[Time skip after this point] ----------------------------------------------------------- Some time had passed since Jetfire's kitting. Littlestar, Vixenkismet, and Firetooth working tirelessly to stabilize the dying queen, and deliver the rest of kits into this world. Five kits had lived, two of them being born to small and underdeveloped to be able to make it never drawing their first breath. The living kits had been tucked into the curve of Indigopastel's belly to nurse, the two deceased covered respectfully and set aside out of Jetfires sight for the time being. They had managed to stop the bleeding and get the den cleaned up, but it didn't mean that her or the kits were out of the woods just yet. Jetfire had lost a lot blood and the kits were still so tiny that they needed to under constant supervision and care.
Firetooth had fallen asleep in Jetfire's nest curled up around the delicate she-cat, refusing to leave her side for even a moment even though her color and breathing were improving, her heart beat going strong. At least if her condition changed, it would awaken Firetooth. She hadn't been sure what to think of Firetooth, but seeing the way he looked at her daughter it was clear to see how deeply had fallen for her. It was the same look she saw in Skipsteps eyes when he looked at her, and she no doubt that he would die trying to save Jetfire.
Littlestar has stayed awake for as long as she could, but eventually exhaustion had taken her over as well. The journey to SwiftClan had been long and hard, then faced with hours of fighting for every breath her daughter took. She and Skipstep curled up together on the cold ground beside of Indigopastel's nest, on paw stretched out and wrapped in her daughters long fur as if she would disappear and be gone when she awakened. This kept her close to the newborns and the daughter she thought she had lost long ago. It had overjoyed her to see Satinlights again, though it was confusing. What happened all those many moons ago? How had she survived? So many questions left unanswered, but for now this simple touch was enough. A reassurance that this was real, and not a hallucination. Foxbane sleeping close by with her other paw touching Littlestar's other paw
------------> Everyone was still asleep when Jetfire's eyes fluttered open for the first time since the kitting. The first sight that greeted her was her family all curled up and sleeping together. Mom? Dad? that much made sense, she had longed to see them that it wasn't the first time that she had dreamed of them. But why was Foxbane here? and who were the kits nursing from her sister? Those were not her kits.... Her mind was foggy and confused, the scattered memories of early not quite fitting together to form a cohesive story. Wait... were those her kits? Where was Ghostcrown?Firetooth?
She slowly lifted her head, to numb to feel the warmth behind her until she moved. She blinked groggily, realizing that it was firetooth who was in her nest on one side and Ghostcrown on the other. She slowly lowered her head once more, doing her best not to wake them or the others as her clouded mind tried to figure out what had happened
While they all slept soundly Bloomingkit had suck into the nursery, awoken by the rising sun. She had originally just come looking for her mother, having woken up to Lionblood in her place instead. She hadn't expected to see the den so crowded with her mom nursing more kits. Her expression twisted in confusion at the sight but the she-kit shrugged it off easily. Looking at the opportunity before her she smiled, unable to pass it up.
Immediately she went to work, braiding flowers of all different colors into the fur of the sleeping cats, for Satinlights, Littlestar and Skipstep it was easy to braid in violets and bits of lavender, but for the sleeker furred cats like Jetfire it was trickier, all she could do was stick them into her fur and hoped they stayed, she even took extra care, to cover the queen's bloodied flank with a beautiful floral arrangement. Jetfire was going to be hurting when she woke up Bloomingkit knew that much, but that didn't mean any of the cats here had to look as bad as they felt.

It was almost like a dream, and perhaps it was. It certainly seemed unreal enough, her parents her, kits she didn't know and all the... flowers? Yeah Jetfire really wanted to believe this was some sort of dream. Was this is what it was like to be on the isle? She had always heard that when you died you would get to be reunited with your lost family members. But hadn't Firetooth promised her mother was alive? and Firetooth should be alive to...and her kits? had they all died as well? She squeezed her eyes together trying to make sense of all this, but no explanation that she had come up with got her any closer to figuring out the solution to the thoughts that plagued her "Firetooth..." she murmured softly her blue eyes staring into his his "did we both die?" she asked. If they were both here than who was back in swiftclan taking care of her kits?GidgetGal
Sleep hadn't come easy for him. His consciousness drifted in and out of dreaming like the waves, total exhaustion pulling his mind into darkness before night terrors out of worry for Jetfire woke him back up again. There were periods of what felt like hours where Firetooth simply laid there wide awake, not daring to move even an inch in case the Queen's condition suddenly took a turn for the worse again. He wasn't even sure what time it was anymore, or how many days had passed; outside of the small group napping peacefully around him, no other cat even dared to enter the Medicine Den. At some point the petite warrior Tinybreath had set down some fresh wet moss just outside the den's entrance, letting out a sigh of relief when she noticed Jetfire breathing, with Indigopastel nursing the newborn kits. It took the Medicine Cat a moment to recall that Tinybreath herself had lost a sister in kitting, and had been forced to raise her nieces alone. Firetooth gave her a curt nod of thanks before sleep overtook him once again.
It was movement that slowly pushed him back to wakefulness. Firetooth lifted his head slowly, blinking in delayed surprise as he found himself unexpectedly covered in flowers. The suspicious giggling of a kit outside gave more than enough hint as to who was responsible, but in his exhaustion he let the matter go for now, a brightly-colored flower falling off of his shoulder as Jetfire shifted to face him. He let out a breath he didn't even know he had been holding. "You're not dead, Jetfire," he answered, adding in a silent thank Starclan before leaning forward to nuzzle beneath her chin. "You're alive. You're alive."

