Narcissuspaw felt embarrassed to be late to the Janus test. The night before she had been too excited to go to sleep that when she did finally catch a wink of sleep she accidentally slept in that morning. The normally punctual she-cat found herself rushing. Skipping her breakfast and didnt bother to sort out her pelt either. She found the gathering of cats. As she approached she could see Foxstar, Mountainsound, and the other Janus gathered with a group of her fellow Apprentices. “Sorry I’m late...” Her voice trailed off as she padded closer and closer to the group. She awkwardly halted beside a group of Apprentices that consisted of Silkenpaw, Goldenpaw, and Dovepaw. The small golden pointed Siamese wished she could have blended into the background. Instantly regretting that she had spoken up before she noticed how the tensions among the other Apprentices seemed to be running high.

(Bleh sorry for the poo reply, I promise they will get better once I've had my coffee haha)
Dovepaw turned her gaze to Silkenpaw as laughter began to choke his words, she let out a disgusted hiss and sat down wrapping her tail around her paw the tip still twitching with annoyance. Her eyes narrowed she watched Goldenpaw twirl around with her attention on her brother, this whole thing had become a mess. Dovepaw watched as Goldenpaw found a spot just beside Mountainsound, she ignored the other apprentice still well aware of the fierce glare she was receiving. The white and silver she-cat turned her attention to the newest member of the group, the tension in the air could drown a cat and she knew this cat could feel it as well when she noticed the regretful look on her face after speaking aloud.
The fresh scent of pubescent apprentices and lust for power was nauseating. She may had always been a suck in her youth, but she wasn't dumb enough to act like a jerk in front of superiors unless it benefited her. At the end of the day you either had what it took to be a janus or you didn't and if you did it was a popularity contest that got you in. She could already about peg everyone.
Silkenpaw, rebel
Goldenpaw, uptight know it all
Dovepaw, logically bland
Narcissuspaw, the shy
Great turn out.
Autumngossamer had been waiting for them all to show up. Maybe more would come, but honestly if it would only expand upon this freakshow she didn't want anymore candidates. She already decided Silkenpaw would probably be chosen and be an obnoxious part of her life. Better than Goldenpaw, rebels at least didn't get in your business. Dovepaw and Narcissuspaw were personally her choice because they were the most unlikely to disobey her on a regular basis or give her a hard time and that was about all she had to be in charge of thinking of. First impressions were everything right?
"Hey, welcome to the tryouts. Just wanted to say good luck to you four, I even got each of you a little something," Autumngossamer winked and handed Silkenpaw, Dovepaw, Goldenpaw, and Narcissuspaw four leaf clovers, "For luck and all that, but I'm sure you don't need it. Anyways, I'll see you in the final round."

Dovepaw sat ready and waiting, her gaze sweeping to Autumngossamer as she greeted the unsightly bunch of apprentices and wished them luck. She wouldn't admit she needed such things but even through her confidence she knew she did not know everything, she took the four leaf clover from her and gave a small nod. She could feel the superior air around this cat and she had done enough already to make herself look foolish, all she wanted was to get this test started to prove there was more to her than what they saw sitting before them.
"Should I eat it then?" Silkenpaw asked Autumngossmar with wide curious eyes, as if really contemplating such an action. When in truth the question was more to annoy as many people in his general vicinity and embarrass Goldenpaw even greater. He pierced the clover she had pushed towards him with a claw, the delicate small plant being ruined with just that little action. "Whoops." He huffed as he inelegantly pulled his claw from it and split it in half. "There goes all my luck I suppose." He sighed before sending a forlorn glance towards Autumngossmar, "it seems I won't be seeing you in the final round. Without this clover for luck I'll probably loose my life before I see this through to the end. It's been an honor serving with you, thank-you for the opportunity." Dipping his head as a sign of respect he sat back, hunching his shoulders once more to really play of the act of coming to terms with his fate.
Narcissuspaw stood quietly amongst the group of apprentices. She didn’t want to draw any negative attention to herself. She had always been taught speaking rudely to your superiors could bring you more trouble then it was worth. She was hoping to prove herself through the tests. Then making a scene like some of the other apprentices. When Janus Autumngossamer passed out the four four leaf clovers to Goldenpaw, Silkenpaw, Dovepaw and herself. She found the small plant interesting. She gave it a cautious sniff and wondered if there was a deeper meaning behind the clover and if it connected to one of the tests.

The brown tabby sighed, flicking his ear with irritation. None of them would be a Janus at this rate if all they did was fight and bicker and snap. "Knock it off, all of you. It's like I'm listening to kits squabble over a leaf and it's exhausting." He pointed his gaze towards Goldenpaw. Before, he had let it slide and just made a general statement but now it was truly directed at the she-cat. It was unusual for the young Janus to get irritated or step in to anything but their behavior was ridiculous. "If you want to become a Janus you'll need to learn how to act like one first and foremost. The sun god doesn't just accept any spoiled brat," his eyes never left Goldenpaw.

