Reedshadow didn't hesitate, flopping to the ground as soon as it became shaded. He couldn't help it, he was tired after his long trip. Besides, it gave him a moment to actually process what she said. I hadn't even thought of that. Betraying your group and getting killed by them was common enough. Funk had heard a few groups talk about it while he was treating them. Still, why hadn't Reedshadow thought of it? Perhaps he was more absent minded than Funk gave him credit for.
"I was surprised too. He doesn't seem like the type to be that generous. Appearances are deceiving, huh? I can't help but admire him for that." Rolling over, he continued sheepsihly, "Heh Heh. Admittedly, I thought they would have turned tail and gotten as far away from Waterclan after getting beaten so bad. As for leaving, it... uh, didn't cross my mind. heh ... heh." Reedshadow'a laugh was awkward, flipping back up to a sitting position and tapping the back of his head with his tail.

Gentlebreeze took in what Reedshadow had said and agreed with him by nodding her head when he mentioned he admired the WaterClan leader. It did seem to her though he wasn't quite truthful concerning his former companions. It was in the way he laughed when he talked about them that seemed strange to her. She gave her shoulders a slight shrug. What is it to her, a stranger, if he's not being truthful about the rogues? But the fact they might even be around was useful information she would share with Ravenstar. They didn't need a band of rogues lurking about near their borders.
She had sat down in her own shady spot and there was actually a slight breeze here. The cooler air felt good as it ruffled her gray tabby fur. "When we've rested enough, I'll show you the small spring. It's over closer to the mountain where the ground starts to go up."

Funk nodded, and stretched his front legs out. His story seemed fine, but the back of his mind was analyzing everything about it. Perhaps Reedshadow as a moody yet absent minded cat wasn't believable enough. Why wouldn't it be though? Oh well. He shouldn't worry about such things. Thinking about it would only lead to doubt, and he didn't have the capacity to doubt himself. If she believed him, she believed him. And if she didn't, he'd get chased out but come back in a moon or two when the whole thing blew over.
"So what about you? I've done all the talking when I'm just as curious about you." It was somewhat true, plus he just wanted to give his parched throat a break, "Where did you travel with your grandfather?"
Post by Whitemuzzle on Jul 6, 2019 15:02:09 GMT -5
"Mostly in the lands west of the clan territories," she replied. "But also around the Moon Creek. He wanted to talk with his mate who died." She really didn't want to go into details. That was Hawkstar's business anyways. "Is that where your former friends are from? The lands to the west?" She wanted to shift the conversation away from herself. This is still a strange cat even though he's on a mission for a medicine cat. He's from another clan and not from SummerClan. "Like I said, we met some really bad ones over there."

no fun. no fun. i gotta carry the convo huh?
Funk held himself back from rolling his eyes, "I think so." He still answered, "I met them around there but we traveled just about everywhere so it's hard to say." He also didn't wanna go into details, largely cause the more he gave, the more easily his story would unravel. Reedshadow was probably used to talking with others so this was nothing, but someone so used to the confines of clanhood saw him as a threat.

The news he gave made Gentlebreeze be more alert. If there's rogues around the Moon Creek, the clan leader should know. "I don't know about you but I'm ready for that drink. The spring is right over there." She indicated an area out of view just below a small rise. She rose to her feet and stretched out her hind legs. "Come on," she meowed as she waved her tail for Reedshadow to follow her. "What's living in WaterClan like? Do they really spend more time in the water than on land?" It was what she had heard ever since she was a little kit. "I rather drink it than live in it."

"Technically, yeah, though not all the time since we don't wanna scare the fish off." Reedshadow stood as well, stretching each limb by itself before following Gentlebreeze. He only knew so much, from assumptions and from the vague details a nervous apprentice gave him, "We mostly sit on the edge of the water and fish there, but after, you practically need to swim upstream to get back to camp." He shrugged, keeping his tone light, "It's not too bad, to be honest. Sure, I'd rather not live in it too, but it's better than where I went as a rogue."

