The very first rays of sun shone through the trees as it rose over the horizon, green eyes slowly blink open to see the world outside. A small smile graces Lavenderbreeze's lips. She looked around at the kits sleeping together, small chests rising and falling in a steady rhythm. As they grew, they needed her less and less. She loved her place in the clan, she loved working with queens and kittens. But it was undeniably lonely to be in this position as well. She watched queens get to tell their mates that they were expecting, she watched more births than she could count.
A soft sigh escaping her grey form, she decides to get up and leave the den. When she emerges from the den, the cold hits her quite quickly. Lavenderbreeze fluffs her fur, a shiver running down to her tailtip. She wasn't expecting it to be so cold this far into new-leaf. Shaking the thought, she settles near the middle of camp. She watched quietly as apprentices emerged to begin training for the day, and as warriors came in and out of the camp. Cats knew her as the doting nursery aid that didn't have anyone herself.
She places her head on her paws, watching the movement of everything going around her. Lavenderbreeze's heart ached. She felt alone.

The night’s hunting patrol returned to camp alongside the rising sun with three mouths full of fresh-kill and a fourth carrying something far less useful. Rhymingsilence had done his fair share of hunting too, but he left the others to carry his work back while he held a small stick in his mouth. At the very end of it, a little bug was holding on for dear life. As foolish as the sight was, the broad calico moved in almost slow-motion as he tried to keep the bug from falling. His eyes never left it’s tiny body as he crept across camp and he was far too preoccupied with it to notice the nursery aid lying down in his path.
With a gasp, he tripped over her side and flopped onto his stomach. The air knocked out of him on impact but worse of all was the loud snap of the twig beneath him. Oh no! Shooting back to his paws, Rhymingsilence stared down in horror at the broken stick and the splattered carcass of his little insect friend. For a moment, he pawed helplessly at the bug, praying it would be enough to bring it back to the living. Then he felt the presence of the very cat he tripped over, and spun around to face Lavenderbreeze.
A new fear filled him as he looked at the she-cat. They always made him nervous. In an instant though, his fear turned to concern. “I’m so sorry!” He exclaimed. “I wasn’t paying attention and- I didn’t hurt you, did I?”
Lavenderbreeze watched the patrol come in, knowing she'd likely need to bring one of the pieces of fresh-kill for the queens and their kits. Lavenderbreeze always made sure they were well fed and happy, even if it meant she didn't get much, or the worst of the pile. The kittens were most important always. She didn't want to bombard them, so she waited patiently, when her eyes catch Rhymingsilence with his stick. She was confused to say the least, but she was sure there was a good reason.
And then the next events came to her in slow motion. She didn't think that the calico wouldn't notice her, but as he came closer she only barely noticed the little bug. Due to her distraction, she wasn't prepared when the impact came. Luckily, it didn't hurt, but she heard the twig as well. Her green eyes widen as she watches the tom try to revive the little guy, her heart dropping to her stomach. She felt a bit guilty, like she'd gotten in his way by choosing that spot. "Sorry little bug" She thinks, before standing to apologize. Before she could get the words out, the other spoke.
"Oh, no! You're okay! I mean, are you okay? That was a loud fall." She tilts her head, looking him over. He wasn't bleeding at all... so maybe he was okay. Hopefully. "I'm- I'm sorry about your friend. I could help you find a resting spot for him." Lavenderbreeze genuinely felt awful. She didn't mean for the bug to get hurt, or the tom.

