Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
It was a rare day when Lark left Post Kilo, but she was in dire need of a walk. Tykes had been sicker with the cold weather, and she had been up since the early hours tending to a particularly young one. The air had seemed to become stifling over time, and she needed to get out of the post for a bit. So now, the lithe calico she-cat wound through the tunnels in an absent-minded fashion, hearing distant conversations and faint noises down side tunnels.
It had been a natural choice for her, being a Raiser. She lacked the necessary skills to be a Mercenary or a Scout, and she had trained briefly to become a Guider, until she lost her own kits. The memory still haunted her, and a grimace twisted her features as she remembered the four stillborns she had delivered, almost nine moons ago. The pain crept in again, and she shook away the memory. At least as a Raiser she tended to kits, even if she couldn't have her own. She was so lost in thought by the time she reached an intersection that she didn't notice the other cat until she ran into them. "Oof! Sorry!" She squeaked, looking up.
Reisi took a step back when he felt someone run into him. He had been wandering the tunnels lost in thought. It was just what the young tom did when he wanted time to think. Perhaps he should have been paying attention to what was in front of him though. "It's alright. I probably should have been paying attention as well." He offered Lark a small smile. "Are you alright?"
“Oh, yes! I’m fine. I hope I didn’t hurt you.” Lark glanced up at Reisi and then back to her shuffling feet, trying to squash her embarrassment. She didn’t recognize this tom, and she worked with mostly female Raisers, so this was an unusual situation for her in multiple ways. The calico shifted her weight again, feeling the silence stretch out as she looked for something to say. “I’m Lark. I’m a-a Raiser over in Post Kilo.” She forced herself to raise her amber eyes to his, offering a faint smile in return.
(Sorry I've been sick so I've slept for the past several days cx)
"I've seen you around I believe." Honestly, the young tom was surprised that there was someone here that didn't recognize him as his father's namesake. It was a pleasant surprise though so he had no intentions of bringing that particular topic up. "My name is Reisi though." She seemed a bit nervous. Perhaps she wasn't used to being outside of Post Kilo? He knew some Raisers rarely left Post Kilo. "Were you on your way to the surface?" He knew this was one of the tunnels that led up to the surface if you turned at the intersection ahead of them, but perhaps she had just been wandering the tunnels like him. Either way, he might as well accompany her. A pleasant conversation was something he needed to get his mind off of things.
(no worries! c:) In all honesty, Lark hadn’t been to the surface in over a year and a half- it held unpleasant memories of her life before Renegade Regime. So she wasn’t exactly sure why she confirmed Reisi’s suspicion- perhaps she was looking for an excuse to latch on to. “Yes, I was heading up to get some fresh air.” She looked at the tom for a moment longer- he seemed familiar, but she couldn’t quite place the name or the face. “You can come too- I mean, if that’s where you were headed.” Lark wanted to kick herself- she had never been relaxed around toms since the events of the previous year, and she didn’t interact much with cats of different positions than her. “Are you a mercenary?” She asked, not realizing she’d spoken the question outside of her head.
"I was really just going for a walk. I don't mind coming along though. I could use a bit of fresh air myself." Her next question threw him off a bit. He supposed not everyone would be aware of each other's ranks in the Regime, especially the Raisers who spent the majority of their time in Post Kilo. "Yes, I am a mercenary." He had turned his paws to head in the direction of the surface. "It's probably better we ran into each other anyway then. Things are still tense with BrookClan at the moment. I'd hate for you to be alone out there if they started causing trouble." Of course they hadn't caused trouble for a while, but most everyone was still on edge.
Lark shuddered slightly at the thought, glancing back down at her feet. "You probably should come then. I... I'm pretty bad at fighting, in all honesty." She smiled her first genuine smile. The calico she-cat had learned to be okay with her weaknesses, though admitting it to a mercenary was a little embarrassing. "I started off as a mercenary cadet when I got here, but they realized it wasn't for me." As she spoke, she found herself shifting into motion, moving towards the tunnel that would carry them to the surface. This was easier- she didn't have to look at him as much when they were walking.
