. He smiled upwards at Bleackwind "I'm curious to see how many young cats will be interested"
Bleakwind nodded as he sat down next to Turbulentpaw. He'd admittedly always dreamed of being a medicine cat, but the stars hadn't aligned for him. StarClan had instead tasked him with teaching Turbulentpaw and helping him instead.
He didn't mind too much, it kept him close to his ancestors which he appreciated. He was keen to see which young cats would be drawn in by the mysteries of StarClan and would take to healing like most cats took to hunting.
"I am hopeful we'll get several," He meowed. "We have plenty of young cats with open minds we can help show the ways of healing and StarClan."
Honestly becoming a medicine cat was never something that Turbulentpaw had sought after, but after starting on this path each step that he had taken just seemed to make him feel more confident that this had been the correct choice. He had wanted to become a hero, and in some ways he felt like he had succeeded. The cats of NightClan no longer saw him as an outsider, instead accepting him the way he was. Some even saw him as wise, and as someone to look up to.
He only hoped that the right canidate would come today to show themselves. Of course he would naturally consult StarClan about his choice. Perhaps they would disagree with him, but then again perhaps they would just confirm that what he was doing was right. It was hard to predict.
He nodded his head in agrement to Bleakwind "I'm hopeful as well"

Nerves shot through her small body as she made her way to where the medicine cat was waiting for the young cats who would choose to test their faith and set their destiny in the ways of healing, this path would bring whichever cat chosen into a closer relationship with their warrior ancestors and lead them in a directions very few cats were allowed to travel. Her deep blue eyes held determination as each small step she took carried her closer to her dream, the scent of herbs began to float around her pushing her fears away and clearing her mind.
Turbulentpaw came into view with Bleakwind sitting beside him, both cats waiting patiently to see who would appear for the test. The young she-cats heart skipped a beat at the sight of them both confident with a calm superior air around them, she swallowed the lump in her throat and padded forward until she stood before the two cats and the line of fragrant leaves and herbs neatly lined in front of them and now her. Her inquisitive gaze dropped to the herbs their scents mixing together but still distinct enough for her to tell which smell was radiating from which plant, quickly realizing she had not yet spoken to the cats who were waiting she lifted her eyes and gave her head a small dip. "Hello, I'm Littlekit." Her voice was small but strong and held no nervousness only a tinge of excitement and respect.

The argument between her parents rang in her ears still. She recalled her father entering the den, addressing the matter about Turbulentpaw calling together the clan's youth to seek their interests. It was a harmless suggestion, giving a shrug of his shoulders and telling the small litter that it might just be something they would have fun doing. Of course, it didn't mean it was something they were going to be doing forever if they disliked it. There was nothing wrong with trying something new. Her brothers didn't seem too convinced. After all, herbs smelled gross. They would rather be off rolling around in the elder's nests and listening to stories, or set a pretend attack on the other kits. Twighlightkit however, perked her ears to the sound of it. New things had excited her while at the same time made her nervous. But then her mother lowered herself to tell her in a soft, yet annoyed voice that practicing medicine wasn't something a young and beautiful future queen should be interested in. Her father had quite the response to that, and it wasn't something she would repeat while StarClan was watching.
So now, here she was. The silver striped kit approached with itching paws. A sense of panic spread through her, a tingling from ears to tail as she saw the two older cats come into view, and then her eyes caught another smaller figure. Twightlightkit let out a soft sigh of relief, feeling instantly comforted that she wasn't the only one who decided to do this. She stopped besides Littlekit, hearing her introduce herself. She was almost jealous by the way Littlekit seemed so confident. For her, it was normal to feel unsteady in situations where she felt she could be judged.
She cleared her throat and forced her golden eyes to meet Turbulentpaw's, and then Bleakwind's and straightened herself before taking a deep breath to meow, "and my name is Twighlightkit."