“Im fine I think,” Rhymingsilence quickly replied. He’d been too wrapped up by the death of his friend to take stock of his own condition. Now that he had a chance, he was 95% sure he was physically healthy. His emotional health had taken quite a toll though. “I think the stick cracking made the fall seem worse than was, really. But it’s my fault anyway so...” He trailed off as her bizarre offer processed in his mind—bizarre because no one had ever asked him something like that before. No one else seemed to appreciate the lives of bugs and their gentle souls.
What little he knew about Lavenderbreeze before told him she was nice, but now he knew she was way more than that. She wasn’t judging him, she wasn’t mad, and she wasn’t scolding him the way his sister used to. She just seemed, well, kind of wonderful. “Do you mean that? You’ll really help me? I mean you don’t have to,” he said as he pawed the ground anxiously. “You don’t owe me anything, but if you want to help...” It was probably inconsiderate of him to hope her words hadn’t been empty, but he was going to have to hold a funeral later and it would be nice to have another cat there with him.
Lavenderbreeze tentatively takes a step closer to Rhymingsilence, doing a quick check of the tom from a few steps away. She knew he’d said he was okay, but it was in her nature to be completely positive that anyone who could’ve gotten hurt, hadn’t. The grey cat pads over to the cracked stick, picking up the piece that hadn’t been near the passed little bug.
Frankly, Lavender hadn’t really known of Rhymingsilence at all, but if he wasn’t a kit, she likely didn’t know him. “Yeah, of course,” she gives a gentle smile, green eyes soft and understanding. After having worked with a million different personalities, she had no judgement for anyone. Everyone had different interests and passions. “I’d love to pay my respects. I mean, I’m part of the reason.” She gives her shoulder a quick lick. “Whenever you’re ready, we can find a spot for him.”

Rhymingsilence closed his eyes briefly to try to settle his nerves at her closer proximity to him. He liked her kindness. It reminded him of the only other she-cat that hadn’t completely scared him—Wistfuldancer. But they weren’t very close, so he never had time to work on his weird feelings around the opposite sex. He could tell Lavenderbreeze’s heart was in the right place though, so when his eyes reopened, they gleamed with a bit more confidence. “Thank you,” he mewed with a short dip of his head, “If you’re sure that you’re okay, I think I’d like to do this sooner rather than later. Now or anytime tonight if you’re busy.”
His initial instinct was to take the bug to the burial grounds, but since it was sacred to FallClan cats, he didn’t think that would be right. His next best idea was further out of camp though, and he wasn’t sure if a nursery aid would be up for something like that. As far as he knew, they rarely ever left camp. “I found him at the flower spot, so that might be a good place to say goodbye? What do you think?” Even without his anxiety eating him alive, he was hardly able to meet her eyes as he spoke.
Lavenderbreeze studies the tom with a careful gaze, watching as he seemed to gain a newfound confidence from when they’d began speaking. She gives a gentle and reassuring smile, wondering what was going on in his head. “I’m okay.” She purrs, giving herself a quick look over. “Not even a scratch.” She pricks her ears forward and flicks them back, thinking for a second. What was she doing before they’d crashed...? OH. “I just have to bring prey into the nursery. I’ll be quick.” She rushes past him, again, at a comfortable distance, grabbing the meatiest prey from the pile. Then she drops them off in the nursery to pad back to Rhymingsilence.
“I think that sounds lovely.” Lavenderbreeze says gently, tilting her head a bit. She noticed he had a difficult time with meeting her eyes, which sparked her curiosity, but she was polite enough not to question or to stare. He was right that she rarely left camp, so a change of pace was welcomed and appreciated. “I’m ready to go whenever you are, lead the way.”

