Silverhydrangea was pleasantly surprised to have become a mentor, but if his apprentice had any interest in actually learning something she was going to have an unpleasant surprise awaiting her. Silverhydrangea spent most of his time as a garden keeper admiring all the pretty flowers rather than actually... well, actually he wasn't totally sure what garden keepers were supposed to do. He'd never been openly admonished for his ways yet, though, so he figured that his appreciation of the beauty of nature must be helping the clan in some way and as such had plotted out a very exciting "training session" for Dahliapaw that would include admiring the herbs in the garden, admiring the flowers in the wildflower meadow, and maybe if they had some time left over they could admire the waves on the Southern Sea for good measure.
"Oh, Dahliapaw," he called into the apprentice den as the sun crested the horizon, birds twittering cheerily in the trees with no warning of the pain that fate would have in store for him today. "Are you ready to get going?"
It had been hard for Dahliapaw to sleep that night. Unlike the other recently promoted apprentices, it wasn't the excitement of promotion that kept her awake, but the terror of everything that had happened. She wished that everything had just been a dream, that her father, Goldenshadow - no, she supposed his new name was Foolsgold now - hadn't been made into a prisoner and servant. She still refused to believe the stories of what her father had done. She was supposed to be the troublemaker in their little family, but was this how Goldenshadow - Foolsgold - had felt whenever she got in trouble? Denying reality because of the familial love?
Dahliapaw would have loved to stay like that all day, in bed wondering over recent events. Maybe even get a wink of sleep. She had just begun closing her eyes again when the voice of her new mentor reached her ears. Oh yeah, that's right. She was an apprentice now. She actually had to do stuff. With a nearly silent groan, the she-cat stood up, rubbing her sleep deprived eyes before heading out of the den to meet her mentor. Not like anything things could get even worse, right? "Yeah, sure," she replied, sounding none too eager.
Dahliapaw's eagerness, or lack thereof, was lost on her mentor, who greeted her with a sunny smile and led her out of camp with an enthusiastic bounce in his step. "So a garden keeper's job is to pay attention to all the plants in the territory," he told her, which was true but not exactly in the way he meant it. "So I'm gonna take you around and show you all the different kinds of plants!" he said as they exited the camp and entered the deep lands, sunlight and shadows passing in alternating dapples over their pelts.
"Like this, see, this is a snowdrop," Silverhydrangea gestured to a clump of delicate white flowers. "And this," he said, waving his tail to towards what was definitely not a huckleberry plant, "This is a huckleberry plant! See those little red berries? You can eat them," he explained, plucking a red berry off of the plant into his mouth to demonstrate and frowning a little as an unfamiliar taste filled his mouth. "Huh," said Silverhydrangea. "This doesn't taste how I remember it."
It didn't take long for Dahliapaw to begin doubted her mentor's capabilities, but she stayed quiet for the most part and followed him, giving a nod every now and then to make it seem like she was paying full attention. Her mind was elsewhere, and she was mostly spaced out, up until Silverhydrangea popped a berry into his mouth. That's when she had snapped out of her thoughts, her head tilting to the side to look at the berries. Vaguely, she recalled being told not to eat a type of berry that looked like that, but she must have remembered wrong. Her mentor may not seem like the most capable, but surely he knew better than to eat something dangerous, right?
Or so she told herself, only to pause when he spoke again. "Are... Are you sure that wasn't poisonous?" she asked, her eyes narrowing slightly with suspicion.
