Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
hello dears, and welcome to the first summerclan hunting thread under the new prey tracking system!
all information can be found HERE, but in short: cats need to hunt in roleplay before the prey log runs out of food! Half the current food expires on October 31st, so we need to replace it before our cats start starving to death. In a fall hunting patrol, each cat can catch up 0-3 pieces of prey! You do not need to roll the dice for this, just roleplay out your cat catching the prey- it can be short and sweet!
Take into account your cats age and skill level. An apprentice would likely catch 0-1 pieces, while an experienced warrior would likely catch 2-3 pieces. It's up to you!
this thread will consist of juniperdust, 1-3 summerclan warriors/apprentices, and a nightclan warrior (since all summerclan patrols need to be monitored by a nightclan cat under stormstar and aspenstar's rules). Feel free to jump in with a summerclan or nightclan cat!
The night was a gusty one, with occasional bursts of wind that made the leaves rattle in the trees. The world was a changing one above them, with reds and oranges and yellows peeking through the foliage, and it was changing around them, with the Nightclan occupation.
Times were changing, and Juniperdust had always been adaptable. It didn't matter if a Nightclan cat was to accompany them on the hunting patrol- she was determined to prove her mettle as patrol leader just the same. She sat by the exit to camp, forcing her tiredness down- she hadn't quite adjusted to the nocturnal schedule yet- and waited for the first of the cats to join her for their moonlit patrol.

Redflame walked over to the camp's entrance feeling strange about going out to hunt at night. She hated being told when she could go out and when she couldn't but she wasn't going to let it get her down. Someday she knew within her heart that this atrocity would be righted and she and her clanmates would be free once again. "Good evening," she meowed to Juniperdust. "This is going to be different, that's for sure. Don't prey sleep at night too?"
"I suppose we'll have to catch the nocturnal kind," Juniperdust said with a quiet laugh, glancing over at their guard before turning back to Redflame. "I think it'll just be the three of us tonight. Are you ready to go?"

It was Moonblight who was assigned to follow them today. The youngest of the Loyal Guards, he seemed rather unsure of how to act while supervising the group, some who were plenty older than he. For now, his discomfort had been well hidden, simply observing with his stony poker face as he gave Juniperdust a stiff nod. “I’m ready when you are,” he spoke, though he felt almost a little confused. Were patrols usually this small? This was probably why they needed NightClan to take care of them, he decided.
"Leaving without the main event?" The voice was warm and light, Heathfire arriving fashionably let per usual, and brushed past Moonblight. He glanced across at the Loyal Guard and, eyes twinkling, said, "I see NightClan values their guards for their looks and not their capabilities. Fresh out the nursery, pretty boy?"

Redflame smiled at Heathfire's jeer. It galled her to no end that they had lost their land and themselves to NightClan. "I'm ready," she replied. Then a thought crossed her mind. It would such a shame if Moonblight met with an unfortunate accident while they were out hunting. She gave her head a small shake. They'd probably blame them for it and punish them. Oh well, it was a nice thought though.
"Heathfire," Juniperdust greeted her brother with the first hint of a genuine smile. "Don't antagonize the child soldier they sent with us," she said under her breath, exchanging grins with her littermate before straightening up and speaking so everyone could hear them.
"Alright, we'll be heading out today to catch prey and restock our pile. I know you're guarding us, but we would also appreciate your help," she told Moonblight. "Since leafbare is coming and we'll need all the food we can get. I bet we can catch two or three apiece before we head back. Spread out if you need to, just come back to the group once you've caught a piece so we can pile them together."
With that, she set off into the forest, shivering as a particularly chilly gust tore through the underbrush. There were prey scents all around, and she set off after one, setting off after a robin that was feeding on some grass under an oak tree. The kill was swift and easy, routine as hunting had become to the warrior, and she turned back to the group to see how they were doing.

Redflame followed the others wondering how she was going to catch anything but a cold in the darkness. She was pleased she smelled a squirrel among the oak trees. However, her path led her away from the one Juniperdust followed. Feeling almost blind hunting in the dark, she carefully placed each paw down so as not to disturb her intended victim. It felt strange having to rely more on her hearing and sense of smell to locate the squirrel. Finally she was close enough to see it, a darker shadow against a dark background. Timing her pounce just right, she landed on the unfortunate creature and delivered a killing bite. Well, there's one, she thought surprised she had even been able to catch one.
Heathfire knew enough about his sister to know when she was playing at an angle. His smile reflected her own, regarding the NightClan guard with renewed interest but didn't needle him with any further taunts. "Juni is quite capable of handling herself," he said instead, "but I'm a terrible hunter. I think I need a guard to tag along with me." He tilted his head at Moonblight, anticipating the tom's response.

