"I love you, Jetfire. I shouldn't. I'm not supposed to. But when I thought you died...it felt like a part of me was about to die with you. I don't think I can live without you, Jetfire. I don't want to live without you."
They hadn't spoken much after that fateful night; far too much to do and take care of, to make sure that the miraculous survival of Jetfire and her kits was more than just a lucky fluke. Now it had been over a week since then. In that time Firetooth visited the nursery every single morning and evening without fail, having mandatory check-ups on both of Jetfire's litters, making sure that everyone was safe and healthy. During those visits, there were brief moments, so short you could easily miss them, there the Medicine Cat's eyes would meet the Queen's, gazes filled with what felt like hundreds of thoughts left unsaid, before one of the kits would mewl or cry and the tom was back to his usual, no-nonsense self. But dear Starclan, there was still so much he wanted to say to her. Part of him had wondered, maybe even hoped, that the spontaneous confession had simply been a result of nearly losing his dearest friend. And yet the feelings he had for her seemed to only grow stronger now; there were times in the nursery where he had to physically hold himself back from just wrapping himself around Jetfire to comfort and cuddle with her. Despite her newborns being Bloodystar's kits in every conceivable way, every time he looked at them Firetooth thought of them as his own, and the same went for her older ones. It was dangerous to think this way, he knew. There was a reason Starclan forbid Medicine Cats from taking mates or having kits. But there was no going back anymore. Firetooth would happily risk the wrath of the heavens for Jetfire, now that he finally understood. He could only wish that she might feel the same.

Jetfire's recovery hadn't been an easy one, and for a few days everyone watched her every breath in case it stopped. It was only when the color began to return to her gums, and her milk came in that the cats around her began to relax their vigil slightly. Her newborns had finally been given back to her to nurse as her strength returned and she given each of them name. Littlekit, Sunkit, Mountainkit, Tranquilkit, and Jetkit. All named after important cats in her life thus far. All but one of the kits looked like their father, a fact that had unsettled her at first but now she hardly noticed. For even if they looked like him, they were not him. She was so grateful to have her mother and father and sister all back together again. It made her feel safe and at ease, her fears of what her parents would think slowly melting away as they nearly buried her in love and support. She was smiling and laughing more each day, the pregnancy hormones and the moons of herbs she had been fed slowly leaving her system. Yet, it was Firetooth's morning and evening checks ins that she found herself looking forward to.
It is strange how time seems so relative. Some moments dragging on for eternity while others passed faster than you could blink. How she longed to hold onto those little special moments with Firetooth for a little longer, and pass over the stretches of time in between a little faster. It was a shame really that you couldn't pick and choose what moments to savor. Even now, the brief eye contact that she made with Firetooth was over nearly before it had begun. Before she really knew what was happening, she found the two of them alone as Littlestar took her older kits out to play. Well mostly alone, the newborns being to young to really hear or understand their conversation "Firetooth... do you think they are getting enough to eat?" she nosed one of the kits back to her side when it started to cry "I'm worried that I'm not making enough milk for them. Maybe I should have let my sister nurse them a little longer...."
It wasn't the words she really wanted to say to Firetooth, not really. Her cheeks felt hot under his gaze, his confession playing on repeat in her mind. But the conversation had to get started somehow, it was just finding the words to do it
"Hmm?" Firetooth looked up from where he had been putting together a small bundle of daily herbs he had for Jetfire. For the most part, he had been easing the Queen off of the heavy painkillers and energy boosters that she had been on for most of her pregnancy to keep her strength up, slowly replacing them over the past week with far less potent substitutes as the wound in her side began to heal again...properly, this time. Without hesitation he padded over to her side, leaning down to inspect the newborns, Mountainkit letting out a small squeak feeling the tom's cold nose sniffing at him. "They look perfectly healthy and well-nourished to me," the Medicine Cat replied, sitting up straight. He glanced over at Jetfire, concern evident in his face. "Why do you think you're not making enough milk? I don't particularly see any problems, but if it bothers you, I can add a few more borage seeds to increase your milk flow." The look on her face made him wonder if there was something more to this, was there something else bothering her? Glancing around somewhat nervously, it suddenly occurred to him that the two of them were completely alone, possibly for the first time since the kitting. He wasn't sure if he should just leave, or play off whatever was going on and get back to work. Instead, he took a breath and sat down next to her, staring at her eye-to-eye. "Hey...are you alright, Jetfire? If there's something wrong, please tell me."

