Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Solaris' ginger fur was fluffed against the bracing wind, the same wind that carried the faintest scent of badger. This spelled potential trouble for the League, so he had decided to detour from his usual hunting route to investigate. Bright sunshine sliced through bare branches as he wove through the undergrowth, mouth dropped open to follow the scent. The source had ended up being a rather deep hole, which he glanced at before deciding to grab reinforcements. No matter how immense and built he was, he wasn't stupid enough to track a badger alone. It took him a few more minutes to get back to the camp, weaving his way to where most of the Hunters were gathered. His half-ear flicked back as he spoke, his timbre deep and slow. "I found a badger hole east of here. Is anyone willing to look into it with me?" His tone was cordial and removed, his amber eyes glancing at each of the cats in turn.
Kotori was a sleek furred tom with a spiky neck and tail. He had a half white crescent moon shaped patch on his face with exotic green eyes. An outsider, but not unrelated to the league either, "Hey, I'll come. Renegade used to have to deal a lot with badgers when they'd get under ground so I could probably lend a paw."
In truth being apart of the league had been just as freeing as he thought it would be. But all the same he was just as lonely as he was in the Regime. He didn't know anyone in the league and those he did weren't his friends nor did they want to be. He found that he didn't attempt to fit in because he learned he didn't want to. He didn't fall into the psychotic category nor the deadly category or... He did, but he didn't want to fall into the deadly category. He killed more cats than most people in the league did and worse they had been his own family and double awful everyone knew about it. They knew how he murdered his own family and friends just to try to appease Vera's daughter who he had been madly in love with. Only for her to vanish. Now the love sick puppy had no one, but the freedom he wished for. The moment felt more than an opportunity to patrol, but more to attempt to make an actual friend.
Solaris blinked at Kotori, then dipped his head in acknowledgement, his mood still unreadable. No one else had spoken up immediately, so he acted off the assumption that it was just the other tom. "Sounds like a plan. Follow me." The towering ginger tom turned tail and moved swiftly towards the direction of the badger hole again. Solaris had grown up in the ranks of the League, and often seemed unaffected by the bloodthirsty attitude that reigned over the cats. He had killed plenty of his own enemies, but always out of necessity, never out of a sadistic urge for death. He took his time speaking, never lashing out, always biding and planning and musing. He had gained a good bit of respect in Primal Instinct, but still lacked many trusted friends. Perhaps growing up here, he knew the true nature of the outcasts that made up the League.
"Remind me of your name again." Solaris' rumbling voice rose as they headed into the undergrowth, turning his amber gaze once more to the tom. "You came from the Regime?"
"Yeah I did, I'm Kotori Eerie. My families half blood to the league so my cousin was actually born here, Senescence. My sisters also joining, she's a night walker right now, but with the whole lack of prey thing around here she hasn't been able to complete the final task. Hopefully she'll be able to soon though," Kotori said.
He knew... Enough about the league side of his family that they were well known in the league for not just a short while, but literal generations. Almost all of his cousins served as a proxy or an assassin. That his aunt and uncle both at one point were supposed to become nemesis, but under mysterious circumstances neither did. He only heard these stories as a warning to never be like that side of the family, yet here he was. He realized the tom might know about the Regime and might be realizing that he didn't have any fighting skills, "I was a Spy so for a while I was a bit useless to the league, but I can hunt now and I guess I'm good at fighting considering my kill count."
It wasn't something he liked to brag about, probably because he grew up with morals. But he often did throw around such an achievement in order to try to fit in or to ensure no one tried to mess with him.
"Even weaklings can kill." Solaris' gave his usual cryptic response, but a half smile graced his stony features as he listened to the toms' story. "My mother was born into the Regime, but left when she met my father. They went through the initiation process here, and I was raised here. You have to be half-decent at fighting to get into the League." Solaris left his own kill count unsaid- partially because some of them were for political purposes that he'd like to keep under wraps. He fell back into silence as he walked, then spoke again a few minutes later.
"So you dealt a lot with badgers, living underground? I can't say I've faced many in my lifetime."
Kotori glanced to the side, he was the last cat to get into the league before the initiation process was made. He never got beaten or humiliated or forced to be starved and dehydrated unlike his sister who followed him. Likely not to join the league and be with her twin brother, but to murder him for murdering her brother, sister, grandparents, a queen, injuring tykes... He hadn't exactly murdered criminals. It also didn't help that he got in by being boyfriend to Cyra. He got a free way in, he didn't earn anything except for maybe killing multiple people in an act of loyalty.
"Yeah, I'd encounter them a lot exploring the tunnels," Kotori nodded, returning the smile, it was nice to know the guy had Regime blood. Maybe they would be alike and he'd have someone to hunt with, "Usually I'd drive them out, I don't know if league cats kill them or something insane."
