Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. Aspenstar looked worn for the first time since becoming leader. She had reason to be; she was just coming out of the vigil for her brother. They'd laid what was left of his body in the dirt, and she had took guard of the camp in his honor. This meant that she was going on approximately zero hours of sleep, but her body wouldn't let her rest. It was still a wildfire of guilt and shame. Had she provided an ear for Oakleaf, maybe this wouldn't have happened. She should have been better. She should have picked up on the signs. In hindsight, they had been obvious. Oakleaf had been hiding something from her, but she hadn't figured it out until she was the one that happened across his body. The image of her dead brother was burned in her mind. She knew what he had felt in those last moments, exactly what he felt. She'd felt it the night that she drown, the first life she had lost. This made it even worse; she knew intimately the feeling of lungs filling with water, how helpless that one felt when they couldn't get back up to the water's surface. Had he regretted it, once he felt his body collapse into the water? Did it matter if he had? Aspenstar wasn't sure. What she was sure about, though, was the pain in her chest. Oakleaf's death was the first death that had ever come close to her, apart from her own death, which she had kept almost completely silent. She'd never experienced trauma before. Her life had been easy, and she didn't know how to deal with it now that it wasn't.
Her gaze fixated on the waterfall. It was the only place she knew to go, even though every time she closed her eyes here, she could see her brother's body. This had been the part of the territory that she'd always felt most at home. Did she still feel that way, knowing that this water had taken Oakleaf from her? She looked absent; not a single emotion passed through her mismatched gaze. It was as if she wasn't really there, like her body was but not her soul. It made sense, then, that the leader didn't hear the other cat approach...

Pinesimmer was not the right cat to be talking to Aspenstar. The tom was a touch bitter, and incredibly jealous of his sister. And in that way, he entirely blamed his brother's death right on her shoulders as leader. "Stop looking like that, acting like you actually care." The tom's voice snapped in her ear as he pulled up beside her, his harsh words were sharp, piercing, and altogether false, though certainly indicative of his own personal feelings on the matter.
Maplevow had been bitter since the deputy announcement. He had kept his jealous feelings under wraps, but was beginning to get slightly used to the idea. The death of his brother Oakleaf had been a shock. It felt like someone had pushed him in the icy water beneath the falls when he learned the tragedy. Needless to say he was living in denial. He wondered if maybe he hadn't been worried about his own jealously would Oakleaf still be standing here? He had lost count how many times he wandered off into the territory to let his screams of pain be drown out by the falls. Those same falls roaring loudly in his ears. Slicing through the tension in the air. He had followed his brother Pineshimmer to the falls. Wondering if he was going to confront her. He stood there kept quiet as Pineshimmer verbally attacked Aspenstar. At the moment he couldn't look Aspenstar or Pineshimmer in the face.
Aspenstar closed her eyes, sending a prayer up to StarClan that they would give her the strength not to tear her brother a new one. She then let out a breath, letting her mismatched gaze rest on Pinesimmer's shoulders. Her gaze glinted slightly, but otherwise bore no emotion. "You have no idea what you're talking about," she meowed flatly. There was a part of her that resented having to tell him that. She needed her siblings right now more than ever. She had needed them so much lately, and as a unit, they had all failed each other, and they had collectively failed Oakleaf. "This is not solely on me. You know that."
She then glanced at Maplevow. "A family reunion." She let out a sardonic laugh. "I'm sure you're just as ready to blame me, too? You blame me for picking Duskveil over you, Pinesimmer blames me for just about anything he can feasibly argue is my fault." She shook her head slowly. "Might as well just go for it, eh? Get all the verbal abuse out at once?" A flash of anger cut through her voice, a tone that she generally didn't speak to anyone but Pinesimmer with. But, anger was one of the steps of grief, right?
Maplevow had originally came to be civil. Had been gradually grown use to the idea of Duskveil being deputy whether he liked it or not. Her comment towards him caused his eyes to narrow. "Well I wasn't going to bring it up dear sister, but with that attitude I might reconsider my original decision." Maplevow snapped back as he could feel his blood pressure begin to rise.
