Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The black and white tom sat in the middle of camp, where a rather large puddle had formed. He had no idea where it came from, but he stared deeply into the dark water. Puddlepaw reaches a paw out and disrupts the calm surface, pushing his paw into the water until it hits the bottom. It wasn’t very deep, no higher than where a knee would be on a child.
In a burst of glee, he hops into the puddle, laughs echoing through the cave.
“That’s really not a good way to be spending your free time,” a voice drawled from the shadows. Amber eyes glowed like harvest moons from its depths, pupils narrowed into slits. A huge, pale paw poked out of the shadows, pulling a long grey tabby body out after it. Wolfriot drew his massive form out before the apprentice, his claws gouging into the earth below his paws.
The voice startled him and he stood statue straight, the young cat turning quickly to stare the other male straight in the eyes. His breath had caught in his throat so he takes a second to compose himself. "I suppose not." he mumbles, looking sadly down at his paws. Frankly, Puddlepaw was lonely. His brother was always off with his training partner, and his two partners didn't seem the slightest bit interested in him. The puddle had brought a sense of joy to this newfound ache of solitary. "Sorry if I bothered. Won't happen again." the male dips his head in respect to the older warrior.
A small frown pulled down the corners of his lips as Wolfriot looked the young tom over. Looking up at the sky to judge the time, Wolfriot figured it was time to get up and start doing things anyway. Rolling his shoulders, he looked back down at Puddlepaw and cracked a smile. "Seems it's time to be productive for the day, why don't you join me on a hunt? Your mentor doesn't seem to be around, I could show you a thing or two."
Puddlepaw tilts his head in a questioning manner, not rudely, but curious. He then nods, giving the warrior a smile. “Yeah, okay. I’m up for it.” The small tom shakes his paws a bit, getting the last bits of water off them. “Aspenstar’s been busy. She has to go to Swiftclan to make a treaty or somethin’”. Puddlepaw couldn’t remember exactly what his mentor had said, but he knew he was on his own for the next few days. Maybe he could impress his mentor and the other two girls with his newfound skills. “I’m ready when you are.”!
Wolfriot didn't like the fact that Aspenstar was going to be gone; the camp felt empty without it's leader. Especially with her going into enemy territory. It didn't matter if she was going there to negotiate a treaty, it was still enemy territory.
Shaking away his worries, Wolfriot looked at the apprentice and grinned. He'd yet to have an apprentice of his own, so this should be fun. "C'mon then," he meowed, flicking his thick tail happily behind him. With a jerk of his chin, he motioned for Puddlepaw to follow and headed out of camp.
Puddlepaw didn’t really think as much of it as the other tom did, but then again, Puddlepaw was kind of clueless. Sometimes, even though he’d never admit it, he would’ve rather slept in than go out to do anything at all. However, that was possibly depression speaking. In his short lifespan, he didn’t know much of anything except disappointment. Dead parents, brothers who were off doing their own thing, no friends to really be at his side. His warrior name should just be Puddleloner at this point.
But now, for whatever reason a warrior had taken interest to help him out. The cream colored tom follows Wolfriot, tail trailing behind him almost like an excited kitten’s. “Gotta be careful, Loyal Guard said there might be a loose two leg dog.” Puddlepaw remarks almost nonchalantly. “Larkspur and Violetglass were supposed to check it out but I dunno if they got to it yet.”
Nodding at the apprentice's comment, Wolfriot remembered hearing about that. "If we see or smell anything we can just go up into a tree," he replied, hoping that it wouldn't be the case. The last thing he needed was to be out with a young cat and one of them get hurt - or worse, dead. "You have had climbing practice, yeah?" He didn't think Aspenstar would let her apprentice be unskilled, but Wolfriot didn't know how far along in training Puddlepaw was.
"Sounds good!" Just like that, he was the chipper little fellow he'd been as he was splashing in the puddle. His demeanor had changed for sure as they left camp. "I probably can. The girls know how to that's for sure." Puddlepaw was moons behind his training than his two training partners, but in his defense, he'd been tossed into an already established group. He was a newly made apprentice, maybe reaching about a half moon of apprenticeship.
