Breezepaw let out a yawn as the sun started peeking over the horizon. It hadn't been long since his mentor started coughing, but the warrior was already unfit to train. The blue-grey apprentice let out a sigh and drifted over to the fresh-kill pile, wishing there was something he could do. He didn't want to sit around camp all day, and he wanted to help his mentor but the medicine cat told him he wasn't allowed to go near. What else was there to do?
Chim had been up half the night, listening to the weak rasp of Caspianpaw’s breathing. His in-law was fairly poorly, and he doubted he had more than a few days left. The ginger warrior sighed as the apprentice finally fell back asleep and rose stiffly to his paws, heading toward his own den. He stopped when he spotted Breezepaw and debated for a moment, then growled, “Come on, don’t just look at the empty kill pile, let’s head out.”
That was it. No explanation, he just turned and stalked toward the exit instead. After moons of being alone he rarely even spoke to the others, but Squirrelpool has asked him to look after this one.

His rounded ears pricked at Chimerahunt spoke up. He was offering to take him hunting? He knew that the ginger tom was Squirrelpool's uncle, and was more tolerant of her than most any other cat. He had grown grumpier, though. With all of the loss that surrounded him, Breezepaw couldn't blame him for becoming that way. It was surprising that he wanted to take the apprentice hunting.
Breezepaw fought the little bounce that threatened to come through his step as he followed the warrior. "Last time Titianstorm took me out, I was able to catch a finch." He purred as he caught up to Chimerahunt. "I know it's just a little bird, but it felt incredible."
His ear twitched back. That was it? Prey was hard to come by in the cold season, but they were always in desperate need, especially with hunters starting to drop like flies. He had hoped the apprentice was a little farther along in his training than that. "Great," he muttered unenthusiastically. "Did you catch anything else?" Ever? He hadn't exactly planned on teaching Breezepaw everything, just giving him a chance to get out of camp and hunt, but he was beginning to realize he might not quite get his wish.

Breezepaw frowned for a moment, wishing he had a little more to boast. Honestly, that finch had been the highlight of his training. "Uh... I caught a few mice once!" He finally piped up, smiling up at Chimerahunt again. "They were napping... but it still counts for something, right?!"
"Sure." His tone implied it definitely did not count. Already Chim was cursing his former apprentice for roping him into this in the first place instead of looking after the young cat herself. Did she think he had infinite time on his paws? A moon ago he did, but then he never would have agreed to look after Breezepaw anyway. It was only now that he was busy he was even remotely willing, and now he had no time for training. "Didn't your mentor teach you anything?"

If Chim was annoyed with him, the young tom didn't seem to notice. In fact, he looked as happy as a lark as he padded next to the warrior. "Hmmmmmmmmm." Breezepaw thought for a long time, trying to think back to his and Titianstorm's training sessions. "Oh! I learned the front paw swipe thing!" He purred and swung a paw forward clumsily. "It's been a while since we practiced it, but I think I still got it. I heard that Rainpaw and Aspenpaw's mentor taught them how to spar together. Wow, that must have been fun!" Titianstorm had been one of the first to fall ill, so he never got to train with his brothers.

"The front paw swipe. Great, that'll come in use for hunting," Chim drawled with a shake of his head. He might not be the best mentor either, but at least he taught his cats how to hunt. Once Titanstorm got better he needed to step up and take this training seriously. If he got better. No cat had recovered from the cough yet but only a few had been affected, many of them young or old, so it was not yet seen as a death sentence. "At least he taught you the basics of hunting, right?"

Breezepaw chuckled at Chim's lack-of-amusement. He would have to prove himself to the warrior. Standing a little taller and making a silent resolve to do so, the blue-grey tom nodded. "Of course! I know how to crouch and stalk. He also showed me how to keep your tail off the ground when stalking forward. Like this!" He began to demonstrate, concentrating so hard on keeping his tail off the ground that it straightened out like a stick and made his movements stiff.
Well... it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't a great stance either. He needed practice. Chim wasn't his mentor, though, and they needed food now, not later when the apprentice was more skilled. "Alright, alright, what about fishing? You can fish, right?"

His face scrunched up in thought as he tried to recall all of his fishing skills. That had been the first thing Titianstorm taught him, but it had been a while since he actually practiced it...oops. His eyes drifted up to Chim and he gave him a cheeky smile. "Of course! It's second nature for Waterclan cats, right?" He purred brightly.
"No." He took that as a sign Breezepaw didn't know how to fish either. "Borders? Do you know who are neighbors are? Or our allies?" Alliances weren't hard, at least: they only really had one, DayClan.

Breezepaw, for once, looked a little crestfallen. "Yeah. Dayclan is our friend and our neighbors are... the Regime and Brookclan, right?" He meowed hopefully, glancing up at Chim with wide amber eyes.
"And?" Chim turned on the tom in disbelief, his lip curling. "EarthClan. Didn't Titanstorm teach you anything? How am I supposed to take you out if you don't know anything? I'm not your mentor, I have other things to do," he snapped.

Breezepaw's ears flattened against his head in alarm and shame. He thought he had remembered all of them... Letting out a sigh, he glanced at his paws. "Titianstorm tried to teach me, but I get distracted easily." He admitted. "He was also really sick... I didn't want to make him more exhausted by asking questions."
Chim huffed, doing his best not to let the tom's sad look get to him. "Fine," he muttered gruffly, "let's just get going and try something. Maybe we'll get lucky. What can you scent?" At least for now the prey was still running well, but the days were getting shorter.

Breezepaw smiled softly as Chimerahunt gave in. He had been so worried that the grumpy tom would give up on him. He'd have to thank Squirrelpool later. His nose twitched as he scented the air carefully. Straining his senses, he tried to hone in on one scent. Hmm... It's some sort of bird...Oh, a magpie! His ears pricked up in delight as the realization and he turned to Chimerahunt with a pleased expression. "I can scent a magpie!"
"Good," he replied, with a confirmatory sniff. "Now let's catch it." He wasn't going to risk losing prey, not now: they had less hunters and the sick cats would need more prey than ever to keep their strength up. "Try and find it, then tell me what your plan is."

"Alright!" He purred, feeling more determined now. He scented the air once more and tried to hone in on the source of the scent. He stalked forward until he could spot the black and white bird. "Gotcha." Breezepaw whispered with a small smile. He waggled his haunches then sprang forward with paws and claws outstretched. It was a clumsy move, but somehow he still managed to grasp the wing of the bird. "Look, Chimerahunt! I got it!" He meowed happily while the bird still squawked and flapped around.
Stalking slow, he circled around the other side of the bird, slowly working his way around. If the bird ran from Breezepaw, there was a chance he'd be able to snag it before it flew out of reach. He crouched down in the long grasses and waited, holding his breath, until the apprentice leaped. He emerged carefully and moved closer. "So you did. Now you need to kill it; you're scaring the prey, and that'll seep into the meat. It won't taste as good."
