Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Goldenpaw was up next. The she-cat letting out a breathe as she approached the herbs on slightly shaking paws. She couldn't fail. Her entire life had lead up to this point and if she failed now, she would never be able to face her adopted mother again. It was either come home with the title they trained their entire kithood for, or don't come home at all. her golden gaze traveled over the herbs. The pictures of each herb flashing in her memory from where she was showed them as a kit. The first plant was a bundle of what appeared to be giant leaves to the average eye. She bent down and inhaled the scent. The memory coming back clear. She remembered being sent out to collect the herb one time and when they came back with beech leaves by mistake their adopted mother had verbally abused them for it. She twitched her ear, making a mental note that this was dock leaf, before moving onto the next herb.
This herb was a lot more simpler. The small yellow flowers growing on abnormally long stems could be recognized by even the most unintelligent warrior. She narrowed her eyes at the plant for a moment, silently wondering if this one was a trick question, but as she tentatively scented the plant it was pretty obvious this plant was goldenrod. The most used herb to treat wounds. She shifted her body slightly in order to sit in front of the next herb.
Goldenpaw scrunched up her nose at this one. Garlic. Why did it have to be garlic? She thought bitterly. She didn't even need to sniff further to confirm it. She couldn't help but recall the time Silkenpaw... Silkenkit at the time... had rolled in a patch of it just to annoy the hell out of their adoptive mother. She had forced him to sleep outside and even when it started to rain, the scent obviously no longer clinging to his pelt after being drenched with water, she still wouldn't allow him back into the den as punishment for his actions. Goldenpaw had felt bad at the time as she watched her brother shiver while huddled under a few trees. Now though she realized that he had deserved it at the time.
She let out a sigh and moved onto the next herb. This one was also an obvious one. There wasn't that many blue berries that grew in the wild and could be used to soothe even the crankiest of cats. This one had a nice memory attached to it too. Her and Silkenpaw had become sick from prey that had become bad from sitting on the fresh kill too long. Her stomach had felt like it was on fire and she felt like she could barely move. Their adoptive mother had showed them love in this one. She had stroked their throats as she helped them swallow the berries after they slowly chewed them. They had helped tremendously with the pain.
She blinked her eyes and moved onto the next one. Moss? No. Moss wasn't a herb. She scrunched her face in confusion as she stared at the ball of moss hard. She bent over and inhaled the scent of it. She almost couldn't scent this one over the garlic that still lingered in her nostrils, but she almost wrenched as the the disgusting scent of the substance mixed with the scent of the garlic. What was that? It was like nothing she had ever smelled before and the confused expression melted away into one of pure disgust. This one wasn't one they had reviewed, at least not to her knowledge. Her heart sped up as she realized she might actually get this one wrong. The apprentice biting her lower lip as she tried to remain calm. No point worrying. Just move on. Figure it out later. Don't appear stupid in front of the others.
The next herb caused her rapidly beating heart to drop to the pit of her stomach. Her body trembling as every ounce of her wanted to turn tail and leave, but the idea of what her mother would do if she returned without the title caused her to stay still. This herb was one that she had almost used on her own brother. The memory she had tried to hide away now resurfacing. They had been tasked to find poppy seeds. Their mother had probably showed them the herb a thousand times, but somehow she had brought back foxglove seeds instead. Are you sure these are the right ones?
Goldenpaw didn't want to get in trouble, but part of her knew that it wasn't the correct herb. Nevertheless, she had insisted it was poppy seeds. Had even raised her voice at her adoptive mother when she continued to question her. She had told Goldenpaw and Silkenpaw to exchange the seeds and take them if we were sure we had the correct one. Her paw had shook as she pushed the seeds towards Silkenpaw. Her pride too large to admit she had been wrong. The tom bent down, his mouth opening to lap up the seeds, until their mother quickly stopped them. She took the seeds and pushed them out into the open, telling them to simply watch. A bird swooped down and pecked at Silkenpaw's pile of seeds then took flight unsteadily. Another bird swooped down and pecked at her pile. It only took one seed. The tiny creature screeched in agony, flapping around on the ground as if seizing, before eventually laying completely still. That was the first time Silkenpaw had been praised over her. That was the first time she had been forced to sleep outside. She realized now she had been looking at the seeds for far too long and those who were already done were simply staring at her. Her heart beat rapidly again in embarrassment as she pushed herself on shaky paws and took a seat next to Echopaw. Her body still shaking as she attempted to push the memory aside and calm herself down. She couldn't let the others see how upset she was.