His eyes followed after her as Lavenderbreeze retrieved prey and delivered it to the nursery. No matter how awkward and weird he could be, he could always appreciate a cat's strong work ethic and responsibility. Even if she was a nursery aid and all of her duties were outside his realm of understanding, Rhymingsilence knew the job was important and that there were some cats that failed to take it seriously. It was refreshing to see she wasn't among those few. He wasn't sure when the smile found its way on his face, but once he did he suddenly felt wholly embarrassed for it. Luckily, by the time she returned, he was more preoccupied with gathering the bug than anything else. He'd already managed to wrap it in a bundle of leaves and he picked it up in his teeth before turning over to her.
"Yes. I can do that!" the words came out a little too loud and he sent her an apologetic glance before trotting outside the camp's entrance. No matter how hard it was to talk, he felt the silence was even worse so he quickly broke it again. "It's not that far of a walk. It's just beside the lake and that's super close to camp. Sorry, I'm not sure if you know that or not. I don't really know much about nursery aids, but I only ever see you guys in camp most of the time. Not that that's a bad thing by the way. Uh, you all seem so busy and yeah..." The calico faltered for a moment as he tried to salvage whatever it was he was trying to say. "I didn't mean to ramble. Sorry. Just, what's it like?"
Her whole life centered around kits that were not her's by blood, but she loved just as fiercely as though they were. Sometimes, it was interesting how quickly instinct took over, how effortlessly she was able to mold herself into the mother figure that a kitten needed. Not to mention, how easily it spilled into all other walks of life. She was naturally nourishing and kind, and always ready to take care of someone else. However, this also came from her low self esteem. Lavenderbreeze wouldn't trade her place in the nursery for anything, but there was no denying she ended up there in the first place because she had never been cut out to be a warrior. Without the specific job of nursery aid, she wouldn't have a place in her clan.
Lavenderbreeze watches as the tom bundles up the little bug, and she grabs a small feather that had fallen from one of the birds of the hunting patrol. She'd leave it over his grave as a marking. As Rhymingsilence starts out of camp, she happily follows. The grey she-cat releases a purr of amusement, knowing that the tom didn't mean any harm by his rambling. "I have a vague memory of the outside of camp, but I wouldn't know how to get to the lake without someone leading me." She explains calmly, happy to see everything for what felt like the first time. Green eyes smile, matching the expression on her face. "You're okay," she purrs, thinking about exactly what she did. "I guess I haven't really had to put it into words before." She's quiet for a moment, pondering on how she could summarize her life. "My whole life is centered around making sure the queens are comfortable and kits are taken care of. I love it though. There's nothing sweeter than watching a little one grow from having their eyes completely closed, to becoming a warrior. I'm so proud to see them grow." There was a sadness behind her happy words though. "It's a little lonely." Lavenderbreeze admits quietly, looking down at her paws. "I've watched so many kits grow up, so many queens leave the den, but I've never had my own. I've always taken care of others." Quickly, she shakes her head out and allows her easy smile to return. "Sorry, didn't mean to trail off. Tell me about what you do." She asks, returning the curiosity of the other cat.

Rhymingsilence felt his chest tighten as he listened to Lavenderbreeze talk. It was as if he was speaking to an angel. Her heart was so pure and sweet, and it was more then clear to him how much she loved taking care of kits. He’d had a few interesting run-ins with some kits before, but he never once thought about having his own. To him, they were an impossible dream. He had such a hard time communicating with his clanmates or even approaching them about anything unrelated to patrols. The thought of forming a strong bond with anyone, most of all a she-cat was nearly unimaginable. Even now, he felt so out of place next to her. He knew he was strange and awkward, and it was only a matter of time before he really screwed up and scared her away. But he didn’t want to. Thinking about her passion for raising children and how they were never truly hers, it did feel lonely. And now that he really thought about, he started to see that he was lonely too.
“It’s okay. I can tell it means a lot to you,” he said, smiling to himself a little. “Being a warrior, it’s important, but it doesn’t feel as unique. I’m sure you know all about it, but I’m really proud of what I do. Hunting takes up a lot of my time, but I really shine in combat. I, well, I’m probably no where near the best in the clan, but I’m always training and working hard. I want to know that when the time comes, I’ll be able to protect everyone.” This specific topic really brought out a more confident side of Rhymingsilence. While he loved his insect-fascination, it always made him feel like a misfit. This was something he knew others could appreciate and he placed a huge amount of importance on the duty of serving his clan well. “You know, my sister used to be a nursery aid too, but she wasn’t around long enough for me to see her in action. She was a bit of a pawful, Etherealblink, a little too loud and overbearing, but being without her makes me regret not spending more time with her. I’m no good at making friends, but I always had one in her and... I guess that makes us both a little lonely.”
Breathing shakily out his nose, he slowly worked up the courage to look at her—really look at her. Up close and beautiful, the words momentarily caught in his throat. “Maybe we can be there for each other? As friends?” He felt like he didn’t need to add that last part, but if he had meant to suggest more, he knew there was no way in StarClan she’d ever say yes. And, he figured, that would be moving too fast in his tastes. But then, everything felt too fast in his life.
Lavenderbreeze felt similarly. Emotionally, she had a hard time connecting to anyone outside of the queens and kittens she took care of, and as they got older, they forgot about her and left her behind. She’d always figured she would never get to have kittens of her own to raise, because she spent all of her time in the nursery anyways. Besides Cinderslip and Wolfriddle, Lavenderbreeze was usually alone. But she was also shyer than she’d ever admit, finding it much easier to watch the world around her than take any part in it. But she likes this feeling she had, being around Rhymingsilence. It was gentle and it came easily, and the other was so kind.
“Being a warrior is honorable work, Rhymingsilence.” She gently reminds him, smiling as he speaks. She could hear the pride he held for his place in the clan, and the pride he held in himself for his skills. “Hopefully I’ll never have to see you use your skills, but I think I’d feel protected if we ever did need the protection.” The grey shecat gives an inquisitive look in the tom’s direction. “I don’t think I ever knew your sister,” she says after a moment. “But she sounds lovely. And it sounds like she loved you a lot.” The unspoken question of “what happened” lingered in her mind, but she didn’t want to pry. Maybe in the future, he’d be willing to tell her more.
Again, her easy smile falls across her face. “I think I would like that. Friends.” Lavenderbreeze feels warmth spread under her fur, like the first step into sunshine on a chilly morning. She’d never experienced something like that before from another’s words. Maybe they were moving a bit fast, but Lavenderbreeze hadn’t felt an easy connection like this with anyone else before. She wasn’t even this honest with Wolfriddle, and the two had been raised together until they broke into different training.

