It was a nice, sunny day. The weather was warming and the sky was clear.
Oren was still new to SunClan, and still wasn't completely sure what he had gotten himself into. But, he was enjoying himself. There were a ton of other cats to talk to, new things to learn and new places to see. The only problem with being an initiate, was that he wasn't technically a full member of the clan yet. Some were either eager to teach him all they knew, while others avoided him and cast him untrusting glares. He didn't really notice the lather, and was just confused as to why they were acting strangely.
On days like today, he would be itching to explore new places. Today was no different. The tom padded around the camp, his paws twitching to leave and see what their territory had to offer, but he wasn't too sure on the rules yet. Could he just leave? He better not, just in case.

"Hey you" came a gruff voice, as a massive tortoiseshell she-cat came padding out of the warriors den "Yes I'm talking to you scrawny"
She towered over the new initiate, her shadow falling over him. Applecrumble had once been an initiate to, and didn't really care if he was a full member or not. She treated everyone with the same gruff attitude, even having the nerve to speak to the High Priest in such a manner "Come with me" she flicked her tail onto his shoulder turning to walk towards the exit. Noticing his hesitation, she growled "NOW initiate"

Oren nearly jumped out of his skin. He was so deep in his own thoughts, he hadn't noticed the she-cat padding towards him.
He stared at her blankly for a second, unsure whether or not she had been talking to him. Once he was sure, he scurried after her towards the exit. "Where are we going?" He asked curiously, although there was a hint of excitement in his tone.

"Hunting" was her reply though she didn't elaborate
Most cats were to afraid to hunt what she had in mind, but initiates didn't have any choice but to obey her commands. She led the way quietly out into the scar. The stone here was barren of any foliage, formed from fire and water. It was warm to the touch with the sun up above beating down on them.
She lead the tom to the top of the ravine where the stones were smooth and hot "Now we wait"

The striped tom trotted after her, his head held high and eyes wide as he took in the sights around him. SunClan's territory was much different than any other place he had come upon, and his pelt couldn't help but prickle with excitement every time he left the camp.
He climbed after his clanmate, leaping upon the hot stones. His paws danced a little as his pads adjusted to the heat. They weren't yet used to the burning sensation it caused.
"What are we waiting for?" He asked, ears perked and eyes looking around. He didn't notice any prey.

"If your quite for two seconds you will find out" she snapped
Her golden eyes never left the stone as she sat motionless. It was the right time of day, and if she was right than it woudn't be long. The sun was at it's peak, heating up the black parts of her thick coat until it was almost uncomfortable. Just before she was about to move on to the next spot, there was a distinct rattling. Her ears perked up, as something slowly slithered out from the stoned.
It coiled up upon the stone, taking in the sun's rays to warm itself "There" she murmured quietly "That is what we are hunting" the rattlesnake sat their, its tongue flicking in and out tasting the air "but if either of us get bit, we are dead"

The tom blinked at her, but didn’t speak again. He crouched beside the she-cat, still looking around for whatever it was they’d be hunting. It seemed to take a long time, but Oren noticed the noise at the same time as Applecrumble.
He sat up, recoiling a little at the sight of it. “What is that?” He asked her, keeping his voice low like she had done. Oren had seen snakes before, but none that looked like this and made that rattling noise.

"We call it a rattler" her eyes were shimmering, as she watched the dangerous creature with careful eyes "When threatened it rattles its tail to scare you away, but the real danger is in it's bite. It is venomous, and if it bites you, you'll be dead before help can get here. We can eat it, and the higher ups use the venom in their experiments. Catching them is tricky, but that is why I brought you along"
She nudged him forward "Go be a distraction, and Ill sneak around back. Snakes are simple minded creatures, all you have to do is keep it's attention on you" She pushed the initiate out of their hiding spot "Just don't get bit"

He nodded along to her words, his eyes not leaving the rattler “I can do that!” He responded determinedly right before she shoved him into the open. Okay, I can do this, he urged himself. He took a few paw steps towards the snake, which had stood up to half height. It’s tail shook back and forth rapidly and it hissed. This didn’t deter Oren, and he slowly circled around so it was facing away from where his clanmate was hiding “Heyyy there rattler...” he spoke, making sure to keep his distance. The only sign of fear was the prickle of the fur on his neck. “Why don’t you look over here, alright?” He cooed.

