Jetfire stiffened, her paws coming to a stop as she stared with wide eyes at the river before them. Ash flowed through the river, the acrid smell reaching her nose. She could see a plume of smoke in the distance, but it was what she couldn’t hear that frightened her the most. She couldn’t hear any of the familiar bird songs, scratching of mice, or the nibbling of rabbit. SunClan had always had an abundance of food, but now it looked barren. At least the messenger hadn’t been lying about the explosion... But this made her worry even more, this river came directly from sunclan’s camp, if the water her was undrinkable...
“We should wait here” she murmured softly to her mate “SunClan doesn’t take trespassing lightly... and even with my mother back in power there are cats who will still see me as a traitor” her voice seemed loud in the eerie silence. Once you left SunClan you were dead to them, but literally and figuratively. It was almost as if you had died, the mourned your loss but the cat you were was no more. Upon seeing you again, you were no longer family but enemies. The thought of having to fight with one of her siblings sent a shudder down her spine, pressing herself to Firetooth for comfort. She was already doubting her decision to return, and with every passing moment she had to struggle to hold back the flood of bad memories, pain, and grief. Firetooth was her strength, her tether keeping her grounded in reality.
Green eyes narrowed cautiously as they stared ahead into the barren, charred forest that stretched ahead of them, the tom's nose scrunching uncomfortably at the smell of burnt wood and whatever else. Firetooth nodded at her words almost absentmindedly, unable to tear his gaze away from the polluted river that ran in front of his paws. This place had never held any good memories for the Medicine Cat, and the scene before him only solidified his resolve to get whatever information Littlestar had for them and get out as soon as possible; return to Swiftclan's camp within the abandoned twoleg park, where it was safe, and he was with his family.
"Listen," he meowed to her, trying to keep his voice as low as possible. "You know Sunclan far better than I ever have; the second something seems too off to you, just say the word and we'll make a break for it. I'll be trusting your judgement here, Jetfire." He stepped in beside her so that their pelts were brushing together and took a breath, steeling himself for whatever might happen. "Considering that you disappeared without a trace though," he continued, "It's possible they might've assumed you and your kits perished in the fire, like we all thought Raystrike had." Having Sunclan consider her a lost daughter over a traitor was a...slightly better case scenario, but not one that didn't come with its own different set of problems.

"That would best case scenario... Our best bet is to not give out to much information until we meet with my mother" she pulled away from the medicine cat, knowing that it would be better to keep the cats guessing as to what they were doing here. Her mind racing through several different scenarios and outcomes. The goal was to get to Littlestar, especially if what the messenger said was true and she had overthrown Bloodystar. However even if this was some sort of trap and he had Littlestar imprisoned, the goal would still be the same. Get to her, and get her out. At the sound of footsteps in the distant she went quiet, simply waiting on the patrol to approach them. They were not trying to hide their presence nor were they on SunClan's side of the border GidgetGal
Firetooth sat up straight, giving his chest fur a few contemplative licks and wrapping his tail around his paws, which were fidgeting with the small, leafy bundle that rested on the ground in front of him. It was a small parcel of healing salves and herbs he had brought along as a show of goodwill, or perhaps a bribe, depending of who happened to come across the pair. His ear twitched at the noise in the distance, and Medicine Cat's mind fought tooth and claw to keep his body relaxed. Ironic, that he was the most nervous trying to get into Sunclan the regular, normal way. He kept himself facing forward with a neutral expression, but as the sounds of rustling and pawsteps drew closer, he gave one more, quick sideways glance at Jetfire. As desperately as he wanted to be in control of this situation, he wasn't; he needed to put his trust in his mate, and follow her lead. racer
The first cat to find them was none other than Watermelonpaw. The bright red-and-white tom had somehow managed to get right up on the two SwiftClan Warriors unnoticed, although he didn't look to be all that stealthy of a cat. In fact he looked... friendly? But that scent and the body paint betrayed his affiliations if he location on the SunClan side of the border did not.
"That's Jetfire and Firetooth, mouse-brain," Soaringlight said, padding up from the same direction that Watermelonpaw had come from. She seemed a lot more reserved than the apprentice but didn't come across as aggressive, mostly just annoyed, "What are you doing back here? Littlestar may be High Priestess again, but SunClan will always be SunClan. You should keep your get-out-of-jail-free card and go back to whatever paradise you came from before someone less friendly finds you."