“Your right... the kits look fine, it’s probably just all in my head” she admitted slowly as the kit squeaked under his attention. She was still a little worried about it, the kits seemed to have to work harder to get enough milk than when she was nursing her previous litter and siblings, but back then Bloodystar made her takes so many herbs to make her milk come in early that she had an over abundance to the point it was painful when the kits weren’t nursing. So even though she had a good supply of milk, it seemed low to her
Yet even her thoughts froze for a moment when she met his gaze, her breath hitching “I..I’m fine” she managed to stutter out “Actually more than fine, it’s just” there she went again, why was it that she always felt so flustered when he was looking at her like that? “I was just thinking about what you said when I woke up... We never really got the chance to talk after that” she could feel his eyes boring into her pelt like hot irons
”Firetooth... I couldn’t give you a straight answer back then, and I’m not sure that I can now either... I can’t deny that there is something between us, but I don’t know if I understand what that is yet. I care for you a lot, and every time your around I become a flustered mess” she knew she was rambling and probably not making much sense right now “it could be love... but every time I allow myself to think that I just wind up hurt, so these feelings... They scare me Firetooth” she finally broke eyes contact looking away from Firetooth, knowing it probably wasn’t what he wanted to hear right now but she was trying to be honest “There’s a million reason why I shouldn’t feel these things about you. Your a medicine cat, and Ghostcrown’s brother. He saved me back in that fire and got me out of SunClan, the last thing I want to do is hurt him... and the. There’s the kits... and... and....”
The Medicine Cat had fallen silent throughout Jetfire's entire rant, patiently listening to her explanation, his face not giving anything away. It was still scarily easy for him to hide his true emotions from the world, a skill he had picked up back in kithood, when it felt as if the entire world had turned against him. But that wasn't what they needed right now. It wasn't what she needed. Taking a deep breath, he leaned forward to softly touch his nose to her forehead in reassurance. "It's...it's okay, Jetfire. I know you've been through a lot, and I meant it when I said that you don't have to give me an answer, now or ever. And I certainly don't expect you to have them so soon." he pulled away to look into her eyes, chuckling slightly. "Believe me, I'm confused too. I barely understand what I'm feeling or how to even proceed from here. Even if you did accept my affections, I would never be able to provide you with any more kits, or even give you pleasure in the way a mate should. Being a Medicine Cat is all I've known, and all I could ever be. But what I do know, now, is that I want to stay by your side - forever, if you'd let me - and help you raise and take care of your kits. If you'd just allow me that, Jetfire..." he rested his ginger paw on top of hers. "It would be more than enough."

She wasn't sure how this was going to work, all the what ifs, ands, and fears playing in her mind on repeat, but Jetfire did know that she wanted that to. As much as the thought of opening her heart up to Firetooth frightened her, in that moment there was only was only one way that she could answer. The word leaving her lips before her mind could catch up "Yes" such a simple word, and yet the rush of emotion behind it was like opening a flood gate.
Jetfire leaned forward until she could nuzzle against his cheek "I don't know what the future holds for us, but... I want you by my side" there was a mixture of fear and joy on her face, as the two emotions struggled in an internal battle for supremacy
He leaned into her touch, letting out a shaky breath of...relief? fear? hope? Perhaps a mix of all three. At that moment his mind couldn't help but think back to the stories Breezestep used to tell him, about how she had first met Creekghost. How his father had saved her from being harassed by rouges, and how love had slowly bloomed between them as they kept meeting at the border between Waterclan and Earthclan. Back then, his mother's stories had been met with frustration and confusion; despite his own existence being a result of their union, he couldn't fathom how a force as vague as 'love' could lead his parents to break the laws of their clans. Granted, he himself had broken...a lot of laws since then, but love had never once been a driving force behind it. It had mostly been a mix stubbornness and righteousness, but this, this was different. Maybe he finally got what his parents had wanted for him all along. "I swear I'll never leave it," Firetooth purred in reply, nuzzling Jetfire in return. "I'll do my best to take care of your family and protect them. All of them. I won't let anything hurt you ever again."