Solaris gave another half-chuckle. "We don't get a lot of badgers, in all honesty. I'm not in the mood to kill one either, so driving it out should suffice for today." The sun's watery rays drenched the forest floor as they approached the badger hole. "We're nearly there. The scent wasn't fresh, but I think it's still in the hole. How do you recommend approaching?"
Solaris was level-headed- unlike some League cats, and was willing to defer to someone (Kotori, in this instance) who had more knowledge than he. The only enemies he'd ever fought were cats, whom he could strategize against. He assumed badgers were different, and wasn't eager to charge into the unknown unassisted.
"In its den? Alright, that makes sense, they're nocturnal. We should mark our scent to try and lure the guy out faster and after we can see if we can jump on top of the den at the surface part of it. The badger should be able to feel those vibrations, but may take it as a threat and stay. In which case we may just have to wait it out. It's not good to corner an animal let alone a beast like that. If we're lucky the badgers old and a few good swipes of our claws should just make the badger leave on its own," Kotori explained.
After he watched the den for a minute later and determined the badger must be deeper inside he approached the hole and rubbed his body along the sides. He didn't know for certain if they were territorial creatures, but generally most creatures that lived underground were. Once the scent wafted of to the badger it maybe enough to encourage the badger to leave.
Solaris sat back on his haunches as the other tom worked, careful to keep alert in case the badger did decide to wake up immediately. His long ginger tail draped over his front paws as he assessed Kotori, an appraising look on his eyes. "You weren't kidding when you said you knew what you were talking about." He chuffed, turning his gaze back to the unmoving darkness of the hole. "Now we wait, I suppose. You're sure you don't have any other duties today?"
"Like what? I do my training every morning before the sun comes up. I like to get it out of the way, but that's how things were done at the Regime so I'm still used to it I guess," Kotori said sheepishly.
He didn't like looking back and realizing he was following the same routine and habits he had back home. The only person he really missed was his mom and absolutely no one and nothing else about the place. He walked up to the top of the mound and leapt on it wondering if the badger would come out. A last ditch effort, but when nothing happened he lied down on top of it and motioned for Solaris to come sit next to him. That way the badger would naturally exit away from them to give them time, "Why do you usually have a lot of duties?"
Solaris followed the tom's silent instruction, sinking onto his haunches beside Kotori, his amber eyes still trained on the exit of the badger hole. "I guess duties is the wrong word... plans is more appropriate. I hunt in the morning typically, and do fighting drills in the afternoon. Sometimes I train the trainees or the older younglings." This wasn't typical of every cat in the League- the fact that Solaris was a powerful fighter combined with his lack of inherent insanity meant he was a decent instructor, and sometimes in demand for training sessions.
"You'll be trusted more the longer you stay, if you prove yourself." He inclined his head to Kotori. "And it's fine if you have your own rhythm."
"I mean so far the psychotic cats like me. Probably because I scream and flinch and faint at blood and I'm kind of a wuss," He grinned with a bit amusement.
It felt nice to for once be truthful and just say he was a coward. He did react easily and if he had to face his fears he'd rather take the easy way out and turn the other way. But since his sister joined he felt braver. He felt relatively sure that if she got into trouble he'd be in trouble right along side with her.
"Yeah I've noticed they get no training. Like they have these mentors with no enthusiasm or will to train them anything. I guess that's why even though we have all these training sessions most of us don't get any stronger. Personally I think my diets interfering with why I'm not getting any stronger," Kotori admitted, or rather his lack of a diet.
Solaris cocked an eyebrow, faintly amused at Kotori's confession. "At least the psychotic cats have a playmate now." He chuffed after a moment, rolling back his shoulders. "I've seen the same thing- there's a lack of consistency in their training, which isn't good for the League. If we aren't strong we won't survive."
He thought for another moment, then turned to the tom. "If you want a real training session I'd be able to help. I'm a pretty good teacher, if I say so myself." Solaris also stood out among the cats of the League because of his tendency for altruism, wanting the best for Primal Instinct. If Kotori was a weak link, he was more than happy to assist.
"Really?" He smirked teasingly, "I thought all untouchables were weak. Alright, yeah. I'd totally be up for learning some battle moves, I could really use someone to teach me some moves out here. Anything you'd be willing to teach me I'd really appreciate. It's nice to know not everyone's a sadistic psycho out here."
He laid atop the badger den and pressed his ear down to the earth as if listening intently, "I can feel it stirring, shouldn't be-"
All of a sudden Kotori's eyes widened as he could feel the tremor of the ground of the badger getting up and moving to the exit. With a quick motion of his tail he signaled Solaris to move completely out of sight from the approaching predator.
Solaris returned the smile briefly, before slipping back into a solemn mood as the badger emerged. Broad shoulders drawn tightly back, Solaris slunk back among the trees, amber eyes focused on the lumbering creature.
"What's our plan of attack? Do we engage seriously or merely chase it out?" Solaris whispered in a low tone to his companion, his ginger frame held low to the ground.