Watermelonpaw frowned but knew his place; when the adults started talking, he stopped.

Jetfire dipped her head as the young cat approach but it was Soaringlight that caught her attention. She could still remember the young she-cat though she had been only an apprentice back then. She was taller and more toned, but there was still the same undeniable fire in her eyes. Duskslayer was her father, the cat Bloodystar had chosen to be his promised. So if Bloodystar was really gone, than why was she still here in SunClan? It gave her a slight pause, but Soaringpaw wasn't known for lying or deceit, so that the fact that she mentioned her mother was High Priestess again did give her some relief "I'm answering the High Priestess diret order" she replied curtly, keeping her words short and concise "Take us to my mother"
A variety of sarcastic quips came to mind as they were confronted by the warrior and apprentice, but, perhaps similarly to Watermelonpaw on the other side of the border, the passive-aggressive words exchanged between the two she-cat was enough of a giveaway that he should probably keep his trap shut, lest he get them into any more trouble. While Firetooth had the claim that he lived among Sunclan for a short period of time, he never really knew them. Jetfire did. Instead, the Medicine Cat bent over and gently picked up the bundle of herbs, revealing a variety of aloe vera, honey, coltsfoot, and other herbs to specifically help with burns and smoke, wrapped up together in a large fern leaf. Sunclan may be a prideful bunch, but if the damage was as bad as he and Jetfire had been told, they'd be fools to turn away a gift like this.
Soaringlight leaned forward to give the herbs Firetooth had so graciously presented a sniff and her brilliant blue eyes shined with recognition. She'd been trained in herbs and their uses by her grandmother, Mountainsound, and knew exactly what these herbs could do as well as which cats she'd like to give them to. Still, she held herself back slightly, suspicion etched in her features.
"Littlestar hasn't said anything about expecting guests..." Soaringlight said, her eyes shifting back toward SunClan camp, "... But I guess it won't hurt to take the two of you to her. After all, it's not like there's any risk of you learning the top secret way to get into camp. Just don't blame me if she doesn't let you leave. Watermelonpaw, help the old man with his herbs."
With that the dark-furred she-cat turned her back to the two newcomers and began to head back toward camp. Watermelonpaw scampered over to Firetooth's side with a smile on his face and pawed at the herb bundle slightly, "These are great! Most of ours got burned away but now that we have all new starts we will never run out!"
"Watermelonpaw." Soaringlight said sternly and the apprentice's ears pinned to the back of his head. It seemed he had revealed more than he should have... Although he didn't lose his smile, "I'll carry these if you don't mind."
Jetfire smiled a little at the young cat's enthusiasm, nodding to Firetooth. Hanging onto the herbs would only make it more difficult if they did have to flee quickly, and it wasn't as if either of these cat would know what to do with them "Just be careful" she warned the younger cat "You need to hold it exactly where he tells you to so that they don't get damaged. Let him show you" she hesitated for a moment, one foot hovering over the border as she pushed down a wave of anxiety. No, this wasn't the time to be afraid. Showing weakness in SunClan was as good as a death sentence, she needed to stay strong until they got to Littlestar. She strode over the border coming up to Soaringlight's side "I know the risks" followed by something unintelligible whispered under her breath 'more than most"
Well that was awkward. Littlestar hadn't known that he daughter and mate were coming, much less that they were going to show up in the middle of Camp. After a moment of confusion, she played along and invited them to her den. As soon as they were alone, she rushed up to Jetfire and nuzzled up against her cheek "What in the Sun God's name are you two doing here?" she questioned , looking between them for some sort of explanation. She hadn't told anyone outside of their immediate family that Jetfire was alive and well, so that she could live the life she had chosen in peace "Is it the kits? Are they ok" there were not many cats outside of her immediate family that got to see Littlestar drop down her walls, but right now her concern overrode her need for formality
Jetfire leaned into her mother "No they are fine... its just... You didn't send for us?"
Littlestar shook her head "No, I thought you wanted to keep your presence in SwiftClan a secret...."