Dovepaw looked at the brown tom as he spoke and lowered her head, she wanted this more than anything and as his words rang in her ears she knew her behavior had been ridiculous. She could feel his frustration was mostly targeted at Goldenpaw and his gaze didn't leave her but Dovepaw spoke an apology "I'm sorry." Her words were genuine and she lifted her head back up and looked at Acaiburst her eyes glowing with determination to do her best with whatever they threw at her in this test, she would be chosen because she deserved it and proved to them that she had what it takes.
The presentation of the four leaf clovers by Autumngossamer caused a slight gleam to materialized in her golden gaze. The excitement beginning to slowly bubble under her skin causing Goldenpaw to shiver with excitement. However, just as quickly had the signs of excitement materialize did it disappear. The realization hitting her that she needed to take this seriously if she was to make their adopted mother proud and bring glory back to her family. She picked up the clover between her claws and pawing at her head tucked the plant behind her ear. She would need the luck. "Thank yo-" the words were cut off at Silkenpaw's actions towards the gift. The boiling anger returning once more into the pits of her optics.
"Do you always have to embarrass our family? Really?" the words hissed out into her brother's ear. Her paw reached forward and yanked the shredded four leaf clover from in front of him. "You don't even deserve this." She almost didn't hear Acaiburst's words over the chaos.
Knock if off
The words struck her ears and she turned her attention towards the source. The Janus was staring her down as she talked, and now Goldenpaw felt her heart beat against her chest as her ears laid flat against her head. "But he-" Her paw lifted to point at the remains of Autumngossamer's gift, but then she quickly cut herself off as she realized that the Janus probably cared little. The memories of her childhood quickly flashing before her, Autumngossamer turning into Goldenpaw's adoptive mom in front of her. "Knock it off, Goldenkit! Silkenkit! You both don't have time to play! You won't get anywhere if you just play mossball all day. Useless."
Her eyes were now staring down at her paws, her tail down on the ground and her ears still pinned to her head. The four leaf clover only slightly clinging to the fur behind her left ear. She zapped her attention back to what was going on in front of her as she listened to Dovepaw apology. "Same... I mean... I'm sorry too." Her voice was meek for the first time since her arrival.

"I apologize, but you seem to have forgotten about me," a soft voice sounded as a familiar looking grey she-cat stepped forward from her place in the shadows.
Echopaw's soft looking white paws quieted the sounds of her pawsteps, so much so it was a wonder when the young cat had actually arrived. Unlike her other comrades who had gathered for their chance to become one of the newest Jani, Echopaw found herself simply sitting and observing the actions of the cats before her. She knew her clanmates well, she grew up with them after all; however they were now in possession with an overwhelming sense of competition for one of the greatest honors the Sun God could possibly bestow upon them. The soft furred she-cat stood alone rather than alongside family like some of the attendees, but her pale green eyes showed absolutely no sign of feelings of despair towards this fact. In reality, the she-cat genuinely appeared excited to see so many attempting to prove themselves.
"It is my hope our Sun God understands how honored we are for this opportunity. I know my parents Stonewhisker and Dawnshadow would be pleased to see me here competing amongst my fellow clanmates. Thank you for being the ones to guide us."
I promise I will bring them great joy and pride on this day.

Things had grown quiet as the tension faded to be replaced with the anticipation of starting their test, tails flicked and ears twitched but no cat made a sound until a soft apology came from the shadows. It would have been hard for any cat to know the grey she-cat had been there, her pelt blending into the darkness where she sat and her scent being blown away from them.
Dovepaw watched as she moved into the light and wondered about the excited gleam in her eyes and on her face, the silver and white she-cat filtered the names of her clanmates through her head and stopped as she figured out the name of the newest apprentice in the group. Echopaw. Dovepaw began to think of the times she had seen the apprentice around camp, she always seemed happy and ready to help. Dovepaw nodded curtly in agreement to the she-cats words, though she did not speak it aloud she was honored to be here and wondered just how many of the others felt the same.