Wolfriot cracked a grin at the young tom, feeling a bit of kinship to the apprentice. He remembered when he was young, with too big paws and an attitude to match. "So what's it like being the apprentice of the Clan leader?" Wolfriot asked, while his eyes scanned the shadowed forest around them. That's one thing he always tried to be aware of was their surroundings, no matter who he was with.
"It's alright." Puddlepaw shrugs, glancing around them for any sign of danger as well. His short lifespan had been full of searching and being ready for danger. It was quite sad, honestly. "She's been seriously busy so I've been training more with the other loyal guard than her so far. She said we're training together soon though!" Ah, the forgotten brother. Skunkpaw was a prodigy, whereas Puddle just got left in the dust. "also said somethin' bout needing more mentors."
"I know they're hoping to add more to the loyal guard," Wolfriot nodded, slowing his trot to a walk to keep pace with the young tom. While he didn't think it was the most efficient way to train the young ones, he wasn't going to question Aspenstar's decision on these things. "What all have you learned so far? Any certain type of prey you would like to tackle?" A cocky grin spread across his maw as he looked at the young tom over his shoulder.
"Still learnin!" he chirps, padding alongside Wolfriot. "I know I gotta make sure the wind is coming my way or the prey will smell me before it sees me. "I've caught a mouse before." he wondered if his brother had caught a mouse before. Probably. Puddlepaw wasn't as driven as his brother was, but a lot of that came from self doubt.
It brought such joy to Wolfriot to listen to the young tom, his thick tail curling up in delight. Being with Puddlepaw made him ache for an apprentice of his own, ambition to be part of the Loyal Guard running through the tom even more.
"A mouse, eh?" the larger tom asked with an arched brow, looking the apprentice over. "I think we can work with that." Once they came to a small clearing, Wolfriot turned swiftly to Puddlepaw and dropped into a crouch with ease, his large body moving with a skill that was honed over moons of training. "Show me what you know."
Puddlepaw drops into a crouch, mirroring the older warrior. He opens his ears for any flickering around them, closing his eyes as he takes a deep breath in. The forest around them was earthy and familiar, the newleaf prey bountiful in the brush. He listens for which way the wind was blowing, feeling it's gentle tug at his fur. Puddlepaw moves with the wind until he faced it, allowing the scents on the breeze to come to him. Slowly, the young tom inches forward, careful not to brush past anything that would alert the animal of his coming.
Suddenly, he spots the squirrel. Blue eyes narrow as hindquarters waggle, before the apprentice bursts with claws out. He catches the squirrel swiftly by the neck, a quick snap sounding through the forest. He drags the squirrel back to Wolfriot, a prideful grin on his face. This was his best catch by far, and it had come so naturally to him.
Wolfriot had watched the apprentice with interest, making notes on what to critque him on. But that was before the scent of the squirrel wafted by. He was surprised to see the young tom pick up on it so quickly, and even more impressed to watch his hunt and make the kill. When Puddlepaw brought his prize back to him, Wolfriot let out a yowl of approval.
"Well done!" he exclaimed, giving the squirrel an appreciative sniff. "That was almost perfect, I couldn't have done better myself. It takes a seasoned hunter to go from training to focused like you did."
Puddlepaw beamed under the senior warrior’s praise. “You mean it?” Puddlepaw’s mind was filled with self-doubt and performance anxiety. He didn’t feel as though he sized up to his brothers, or any of the other apprentices in the den.
He looks at the squirrel, pride running through his veins. This could easily feed two cats, maybe a queen and her kittens. “Thank you for coming out with me.” He says genuinely, his eyes holding a hint of sadness behind them. He missed his brothers.
Wolfriot gave the young tom a grin, dipping his head. "Of course I mean it," he replied with a wave of his tail. Giving the smaller tom a nudge Wolfriot said, "You need to think better of yourself! You miss 100% of the shots you don't take, so just go for it!" He could feel the sadness radiating from the apprentice, a little prick hitting his heart at the thanks he was given. "Of course, I will take you out any time you want," he promised.