Hearing her agree made his heart soar in a way that startled him. It wasn't something he'd ever felt before, but he chalked it up to happiness and smiled easily. She hadn't even asked about Etherealblink, which was a huge relief. It was a hard topic for him to discuss, but he found that he wouldn't mind talking to her about it one day. If they really were to become good friends. What had started out as a horrible day was now becoming one of the best he'd had in a while. In the midst of their conversation, he'd almost completely forgotten about the bundle he carried, only fully remembering once they reached their destination.
"Here we are," he said, his smile falling somewhat as he took in the scenery. Filled with luscious vegetation and bright flowers of every color, it was a prime spot to gather a variety of insects and well, herbs. He led the way further into the area until he reached a group of purple coneflowers. "Well, this is where I found him."
She closes her eyes and breathes in the scent of the flowers and the herbs, feeling at ease surrounded by all the lovely smells. A very faint memory came back to her, through the eyes of an young apprentice, just out of the nursery. Her eyes open widely as she quickly glances round, confused where it had come from. As far as she knew, she hadn't been here before. Lavenderbreeze breathes deeply to calm her nerves. Maybe she had been here, when she was very young. She looks at Rhymingsilence, hoping she hadn't startled the tom as she'd just startled herself.
"It's a beautiful spot." She dips her head. Lavenderbreeze settles in beside Rhymingsilence, taking a seat near the flowers. The green eyed nursery aid hums a soft song, almost a lullaby. It was one she used in the nursery when kittens were unable to fall asleep, and it felt fitting here as they laid the bug to rest.

