They slipped past the towering spines of glimmering crystals, his eyes tracing them with a particularly entranced expression. The colors cast iridescent, shimmering lights on their pelt when he would wander by them. But, with a last reminder to themself, they wasn't here for that. Shaking out his pelt in slight frustrating, he began to part his mouth, drawing in the scents around him. The air tasted like damp earth, and held a tang of chilly mildew. But then, there was another scent. Aha. The warm scent of blood, and flesh, and atop that, the pelt of probably a shrew. They wandered far enough down, sometimes, and his stomach almost made a lingering growl. Almost.
Exolas let out a small, controlled breath as he padded as silent as a ghost towards his target. He appeared almost to be a deadly, ghostly force padding without the slightest of tremor or sound. His paws glided easily over stone, his pace even and slow. They could hear the little squeaks now, his whiskers trembling slightly with excitement. Crouching low, they sat quietly, before lifting themselves up and onto a stone. The blind little rodent was there, clutching some stems and seeds in its paws, and eating away. He would almost pit it, if not for the fact that the Regime would welcome food.
Dispatching the prey was quick, and effortless. They carried it dangling in his jaws with a rather proud expression, tail raising high above their head excitedly. And he passed, again, through the sea of glass-like stones, casting their eery light upon their pelt once more.
Hunting had been difficult as of late. Blame it on the winter, or just bad luck, but there had been a shocking amount of scarcity of prey in recent moons. Of course, many cats had been worked to the bone and any sort of relief had become painfully rare, but that in Don's eyes that just made it all the more reason to at least try and hunt at the more visually appealing locations.
The large crystal structures caught his eyes in the same way they entranced Exolas, and the tom having been admittedly more engaged in enjoying the atmosphere than hunting, when he happened to stumble across Exolas in the tunnels. Noticing the other tom and the shrew in his maw, Don gave a friendly wave of his tail in greeting. "Good catch! I'm sure the group will be excited to see more fresh prey. Maybe it means the hunting prospects are looking up!" He said, his compliment intermingled with what could almost be considered naive optimism.

They gave the tom a polite smile -- or, as much as he could possibly manage around his mouthful. Exolas set it down carefully and gave his lips a few licks as he responded, "That, or luck. Though I have noticed the usual chill of the caverns is beginning to lift. So, it could mean that the leaves are going to begin to bud soon." His voice sounded wistful, his eyes swimming with a longing to go and observe the change of seasons himself.
"I really hope so. I'm getting sick of the cold and the slog of hunting in it." Don said, an equal longing for the warm weather equally present in the scout's voice. "Winter hunting a nice sucky mix of feeling like you're hunting for hours for no reason, only to barely drag something home and start all over again without break. Feels like the very definition of insanity."

They nodded in agreement to his sentiments, making a sort of snort and a roll of his eyes as he added, "Not to mention, the caverns are already cold enough as it is sometimes. Which also means more trouble with water sources freezing, or more prey going deeper to escape the chill." A small shudder drew up his spine, and he couldn't help it when he said, "I just miss the smell of grass, or a warm breeze on my fur. Everything is so still down here, that sometimes you feel as if you'll turn to stone yourself."
"Yeah. And then of course the deeper you go the more you have to deal with other predators, and they're just as desperate as we are. Which isn't a great mix." Don agreed, before giving a sympathetic nod to Exolas' sentiment. "It's one of the boons to being a scout that you actually get to sometimes go up on the surface but uh, recently I've found there's better hunting down here than up there. Which sucks. I'd personally rather be hunting in the grass than in stone, more a matter of personal prefrence to be honest. Although, will say, the crystals are super pretty. That's one good thing." Don added on, trying to look on the bright side.

They hummed in agreement, casting his gaze to the brilliantly colored crystal and smiling slightly. Maybe at the fond tickle of a past memory, leaving him feeling a pain of loss for the first time in a while since he'd joined. With a hint of a sigh he said, "The one upside of being a busy Mercenary. You get to marvel the beauty of the tunnels, and their secrets. Almost makes you wish everyone else could have seen these."
He trailed off for a moment, before shaking himself from his reverie and smiled a bit playfully. "Have you seen the abandoned city? Its buried a bit into the caverns, but it is truly something to marvel at. I've only set paw there once to patrol and look for prey, but I didn't stay too long. It's a bit ominous, in a way. Twoleg's are much larger than us, and yet something drove them form their home."
"More than I'd like to admit, actually. Me and my brother and sister were stupid once and a while as cadets and risked our lives down there a bit more than we should have. You're not really suppose to goof off down there but you know, kids will be kids." Don admitted, a bit of guilt intermixed with what was clearly fond reminiscing.
"I never really thought much about it though. It's a neat place, but you're right, really darn ominous even without thinking about the whole two-leg thing. It's easy to get yourself really hurt there if you're not careful, lots of things that are one the edge of falling and a lot of dangerous animals that stalk the place on the worst of occasions."