It was exactly the scenario they both had feared; Littlestar hadn't sent for them, and had no idea they were coming. No more need for fake politeness or holding his tongue, Firetooth got straight to the point. "Exactly one day ago, Jetfire was met by a messenger wearing both Sunclan's symbols and scent, saying that Bloodystar was overthrown by you, and that you urgently desired to speak with us...with all of our kits in tow." At least half of that appeared to be right, thank the ancestors; sure enough, Littlestar was in charge, meaning that Bloodystar had gotten exactly what he deserved and was gone from Sunclan, hopefully forever. On one paw, that meant that this hadn't been a set-up by Bloodystar to get to their kits, but on the other...it meant that neither he nor Jetfire had any idea who set this up, and something about that thought made the Medicine Cat even more anxious than before.

Even with her mother and Firetooth here, it was clear that being back here wasn't good for Jetfire. While Firetooth spoke her face had gone pale, eyes locked into the corner of the den that Littlestar had made her nest. This had been her prison for so long, this was where she had tried to take her own life. It made her feel nauseous and dizzy, missing Littlerstar's answer to the question she had asked due to the roaring of blood in her own ears.
Littlestar's eyes narrowed "No I wouldn't have sent for you... not now" she paused noticing how pale Jetfire had grown. It was probably a bad idea bringing her here, but it was the only private place to speak in the camp with so many cats running around. Where would she even begin? Well first was dealing with her daughters distress "While I am glad to see you, it's to dangerous for you to be here" she kept her voice soft, slinking back to her herb stores to grab something for both Jetfire's nerves and nausea "I didn't think.... Look there are some things that you both need to know. However, keeping it secret is of upmost importance. I fear that you and your kits may be in danger..."
As soon as he realized that Jetfire wasn't doing well, Firetooth dropped everything and was immediately at her side, rubbing his tail up and down her back comfortingly. It had been so long, he had even recognized that they were in his mate's former prison, where Ghostcrown had saved her and her kits from the flames. "Hey, it's okay," he purred softly as he pulled her in close to his chest, where she could hear his heartbeat. "I'm here. Your mother's here. I won't let anything hurt you anymore." Of course, that was immediately followed by Littlestar's assertation that his family might be in danger, and his eyes narrowed at her. "Explain. Tell me everything."

Jetfire was stiff, even as Firetooth pulled her in close to his chest and rubbed her back. It was only when her head was pressed against his chest that she began to give into the pressure, slowly being drawn out of the horrors that plagued her. Her skin felt like it was crawling with bugs, and had Firetooth not been holding her she probably would have went running out of the den. She thought she could handle this, that she could be strong, but it was to much. She couldn't hide the way her body trembled. Firetooth... She listened to his heart, trying to calm her own until it matched his. Slowly melting into his embrace
Seeing Jetfire lie this made her want to rush to her daughter's side, but right now Firetooth was whom she need. She sat the herbs at his paws "Maybe she will take them coming from you..." she replied hopefully, clearly anxious about her condition, but not wanting to rush in and make things worse.
She took in a deep breathe "I can't not until you swear that not a word of what I am going to tell you will leave this den... You have a right to know, but not if you are going to put others in danger"
Seasons ago, Firetooth would never trust any herbs given to him by Littlestar, of all cats. But in that moment he took what she offered him without hesitation, carefully nosing the leaves over to Jetfire. "Listen," he mewed softly. "Take a few deep breaths, and then eat these. Your mind is remembering the past as if it just happened. These will help you see things as they truly are. The flames are gone... and so is he." He kept running his tail up and down his mate's back, no addressing the High Priestess until his mate finally bent down to eat the herbs. Only then did he lift his head to look at her.
"Do you really think I'd be so stupid?" He replied, his voice low but challenging. As prideful as he was, the Medicine Cat had learned his lesson from Sunclan's last attack of Swiftclan. "Depending on what you tell me - and you will tell me, if it regards the safety of Jetfire and her kits - there's only one other cat in this entire forest that I would consider sharing my knowledge with, and that's my own prerogative. Though if it makes you feel better, I won't say or do anything unless my family is threatened directly."

