Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. Brakenhawk strode out of the warriors den, elegantly, placing each white paw silently to the ground. He eyed the fresh-kill pile, his stomach growled and his mouth watered. He stretched each leg in turn before giving his tabby brown fur a good shake. He knew he had to hunt before he could eat but the fresh-kill pile looked so appetizing. He ignored the temptation of devouring a fresh piece of prey and headed for the camp entrance. He figured he might az well go hunting for his clan and didnt mind if anyone bothered to join him or not.

"Hungry?" Stonefang asked as he padded up to his clanmate. "I know I am," he admitted. "I didn't eat yesterday because the pile was so low." He didn't need to tell Brakenhawk why. Every cat knew prey was scarce during Leafbare and many of the warriors did without so that the kits and elders could eat. "Mind if I join you on your hunt? Perhaps we could bring in a feast today."
Brakenhawk turned to greet his clanmate as he padded up. What Stonefang said was true. Prey was scarce this time of year and now that he thought about it, his last meal was yesterday morning. "Of course I'm hungry. The whole clan is hungry" he responded, his sky blue eyes holding the pain he felt for his clan. "But I definitely accept that challenge!" He added, cheering up a bit. "Lets bring a feast!"

"Birds are still plentiful," Stonefang meowed thoughtfully. "Let's start hunting in the maple trees on the north side of this mountain." He glanced at the mountain near the camp. He thought of how proud he'd be if the two of them brought in a bumper catch.

"Alright," Stonefang meowed as he trotted out of the camp. He followed a well worn trail heading north. How many generations of cats have padded this way? he wondered as he walked.

"My pleasure," Stonefang meowed. "I was wanting to hunt anyway and hunting with two cats is always better than hunting alone." The path around the mountain curved north and he spotted the maple trees. From this distance he noticed small specks flying from tree to tree. "Look, there are some birds over there."
Brakenhawk pricked his ears at the sight of the birds. "Good eye" he complimented his clanmate. "How do you want to do this? Should we just go for it or should we go in as a team?"

Stonefang thought for a moment before replying. Teamwork always worked well when hunting rabbits or squirrels. One cat would act as a flusher while the other would make the actual catch. But birds were entirely different from ground creatures. They were easily spooked and would take to the air to escape. "Birds scare easily and fly away," he meowed as he watched the birds from a distance. "Unless you know a way to work as team to catch these birds, we better hunt individually." He hoped Brakenhawk knew of a method where they could work together. He always like learning new ways of catching prey.
Brakenhawk thought for a moment before replying, "Unless you stand higher up and when I spook the bird, you can snatch it out of the air or bise versa. But I'm not sure if that would work."

Stonefang mulled over what Brakenhawk suggested and it sounded feasible. "I never thought about doing it that way," he meowed. "Want to give it a try?"

"How about I act as the flusher and you make the catch," he replied. It was Brakenhawk's idea after all so he should be the one to see if it'll work. "We can start over there." He was looking at the tree on the far right where there were a few birds pecking the ground looking for food.
"Good idea. I think I should stay in the tree. When you spook the birds, they will go to the tree first. I can catch one when they go to escape" he decided sneaking over to the tree, rounding on the birds. He dug his claws into the tree and crouched on a low branch and waiting for Stonefang to make his move.

Stonefang waited until Brakenhawk got situated in the tree before he started out. He moved stealthily at first until he got closer to the unsuspecting birds. I hope this works, he thought, as he tensed his muscles for a spring. Then with a signal of his tail to Brakenhawk, he lunged noisily into the hungry birds. With screeches of alarm, the whole flock took flight.
Brakenhawk braced himself when the birds flew in his direction. He leaped form the tree, claws extended and he hooked a bird out of the air and pinned it. He killed it with one killing bite. "It worked! But I feel like it was a little more effort than what its worth" he smiled, scraping dirt over the bird. "Want to see what else we can find? Not sure one small bird could feed the whole clan"

"I think I'll agree with you about the new technique," Stonefang replied. "And yes, I'd like to bring at least two birds in myself." He knew he could carry two by biting down on their legs and allowing the birds wings to drag along the ground. "Hey! Look over there," he meowed in a softer voice. There was a tree farther down that had several birds pecking on the ground. "I have an idea. Why don't we each stalk the birds but both of us come in from a different direction? We could make our strikes at the same time so we can each catch one." He had been disappointed that they were only able to catch one bird from this last tree.

"Oh, I don't know about that," Stonefang replied humbly. "You idea worked, didn't it?" They did have one bird and there were plenty more around to catch.
