Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
every year around this time i present at student scholars day, a conference for undergraduate scholars to disseminate their work. last year, i put an open invite to members of classic to come see me present, and i thought eh, what the hell, cleav said it was fun to watch so let's do a round two !! this year i looked at hillbilly horror and the ways in which it affirms/denies stereotypes of southerner/rural folk
my official elevator pitch : do you like horror movies ? do you like cornfields ? how bout some brutal murder ? if you answered yes to any of those questions, this is the research for you !
my abstract: As a genre, horror is meant to provoke fear and instill dread for those who consume it. However, this is not the only purpose of the genre, and research suggests that an underlying purpose of horror is to illuminate and think through social problems through horror’s speculative nature. This speculative nature is amplified through the use of the monster, a figure that is at the center of almost any horror movie in some capacity. This project examines a particular sort of monster: the rural monster created through the subgenre of hillbilly horror. It looks at four foundational texts of the genre and examines the ways in which rurality is cast as inherently monstrous and dangerous and thinks through what this means for those communities. It also seeks to challenge the underlying classist assumption of hillbilly horror that suggests that racism, homophobia, sexism and other systems of power only exist in rural spaces.
NOTES : - i pronounce things very strangely sometimes pls ignore - i have a slight stutter/lisp and was too lazy to edit it out so there's a couple points where it takes me an awkwardly long time to figure out what i'm trying to say so ignore those - it's sort of long bUT you can listen in up to 1.75 speed and have it still make sense. the pacing on 1x speed can drag a bit, but i blame jae they said my pacing was excellent LOL