A dream then? she thought, as Firetooth's muzzle came under hers in a gentle nuzzle. No that was definitely real, her eyes closing even the gentle movement enough to send her mind spinning but not wanting him to pull away "it worked then..." her voice was soft as she let the weight of her head rest on his "There were these three kits, and they wanted me to come with them to the isle" her voice was sleepy and dreamy "They were so excited to see me, but..."
Jetfire paused, her eyes slowly opening "I could hear my sister calling for me, and Ghostcrown... and...You" the words she heard were fragmented, but Firetooths message and been clear enough
I-I can't do this, Ghostcrown! I can't lose her like this! I CAN'T! PLEASE, JETFIRE! STAY WITH US! WITH YOUR KITS! WITH ME! PLEASE!"
"I told them that I wasn't ready to go yet, that I had to come back... They tried to stop me but, I just kept running toward your voice until everything went dark"
Her words gave him momentary pause. The spirits had tried to stop her? Did that mean Jetfire was supposed to die last night? Did he and Littlestar actually manage to defy fate itself? Good grief, at the rate he was going, he half-expected the Sun God to put some sort of spiritual bounty on his head or something when he finally kicked the bucket. But that was an existential crisis for another time, it was probably best to focus on the current one for now.
Firetooth pushed his muzzle deeper into her pelt, taking in her scent. "We...I thought I'd lost you," he finally admitted, his voice somewhat muffled by the fur. He didn't have the strength to look her in the eyes. Not for this. "I'm supposed to be Swiftclan's Medicine Cat, but if it wasn't for your mother showing up when she did..." The tom squeezed his eyes shut at the memory, shaking his head lightly. "When you were talking about dying for your kits, when you stopped responding...I-I don't know, I just panicked. I'm not supposed to do that. I've never done that. You needed me, and I almost failed you. I'm so sorry, Jetfire..."

Her mother... Jetfire's eyes drifted over to when her mother and father lied sleeping peacefully beside of her sister. She had thought her sister had been dead for so long, drown in the river she had fallen into. Her mother, captured and killed when the fire nation attacked SunClan's camp. Now it seemed as if it was her turn to return from the assumed ranks of the dead
"Firetooth" she mewed his name softly "You have nothing to apologize for"
She paused trying to stop the swimming in her head "If you hadn't called for me like that, I don't think I could have found my way back" she wasn't sure if what she saw had just been a dream or if had been a hallucination, but of that much she was certain.. I didn't want to come back... It was thought she had that was better off left unsaid. How could she explain that it was him that she had returned for? It was him that had make her embrace the immense physical pain she would have to endure by coming back, turning her back on the warmth and comfort the isle offered. The two of them had grown close lately, but the way he called was more than simply grieving over the loss of a friend... It was something more than that, a feeling that she couldn't really describe or put a label on. When called for her, it was like he reached out and touched her soul.
"It was your words that I chased, your tone that gave me strength, and your voice that brought me back" despite everything she smiled a little "How many other medicine cats do you know, that can say they can bring someone back from the dead?"
"I don't know if she counts as a Medicine Cat, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if Glowstar managed to swing it at least once." In spite of everything that had happened, Firetooth couldn't help but deadpan a joke, smiling softly with a breathy chuckle as he pulled away to look at Jetfire's face. He felt his face flush beneath his fur at the realization that it had been his words that drew her back. Not his brother's. His. It finally struck him why this situation felt so odd, and yet so comforting. Every other time he attempted to comfort her, it had been Ghostcrown that she actually wanted, not him. Even now the Medicine Cat half expected Jetfire to turn away and instead curl up at his brother's side, but she didn't. She wanted him here, by her side. It was everything he had ever wanted, but still not enough.
For a few moments, they just laid there in comfortable silence, before Firetooth suddenly took a deep breath.
"I love you, Jetfire."
That was why. Why he had refused to give up on her, when she wanted to give up on herself. Why he woke up at the rise of dawn every morning, doing double the work of normal Medicine Cats in order to give her and her kits the care they needed. Why he'd been so ready to attack the Huntress for insulting her, and why he was so certain he'd give his life for her without hesitation. And the reason why Starclan so clearly looked down on such relationships for Medicine Cats, because in his total and absolute panic and heartbreak he had forgotten his duty as a healer and nearly lost her.
"I shouldn't. I'm not supposed to. But when I thought you died...it felt like a part of me was about to die with you. I don't think I can live without you, Jetfire. I don't want to live without you."
Beestripe was doing his rounds, checking on all the clanmates he loved so much when he overheard Firetooth's voice. The leader drew closer, curious as to what was going on but not wanting to intrude.
That's...definitely against the code. But who was he to judge? He'd denounced his own clan after all. Nope, not his business. But what really bothered him was...
I'm pretty sure this is cheating. Isn't Firetooth supposed to be with Chimerastar?
You know what? Nope. Also not his business. The dark tabby turned around and walked away immediately. He could bother his medicine cat about being faithful another time.