Jetfire buried her nose in his brightly colored fur, curling up against his warmth with her kits snuggled up between them nursing. He sounded so confident and sure of himself that she wanted to believe him, to just give in and give over her heart. But, she had been hurt so many times before that it was difficult. Doing so leaving her open to being hurt again. Not to mention all the reasons that she shouldn't be with him.
For now, this was enough. Just knowing that he was by her side and wanted to be with her. She didn't know what their relationship was going to look like or what it was going to turn into, but that could be sorted out later. Right now she just wanted to be with him, to feel his touch, and take in his scent. "I know you will" her eyes were slowly closing as she just savored this moment between them. She had no doubt that Firetooth would fight for her, for their family. That he would do everything in his power to keep them safe, but would that be enough? Would he really be able to keep them out of Bloodystars grasp? "You are going to be a wonderful father to our kits" she hoped it wasn't to soon, but it seemed right. He wanted to help her raise them, and she wanted that to. Firetooth was everything that she hoped that they would grow up to be, and he had been so great with her first litter as difficult as they were.
He smiled at that, glancing over to where the five newborns were suckling against their mother. "I'd say they're starting to resemble me a bit already," he meowed jokingly. "But they definitely take after you more." Being a Medicine Cat, he'd honestly never given the idea of fatherhood a second thought. But just from the time he'd spent interacting with Fawnkit, Sparrowkit, Secretkit, and even stubborn little Grumpykit to keep their health conditions in check, he had begun to feel a love and pride for them that he never knew existed, as well as a surprising fondness for the other kits of Swiftclan whom he'd normally never give a second thought. No, Firetooth would never be able to provide Jetfire with kits of his own. But perhaps he didn't need to. Jetfire's two litters were more than enough.
Though there was something he'd been wondering since the second litter's birth. "Actually, speaking of which..." he began, shifting somewhat awkwardly. "Jetfire, you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but...your first litter isn't actually Bloodystar's, are they? Both of your litters look like you, obviously, but they don't resemble each other at all."

"No, they are not" she agreed after a few moments. Not many cats knew the truth about her first litter, it had been a closely guarded secret within SunClan "When they were conceived, Bloodystar wasn't even really a part of my life, other than being the Priest Promised and the fact that he was dating my sister" she hesitated, knowing that what she would say next might change the way that Firetooth viewed her
"Not many cats know the whole truth... but I think you should know" she looked up to meet his eyes "I was only an apprentice, and myself and Silverfringe were always competing for everything. We both wanted to be the best and make our parents proud, and part of that was finding a tom worthy enough of being with the daughter of the High Priestess. We both set our eyes on the same guy, not because we cared a lot about them, but simply because they were a Janus, related to the previous High Priestess, and close to our age. For once I just wanted to beat her in something... So I fought hard for his affections, even knowing that he was dating both of at the same time. I know now how stupid that was..." her eyes fell feeling her cheeks flush with embarrassment
"The day I found out I was pregnant I went to him to tell him. I was so excited, thinking that I had won this little contest of ours. Yet when I found him with Silverfringe and explained, he said that he had already chosen to be with Silverfringe and that she was carrying his kits. He denied that the kits I was carrying with his... It hurt, but not nearly so bad as when my sister believed his lies. Believed that I was just making up things to try and get in-between them. I was very upset, and in a dark place. I was terrified of my mother finding out that I was pregnant, and that the father wanted nothing to do with them much less the truth of what had really happened. So I tried to steer clear of my mother, and hid the pregnancy for as long as I could."
