Crownglass woke up to find a little brown bird at the top of the fresh-kill pile, and he fell silent as he pondered what it meant.
Amberbird had gone missing moons ago, but they had never given up the search for the former medicine cat. Every passing day made it less likely they'd ever see his brother-in-law again, but how could he ask his mate to give up the search? Wasn't it worth it, just for the chance at success? But Crownglass was so tired. His head hurt. He had been staying up late to search, walking the borders to question rogues, waking up early to head out with the dawn patrol and look for new signs in the light of dawn. He hesitated, feeling a flash of guilt at the annoyance in her eyes. He didn't want to waste her time, especially when she was looking so stressed herself. He opened his mouth to reassure her, to ask about her instead, but before he could she answered his own question. Crownglass laughed a little. Was he that predictable?
"I could use someone to listen," he admitted, "if you aren't too busy. I know you have an apprentice to look after. I can wait."
