Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Slits of setting sunbeams threw long shadows across the camp. Across it, Crow spied a starkly familiar white pelt-- too small to be Orchiddrop, but an almost carbon copy of her. "Hey sweetheart. What are you doing all by yourself?" Arriving next to her, he swiped a loving lick across Eveningkit's ear then sat beside her, casting his gaze to the deepening sky.
Eveningkit jumped slightly at her father's voice. She had been very focused on the task she had been on, and she couldn't help but be a little startled. Realizing it was Crow, she let out a purr. "Daddy!" she meowed with a smile, nodding her head to what she had been looking at. "I'm trying to teach Frank how to use an obstacle course! He's learning so fast!" She shifted so he could see the entire set up that she had created. There was a small caterpiller, presumably "Frank", lost in a maze of stones and sticks and anything else she could find. "He's not very good at it, though," she admitted, poking Frank off the stick he had crawled on. "Frank! I've told you twice that's now how we do it!"
As if noticing it for the first time, his head tilted quizzically, only for his lips to form a smile. "Have you tried giving him some treats when he does it right? Maybe Frank needs positive reinforcement " he suggested, and Crow used his tail to sweep some leaves towards them, shredding one with his claws and offering the scraps to his daughter.
She looked shocked at his suggestion. Treats? For Frank? That was such a good idea! Yet, she wasn't super familiar with the term he used. "Whats a positive reinforcement?" Eveningkit asked, not quite old enough to be able to piece togerher context clues. Waiting for him to respond, she took a tiny leaf shred and placed it in front of Frank, her gaze quizical. The caterpiller moved towards the leaves, and Eveningkit let out a squeak. "Is it workin, Dad?"
"Positive reinforcement," Crow began patiently, watching Eveningkit begin to piece the context together on her own, "is when someone does something good and they are rewarded for it. Like how we trained Firekit to stop biting other cats' paws." It had worked...relatively successfully, though a yowl from elsewhere in the camp assured him that they still had a ways to go with that obstacle.
Eveningkit nodded thoughtfully, quickly becoming distracted by a new train of thought. "Is that how mentors train? Positive reinforcement?" She would be moving on to an apprentice before too long, and she was nervous. "I heard that some of the mentors are so mean!" Of course, tales told to the kittens about apprenticehood from the actual apprentices were often an exaggeration at best, but Eveningkit didn't know that.
"Some mentors are very nice," her father confirmed, curling his tail around Eveningkit, "but there are some mean mentors out there." SummerClan certainly handled its training program much better than SunClan, and he shuddered to think of sweet Eveningkit enduring the training he went through with his brother, Agonywail of WinterClan. "I'll make sure you get a really good, really nice mentor, though," purred Crow, nuzzling her. "Do you think you'll become a warrior or Garden Keeper?"