"Sounds like you might grow fins and flippers if you stay there any length of time." The sound of the small spring came to her ears before she saw it. After being in the hot sun, it was a very refreshing sound. "Well, here it is," Gentlebreeze meowed. "It's probably not much to look at if you're a WaterClan cat but it's a refreshing drink none the less." The spring bubbled out of the ground in a shady area among the oak trees. Sunlight dappled the ground and water giving the whole area an inviting place to be. The gray tabby stopped at the edge of the pool which was only a few fox lengths across and began to drink.

"I'm surprised they haven't yet." There were enough generations, you'd think their bodies would have adapted to it. He wondered if they had developed webbing between their toes. Or the oils they secreted into their fur was different. Maybe he could use this facade to test that theory.
"Nah, this is great." Funk considered jumping into it; mostly to cool off but slightly to really support his Waterclan theory. He was no aquatic cat though, and he didn't wanna scare off Gentlebreeze. He watched the bubbles babble on the surface for a moment before lowering his head to drink.

"Ahhhh," Gentlebreeze purred contentedly after finishing drinking. She then began to lightly splash some water onto her fur by flipping it up onto her body with her front paws. She was careful not to disturb Reedshadow's drinking, however. Once she was satisfied, the gray tabby stretched her legs as she walked a few steps away then sat down in the sun dappled shade. "So when you're sufficiently rested, I'll help you carry the hops to our eastern border. That way you can avoid crossing into SpringClan on your way back home." Then she added, "But that's all the farther I can go."

"aww, and here's me hoping I could take you home. Shame, but I understand." He threw in a quick wink cause why not? It was an innocent claim, from Reedshadow at least. He sat up and let out a yawn, dipping his paw into the spring and rubbing it onto his face to wake him up for the home stretch. It was only just beginning to approach evening, he shouldn't be this tired, "Thanks again for all your help. We really appreciate it." He briefly wondered if he'd see the she-cat again. The small flashes of life that popped into his mind were obviously fake, like a crude puppet show. The curtain closed as he smiled.

Her facial skin grew warm under her fur as Reedshadow wished she'd go home with him. But Gentlebreeze was a SummerClan warrior through and through and would never even consider such an offer. Besides even if Reedshadow had ended up in SummerClan instead of WaterClan she doubted even then she'd moon over him. He was too roguish for her liking. However he is good to look at, she pondered with a smile. "You're very welcome. I'm more than glad to help," she replied. "And I'm glad you understand about me not going back to WaterClan with you."
A rustling sound from behind Gentlebreeze startled her and she turned her head to see what caused it. She was relieved to see her grown son appear from out of the undergrowth. In his mouth was a small bundle of marigolds and on his face was a questioning look. His mother would be the last cat ever to betray her clan by taking up with some strange cat.

"I understand, I can always make the trek back to see you, ri-" Freezeframe. Really, Funk was probably not gonna come back here unless need be. I mean, Summerclan, come on. Too hot. Anyway, it was going well, and a little flattery hurt no one. Now, he'd been so focused on his story and Gentlebreeze, he kinda forgot there were other cats in the clan. So now please imagine his dumb founded face when this guy showed up. 'Kay, back to reality.
"iii hi... uh, you." He transitioned, smooth as butter, this one. Where were there marigolds? Why didn't he get any? Oh, and who was this guy? All important to Funk.

Graythorn dropped the bundle of marigolds from his mouth and they fell in a tangled heap at his feet. "What's going on here?" he asked his mother hoping beyond hope he hadn't stumbled upon a tryst. "Who's this?" His eyes narrowed as he watched the stranger. He felt the same way a cat watches a mouse, ready to pounce in an instant.
Gentlebreeze sensed the aggression coming from her son. She knew it was understandable because she was entertaining a stranger on her clan's territory. "It's not what you think," she told him, rising to her feet. "Reedshadow is helping his medicine cat by gathering herbs they don't have in WaterClan. I offered to help him." She then looked to Reedshadow hoping he would explain more himself.
Graythorn relaxed his stance just a little but still glared at the stranger. Something wasn't quite right but he was willing to listen.

