"AHHHHHHHHHH IT HURTS!" Pixiepaw screamed at the top of her lungs as a couple SunClan Warriors carried her up the the High Priestess's den. The tortoiseshell she-cat's paws were singed to the bone and she had various other burns all over her body. She was in bad condition and, to make matters worse, the stress of her injuries had triggered contractions. The young mother was on the verge of miscarriage, "HELP! HELP..."
"Someone get Littlecr---star! Hurry!" Valleyrose commanded, her sunstone eyes full of concern. She wished there was something she could do, and perhaps there still was, but as it stood she knew very little about how to use herbs, just how to obtain them, "Calm down, honey, help will be here soon."
Her soothing voice, however, did little to calm the dying apprentice. Pixiepaw just kept on screaming.

The silver High Priestess had been in a deep sleep, her tail curled over her nose in her nest. It had been nearly non-stop work since her return, and this was one of the few occasions in which she had been able to take a small amount of time for herself to try and rest and recover from her own injuries when the cats came bursting into her den screaming. She forced herself to her feet, darting out to see the burned apprentice screaming her head off with sides rippling. She muttered a curse, before making her way over with her paws skimming over the young cat's side. She was in labor, but in her current state she wouldn't make it through the kitting, not to mention the fact that the kits were also far to young "Pixiepaw, you are in labor" she mewed sofly, trying not to scare her any worse than she already was "I have to stop it from progressing, your body won't be able to handle the stress of kiting in it's current state"
Luckily with Valleyrose's help, their herb garden had been slowly replenishing. It was slow going, but far quicker than it would have happened naturally. WIth so many pregnant apprentices, she had already prepared for just such a scenario even though supplies were limited. She grabbed some Narcissus petals to help with the pain and clear her mind, some lavender stems to help with shock, and belladona to help stop the contractions. It was a shot in the dark, all she could do was administer the herbs and hope that they did their job "You need to eat these" she ordered calmly, holding them up to her leaves up to her lips ready to force them down if she had to
Pixeipaw was too busy screaming her head off the eat the herbs - it was pretty apparent that she was being ruled by pain and not logic. There was no point in trying to talk to her.
"I'll hold her still for you..." Valleyrose mewed timidly, putting her pwas down on either side of the young max. Lately she'd been feeling more and more like a nurse which wasn't much of a problem for her, but she didn't care for moments like these when those she was helping acted like she was hurting them, "... I think she needs some poppy seeds* first to calm her down...'
*I know poppy seeds aren't good for preg cats, Valley doesn't xD
"She can't have them" she replied, taking one paw and prying the apprentice's mouth open and shoving the herbs deep into her throat, before shutting her muzzle and gently blowing into Pixiepaw's nose to make her swallow the leaves that she had prepared "But why I have given her should help" it wouldn't take effect immediately "But we need to keep her as still as possible so that she doesn't injure herself worse. I have an idea... While i'm holding her, see if you can put some of her salve on any of the burns she opened up" with so many burns on her body it was going to be difficult to hold her without causing some damage. Littlestar slipped into the nest beside of the thrashing apprentice, giving her something to push against. She wrapped her paw gingerly over the unburrned area of her rounded tummy, and began grooming her ears down to her scruff before grabbing it firmly between her jaws to steady her.
Even while hurting, a cat's body couldn't help but to go limp while being held by the scruff. She could still flinch and wiggled, but it would stop the wild thrashing long enough for the herbs to take effect. She couldn't talk with her mouth full of fur, so instead she hummed a lullaby that she had once sang to her own kits.
Pixiepaw swallowed the herbs on the first try but continued to thrash until Littlestar gently scruffed her. The young she-cat was still clearly distressed, but her movements were little more than twitches and sudden jerks, nothing that one cat couldn't manage by herself. It made it easy for Valleyrose to apply the salve which she did swiftly, giving special care to Pixiepaw's paw pads, most of which had reopened and were oozing a mixture of blood and puss. It broke her heart to see one so young in such a hopeless predicament especially since she had no family left in the Clan.
"How long until it takes effect?" Valleyrose asked when she was done, but it wasn't like Littlestar could answer, her mouth was full of tortoiseshell fur...