The soft sigh given by Twighlightkit had just barley reached the soft fur of her ears alerting her of the kits arrival followed by the warm of her body as she come forward and stood at her side, along with her own greeting the new arrival gave her own. Littlekit looked at Twighlightkit and smiled, her deep blue eyes glowing. She would have someone to compete with now, not chosen by default but able to earn it by proving herself and working hard.
Excitement bubbled through her small body and she nodded to the she-cat beside her. "Good luck, I know we will both do our best and I hope there wont be any hard feelings no matter who gets picked." Her voice was soft and laced with honesty, she knew she would not be angry if Twighlightkit were to be picked but that didn't mean she wouldn't do her absolute best to become Turbulentpaws apprentice. Littlekit wanted nothing more than she wanted this, she knew deep down she belong surrounded by herbs, helping her clan to survive not by fighting but by healing.
Apparently their ruse to make this just a simple sorting exercise had been seen straight through. They hadn't told any of the kits or apprentices that this was to begin looking for a new medicine cat apprentice, just that they had needed some extra paws sorting herbs with his leg being injured. He chuckled and shook his head slightly "Now girls, there is no reason to be competative. In the end StarClan will choose who will follow in my footsteps, even though I am thrilled that you are both interested in the position"
The two small kits both seemed to have competing fires flickering in their eyes. Most kits their age didn't like being any where near the medicine cat den, except for getting into trouble "With my recent injury, we could use a few extra set of paws organizing the herbs that I helped the warriors to gather. The decided to just leave them all in the mixed up pile and leave the rest to me" he replied with a little sigh, motioning towards that pile of mixed herbs. Sure it wasn't galmerous, but a lot about being a medicine cat wasn't. It was a lot grueling hours of doing tasks that others found boring. Would they be willing to put aside their personal feelings to help their clan?

Littlekit smiled as he explained to them that he needed help to sort the herbs the warriors had gathered and left in a jumbled pile, she could detect different scents coming from the plants but was having a difficult time separating each smell into it's own. "Why did they not keep them separated as they found them, wouldn't it have been much simpler that way?" Her curiousness was peeking through as she studied the pile and leaned forward to give it a sniff. "Someone should have stayed to help you. Oh, but then I wouldn't get to, I'll help but I don't know all of them exactly." She was eager but wasn't afraid to be truthful in not knowing all the herbs, though she wouldn't be expected to seeing as she was just a kit. Her paws moved about on the ground at the thought of getting to learn more about the very things that often filled her dreams at night. "I want to learn about all of them! Please!" She gazed at Tubulentpaw with wide eyes her dark orange and white furglowing against the light of the sun.
Bleakwind chuckled, "Well, then we'll go through the herbs really quick." He glanced towards Turbulentpaw before he went over to the pile and plucked up some marigold laying it out for them to see. "This is marigold." He told the two kits. "You use this to stop infections, and help alleviate some inflamation. It also can be used for stiff joints, but if we're low on it we'll likely save it for infections." He meowed.
He set it in front of the kits before picking up some borage. "This here is borage, it's used to help queens when their milk won't come." He meowed, "Though it can also aide with fevers."

Littlekit listened carefully as Bleakwind began to explain the uses for the marigold and then the borage, she moved a little closer making sure not to block Twighlightkits and took in each of their scents and looked them over so she would be able to recognize them in the future. She turned her gaze back to the marigold and sat in thought for a moment before a flicker of excitement flashed in her eyes. "You can use marigold to help with chills too, right?" She had a faint memory of the smell coming from one of the apprentices who had been complaining of chills and returned from the medicine cats den with it lingering around him. She looked up at Bleakwind and Turbulentpaw as she waited hopeful for the answer to her question.

(Sorry about these slow replies. I am usually less active on weekends)
Twighlightkit parted her lips to reply to Littlekit, but the voice of Turbulentpaw washed over her and she instantly closed her jaws and perked up to listen. She was definitely hoping this would be more of a fun thing than a battle to the death to see who captured their interests. The kit seemed nice, so that helped to calm her nerves a bit. She just flashed her a smile and a nod that silently said "good luck," in return.
She moved smoothly around the piles, stepping delicately around herbs and taking in all the fresh scents and noting them by smell and appearance. When Bleakwind reached the borage, she focused on it's aroma, her eyes growing. "Oh, I remember that smell," she purred. "It's in the nursery a lot, I think." She knew her mother had to take it, more than once due to her not producing enough milk. She always complained about it, but luckily her kits were eating prey now. Twighlightkit felt a rush of excitement flood through her that made her fur prickle in a few places. She was beginning to learn new things, and she couldn't wait for more.
Bleakwind nodded looking pleased between the two young cats. Impressed by their astute observations. "You are both very observant! A trait that serves a healer well!" He noted. "And yes Littlekit, the marigold can help for chills."
He was very pleased with these two, in the back of his mind he made a note that whichever didn't get chosen he would request to Burningstar he mentor them. Though he'd wound up a warrior, he'd been invaluable as an aide and mentor figure to Turbulentpaw. He wanted to assure whichever one didn't get chosen by StarClan, that their knowledge was not gone to waste. And that there was still a path for them.
"Now next here we have this," He held up some catmint. "This is catmint, it's vital for treating greencough, and even some of the lesser coughs like white cough, but since greencough is such a threat during leafbare, we often reserve this for greencough."