Echopaw observed Goldenpaw running her gaze over the herbs, making a sympathetic expression when the she-cat drew her nose a little too closely to the mousebile. She'll likely have that scent in her nose for a moon... the grey she-cat thought to herself as her clanmate continued. She knew very well every cat had a varying level in terms of their sense of smell, it made sense that some cats would have to move closer to identify the mousebile than others. This fact still didn't make her more or less apologetic to her poor clanmate.
Her admiration for Goldenpaw grew as she watched the she-cat seeming to easily travel along the presented herbs. Considering who her mother was, how on earth could she misidentify anything in front of them? It was likely Goldenpaw had been studying herbs for a lot longer than she had since Echopaw only knew what she knew because of her own observations.
The moment Goldenpaw stopped was when Echopaw's expression shifted into concern up to the point Goldenpaw returned to the others and settled down in the space beside her. Echopaw, who was fairly skilled at reading the emotions of others, would gently laid her tail up against Goldenpaw's flank. A mild sense of relief had washed over the she-cat as she realized the reaction Goldenpaw had to the foxglove only confirmed her conclusion. To a degree, Echopaw was aware of the pressure the golden-eyed she-cat was under and did her best to provide some much needed encouragement.
"Try to relax, you know what it is now so you have no reason fearing about confusing it..." the she-cat kindly whispered, her blue eyes meeting hers with only indications of genuine compassion, "Stay strong and focused, try not to let the pressure of the adults force you into a position where you can possibly make a mistake. We are all under a lot of pressure, so let's all work together to try and tackle this pressure together until its all over."

Slikenpaw moved forward after his sister, having been watching the emotions play across her features and absently noting her distress at the foxglove. His eyes tracked her as she moved to sit aside next to Echopaw, watching the she-cat offer empty words of comfort to his sister. He wondered, if their adoptive mother had never stopped him from ingesting the foxglove how Goldenpaw would have turned out. Would she had fled the shame from her actions, would she have rotted away under guilt, or perhaps she would have never gotten the chance; perhaps their adoptive mother would have just gotten rid of her. Shaking his head he turned back to the herbs laid out and let his eyes track across them.
Like his sister he could determine most of them, but unlike his sister he did not move forward to closely examine any of them. Instead he looked up and smiled to Littlebird before giving her an empty shrug and moving aside to wait next to the other apprentices. Sitting and wrapping his tail around his paws as he considered how his casual almost dismissal of the test would affect his chances. Green eyes watching the older cats and resolutely staring away from his sister. Having no desire to suffer under her judgement.

While the apprentices were examining the herbs, Littlebird had been watching them carefully. While this test was to see what herbs they knew, it was also to see how they would react when presented with the unknown. Placing the wild garlic and mouse bile into the mix had been a rather simple way to make the test more difficult. Most cats avoided them, and it would help mask the scent of the other herbs in the line up. Each time the apprentices and kits examined the herbs, she was watching to see which ones the paused at and their expressions. She would push them, would they admit their gaps in knowledge or would they try to bluff? "I have came up with two questions for each of you. Do your best to answer the questions, but remember that we do not expect you to know everything. We will not reveal the answer to these questions or what the herbs before you are until each of you have had a chance to answer" she paused looking over the cats knowing that the other janus would be watching as well. The only apprentice who had not given her much to work with was Silkenpaw. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [I'm just going to post each apprentice's questions here, so that we don't have to wait on each person in a particular order. Each apprentice can walk forward and answer, then I will reply to all of them] Dovepaw: What is the second herb that you examined and what is it used for? In what situations might I use the first herb? Echopaw: What should you always do after using the fifth herb? Where can the fourth herb be found? Goldenpaw:How should the fifth herb be applied? What is the last herb used for? Silkenpaw:When would I use the second herb? How would you apply the first herb?

Dovepaw looked at the line up of herbs as Littlebird asked her his two questions, letting her gaze drift from the second herb a yellow flower on a long stem she twitched an ear. "I don't know the name of the second herb, Littlebird but it's scent is familiar I often smell it in the elders den." She knew she had to be truthful even if if meant admitting she did not know something, it was the only way she would learn. She turned her gaze the the large green leaf at the start of the others and back then back to Littlebird once more. "That one could be used if a cat has gotten a bellyache from eating something that has gone bad or even eaten too much, it can also be used in a situation where a cat has gotten into a fight and is scratched up or if they fall into some thorns. It soothes scratches. You can also use it to help if someone has become stuck or trapped, like in a small space." Hoping her answer was satisfying enough she gave her head a small dip to indicate that she was finished and began to wait as the others where asked their questions.