Exolas couldn't help but chuckle, his eyes flickering with amusement as he nodded along to the story. "I suppose the only difference for me is that I wasn't entirely young, and that I had been alone," they said, his tail flicking slightly. He bent then, to grab his morsel again and mumbled around his prey, "I should probably return to deposit this. But your welcome to accompany me, on the way, if you'd like. I haven't had a proper conversation in a while, admittedly. And Alurela doesn't count because she's entirely too chaotic, and drains my energy."
"Sure, I'll come along. Nice to have company that isn't just my family for a while. Not that I don't enjoy talking with them, but since things started getting rough this winter they're pretty much the only cats I have been talking too, and that's just because my older brother makes us plan out time for each other." Don said, more grateful than he would have liked to admit to have a conversation with someone else and a bit of a change in pace. His life had been more or less the same going like clockwork, something that had been practically driving the tom crazy.
"By the way, not to pry, but whose Alurela? I've never met her. Is she friend, family, or...?" Don asked, a casual curiosity underlying his tone.

"I do miss the company of others, on occasion. I guess it doesn't entirely get to me though, because the Regime isn't all that much different from my previous home. I suppose my sense for adventure and my love of socializing isn't as strong as it once was," Exolas chuckled fondly, thinking of his sister and how bossy she had been in demanding to spend time with him, outside of studies.
And then his heart ached a little at the thoughts, so he pushed the thought gently away, sighing at the question. "She's a friend. More like an annoying sibling that I can't be rid of, but in the sense that we're not blood-tied. Alurela reminds me of my older sister, but a bit more... enthusiastic. I guess you could say I keep her from trouble," he responded, a genuinely exhausted expression crossing his face at the mention of the feline. "Unless you like daily adventures and hijinks, I'd suggest approaching her with caution."
"Actually sounds like the type of person my older brother would get along with. Third eldest, I mean. I may have more sibling than I know what to do with." Don said with a small laugh, but took a moment to fully consider what the tom had mentioned prior.
"So, where did you live before the Regime? Were you just a loner? Again, not to pry but like, I've never really traveled outside of the Regime or the clan territories except on the rarest of occasions. I'm kind of curious what's out there if I'm being honest. Don't really know much of what it's like outside of the clans and groups around here." The tom inquired, trying not to press too hard but clearly interested in the prospect of learning more about what laid outside the common borders.

He chuckled slightly, his eyes dancing with amusement as he said, "I sincerely wish him luck." And then, they seemed to consider their answer to the question for a moment, whiskers twitching thoughtfully. He tended not to chat much about his past, his body shifting to a more careful posture.
"Well, I didn't come from the Clans, or anything else in affiliation around us. If anything, it was a self proclaimed rogue band. Not nearly as big as any of the Clans or the Regime; but moderate enough. We didn't live quite as organized," he finally said, feeling it wasn't any harm to chat about that. And then, with a more sour note to his voice, he added, "It was somewhat like the Regime, though, in the sense that it was very... strict. Although, strict in a sense that it put the Regime to shame."
Don gave a small, steady nod, smart enough to catch the vocal cue and acknowledge that, wherever the tom originated, there was likely a good reason he left. Taking note of that, the tom clearly attempted to slightly lighten the topic, though following the same train of thought. "Ah, well, to be fair, as strict as the Regime is, I know it could be a lot stricter. I've heard at other times other clans and groups have put the Regime to shame with it too, and if what my eldest brother says is true, a lot of clans and groups have gotten more structured lately. Maybe just how things change with time I guess, but I was never really around when it wasn't like that so I can't say for sure."
"But I do think we're lucky to have more freedom." Don said, after a small moment of consideration. "Stifle freedom and you stifle a lot of creativity, and stop a lot of cats from figuring out things that might have otherwise tried if they'd got the oppertunity to try. I mean ironically the Regime lets us chose our own jobs, even the clans don't get that luxury. Like, I'd hate to imagine my second eldest brother as a scout, or so help me as a mercenary. He's a helluva guider, though."

He couldn't help but laugh, his ears flicking slightly with a sort of amusement, glad to be rid of talking of his past. "I suppose your right. I guess I couldn't say I have much experience, as I've not been affiliated with any Clans. I don't believe I've ever attended a gathering, either. So in reality, I've only ever heard tales of them. A part of me is curious to know what they are really like, but it's mostly just a small interest. Like the way you would find prey, or something different from you interesting."
"The only way I know about them is word of mouth. I know all of them are different to some extent but... Some definently more different than others. Again, my brother knows more about them than me, but also only from word of mouth -- I think. He can tell you a lot about them, but I think he's just well studied." Don explained. "I know we have a lot of cats in the Regime that use to be part of clans or have family in them, but I've never really been close to anyone like that. I think it would be interesting to get to know someone who does though, if just to know a bit more about things outside the Regime."