Moonblight knew he was the youngest of the Loyal Guard; he still had that fluffy look of a younger cat, his bright expression almost balancing out his intimidating form. It was easy enough to look intimidating for the young tom; he had always been large, the type who had found fighting a natural skill due to his size, but in reality, it was his incessant need to people please that made him both harmless and conniving at the same time.
He had gotten the impression that the SummerClan cats preferred to act as if he was harmless. It was better than being seen as a threat, he supposed. The tom immediately slipped into the impression they seemed to have of him; it was easy to confirm their biases after all. He gave them his wide-eyed look, full of surprise and childish innocence. His expression turned into a pout. "I-I uh," he stammered over his words carefully, as if giving them the impression that he was just a bumbling, clumsy young tom, "I graduated a few moons ago, but I know how to hunt and fight too, you know."
There was something about Heathfire that made him somewhat uncomfortable, and he was almost preparing himself for some kind of rebellion from this one, but he feigned ignorance, giving the cat a nod. "Sure...what do you need help with?"
"Great!" Heathfire's voice was bright, unaffected by Moonblight's reluctance. Kids were so easy to ruffle, it was both cute and entertaining. He indicated for the guard to follow him with a flourishing wave of his tail, setting off in a direction where none of the prey would have been disturbed by the nearby successes of their patrol. "I'm not very fast, to be honest," he disclosed behind a sheepish smile. Juniperdust was the prodigy of their litter, her mind as sharp as her claws and skill in combat, and Mallowmusk was keen and observant; he was always the one lagging behind, swept up on the tailwinds of their progress.
So when he said he wasn't proficient, it wasn't a lie, more an omission of the full truth. Heathfire, if pushed, could rival either sister in terms of ability, but he was woefully unmotivated to do so. This situation was no different. What he told Moonblight, who was also putting on a doe-eyed front, was just his own form of manipulation, presenting himself as weaker than he was to disarm others. "I think I smell a rabbit," he said, tasting the air, "Why don't you circle around ahead and run it back this way? I'll wait here and ambush it."
"Good catch," Juniperdust told Redflame with a smile, adding her robin to the two-piece pile they'd started. She turned, stifling the urge to roll her eyes at her brother's antics, before creeping off a short distance away and scenting the air again. There was the earthy aroma of a chipmunk nearby- small, but it would do. It took her a few moments to stalk to where it was rummaging in a layer of fallen leaves, and she pounced, bringing the small body back and adding it to the pile again.
"You better catch at least one thing, Heathfire," she mumbled under her breath, searching for the warrior in the moonlight.

"Thanks," Redflame meowed, dipping her head. She was pleasantly surprised at how easy it seemed to catch prey in the dark. Already their patrol had caught three different kinds. "Well, I better get back to work instead of just gawking," she said. "I'm going to try my luck over this way." She started to walk deeper into the woods.

Moonblight seemed a bit unsure still. Hunting was never his strong suite and he didn't really know why he had to participate but he supposed...if they were going to be NightClan soon...
With a sigh and a nod, he disappeared into the underbush, searching for the rabbit that Heathfire was looking for. It was actually the rabbit who had found him, because moments later, he was racing after it, trying to herd it back to the direction of the other cat.
(keep up the momentum guys! I hope to end this thread by 10/31!)
Juniperdust scented another squirrel easily enough- the forest was practically teeming with them- and tracked the trail scent, trying her best to ignore the racket going on behind her as Heathfire and Moonblight tried to corral the rabbit. The squirrel heard the commotion and started up the tree trunk, but Juniperdust sank her claws into it before it could get very far.
Padding back, she dropped her last piece of prey on the pile, sitting and waiting for the return of the others.

Redflame kept alert as she walked deeper into the woods. She thought it was odd there was no birdsong in this part of the woods until she remembered birds didn't sing or fly at night. Well there goes my plans, she thought ruefully for she had hoped in finding a plump pigeon. The thought crossed her mind about climbing into a tree to see if she could find a sleeping bird but she dismissed the notion. No way was she going to climb in the dark.
She sat under the tree listening for any sounds of prey then all of a sudden she heard a flapping noise. It was soft at first but gradually grew louder as whatever it was came closer. Surprised, she listened intently. That's no bird but whatever it is, it's flying. It was almost upon her before she saw it. She jumped into the air and clapped her paws together and came down with something between them. She gave it a quick bite to kill it then she examined it. "Well I'll be!" she exclaimed out loud. "It has wings! A flying mouse! Wait till the others see this!" She carried her flying mouse back to the collection pile and placed it on top.
Just as soon as the gray flash escaped Moonblight, the rabbit found itself at the sharp end of Heathfire, slaughtered before it could register its fate. "Good hunting. We make a good team," he complimented, giving the other tom a cheeky wink.
That wasn't the story he intended to pass on, however. By time the two of them rejoined Redflame and Juniperdust, any comraderie he may have shown to the guard had bled out of him, much like the carcass bouncing limply in his jaws, and his pelt was intentionally askew. He gave his sister a withering glance and shook his head, setting his spoils into the pile before snarking, "NightClan seems to want us to starve with the help they're sending us. Chased this thing the entire opposite way from me."

Moonblight had only felt his ears warm at the compliment, and it had soon disappeared as they re-entered the scene. Of course, he didn't trust these SummerClan cats for a reason. "Yeah? I can see why they left you out of the hunt," Moonblight's whiskers twitched in amusement as if he was in on the joke, "let's hope your sister's better than you if you don't want SummerClan to starve."
He didn't seem to care about any of these cats. "You've caught your prey," his ear flicked once, "come on, let's get going already."
"So that's three for me, two for Redflame, one for Heathfire, and zero for the Nightclan guard- or half for each of the toms, if you want to count it that way," Juniperdust said dryly looking over the pile once more. At least it was enough to feed a decent number of cats. She picked up her own pieces of prey, watching as the others did the same, and started off towards camp.
Once they'd all deposited the freshkill, she turned, nodding to indicate they were all free to go, if they so chose to.

(End of thread?)
Redflame picked up her catch, the squirrel by a leg and the flying mouse by a wing. The latter was on top so she could show it off as she carried it. She imagined showing it to the kits and the elders back at the camp and seeing their reactions.
(If you haven't guessed it, the flying mouse is really a bat!)
