Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
The full moon was slowly falling down towards the horizon, barely visible through the storm a clouds from which a light powdery snow was falling. A deafening silence had fallen upon SwiftClan's camp, and what few soft sounds could be heard were largely absorbed by the snow covered ground. Jetfire curled up tighter in the nest that had been prepared for her in Firetooth's den, it felt strange not to have her kits curled up at her side. Her sister and some of the other queens had offered to watch them, when her health began to take a turn for the worse as the pregnancy began to near its end. The rapid growth and movement of the kits that she was carrying putting her at risk, and Firetooth had insisted that she be put on strict nest rest until the kits had arrived. She had agreed to follow his orders, but on the condition that he go to the gathering tonight and try to contact her family. To tell them that she was here... Hoping to see them at least one more time before the kits were born, the reality that this kitting could kill her setting in like a weight upon her heart. Firetooth had been gone most of the night, and should be returning back to SwiftClan at any time.
Jetfire shifted uncomfortably in her nest, unable to get settled despite her herbs she had been given to manage her pain. They were starting to wear off, as she could feel the kits kicking and squirming. They were lively tonight, and even though it hurt she was just glad to know that they were ok. It was very different from her last pregnancy in which towards the end they had almost ceased moving all together. She rolled slightly, a sharp pain suddenly shooting through her side as the metallic scent reached her nose. Something was wrong. Panic creeping into her voice as she called for help
((I tried to keep any gore to a minimum. Jetfire is internally bleeding because where her old scar from her c-section has burst open. Throughout the thread she is going to slowly be fading away but this is mainly going to be focused on reactions rather than the gore, so that we can have some drama. I promise I will behave XD GidgetGalCleaver))
In the end, Ghostcrown had decided not to go to the gathering. He didn't have the energy to deal with the endless bickering of the clans and most of the cats he cared about were here, in SwiftClan. If his son made an appearance, he trusted his brother would bring Crow back to the clan with them, if he was willing to come with. And he had promised in return to stay near the medicine cat's den and keep an eye on their mutual friend.
Ghostcrown jerked away at Jetfire's cry. He had dozed off now far from her, giving just enough distance that she would have some privacy, but more than close enough to hear her call out. He scrambled to his paws and was darting to her side before he was fully awake, looking her up and down a few times before it registered what he was supposed to be doing.
"What's wrong? Are they coming?" His ears flattened and he looked back toward the camp entrance. Firetooth had to be returning soon, right? He didn't know how to handle kitting, he wasn't even there when his kits were born, and he had certainly not prepared to be her sole caretaker for this. Ghostcrown's mouth parted and he was startled by the sharp scent of blood. That meant they were coming now, right? What was he supposed to do?! What had Firetooth told him?

It was only a moment before Ghostcrown was at her side, but it felt like an eternity waiting there alone in her nest with her thoughts. She couldn't remember much of her last kitting, but there was no doubt in her mind that something was very wrong. Her mind was already swimming, the den around her spinning as a flurry of footsteps came rushing into the medicine at den.
She curled into a ball, claws digging into her nest as she tried to breathe through the intensity of the pains that now rippled down her side "Ghostcrown" she replied, his form coming in and of focus as the tom came close "I think there is something wrong with the kits, you need to find Firetooth" Jetfire gritted her teeth, biting her tongue in the process "NOW!" she letting out hiss the clump of moss she had been digging her claws into being torn from the nest
Even as he trudged back into camp, freezing from toe to tail, Skipstep's final words to him echoed in the Medicine Cat's mind. Firetooth honestly could care less about the fatherly threat; he would never willingly do anything to hurt Jetfire anyway. But there was an obvious implication behind the other tom's message that made him uneasy. It was like Skipstep had temporarily mistook him for Jetfire's new mate or something, even though he was sure he'd specifically mentioned that he was a Medicine Cat. He wasn't sure why it bothered him so much; was he just insulted that someone would accuse him of breaking the Medicine Cat code? Or was it something else...? The tabby shook the thoughts out of his head, letting out a loud yawn. It had been a long night already, and he needed some rest before anything else. His older brother Ghostcrown was a father, maybe he'd ask him about it tomorrow.