"It was around this time that Satinlights...indigopastels... went missing. She had been out on a walk with my mother and Bloodystar and she fell into the river. We all searched for moons, and it was during this time that I first really started to deal with Bloodystar. He was so desperate to find her, and I could see the agony that he was going through. We bonded over our grief... he for his mate, and me for my sister. It was only after we found what we thought was her body on MoonClan's territory that we began to really talk.. My kits had no father figure, and he lost both his mate and his unborn litter. What happened next seemed like the logical solution even though there was no feelings between us. He asked if he could claim my litter as his own. He wanted to be a father so badly, and I felt like in agreeing to the arrangement that I would be honoring my dead sister and helping my grieving clan-mate. It would make my mother happy to have someone of such a high rank as the father to the kits, and my kits would get to grow up with a father. I made it clear that I had no feelings for him, and at the time I thought he understood...I didn't know... I just didn't know what kind of cat Bloodystar really was, or what was to come" Jetfire was starting to cry now, the memories of all that had transpired stirring up pain that she had tried for so long to forget "I was so mouse-brained.. I should have known... I should have never agreed to allow him into my life"
Jetfire's explanation had left Firetooth with just as many questions as it did answers. But there were more important things to worry about before unpacking all of that. When the Queen began to cry, he immediately wrapped himself around her, pulling her in close to his chest. "Hey, Hey...it's not your fault. None of it. I mean...competing with your sister over a tom you didn't even love was pretty mousebrained, but I've done a lot of stupid stuff when I was younger too, so I'd be a hypocrite to judge you for it. But please remember that what happened with Bloodystar was never your fault, and you should never blame yourself for it. You were doing what you thought was best for your kits. How on earth could you have known his true nature, if he sincerely loved Indigopastels the way you said he did?" Now that was the part he seriously couldn't wrap his head around. The way Jetfire described it, her entire thought process around taking Bloodystar as a mate was sound and rational, with the Sunclan leader both willing and happy to claim someone else's kits as his own. So what exactly had gone wrong? Did Jetfire remind Bloodystar too much of his believed-to-be-deceased mate? Could he not handle the the fact that the kits weren't his like he thought he could? Or had it been something else entirely to push him off the deep end, like the destruction of the Sun God which Firetooth was partially responsible for? Perhaps they'd never know the reason why. And did it even matter? Nothing could ever excuse the way Bloodystar had treated her, and he'd hopefully rot one day because of it. "I apologize for bringing up bad memories, Jetfire. It was never my intention to do so. It's just part of my Medical training to know how to spot differently sired kits. What was his name? I can send him a message that his kits are alive and safe, if you want me to."

The silver queen snuggle into Firetooth's chest, her nose buried in his warm fur as her sobs started to slow. It wasn't the first time a cat had told her that this wasn't her fault, but until now their words always felt so empty and hollow. Coming from him, she could start to believe it. To let some of guilt that had been eating away at her bit by bit slowly start to fade. How was it that his words reached her, when she couldn't even convince herself.
"It's ok... its something that you should know" her voice was soft as she spoke "Firetooth.... I don't want to hide anything from you, even though it hurts to think back to that time" she paused letting her chin rest on his chest, though she couldn't hide the sadness in her voice "I will answer whatever questions you have the best that I can. If you are going to be at my side you should at least know what you are up against. The monsters of my past that could come back to haunt our future..." she trembled slightly when she spoke next, the scent of fear coming off of her in waves "Bloodystar has an army at his disposal... If he were to ever find out that I..." she looked down to the newborns at their side "they... were here, he will stop at nothing to drag us back"
"I would rather their father not know... they are still in SunClan, and he and my sister have kits of their own now. Not only would they deny that these kits are theirs, but it might put strain on their relationship. It would also put me and the kits in danger..." she looked up "their loyalty is to themselves only, and they wouldn't hesitate to reveal our location to save themselves"
The Medicine Cat let out a snort, grinning proudly. "What? You really think I'm scared of Bloodystar? The last time he threatened me, I whacked him upside the head with a dead squirrel." Definitely one of his fondest memories; sure, Sunclan nearly overwhelmed Swiftclan and would've killed them all if it weren't for Chim bringing in reinforcements, but the look on the High Priest's face when he saw a squirrel flying at him was a picture Firetooth would treasure for the rest of his days. "Jokes aside though...who says Bloodystar will ever find out about them?" he gestured towards the newborns sleeping against Jetfire. "You were so early along when we rescued you that he definitely couldn't have been aware you were pregnant. The only cats who know their true parentage are you, me, Ghostcrown, Indigopastels, and your parents. Your family aren't going to tell him, and neither would I or my brother. For all intents and purposes, Swiftclan can believe these kits are mine. And...if you wish, we can have Beestar or Cradlegrave change your name, like Indigopastels did."