Echopaw's eyes flickered where they met Dovepaw's gaze, her gaze seeming to relax at the sight of a fairly familiar face. The young cat had to admit she often had a habit of observing the actions and conversations of her clanmates far more than actually engaging with them. Despite the overwhelming sense of competition, Echopaw would not object to the possibility of establishing a friendship, even possibly a future partnership should they both get selected. The she-cat was always eager to learn more especially about those she observed, how much more information could she possibly gather simply by talking to them? If she was going to become the next Janis, the requirement of being observant and calculating would not be enough. The she-cat genuinely needed to learn what is meant to deeply read and understand the feeling of others.
The she-cat made her way and settled down alongside her fellow comrade, her eyes glimmering with delight with the possibility of having been studied by her.
"I am genuinely sorry for my cause in a delay Dovepaw, I hope that with this despite it's inconvenience we may become good friends."
For a moment she flinched a little, she didn't quite realize how much her eagerness was truly affecting her judgement.

Dovepaws eyes followed the other apprentice and she sighed inwardly as she realized Echopaw was heading straight for her, her body stiffened as the she-cat settled beside her but she held back the biting words that began to bubble inside of her. She wouldn't cause more trouble she would just have to deal with it until this was all over. Dovepaw was often approached by the cats she watched, it was the main reason she did most of her observing from the shadows where no cat could see her.
"You have nothing to apologize for, I don't believe you delayed anything." She forced a small smile keeping her voice level. It's been a mess here anyway, no one would have noticed if she had flown down from the sky. "Friends..." She tested the word cautiously her whiskers twitching, she didn't have friends but that was a conscious choice. "Perhaps." Dovepaw knew she would need allies, but friends was more than she could cope with right now. Echopaw didn't need to know that though, the she-cat wasn't annoying like the others though her delightful personality was a bit overwhelming to Dovepaw.

Well, this was a rather awkward moment. Mountainsound's tail twitched, rather thankful that the younger cat had called out the apprentices' attitudes. Now, it wasn't necessarily surprising to her, given what SunClan had become under Foxstar's reign, in fact, she was almost relieved they weren't worse behaved. But this had gone on long enough. It was about time they actually got to their tests. This was a decent number for the open ranks they had, and if they had any more arrive, they could simply join in at whatever point the rest were at and take the penalty of not being able to properly show off their potential for their lateness.
Clearing her throat slightly, the feline brought focus back towards her and the Priestess Promised. "Now that everyone is here, I think it is time to begin. There will be three tests. The first will Littlebird and I testing your basic herb knowledge. The second will test your abilities concerning omens, and whether you show promise in that route, run by Dragonswrath and Twilightbell. The last is perhaps the most difficult. The Janus will each take turns asking you all a question, which each of you will have to answer. It is they who will choose the nominees for the Sun God to judge, so they are the ones you most want to impress." Thus far, few of them had done particularly well in that category, if Acaiburst's comment was any indicator. Luckily, they had three tests to prove they were more than initial impressions.

Hearing Mountainsounds voice ring through her ears she turned her attention from Echopaw and began to listen carefully as she explained how the three test would take place and by whom, an anxious shiver ran down her spin and her eyes lit up with readiness as they were about to start. Dovepaw would be one step closer to reaching her goal, something she had wanted for so long. The she-cat knew she would be upset if she wasn't chosen but she also knew the Sun God would only pick the cats who were right for this and she would not argue with that, she would simply try harder if she ever got the chance again. Giving herself a soft shake she sat up and curled her tail over her paws, she could do this.

Her gaze shimmered in awe as she listened to the Senator, appearing to grow excited for the chance to test her knowledge. The young cat was always observant and curious to know more, even going as far as to ask questions on the actions of those with more experience. Even if the Sun God were not to choose her, she would accept this as a message to grow more knowledgeable for her clan and return for further study. Echopaw would not settle for mediocre, the she-cat only hoped the Sun God understood this and chose her only for being truly exceptional. The positive appearing apprentice wanted to truly grow for her clan, wanting to assist in removing the stain Foxstar seemed to have permanently left for them.
Echopaw would step forward for a moment, her head tilting to the side with a curiously laced confusion.
"I apologize for asking, but may I ask how our skills with Omens may be tested?"
For a moment her eyes brightened at the thought of what her next question would be, the she-cat practically ready to jump in excitement...
"Will the Sun God be sending us a sign in order to test us?!"

