Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
Aspenstar looked up to the sky. She hadn't done this in a while, taken a moment just to consider her position in the universe. She had gotten caught up in how things felt so large. Chaos was lingering just under the surface of her clan. She was adjusting to Rosethorn. She was dealing with family drama. It felt like enough to absolutely suffocate her. Maybe that's why she decided she needed to go stargazing that night. When she looked up at the sky, she felt peace in the fact that she was meaningless. Everything in her life was meaningless; she was so small, a cog in a greater machine. That gave her deep comfort. No matter how big things felt, her problems were merely a fleck of dust in a universe that was far too big for her to even remotely understand. She let out a soft breath, her gaze focused on the swirling stars, completely in her own world, so much so that she didn't even hear the other cat approach ...
"Letting your guard down is a mistake you'll only make once." His appearance would alarm most others who found themselves alone in the dead of night with this monster, scarred lip puling back over his fangs, but there was no place in Phantomfox's heart to harm his leader and best friend. Though he did find it strange to come across her out on her own. As he moved closer to her, the shadows would part and moonlight would uncover the dark splatters congealed in his fur, several new and barely closed wounds scattered across Aspenstar's guard. "I passed a patrol on my way back here, so I know you're not on a solo patrol. What's on your mind?" His voice was kept low and soft, barely a whisper on the wind, but there was the glitter of concern in his vibrant silver gaze that trickled into his tone.
"Figures, you're the one to find me," she meowed, offering her friend a soft smile. "Join me?" she asked, nodding to the space next to her. She glanced back to the sky, her eyes glimmering in the moonlight. "What, I can't just enjoy a good night of stargazing? Must I have something on my mind?" Her tone was in slight jest, but it was also tired. "When I was younger, Dad'd take me out here, tell me that the stars up there fight fiercely each night to protect us. A silly child's tale, maybe, but it's always brought me a hint of comfort when everything gets too complicated to return to the stories. Makes things a little easier." For once, her tone almost betrayed the storm just below the surface. Her anxiety had been bad lately. It was perhaps understandable, but it exhausted her to always be on edge. Looking up at the sky brought her a little peace when her mind raced, but she didn't know how to tell him that without making him worry.
He moved forward to sit beside her, but he didn't dare look up at where the heavens would be certainly mocking him, instead his gaze remaining on his leader. He smiled at her shared memory, it sounding a little too familiar. "I tell Foxkit something like that too. Life always seems too large for him, so I like him to have something to believe in, some comfort to lean on if anything were ever to happen to Rosethorn or I. For him they are an answer to his troubles," he regaled, his voice softer than it usually was. His head tilted sidelong, scrutinizing her, before he asked, "So what troubles are you looking for answers for?"
" Nothing will happen to you," she meowed quickly, perhaps too quickly, when he said that. It seemed like equal parts a promise and a plead; Aspenstar was pretty sure that the final straw that would push her into a spiraling breakdown was something happening to Phantomfox. Pretty much anything else she could have handled, but not that. She then let out a sigh. There were so many answers to the question he posed- what was she looking for, really? She still wasn't sure. She probably would never be sure, at least not fully. She closed her eyes for a moment, before smirking. "Maybe how many times I can tell Cana I need some lavender before she asks me if I have a substance use problem," she meowed after a moment. There, she had named it, but not really. If he knew anything about herbs, he'd know that lavender was used to calm. Her implied frequency gave him another clue. Maybe he'd put them together and realize it was her anxiety that was suffocating her, but maybe he wouldn't. Either way, she'd been about as direct as she would be unless he persisted.
He couldn't say he wasn't surprised by her outburst nor the emotion churning beneath it, but if their roles were reversed, he'd also have answered a little too quickly, a little too fearfully. "Nothing will happen to me for about nine more lives," he assured her, and then smirked. "How is it I have more lives left than you? I always thought you were more careful than me."
His tail twitched at her next comment. He didn't know very much about herbs at all, but Rosethorn did teach him about a few, especially ones that helped Foxkit. Lavender was one they gave him when his nerves were bad. "Is it the clan?" Misfortunate seemed to plague NightClan worse than mosquitos during the moist summer months, and it was something everyone felt, but Aspenstar would feel it more sharply than anyone else.