He'd only taken a few steps into Swiftclan's makeshift camp when a sudden yowl of pain broke through the quiet of the winter night, immediately causing Firetooth to become fully alert. That was coming from his den. Without hesitation he sprinted ahead into the Medicine Cat Den, turning the corner only to find Jetfire laying in her nest, blood gushing from her side and bleeding through the cobweb bandages, with a frantic Ghostcrown at her side. "Fox-dung," he cursed under his breath. Her chest wound had reopened. He had hoped it was finally healing, but internal pressure from her current pregnancy must've caused it to burst open again. In a few steps he was right at her side. "Don't worry, I'm back," he meowed to them both, instinctively leaning down to touch his nose to Jetfire's forehead to comfort her. huh...why did he do that?
Firetooth moved to carefully remove the cobwebs along her side to assess the wound. "How long ago did this start? I-" Dear Starclan, this didn't look good. But he needed to keep her calm, he could handle this. Standing up, he bounded over to the herb storage, shifting through the piles until he found some foxglove leaves to stop the deep bleeding, as well as goldenrod juice to numb the pain of the wound. "I found your father at the gathering, along with Brilliantbeacon and Lionpride. They were all ecstatic to hear you're alright. They wanted me to tell you that they love you very much, and that Skipstep and Littlestar will come visit as soon as they can."
In the nursery, though all the kits left in her charge slept soundly, Indigopastels couldn't sleep. Looking down at the various sliver and orange kits in her nest, there was hardly any room for her. Outside the nursery she could hear Lionblood snoring softly, the golden warrior had appointed himself as a guard, used to all his kin sleeping within the den's walls every night except this one.
Cutting through the near silence she heard a cat cry out, already on edge the Lilac she-cat quickly got to her paws, careful not to disturb hers or Jetfire's kits before hurrying out of the nursery, only stopping to instruct her older kit to go sit with the other kits. Indigo nearly collided with Firetooth before coming to an abrupt halt at her sister's side, her blue eyes darting from cat to cat in an attempt to put the pieces together.
"What's happening?" she asked, finally settled on Firetooth, realizing the medicine-cat would be the best source of information. She did her best to keep the worry out of her tone, crouching down by her sister to nuzzle the distressed queen. "It's going to be alright Jetfire, we're here." she purred in reassurance.

Jetfire had no longer hissed at Ghostcrown, when Firetooth's voice reached her ears, she shifted uncomfortably trying to ease to ease the way her muscles were clamping down on themselves. She closed her eyes as she felt Firetooth's cool touch on her forehead before he began to unwind the cobwebs "It just started" She managed to pant out between clenched teeth claws flexing in and and instinctually as he worked. As soon as he had his paws on her sides, he would be able to feel the distinctive waves of contractions that had more than likely caused the wound to rip open as the muscles tightened and loosened.
"Firetooth... everything is spinning" she reached out, grasping Satinlight's paw to pull it closer as Firetooth worked on her wound. It was helping to anchor her when the rest of the world seemed to be slipping through her claws "is that supposed to happen?" she questioned as the medicine cat continued on about meeting with her family "You are mistaken, right sister?" she groaned having to pause until the wave passed "Our mother is dead, she died in the..." she was cut off with a scream as the first of the kits was born, a fluffy white and orange she-cat. The medicine cat wasn't done dealing with her wound, but the kits were not about to wait. The first kit was tiny, Jetfire having gone into labor pretty far ahead of her due date, but was fully formed and already showing signs of life
"Is.. is it ok?" she questioned, her eyes unable to focus "please tell me its ok"
Firetooth bit back another curse as he began to feel the Queens' contractions; this was just great - either the open wound had triggered an early labor, nearly a quarter moon ahead of schedule, or the other way around. But regardless, the Medicine Cat now had the double task of making sure Jetfire didn't bleed out, and making sure her newborns made it into the world safe and alive. Luckily it seemed to have just started, meaning that there was time to get this under control. Squeezing the goldenrod juice into the side wound to numb the pain before stuffing it with foxglove leaves and lady's mantle to stop the bleeding as much as physically possible, he glanced over to the other pair of felines sitting worriedly beside his patient. Any extra pairs of paws were better than none.