What a lively bunch, but at least they had no shortage of candidates. Littlebird smiled slightly at the question "All in good time, Dragonswrath and Twilightbell will explain their task when the time comes. For now, we shall see what knowledge you have already gained about herbs. Myself and Mountainsound have assembled the six herbs before you. You shall each have a chance to examine them carefully. Once finished, we will quiz you individually about the name of each herb, their properties, how they are harvested, or how they are used. Line up, and once your name is called you may move forward to begin your examination of the herbs" The grey she-cat motioned for them to form a line to make it a little more orderly "Romancepaw, you will go first"
The white tom purred as he walked over to the first of the pile of herbs. It was comprised of large green leaves that he didn't recognize immediately. They were larger than his paws and the stem seemed pinkish redish. He lowered his head taking in the scent, as his eyes widened. He remembered the smell, although he didn't remember the leaf itself. Littlebird have given him this not to long ago after feast when his stomach had been upset from eating to much fresh kill. What had she called it? He scrunched his nose trying to remember before being asked to move to the next one.
The next herbs was a stem with small yellow flowers. They smelled really good, but he couldn't say that he recognized it. He had seen it growing in a few places in their territory, but not very often. He shrugged his shoulders, before moving on to the next. Romancepaw couldn't help but scrunch up his nose at the next herbs. It STUNK. Without really taking to much time to examine it, he quickly moved onto the next one.The next were a few little purple berries. He rolled them over gently with his paw taking a few moments to take it in. Next was a substance that he was really familiar with. It's stink only left one option. It was mouse bile. His mentor sent him to the elders den to check for ticks more than once, and it was every apprentices bane. The last one really confused him, but he shock his head and moved out of the way for the next cat.
[Dock leaves, goldenrod, wild garlic, juniper berries, mouse bile , foxglove, you don't have to wait on me to reply, just go one at a time to examine the herbs :3]

Dovepaw waited in line as Romancepaw studied the six herbs chosen as part of their first test, her paws worked the ground below and as he reached the end and they called her name she padded forward dipping her head to Littlebird and Mountainsound before she lowered her gaze to examine the plants.
She lowered her head to sniff the first, a large green leaf. Dovepaw touched it gently with her paw and tilted her head at how familiar it seemed, sorrel came to mind first she had seen it before but the image of it was fuzzy all she knew was it was similar to the leaf in front of her. Deciding that's what it was she moved to the next, it had a yellow flower and the smell reminded her of the elders den for some reason but she couldn't place the name.
The strong scent of the next herb hit her before she reached it and she drew away slightly, she knew what this was wild garlic. The she-cat had stumbled across some in the territory and carried its pungent smell on her pelt for days, she had learned a lot about it during that time. The juice helps prevent infections and it is good for getting rid of fleas. She nodded to herself and moved to the last of the line recognizing Juniper berries good for Bellyache and cats having trouble breathing. The next held a foul scent and she quickly passed it, any cat should know what mouse bile was. Dovepaw did not know the last one and not wanting to hold up the others any longer she moved to the side and sat beside Romancepaw to wait.

Acaiburst nodded with approval as each of them apologized and sat back to watch the first test unravel before him. Of course, he knew the answers to these questions by now and was merely here to observe and see who did what in order to properly evaluate them later. He hadn't entirely decided on his question just yet, as he wanted to tailor it to the specific group. After what he had witnessed, however, he began to get a good sense of the type of question he should ask.

Echopaw ushered herself past Dovepaw as her enthusiastic overtones seemed to calm in nature. Immediately she scented the overwhelming scents of wild garlic and mouse bile, ones that filled her nostrils and smothered her senses. For a moment she pondered over an idea that arose when gazing back at Littlebird, her blue eyes glimmering with curiousity. Had Littlebird chosen to add these two things as a way to provide more difficulty to the test? The possibility filled her with awe and resulted in her internally taking note of the method of execution.
Approaching the first herb, the she-cat immediately noticed a distinctive tangy scent rising from the leaves, only barely distinguishable from the powerful mouse bile and garlic scents that still filled the air. She remembered this scent specifically from a time she watched the same leaves being chewed up and as a poultice placed on a kit's scratches. It was after a mock battle when one of the kits in the clan had forgotten to sheath their claws resulting in another with minor injuries.
Walking over to the second, Echopaw immediately recognized this herb as goldenrod, the yellow flowers were ones often use for injuries during the green-leaf season when the flowers were at their peak during their bloom cycle.
Taking note of the garlic, she focused on the texture and condition of the bulbs. Each one had been gathered very carefully while one seemed to have been purposely crushed as a way to release the scent for each of the attending young cats. It was impressive, showing nothing but a healthy flesh that was plentiful in the juices it possessed.
For a moment she hesitated on the appearance of the berries, they reminded her of the same berries she received after drinking from a strange puddle at the outer edge of the territory. It had caused her a bellyache that lasted at least a quarter moon, but these berries assisted in providing her some comfort until the pain was gone.
The mouse bile was an object she would not hesistate to usher away from, doing her best to hide any contempt for the disgusting substance.
Finally, her attention was drawn to the last herb at the end of line. Echopaw immediately felt her fur rise slightly, her eyes narrowing at the sight of the foxglove whose seeds were poisonous to any cat. Tiny and small, they could easily be mistaken for poppyseeds should a cat not realize what flower they came from. She made no effort to touch or smell the flower, simply kept a distance knowing the capability it had to kill.