Nodding her small ginger and white head she watched as Bleakwind pulled a third herb and set it in front of them, she opened her mouth as the tantalizing scent made her mouth water. The green leaves did not have smooth edges and the texture and pattern of them was unique from the other plants, the scent of it though was what put it in a class of its own. "So if a cat has whitecough instead of giving them this you would give them something else so it doesn't progress or get worse and if it did that's when you would use the catmint?" She was looking back and forth from Bleakwind to the fragrant green herb in front of them wondering what could be used in place of catmint for whitecough.
Her mind was whirling with everything she was taking in, this was the happiest she had ever been. It felt like a dream and she was scared she would wake up in her nest surrounded not by the mixture of so many herbs, sharp, tangy, sweet but instead by the warm milk scent of the nursery. Littlekit shook her head subtly and smiled as she remained where she was, she felt so comfortable here in this moment and she never wanted it to end.

She felt a bubble of pride swell in her chest at Bleakwind's compliment as she continued eyeing the herbs she had been introduced to first. The marigold sat in her vision for a moment and she turned her head up to him with curiosity burning in her gaze.
"So, you can use this to heal infections, but could you use it to keep the infection from even starting?" She sniffed. "Would it help Turbulentpaw?" Truthfully, she couldn't tell exactly what was wrong with the medicine cat's leg. It was tucked away, but the way he sat made it obvious he was in pain if he were to put too much pressure on it.
"Perhaps, but there are other herbs that would be more effective. Marigold stops infection, so applying it to a wound would kill infections as soon as it arises However it could still get infected, and would need to be applied multiple times. In a healthy warrior this wouldn't be much of an issue, but in a cat that has a supressed immune system, like a kit or elder, it is better to keep infection from ever appearing. Personally I prefer using Alder tree bark. It helps to soothe pain, as well as prevent further complications. Marigold would work in a pinch though, and is better than allowing a wound to fester" He flicked his tail over to some dried bark that had been gathered, avoiding using his front leg.

Littlepaw listened carefully to each word, her eyes glittered as she turned her head to look at the bark Turbulentpaw had motioned to and nodded. "Marigold and Alder tree bark." She repeated the items being sure to keep note of their appearances, she wanted to know them all. She would be able to bring them to the medicine cat in case he was running low. "Turbulentpaw, I have a question." She paused and looked at the tom. "Is there any way to help a cat who has been poisoned?" The words came out slow but she held her gaze to his, determined to know.
"Of course, but how to treat them depends largly on the what it was the poisoned them in the first place. Unfortunatley that is often the hardest part to figure out, and requires a bit of snooping to find out. Treating a cat that has been bitten by a snake is different that treating a cat that has eaten something poisonous." he paused, and smiled a little. Both of these cats were asking excellent questions, and he knew that he would have a difficult time deciding between the two.
"Generally if you suspect that a cat has eaten something, the first course of treatment is to try to get them to vomit that substance up. Once it is out of their stomach, it reduces how much poison is released into their system. But you must be careful, because making a cat vomit can be harmful as well. It will make them dehydrated and weak"
Looking as though she was deep in thought, her eyes drifted back to the herbs their blue depths glittering like sun on the water. You must know what has poisoned them to treat them properly, if not you could end up doing more damage. Her mind was racing with all of the possibilities. "Yarrow." She looked back at the medicine cat suddenly released from her thoughts. "It makes cats sick if they eat it." She had never eaten any but had found a leaf in the camp most likely dropped by a cat who had collected some to bring back, when she had shown it to her mother she told her not to chew on it because it would make her sick. She no longer had her mother here to help her now that she had passed away, but she would make her mom proud. She had to.

Twighlightkit's ears pricked. "Yarrow," she echoed. She recalled a couple moons ago, her brother dared another kit to eat an odd looking plant, and it made him throw up all the contents of his stomach. All she remembered after that was that he had to stay in his mother's nest for a while. She wasn't sure if that was what they were talking about, but it sounded close enough. She was a kit, after all. They weren't going to know much about medicine. "That would be really useful if you ate something bad… like crowfood, too."
Bleakwind was very impressed. These kits were quite intelligent. "That's right, Yarrow is a great way to help a cat purge whatever they ate that might be making them sick." Bleakwind said. "Though when they get bitten by something poisonous it gets complicated. Which is why in general it's advised to take care to avoid snakes. But snakes arent' the only ones with a nasty bite that can give issues. Rats also can give nasty bites that can cause infection if you're not careful. So not necessarily poisonous, some animals are not nearly as clean as us, so a bite from them could lead to trouble." He pulled out a burdock root. "When we're dealing with rat bites though, we first clean the wound, and if we know it's a rat we apply the burdock root to the bite right away to alleviate pain and lower the risk of infection." He set it down so the young kits could look at it more closely.