Applecrumble fully expected the initiate to run, but to her surprised he went out before the rattler bravely.
Snakes once focused, became oblivious to other things around them. She watched as it began to way back and forth ready to strike at her clan-mate before creeping out of her hiding spot. She had to admit the scrawny brat had some guts. She waited until just the right moment, but noticed that he was far to close. Snakes could strike farther than one thought.
The snake jetted outwards towards Oren, as Applecrumbled leaped. She landed heavily on it's head, pinning it to the ground before lowering her muzzle to kill it as it continued to squirm under he grasp "You mouse-brain, I told you not to get bit"

He stumbled back, and although her words were harsh, he couldn’t help but feel ecstatic. They had really killed a rattler!
“That was awesome!” He exclaimed and hopped forward to examine the dead reptile. He was glad to have been of assistance, and the current adrenaline he felt through his body made him eager to do it more. “Are there any more?”

"Apprentices like to come out here to play, and we have lost several cats to them. I have taken it on as my personal duty to kill as many as possible" appled crumble sat down licking her paw "Don't touch the head, it can still bite"

Oren’s paw was just about to reach for the head when she spoke. He froze midair and then pulled it back. “Heh, okay.” He replied. “I’d love to help, if you still need it.” The brown tom had calmed down a little bit, and licked his chest to settle his fur down. His mew was earnest. If it meant helping the Clan, he wanted in. Especially if it was something this fun and exciting.

"Good, snakebait" she liked the name a lot better than Oren, and besides he had earned it. A step up from scrawny, even though it would probably sound cruel to others that over heard it. "Lets move this, and then we wait" she picked up the dead snake and placed it hidden near some of the desert shrubs "The thing about rattlers is they need the sun, even more than us. Its warms their bodies, without it they would die. So all we have to do is wait, and they will come to us with enough time"

His nose scrunched up at the nickname. “Snakebait...?” He echoed, not too fond of it. Well, it was technically true right now. He listened carefully to her words, soaking in all the information. He would have never learned all this if he stayed a kittypet!
The tom crouched down beside Applecrumble in their hiding spot and once again waited. He was so focused on the task that he didn’t even know how long it was before the next rattler appeared.
Oren watched as it slithered into the opening, and he pressed himself lower to the ground, narrowing his green eyes “Now?” He asked the she-cat, his voice hushed.

Applecrumble nodded, this time allowing him to creep out on his own instead of pushing him. After all he had volunteered for the job and it would be a shame if he died after they only caught one.
The tortioshell waited in place patiently, having two of them made this a lot easier.

He did similar to what he had done before, except took the she-cats words to account and distanced himself a little further. His eyes focused on the snake, which surprisingly hadn’t noticed him this time. He let out a chattered murr to catch its attention and it immediately whipped around to stare at him. A small smirk played on the toms muzzle, and he took one paw step closer “Hey, hey, look over here” he called to it, taking his time to circle around it. He stopped once the snake was perfectly between him and their hiding spot.
The rattler suddenly striked forward, and Oren jumped back. Thankfully, it was only a warning and he was far enough away. He would glance periodically to where Applecrumble was hiding, hoping she’d reveal herself sooner than later.

Applecrumble waited until she was sure that the snake was focused on Oren before moving out. After all one wrong move and it was all over. She waited on her chance, suddenly leaping and pinning this one's head as well and swiftly killing it "At least our young apprentices and warriors will be a little bit safer now" she licked her lips, and moved the snake with her paws rolling it over "Not bad Snakebait"
The tortoiseshell looked up at the sun that was starting to fall from the sky "I doubt we will catch any more in this spot" she pointed up at the sun "with the sun fading, they will be out on the hunt instead of sunning themselves "Want to try your paw at something else?" she grinned mischeviously

Oren was a little disappointed at her words. He wanted to try and kill a snake himself! But he guessed he'd just have to wait for another day.
He tilted his head curiously at the she-cat "Something else?" He asked. "I mean, sure!" He added with sparkling eyes. What did the she-cat have in mind?

"Well, snakes are not the only dangerous creature out here in the desert" she paused seeing the disappointment on his face "This time you will do the hunting" she flicked her tail on his shoulder, leading the way down the ravine as the sun began to set the sky full of brilliant colors as the world around them seemed to be set alight "What we are hunting next can be just as deadly as the rattlers, but they are smaller and sneakier. They are covered in a hard outershell, and if their tail touches you is game over. They like to hide in crevices waiting on their next victim at night when they are at the advantage"
She leapt onto the high boulder "We need to find a way to draw them out"