Echopaw looked at Littlebird almost surprised, not seeming to expect the extended answer. In all honesty she had forgotten the name of the berries that she received for the bellyache, but surprisingly enough knew exactly where they could be located.
"The berries are found in the shrubs towards then center of the territory, mostly during the Newleaf and Greenleaf seasons but in Newleaf you want to make sure you don't pick the green ones. The best time to pick them for leaf bare is on a hot dry day as the berries shrivel on their own."
She pondered the second question for a moment before giving a rather simple answer, "You want to wash your paws after using the fifth herb, making sure you don't accidentally lick your paws on the way."

The touch of Echopaw's tail caused the she-cat to flinch slightly, almost as if she was worried that her competitor would harm her in some way. Goldenpaw quickly realized how tense she must of seemed, and attempted to relax her body slightly. She couldn't appear weak, not in front of those she was competing again and the Janus. Her adoptive mother would kill her if she saw how the apprentice was behaving. "I'm fine." Goldenpaw snapped, sounding a bit more aggressive then she intended. She knew Echopaw was only trying to help, but her heart was beating a mile a minute. She couldn't fail, not even to someone as kind as Echopaw. There was no room for friends during these trials.
Her ear twitched as Littlebird stood in front of them and began to ask questions one by one. Her heart rate speeding up even more as the deputy stood in front of her.
"How should the fifth herb be applied? What is the last herb used for?"
Of course. She should have known they would ask questions about the two herbs she had seemed bewildered about. She bit the inside of her cheek as the seconds ticked by. Everyone was staring at her now, waiting for her answer, waiting for her reaction. Don't freeze up. Don't freeze up. Don't freeze up. Too late, she had frozen up. The seconds were turning into minutes, and she could spot her brother's smug smile a little down the line. He must be eating up her misery.
"The f-fifth herb..." She trailed off. She didn't know the fifth herb. She knew this, and now her adoptive mother was degrading her in her mind.
"You failure. You're bringing shame to this family. How can you possibly not know this."
She closed her eyes as she tried to go back to the question at hand. "I don't know!" She finally yelled out. Her heart dropped in her stomach as the words echoed around her. Everyone was definitely looking at her now if they weren't before, and now her eyes were wide. She had to fix this, and fast.
"The last herb is foxglove. It's used to treat elderly patients with heart problems. To the average cat though it's poisonous and in most cases lead to death when ingested and...and....that's it...." Her answer was fast paced and she now wondered if Littlebird had gotten any of what she had even said. She had blew it. She knew she had blew it. Echopaw and Dovepaw had answered so gracefully, while she had simply panicked and lost sight of the goal.

Echopaw flinched in fear as she looked up at Goldenpaw, clearly taken aback by the she-cat's snap. Sympathy filled her gaze as she watched her fellow apprentice took her turn to attempt answering the questions. Moving forward, Echopaw again attempted to comfort her clan mate to show it was okay to feel nervous, "Goldenpaw relax, it's okay," Echopaw spoke calmly, her tail resting against her pelt when Goldenpaw made the declaration of not knowing about the fifth herb.
Watching Goldenpaw stress so much about the herb's name make her fearful for her friend. Despite the competitive nature they were all in when being here to become the next Janus, they were still clanmates and should be here still supporting each other.
When Goldenpaw managed to make her second response known she made an internal sigh of relief, happy to she still managed to get her answer out despite her anxiety. "Don't stress, you did fine just try not to let yourself get too overwhelmed."
Silkenpaw watched his sisters disastrous response and resisted the urge to snort, served her right for her earlier comments towards him. Seeing her behavior made him glad he had stopped associating with their adopted mother sooner rather than later. Barley spending anytime in the nursery and avoiding her whenever she tried to hunt him down. He couldn't always do so of-course be had managed to avoid the worst of her abusive tirades. Before he grew enough to snarl back at her even if it earned him harsh pushes and cuffs across the head.
When Littleird asked her questions of him he simply shrugged, "When would I use the second herb?", "You could apply the fifth herb however you wanted and saw fit. Every cat uses herbs in different ways, I'm sure there are those that have used it to kill their patients before." How anyone would kill a cat with goldenrod Silkenpaw had no idea, seeing as it was good for healing wounds as a poultice. But that wasn't his problem, he was simply trying to sabotage himself not be helpful.
How would you apply the first herb? "Dock leaves hmm." Silkenpaw bite his tongue when he realized he had named the herb, cursing himself internally. Now coming up with a ridiculous answer would be a little more difficult. "They make good umbrellas." He decided confidently smiling towards Littlebird, with just a hint of a sharp edge to it.
Dovepaw had been sitting silently listening to each of the other cats as their turn came, she watched as Goldenpaw almost had what seemed like a mental breakdown and frowned as she snapped at Echopaw for trying to comfort her, the she-cat even took her by surprise when she all but screamed out her answer to Littlebird. She did not know much about her clanmate aside from the fact that they were adopted and the queen who cared for her and Silkenpaw was less than pleasant, still she seemed to be focusing more on that than what was in front of her and a small part of Dovepaw felt bad that she was going through what she was.
Silkenpaw was acting as if being here was the worst thing in life, his answers were purposefully ridiculous and she shook her head as he stepped back into the line of candidates. Why had he even shown up if he was just going to play dumb, Dovepaw wanted this she shouldn't have to go up against some to-bit tom who was making all of it into a joke. The white and silver she-cat let out a small frustrated sigh but kept her thoughts to herself, she wouldn't be doing herself any favors by reacting to his behavior.