When he eventually tore his gaze from the coneflowers, he noticed an odd expression on Lavenderbreeze's face. But it disappeared in a heartbeat. For a moment, he wondered if he'd just imagined it or if she really had been startled by something. However, the question forming at the tip of his tongue vanished as the she-cat relaxed beside him. "It is," he easily agreed and then listened intently to her song. It wasn't a tune he was familiar with, but then, he'd never had the pleasure to hear much music in his life. He wasn't very talented in the area either, so he tried to avoid humming himself. It was a pleasant sound, soothing to his nerves, and he quickly realized why she doing it.
Rhymingsilence padded closer to the flowers and started digging a small hole in front of their stems. As he did this, he noticed beetles identical to his fallen friend atop the smooth, purple petals. He smiled sadly at them as he lowered the bundle in his mouth into the hole and covered the earth with his paws. Guilt and shame washed over him, but the sadness he felt wasn't solely for the bug. Memories of his sister resurfaced in his mind against his will. Her fate was uncertain, even to him, but he couldn't help but think about this being her funeral. Or their mother or father's. So caught up in his own thoughts, he failed to notice his body trembling in a silent battle of despair. His eyes watered but he was at least saved from the embarrassment of crying in front of Lavenderbreeze.
Lavenderbreeze watches the bugs, the one who had been laid to rest, and the ones who littered the flowers around them. The echoes of her memories continued to dance across her brain, there, but not quite formed enough to have any importance. She closes her eyes, reaching for them...
It's then she feels the tom's trembling beside her, her eyes slowly open and she's quickly brought back to the reality she's standing in. Instinct takes over quickly and she moves, settled easily against Rhymingsilence's side. She breathes deeply and calmly, in hopes the feeling of the rise and fall of her chest might help regulate his. She understood the difficulty of crying in front of others, even if she didn't quite understand what he was crying about. Lavenderbreeze felt it was deeper than surface level, and more intense than the death of the beetle. Her green eyes are filled with concern, but she stays pressed to his side, hoping the touch, and the rhythmic breathing was helping him at all.

He felt like he was drowning in his emotions. For a while, his surroundings disappeared and left him alone in the clearing. He felt small and weaker than he ever had before, but it also felt like this horrible weight had lifted off of him. These feelings had been devouring him for a while now and he'd kept bottling it up. Now they had exploded, but at least he was letting it out. He was finally dealing with them. Once that acceptance started creeping in, his awareness slowly clicked back into place.
Lavenderbreeze was sitting up against him now. He didn't even realize she'd moved there, and as he blinked the tears from his eyes, he felt humiliated. She probably thought he was this upset over a beetle and a warrior crying so openly? It was kind of pathetic. "Sorry about that," he croaked. "I don't know what came over me there." Her warmth was soothing though and he couldn't bring himself to step away from her even if he wasn't crying anymore.
Lavenderbreeze purrs gently, not out of content but in hopes to comfort the tom beside her. "It's okay, Rhymingsilence. Please never apologize for releasing emotions." Her green eyes search the larger tom over, concern shining through them. "Are you okay? Is there anything i can do for you?"
The petite grey she-cat didn't move, nor did she give any indication that she would. She wanted to make sure that he was okay above anything else. "I don't think this is just the beetle, though I would understand why it would be a trigger for rawer emotions." She rests a paw gently over his. "I know that we're new friends, and you don't have to tell me anything, but I am here for you if one day you decide you're ready to share your story." Lavenderbreeze gives a gentle smile, before taking her paw away.

“Th- thank you,” he croaked before clearing his throat. He wasn’t any less embarrassed about all of this but he felt better knowing she wasn’t going to make fun of him for it. He’d never known anyone so nice before. Most of the cats he knew looked for every opportunity to tease or ignore him unless he pretended to be more like them. But here, with Lavenderbreeze, he felt free to be himself, safe, and perhaps even liked for his differences. “I’m not ready to talk about it yet but... I’ll tell you one day. You’ve already done so much for me just by being yourself and uh, I don’t even know what I’m trying to say. I just, I’m just glad to have met you.”
He smiled at her then and placed his other paw on the one she had on his. “And maybe if you want to, we could try to do something fun. Maybe end the day on a brighter note?”
Lavenderbreeze purrs softly, making sure the tom knew she wasn't angry, and she wouldn't judge him. Something she'd learned through her moons of working with kits and queens alike that adults were essentially big babies. Everyone had the same needs in different forms as they got older. Wounds still needed to be cared for, just as they would in a child. In truth, Lavenderbreeze didn't find herself kind, just understanding. She wasn't the type to push others away when they were hurting.
"I'd be happy to spend time with you." She flicks her ears forward, thinking for a moment. "Do you want to go to the meadow where the fireflies gather?"