"I'm glad you found a path that suited you before you. Switching ranks can be tough on a soldier, but if it makes you happy in the end, it's worth it. Reisi was honestly more relaxed at the moment. He wasn't thinking of his own troubles for once and was casually talking with a fellow soldier. Perhaps today was going to be a good day for him after all. "BrookClan hasn't caused trouble since they tried to invade the tunnels. Perhaps they learned their lesson the first time." He was trying to help ease the tension he could still feel at this point. He really just wanted to have a nice conversation and perhaps make a new friend.
"Hopefully they did." Lark held back another grimace- though her loyalty lay with the Regime, she had never understood the intense rivalries between the groups. She glanced at Reisi covertly, feeling a tinge of relief that he didn't seem to find her incompetent. Cautiously she spoke again. "I transferred twice, if you can believe it. Mercenary to guider to raiser. I finally found my calling with the tykes." An unmistakable tone of warmth colored her voice as she mentioned the little ones. "I wasn't cut out for fighting, but I really respect everything you do for the Regime. It keeps us safe."
"No one should have to stay where they feel they don't belong. If you are happier as a raiser, that is where you should be" He couldn't imagine being stuck in Post Kilo all the time, but he understood that was a path that some had to take. Otherwise there would be no caretakers for their little ones. "You know, you should smile more. It suits you." He offered her a small smile. They were approaching the tunnel entrance now. "It feels like it's a bit chilly out. We probably shouldn't stay out too long." He did enjoy walking above ground every so often though so even if she wanted to take a prolonged walk, he wouldn't mind all that much.
"I don't mind the cold, my fur keeps me warm." She said, after taking a moment to reflect on the compliment. She could feel the brisk air from the circular entrance ahead, but she was excited for something other than the somewhat stale air of the tunnels. "It's been a while since I've been up here- how often do you come to the surface?" The wind grew stronger as she spoke, stirring her lengthy calico pelt.
"Not often honestly. I usually only come up here if I'm patrolling or escorting someone." He preferred to keep to the tunnels. "We have most everything we need in the tunnels and that is where I feel most at home honestly." He kept pace with Lark now as his gaze wandered around to inspect their surroundings. "Do you like it above ground?"
"I do. I used to live up here, actually." She closed her eyes for a moment to breathe in the fresh air, enjoying the faint warmth of the sun. "I spent the first few months of my life on the surface, so I feel like I have two homes." Her amber eyes opened again, turning to look at her companion, suddenly a little embarrassed at the admission.
"That's understandable I suppose." While Reisi had been born in the tunnels, he knew that one of his close friends had been born on the surface as well. He didn't see anything wrong with it really. "I know of a few cats in the Regime that enjoy coming out here often. I've even had to escort a few of them every so often." Mostly he was thinking of Jasmine. She enjoyed the surface more than most in the tunnels, but at the same time he knew that she would never leave them for the surface no matter how much she enjoyed her time there.
"I appreciate your company, then. I've been a little fearful of venturing to the surface by myself, since I'm not very good at fighting." Lark let her gaze wander to the trees, sparse and dead in the leaf-bare sun. "You were born into the Regime, then?" She attempted to continue the conversation, since she still didn't know much about her companion.
"Yes I was. My mother is Veteran Astrid and my father was Commander Reisi." As time went by, it was easier to speak of his father. While he had been murdered before Reisi's birth, he had spent most of his life living in his father's shadow, but he was sure his siblings had felt the same way. Each of them seemed to be finding their place in the Regime however. "You are the new Raiser Superior correct? Congratulations on your promotion." He looked ahead once more. He was pretty relaxed for the most part despite their conversation topic.
"Thank you!" Lark purred lightly, winding her way through some of the more prickly underbrush. "It came as a surprise to me. Working with the tykes comes very easily to me, and I love them dearly, but I am one of the younger Raisers. And wow- the son of a former Commander. I didn't know that I had the honor." She smiled at him, whiskers twitching with amusement.
Reisi smiled. "Being Commander Reisi's son isn't really as special as some would make it out to be. After all, I never even had the chance to meet him. He was murdered before my siblings and I were born." It didn't bother him as much as some might think it should. He couldn't really miss someone he had never met. While he did respect his father for who he was and the stories he had heard, he was much more interested in making his own place within the Regime where he would be judged by his own actions. "And age doesn't really play a factor in what you can achieve. After all, Commander Mars isn't all that old. He's the same age as Raiser Venus." Reisi smiled. "It depends on effort really. Well, effort and skill."