As the movements eased, so did her grip on the apprentice's scruff. Until finally she released it, and settled back down to ease the burning in her own muscles "It's stopped for now" she replied, so that both of them could hear her words "but now that you have went into labor once it is only a matter of time before it happens again. The herbs are like applying a cobwebs over a wound, it helps short term but does little to solve the problem. Until these kits are born, I don't want you doing anything but eating and resting to help your body recover. Any stress on your body could trigger it to happen again, and these herbs can only hold it off for so long"
She licked the apprentices ears soothingly, knowing that she must be scared right now. There was no family that she could bring in to help care for Pixiepaw, no one that she could lean on for support "I'm going to be starting you on a mixture of strengthening herbs in addition to your salve, and you will be staying here for now so that I can keep a close eye on you" she took in a deep breath "Look I know you are scared right now, and I wish I could promise you that you are going to be ok. I can't in good conscious do that, you need to know how serious of a situation you are in. Your body is really weakened from the burns, and you are way to young to be carrying these kits without your other issues. Right now your body won't be able to withstand giving birth, but it also won't be able to carry them to full term or they will be to big for you to birth. At some point in the near future, we are going to have to make the decision to induce your labor once you are strong enough to handle it. It's risky, but it is the only way to get both you and your kits through this"
Valleyrose stepped away from the High Priestss and her charge, twiddling her paws together as she waited for her next command. She didn't think she was needed here much longer plus Littlestar intimidated her. Could anyone blame her for that? For many, many moons, Valleyrose had served Bloodycrow more closely than most. She didn't see him as the monster many did but she also knew that he was wrong. It made things... difficult. Her loyalties were questioned. At heart, all she wanted to do was make SunClan happy by whatever means she could, regardless of who was leading it.
"Do you need anymore help, Littlestar?"

Pixiepaw moaned softly and nuzzled her head into the crook of Littlestar's neck. She was feverish, suggesting she may have some sort of infection, but it also wasn't hard to believe that she wasn't just hot from a combination of her burns and recent labor, "I want my mama..."

Littlestar shook her head, grateful for the she-cat's head "Can you check in on the others?" she questioned softly. Having a feeling that she was going to be here for a while.
Instead of leaving, Littlestar stayed close to the apprentice. Drawing her in close as if she were one of her own children "Shhh, just close your eyes" she began grooming her, keeping away from the tender areas in an attempt to get her to relax and rest "I'm not your mother, but I going to do my best to get you through this" There was so many things that she needed to be doing, and yet she couldn't leave this she-cat here scared and alone. Everything else would just have to wait a while. She couldn't go back and change the wrongs she had committed, she could start by at least helping this cat and her kits. She began to sing softly, the same lullaby that she used with her own kits. It had always helped them sleep, and right now Pixiepaw needed rest more than anything else.
Valleyrose nodded, happy to be relieved, and quietly exited the den.

Pixiepaw whimpered but didn't say anything as she was lulled into a drug-induced sleep in Littlestar's embrace. It had been far too many moons since she had been held so closely to another cat like this and she didn't realize how empty she had felt up until now. She'd pretended that the loss of her family was no big deal, but now she realized that all she really did was postpone her grief. She'd idolized Bloodystar, been a founding member of his fan club, hooked up with a stranger and gotten pregnant, all of which she thought would fill the hole in her heart and for awhile it did... or, at least, it seemed to. With Bloodystar gone and the fan club disbanded or worse, all she was left with now were regrets and a belly full of kittens that she didn't know the first thing about raising.
"The Sun God..." She murmured restlessly as she drifted in and out of sleep, "... I don't think he really has a plan for me... after all..."