"Might as well," she murmured in a low hiss, her gaze challenging. She was angry, angrier than she'd ever been at her siblings. She needed them to be there for her. She needed them to be a cohesive unit. She needed her family, beyond just Lostriver's endless devotion to his daughter. Her shoulders slumped slightly, before she let out a breath. "Sorry. This isn't on you, either," she responded after a moment, her gaze shifting away from her siblings to the water below. "I found something in his nest the day he died..."
"And you didn't immediately tell us!?" Pinesimmer snapped instantly. Did he care? Debatable. Could he use it against Aspenstar? Absolutely, and so he would. "What is it, or are you just going to selfishly keep it to yourself. I wouldn't be surprised, coming from you." There was no such thing as Pinesimmer really being there for his siblings. He'd always thought himself better, though he could hide it well when their parents were in view. He always seemed to need to have the last word.
He said the wrong thing at the wrong time. On a normal day, she would have shrugged him off. But, today was not a normal day, and her ability to deal with her brother's incessant aggravation was lacking. In a flurry of motions, she closed the distance between the two of them. Her paw collided to the side of his head, her claws digging into the soft flesh of his cheek.
"I am your leader. You will not talk to me like that, or you will leave my clan. The choice is yours, but make the wrong one, and you will not get another chance." Her words were not just frozen, they were icy. She leaned into him slightly, her gaze completely void of any emotion. "Am I clear?"
Pinesimmer hissed as he was hit, his paw coming up reflexively to dig his claws into her leg and keep her from putting it down, gripping on as tightly as he could, blood dripping down his cheek as he leaned forward just as she did, eyes blazing while they were nearly nose to nose. "I'm not going anywhere." He answered simply, voice a growl as he let go of her leg.
Fury simmered in her eyes, and she let out a low growl. "Leave," she ordered simply, her gaze daring him to challenge her. "I gave you the choice, you made it, now get the hell out." This was not exactly how she expected to spend her day, and the thought of losing another brother so soon made a part of her chest ache. But, the anger covered it almost completely. She was pissed, which meant she was on the war path.

One would think that, at some point, Pinesimmer would realize he was going too far. But alas, Pinesimmer was an idiot. He simply didn't know when to stop, least of all when his sibling was thinking she could dare to order him around. Someone smart would tell her they'd be going back to camp. And, as mentioned before, the brown warrior was certifiably stupid. So, instead of doing what he should have done, he was all too happy to challenge her, consequences be damned.
"How about we try that again, Aspenstar." His voice raised gratingly in pitch, as if he were baby talking a kit. "That wasn't very nice of you. Maybe get that attitude in check before your mouth reaches for a fish your paws can't catch." He had no idea how close to home that insult was, he was mostly just referencing water related things because of Oakleaf.
She didn't flinch at his words, although there was a flash of something darker in her eyes. Although she was genuinely a good cat, there was something that lingered just under the surface. She had resisted it her entire life, the call of the void. She had carefully resisted it up until this point, as she knew that allowing the darkness to come to the focus of her mind would send her slipping into a depravity that she wasn't sure she could come out of. Her control over that part of her was slipping quickly.
"Pinesimmer," her voice was cold, her gaze devoid of any emotion. "I am telling you this because there is a part of me that doesn't hate you. It is in your best interest to get away from me, immediately." Her claws unsheathed into the earth, the aggitation slowly making its way into her physicality. "You are pushing me to a place I do not know if there is a return from. For your own safety, back the hell off." Aspenstar had eight lives, her brother had one, and her grip on her anger was loosening with every passing moment.
“How about we tone down this little confrontation and everyone take a deep breath?” Maplevow suggested as he tried to cut through the tension in the air. He was all for getting under his sister’s skin but having a second dead brother wouldn't be an ideal situation. “Maybe it’s wise to listen to our dear sister, Pineshimmer” Maplevow meowed taking a cautious step away from Aspenstar and towards his brother.
