It was that time when the sun was lowering into the sky, but not far enough for the brilliant colours of orange and yellow to appear. The canvas above was still a pretty light blue.
Wind ruffled through Cypressfeather's thick coat, and she made sure to puff up to protect herself from the cold. It wasn't too chilly out when the air was still, but every once in a while a breeze would rustle through the trees, causing a shiver to run up her spine. She was glad in times like this to have her long fur.
The she-cat sat at the edge of camp, her silver and white tail gently wrapped over her paws. She was watching some of the apprentices practice their training together. She liked to see them have fun, but was also keeping an eye out in case someone got hurt.
Her ears twitched slightly as she sensed another cat come to sit beside her, but her eyes didn't leave the apprentices. "Good evening," she greeted, a warmth to her tone.
"Keeping an eye on them? Smart." The weather tonight was just right to put Dancingdragon in a pleasant mood, the Trusted exiting her den and shaking her pelt loosely, the chill snaking along her shoulders but not enough for her to retreat back inside. She eyeballed the apprentices in question-- Raggedpaw among them, one of the clan's infamous troublemakers-- but as they weren't doing anything suspicious at the moment, she let her attention drift along the rest of the camp. Jetstar was still pocketed away in her den, recuperating from an illness, while Goldengriffon had most of the clan's kits rounded up for a lesson that was quickly devolving into chaos. "They're cute little headaches for sure, but SpringClan hasn't been known for having...typical apprentices the last few moons," she remarked, an echo of humor resonating in her voice.

The she-cat chuckled softly in response. "You can't trust the fur-balls," she responded with a glimmer of amusement in her eyes. She couldn't even count how many times an apprentice or two ended up in the medicine den because they went a little too far. Cypressfeather shook her head at the thought. "Well, at least they're eager." the fluffy tabby and white cat added with a shrug. "I just wish they'd be more careful."
"Eager is an understatement." Dancingdragon snorted at the comment, her mind wandering to the apprentices in question. "I'm not sure if you've seen them on action yet, but we have a Trouble Trio as Jetstar likes to call them. They like to start clan mutinies in their spare time, but there's something to be said for their creativity, I suppose." With the recent news of her own pregnancy, she could only hope her upcoming litter was just as troublesome as the current roster of youths, if only because she liked to make Jetstar's life that much more thrilling.
Curling her tail over her paws, she glanced at Cypressfeather, her imperial jade gaze curious. "We haven't spoken much before this, have we? That's probably my fault; I've been preoccupied lately. How have you been?"

The she-cat's eyes widened slightly at her words. "Mutinies, you say?" She couldn't help but let out a huff of amusement. She had heard they were trouble, but was definitely not expecting that. She shook her head, slightly in disbelief and slightly in mirth. "I like to think that ones with such traits will become fine warriors." As long as they decide to mature, she added in her own thoughts.
This time, she turned away from the apprentices to look at Dancingdragon. She did keep one ear focused towards the young cats though, just in case. "I've been quite well, just doing what needs to be done to help the clan thrive." Cypressfeather replied with a smile. "And you? How have you been?" The fluffy she-cat had noticed the very faint smell of milk on Dancingdragon's coat, and suspected she was expecting kits. Cypressfeather motioned her nose towards the she-cats belly. "When are they due?" she asked with a kind smile.
She stretched herself out and leaned onto her side, watching as the mellow blue of the sky began to gradually darken, slits of gold and lavender beginning to twine through it. "I'm sure they will be one day. I certainly was not the easiest apprentice myself when I was that age." The memory was fleeting, shaping itself into a smile on her maw, but a light hearted yawn fractured the expression.
Dancingdragon rose back into a sitting position, restlessness making her fidget, and nodded along as she listened to Cypressfeather's response. "You've been putting in some good work around here. I've seen you're contributions to the fresh-kill pile," she acknowledged, but she was quick to continue, glossing over the praise. Her tail swept close to her belly, a tender glow resonating there as she thought of the little lives she was presently responsible for. "Not too soon, thankfully. I have a moon or two to go. Their father doesn't know yet." Some might think it unorthodox of her to withhold the information from her mate, but Dancingdragon seemed amused more than anything, attention drifting to her mate. He'd find out soon enough; she was just waiting for the perfect moment. "Maybe you'll find yourself a mentor to one of them...if you think you could handle that," she laughed, and delivered the remark with a wink.

Cypressfeather wondered what it would have been like to grow up as an apprentice. She had been born to a loner and lived the first year of her life with her mother and brothers. It was a lot different than being in a clan, but one thing similar was the sense of family and belonging.
She was surprised to hear that Dancingdragons mate didn’t know about the kits. “And he can’t sense the milk on your fur?” She asked, amused. Sometimes toms could be so clueless! She let out a soft chuckle and shook her had. She knew that if her brothers had still been alive, they’d be the same with their own mates. Thinking about them was bitter sweet, but it wasn’t something she liked to dwell on.
She gave the she-cat a thankful smile at her praise and the mention of mentoring one of her kits. Since she hadn’t been born into the clan, Cypressfeather hadn’t yet had the chance to mentor an apprentice of her own. It was something she was hopeful towards, as it was almost seen as an official right into the clan. “I’d like that very much” the fluffy silver and white tabby responded with a purr.
"Toms are very oblivious, fathers especially," chimed the ivory feline, laughing. Goldengriffon might have been one of the smartest cats she'd ever met, but when it boiled down to it, he often overlooked the most obvious things. "Hopefully they take after me in that regard."
Still finding herself unable to sit still, Dancingdragon rose to her paws and glanced around the camp for any signs of an outgoing patrol. Seeing none, she then turned back to Cypressfeather and asked, "Mikd tagging along on am impromptu patrol? We can have Raggedpaw tag along so you get a taste of what mentoring is like." Nothing could go wrong...right? The apprentice couldn't be that much of a pawful on her own.

Cypressfeather smiled. "Of course." She replied.
The she-cat had been thinking about joining the most recent patrol, so this worked out perfect. She was getting restless just staying in camp. She pulled herself to her feet and stretched. It would be nice to get to know her fellow clanmates some more.
The fluffy she-cat looked back towards where the apprentices had been tussling, although this time she could sense an air of annoyance coming from them. Someone probably said or did something that another wasn't too fond of. It was a good enough time to break them up before it went too far. "Raggedpaw?" She called out to the young she-cat, then motioned with her head for the apprentice to come and join her and Dancingdragon.
"... and I'll put my paw in your a--aahhh, Cypressfeather!" Raggedpaw jolted upright and clamped her jaw shut on the insult she was delivering to the other apprentice, who blew a raspberry when she turned away and slunk off. The tabby trotted across to where the older she-cats were stretching and preparing to leave, whiskers twitching with interest. "Whatcha need from me?" Did they find her hoard? She glanced furtively around the camp.
"You're going to accompany Cypressfeather and I on a patrol this evening. We'll see what you've learned recently," Dancingdragon told her, silencing the protest that was beginning to spout from the younger cat, then motioned for her to follow them as they led the way from camp.
"Oh! Do you mind if I join you?" Softpelt meowed hurrying over to join the growing patrol. The fluffy white she cat had been taking a nap unused to warrior duties after so long being Fawnheart's fellow medicine cat. "I could use a chance to stretch my legs, and see how Raggedpaw is doing." She added with a purr looking towards the apprentice.