"Then I am unable to tell you" Littlestar replied firmly, holding her ground without compromise
It took a few moments for Firetooth's words to process, but finally Jetfire lowered her muzzle to lap at the herbs that she had been presented with. The herbs began working almost immediately, her rapid breaths slowing, her gaze clearing, and the tremors beginning to stop. The horrific visions stating to fade and the dimly lit den and her her mother coming more into focus.
"This is bigger than the two of you, it is bigger then just me, it is bigger than just SunClan" While Firetooth may be Jetfire's mate, it didn't mean that he had earned her trust. She truly believed he loved her daughter, but if it was between her and destruction he would let the world burn. Of that she had no doubt. It was the same way she felt about her family, the same reason many cats despised her "You have shown that you don't know how to hold your tongue or be discrete. So without that vow, I will tell you nothing more" she paused, eyes landing on Jetfire "But I will tell her" before looking back at Firetooth once more "You can wait outside while we speak"
His first instinct was to bare his teeth at her, snap back that he did know how to hold his tongue and be discrete; he was definitely discrete when he helped Autumngossamer curse and overthrow the Sun God without her knowledge. But he also knew that arguing with the High Priestess would get him nowhere, and probably make her even less likely to give him the information he desired.
His second instinct was to just give Littlestar what she wanted; to vow that not a word she spoke to him would ever leave that den. And he would stand by it; he liked to think of himself as a Medicine Cat of honor, after all. He would hang onto every word. Learn everything he possibly could about the danger that threatened his family. Do whatever it took to protect those he loved. He would...
Play the hero? The smallest of voices echoed in the back of his mind, one that he knew all too well. Did you seriously forget what happened last time? It mocked. 'Of course I remember,' he shot back. 'I saved Autumngossamer, I've saved Jetfire.' You stood by and let your clanmates get attacked by Sunclan, and you lost the respect of the one cat willing to give you a second chance when no one else would. The voice replied. Tell me, what else are you willing to sacrifice for your personal glory, now that you have so much more to lose?
Firetooth knew the answer. He took a deep breath to calm himself, and then stood up. "Then I'll stand outside," he finally decided. "A long time ago, someone told me that I have a responsibility to protect Swiftclan, and that everything I choose to do reflects on all of them. And while words cannot describe how much I absolutely hate to admit it, he was right. If what you have to say has to do with my family, my clanmates, or my clan as a whole being in danger, then I have a duty as Swiftclan's Medicine Cat to tell my leader about it, whether you like it or not. Jetfire has no such restrictions, and I trust her judgement to do what is best for our family. But when I say that I'll protect my family, I mean all of them."

"I would expect nothing less of you" Littlestar replied, not at all surprised by his answer.
After all was that not what Littlestar was doing now? Protecting her family and clan from the threat that they faced? This thing wasn't after SwiftClan, it was after her. It wanted to make her suffer, to see SunClan burn. Another clan having knowledge of this would only cause more trouble when they were surrounded by enemies. SunClan couldn't afford to look any weaker than they already appeared. They couldn't afford a war, not with the dark shadow of this thing looming over head. She watched as the tom was escorted of her den, leaving her shivering daughter to face her alone. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been several long minutes, before the two of them emerged from the High Priestess den. Jetfire went immediately to her mate's side, burying her nose into his fur without so much as a word. Littlestar hadn't followed, standing on the ledge her voice ringing out for the cats of SunClan to gather for their evening prayers. Cats began emerging from all the crevices, filling the sandy beach below and bowing their heads. The sun was beginning to set, and this was tradition for SunClan. Every cat that was able to, always attended morning and evening prayers. It wasn't optional. Even injured cats had managed to hobble out onto the downward facing ledge to hear the High Priestess' words "Come" she led the way over to the edge of the ledge looking over he gathered cats as her mother's familiar voice filled the air. It was soothing, her fur slowly laying flat the tremors slowly stopping. She was looking for something, though to what she didn't say. Her mother droned on, until Jetfire tilted her head up to catch her head. She shook it from one side to the other slowly, then Littlestar wrapped it up before going to join them.
She touched her nose to her daughter's forehead "You don't have to decide now. Go, keep your family safe" she looked over her shoulder at Firetooth "I'm going to hold you to what you said in my den. I hope you meant every word of it" she reluctantly released her hold on her daughter and taking a step backwards