Despite the seriousness of the conversation, she couldn't help but laugh at the image of Bloodystar being slapped by a squirrel. He had never brought it up, though it was clear to see why, it was probably a rather embarrassing moment for him and she wanted to ask more about it, but what Firetooth said next stopped her in her tracks "Firetooth... I couldn't ask you to do that" she felt her cheeks grow hot
"I want you by my side, and I would be honored and overjoyed to have you help me raise these kits..." her eyes falling to the ground "but you shouldn't claim them as yours... You are a medicine cat, and..." she wasn't sure what to tell him everything that was on her mind. The storied ghostcrown had told her about his brother, and how much he valued the medicine cat code... "if you do this you'll be mocked for breaking the code, if not worse..."
"Let them. Jetfire, I killed a god once. I've actually broken more aspects of the warrior code than I can count. Do you really think I care what other cats think about me?" Firetooth slowly lowered himself to lay by Jetfire's side, curling his tail protectively around her and her kits. "They can say and think what they want, I don't care. Because my ancestors and my father in Starclan will know the truth. Because our families will know the truth. Because we will know the truth; that we're doing this to protect your kits, which, in my opinion, is the most noble thing we can do for them. If you want, we can tell them the truth when they come of age: that their father was a horrible tom who hurt you, and that's all they'll ever need to know. We can start a new life, Jetfire...together, as a family. I think we've both gone long enough without one."

Jetfire leaned into his warmth, as Firetooth curled around them resting her head on his shoulder. It was the words that she had wanted to hear, so why were the so hard to accept? "I want that..." she nuzzled into his fur, as she tried to figure out how to say the words that were on her heart "The fact that you are willing to do this for me means a lot, but in allowing you to do that it is like I am making the same mistake that I had with Ghostcrown" she paused knowing hearing about his brother was probably not what he wanted to talk about "He sacrificed so much for me, and even though I never asked it of him he came to resent me for it. I don't want that to happen with you Firetooth, I couldn't handle loosing you" she swallowed hard, remembering the pain on his face when he told her about Raypaw...
"Firetooth, I don't want to be the cat you have to protect. I want to be your mate, your partner in life. To be able to stand by your side with my head held high"
Firetooth let out a sigh, leaning forward to lick Jetfire softly on the forehead. "You know that Ghostcrown has never regretted saving you. He obviously has a right to be upset about what happened - though to be fair I don't think anyone could've predicted the camp being up in flames when we showed up - but despite the mixed-emotions of it all, he has nothing but love for you and has never for a moment blamed you for anything. Please don't ever doubt that." He and Ghostcrown hadn't ever really talked about it, but the Medicine Cat was certain of it nevertheless. He knew his brother almost as well as he knew himself.
He was content to leave it at that, however, Jetfire's next words gave him pause. "I want to be your mate, your partner in life." It was the first time since the beginning of the conversation that she had said it outright. He smiled to himself, resting his chin on top of her head. "Oh you definitely don't need to worry about that. I can't hunt or fight, remember? I hope you're prepared to be my full-time bodyguard when you heal up...because a dead squirrel probably isn't the best form of defense in the world."