In the peaceful silence, Jetfire's eyes had slowly closed still exhausted, simply speaking sapping her energy away. Her head resting on the medicine cat's paws with her cheek against his, content just to simply listen to the sound of his steady breathing. Having him so close made her feel safe, and she would have snuggled in closer had her body not bee to numb to respond to her commands She was almost asleep when his words reached her ears
"I love you, Jetfire"
Her eyelids snapped open in surprise, as he continued
"I shouldn't. I'm not supposed to. But when I thought you died...it felt like a part of me was about to die with you. I don't think I can live without you, Jetfire. I don't want to live without you."
Jetfire was quiet for a moment, almost believing she had only imagined him saying the first part. Wishful thinking? But then he kept going, and there was no doubt in her mind that he meant every word of what he had just said, and to be honest she had to agree. She wasn't sure when or how it had happened, but she had fallen for the medicine cat "Firetooth...I..." she stammered, heat rushing to her cheeks as she tried to put words to the emotions she was feeling "me to, but..I...You..." she knew she wasn't making any sense but trying to form words right now had been hard enough without her being flustered "What about Ghostcrown? He...We... He'll be hurt... and Chimerastar?"
That was...not exactly the response he had been expecting, as much as he could say he had been expecting any sort of response at all. Firetooth hadn't exactly been planning on confessing his newfound feelings for Jetfire today...or ever, if he was being completely honest. He could only make out a few words in-between her cute flustered stammering, though cast a weary glance at his brother's sleeping form he was brought up. Perhaps the Medicine Cat was being a bit unfair in thinking so, but Ghostcrown already had his chance with Jetfire; every single time the Queen had begged for Ghostcrown's comfort, the other tom had fallen short, even before his ex had shown up. He was about to answer her when... "And Chimerastar?"
Firetooth pulled back, staring at Jetfire blankly for a moment before letting out a groan. "Please don't tell me you bought into that rumor too," he meowed, raising a paw to his face to hide his growing blush. "Chimerastar and I are NOT mates. I don't even know where that rumor came from; like how in Starclan's name does someone even jump to that conclusion?! The guy literally hates me! A-and I mean, I guess Chim's pretty hot and handsome and whatever, but the whole proposal thing was just supposed to be a joke! I swear!"
Taking a breath to calm himself before he accidently started ranting about Chimerastar...again...Firetooth leaned forward to touch noses with Jetfire and sighed. "But that's beside the point. You don't have to give me an answer right now, or even ever. I-I just wanted to get that off of my chest, I guess. If Ghostcrown's who you want, then I'll happily support you both, and I'm more than positive he'd do the same for me. It's not up to me or him. This is your choice, Jetfire. Regardless, we are your family, and we'll always be here for you."

Jetfire was flustered her cheeks hot, no she hadn't bought into the rumors about Firetooth and Chimerastar but in the moment her mind was scattered and fragmented and what was supposed to have been a joke came out more like a serious question, but before she could answer a voice from across the den cut off her stammering "Jetfire" the she-cat's eyes fell upon her mother who was clumsily clambering to her feet from the pile of sleeping cats
Jetfire swallowed hard "mom..." the last time she had seen Littlestar she had been imprisoned by Bloodystar, while he paraded her around like some sort of prize. She had been placed in complete isolation, tied to the wall of cave like some sort of monster, beaten, and broken with blood dried onto her forehead unable to clean her coat. It had broken her heart to see her like that, and instead of helping? She had played along with Blodystars game, pretending to be the doting mate he had wanted her to be so that he could only cut her deeper. Paraded her in front of her entire family to show them what it could be like if they would just accept him as their High Priest. Would her mother and father hate her? Especially now that she had just given birth to his kits...
"I'm sorry mom" Jetfire was nearly in tears as he mother pulled her into a gentle embrace
"Shh... You don't have to explain anything" Littlestar mummered softly grooming her daughters "You are alive, you are safe, and that is all that matters right now. You did what you had to, and that isn't going to change how much me and you father love you" there was nothing but love in her mothers eyes, not even a trace of resentment or anger "Jetfire there is nothing you could say or do to change that" Jetclaw
Skipstep stirred awake as Littlestar got up. Skipstep's fur was nowhere near as long as his mate's. So he immediately noted the lack of warmth as she pulled away. A shiver went through the tom, though his ears pricked forward catching the snippets of the conversation.
He muffled a yawn as he sat up, looking to his daughter, expression soft. "Your mother's right," He said. "We love you Jetfire, no matter what happens, we'll always love you."