( I'll make an actual reply soon, but I just wanted to mention. The chosen Janus & Promised have been listed in the other tryout thread, though you're free to continue rping here with your characters. <3 )

"I'm not overwhelmed and I don't need your help!" Goldenpaw hissed in response. Why was she being so nice to her? They were in competition with each other. There was no friendships during these trials. They were supposed to be breaking each other down, making each other lose their will to continue, but here this stupid stupid she-cat was being nice. How did she expect to be Janus being nice to those she was supposed to be one uping? or especially Soothsayer Promised for that matter? Her fur bristled in irritation Echopaw. It was clear she hadn't been raised like her and Silkenpaw to take on these roles.
She turned her attention to her brother who was next in line. The tom's answers were ridiculous and she felt her claws curve into the dirt under paw. Silkenpaw was making a mockery of their entire family, especially their adopted mother's teachings. Not that Silkenpaw really paid attention to those teachings. He was always finding every possible way to get of them. "What a jerk." she mumbled under her breathe quietly. The only one who would of heard this was Echopaw, which she hoped the she-cat wouldn't say anything. She felt tears prick at her eyes as the frustration bubbled up. Her brother was always acting out on purpose, and because of it nobody had seen what their mother was doing to her. It was always about what Silkenpaw was doing and how he was acting out. He had left her behind to suffer, and part of her felt angry about it. She would die for her brother if the time ever came, but it was clear he cared little for her and how she felt.

"Silkenpaw I was not aware you were knowledgeable about twoleg items," Echopaw spoke with a smile, not seemingly bothered by the mentioning of the object, "I suppose you've spent a lot of time watching some of the twolegs in their homes while in the rain. Umbrellas are strange things, you wonder why the twolegs don't simply stay sheltered if they do not wish to get wet."
Hearing Goldenpaw whisper drew Echopaw's attention, but out of all reactions it simply made her sad. Her gaze was drawn away when Echopaw whispered softly just low enough for Goldenpaw to hear, "You should try to get along with your brother, one day you may not have anyone in life to look to for support. You never know what you have...until you lose it forever..."

Littlebird waited until all the apprentices had finished answering before turning to Twilightbell and whispering in the she-cat's ear [An interesting bunch this year. Good look with your assessment]. Her gaze then fell upon the young cats "Very good, remember that the sun god knows what lies within you and it is he that shall pass final judgment. Next you will be going with Twilightbell"

"You don't think I tried to get along? He's impossible." She mumbled back at her with clear irritation in her voice. Her fur bristled up as she sank her claws in the soft dirt further and considered the idea of moving to sit next to Dovepaw on the very end, completely away from Silkenpaw and Echopaw entirely, but ultimately decided that it was too late as Littlebird passed the next test off to Twilightbell. "I haven't had anyone for support my entire life. I'm used to it." The irritation was replaced with sadness as she spoke this time, her heart sinking in her stomach as she realized that she had opened her vulnerable side up to Echopaw, something that she didn't really think she'd do to a cat she just met. What come of voodoo powers did this she-cat possess? She couldn't help but feel like Echopaw was somehow manipulating her to be open to somehow use against her in later trials. No way was someone this nice, especially during a competition. "Stop being nice. It's obvious it's fake." She finally hissed out.

Echopaw's eyes looked down, for the first time during their conversation appearing genuinely hurt. "I'm sorry that your life has been hard enough that you cannot determine genuine kindness from someone attempting to manipulate you... I truly hope we may be able to be friends, even if you are not capable of doing so right now. I'm sorry to have been such a bother..." The young apprentice stood up and settled herself calmly on the other side of Dovepaw, feeling it was best to place some distance from Goldenpaw seemed that the young she-cat had managed to make Goldenpaw upset. 'I made her hate me, I never should have mentioned her brother, it's all my fault..." she thought to her self solemnly, trying to hide her sadness with little success.