Funk looked at Graythorn, then back at Gentlebreeze, and back to Graythorn. They knew each other obviously, but were they close? Did he just hit on this guy's girl or sister or mom? Oops.
Oh well, things happen. He stood his ground, "Yes, I'm Reedshadow of Waterclan. Our medicine cats have been busy lately, so they recruited a few warriors to get herbs for them. I happened to be one of them. I didn't intend to come to Summerclan, and I won't come back once I cross the border. Gentlebreeze offered to help me carry the herbs to that point." He explained calmly, holding his ground firmly.

"That's strange," Graythorn meowed thoughtfully. "Juniper didn't say anything about sending out cats to gather herbs for her at the half moon gathering just three nights ago." He stared at Reedshadow trying to assess him. "And she gave no indication that she and her apprentice were over worked."
"What's wrong?" Gentlebreeze asked Graythorn but he didn't answer her. She looked questioningly at Reedshadow and then back at her son.
"Is it Silverfin?" the medicine cat asked. "Did he come down with his cough again?"
Post by strawberrycupid on Jul 27, 2019 21:17:25 GMT -5
Funk held back a laugh. Uh oh spaghetti-ohs, he was in a spot of trouble. Not that Funk looked overly worried. But the way this tom talked, he must be the medicine cat to attend half moon gatherings. How funny. In another universe, he probably met Greythorn there rather than here.
"Yeah, I'm not surprised. I didn't really expect to be sent out. I'm not one for gossip, but we've had a few incidents and a fair amount of our cats are stressed because of them. I was pulled aside suddenly today and was told to try and find something that would soothe their nerves. Never expected to come all the way here though." He said with a laugh. Sure, he could have went with this Silverfin person, but he knew he'd be grilled to know them, and this was more ambiguous.
Post by Whitemuzzle on Jul 28, 2019 14:53:11 GMT -5
"Hmm," Graythorn said thoughtfully. "That's too bad." The gray tabby still didn't trust this strange cat but then again he generally doesn't trust many cats. And he didn't say anything about Silverfin... He scratched at the ground as he thought quickly. "That must be what Juniper meant when she mentioned that Troutstripe wasn't quite himself lately. He tends to be a nervous sort as you probably well know. So did he go off on his own again and worry the clan like he did last time? Juniper said it took a patrol two days last Newleaf just to find him."
Post by strawberrycupid on Jul 29, 2019 17:28:18 GMT -5
"Yeah, he did. I wasn't on the patrol, but it took them most of the day to find him two days ago." Casually watching the two, he answered easily. Fine, if he had to ask specific questions, he would get specific answers. Graythorn didn't seem the trusting type, so Funk had to play along with his game until he was let go. They must do a lot more talking at the medicine cat gatherings than they used to.

Graythorn grinned with his mouth but his eyes were icy slits. This so called WaterClan cat had fallen right into his trap. He had side stepped the first landmine with 'Silverfin' but had fallen face first into the second trap. If Reedshadow had said he didn't know what he was talking about, Graythorn would have probably let him go. "There is no cat called Troutstripe in WaterClan because I just made up that whole story! I didn't trust you at the start and I wanted to find out if what you're telling us was true," he growled.
Gentlebreeze was alarmed and backed away a few steps. "What are you saying?" she asked her son.
"That he's an imposter!" came his reply.
"Reedshadow? Is this true? Are you lying to us?" There was a pleading tone in her voice, mingled with a bit of hurt. "Say it isn't so." Gentlebreeze didn't want to believe she was duped by a smooth talking cat. She had actually wanted to help him. And was he really still a member of that rogue group he talked about?