"These kits are coming tonight, whether we like it or not," he barked at them. "Indigopastels, give your sister narcissus flower petals and birthwort, and then a stick to bite down on. Then grab some fresh borage seeds for yourself - you'll have to nurse these kits when they come. Ghostcrown, get ready to lick these kits like your life depends on it!" Struggling to keep the bleeding at bay, Firetooth glanced over when the first kit was born, and rushed over to lick at it until the fluffy newborn let out a faint squeak. "It's...She's just fine," he sighed in relief, before passing the kit to his brother and grabbing more leaves. "You're doing great, Jetfire. Just hang in there, alright? And I swear to you, Littlestar is alive."
the queen was listening, her ears flicking in Firetooth's direction was the only indication. She could bear to tear her gaze away from her sister just yet. "You're doing beautifully Jetfire." she purred licking her sister between her ears. "I need to step away to get the herbs for you but I'll be back by your side in an instant." The former Janus rose to her paws, shaking. She didn't have time to dwell on the gravity of the situation as she dashed to fetch the strange looking plants the medicine-cat had told her to. Once she had returned to her sister's side she separated out the flower petals and birthwort and nosed them in front of Jetfire. "Here these will help." she said softly, taking a moment to stare down at the borage seeds, her fur fluffing up in anxiety. This is only temporary she told herself. She hoped... Suppressing the shudder that threatened to creep its way down her spine she lapped up the seeds before sliding the stick closer to her litter-mate.

"Hear that? Mom is alive" there was no hiding the glimmer of hope in her eyes as Firetooth spoke, that was dashed as another contraction took over taking her breath away. Then satinlights was gone to fetch the herbs, her paws shaking as her sister pulled away from her already feeling weaker than she had at the start. She tried to push the thoughts away, as she lapped at the herbs that were set in front of her nose and swallowed them "Firetooth... I need you to promise me something" she closed her her eyes trying to breath through the nest wave "Satinlights... Ghostcrown... You have to hold him to it" she stammered out before grabbing the stick and biting down, leaving deep indentions the woods and a small sliver of blood from where she had bit her tongue
Then the next kit arrived, looking even smaller the first without the extra fluff. It was a sleek orange tabby tom and it first it didn't move.
With his brothers arrival, the tom calmed. His movements became more certain as methodical as he fully awakened and settled into his role, nodding at the queen supportively, smiling along with the news, never far from her side even as more cats crowded the den. It occurred to him there might be too many paws here, but none of them were about to leave, so he settled in and was grateful to be given a job.
As Ghostcrown reached for the new tom, his coat started to prickle. He hastily brought the kit away from its mother and behind her back, where he looked helplessly at his brother and mouthed, “he’s not breathing.” He couldn’t upset Jetfire now, and he didn’t want to distract Firetooth either, but someone had to save this little life, if it wasn’t already too late.
"Then. Lick. Backwards. Until. It. Does." Was the hastily and silently-mouthed response to his mouse-brained brother. Ghostcrown had kits of his own, did he seriously not know how this worked? You had to groom a kit against their fur in order to encourage breathing. Firetooth was growing more stressed now, as the leaves absorbed more and more blood until they were unusable, and discarded into a growing pile beside the nest. Why wasn't it stopping? The Medicine Cat was taking deep breaths, trying to keep it together even as his paws were being covered by Jetfire's blood. He glanced over at the barely-conscious Queen, clearly concerned. "What is it, Jetfire?"

Jetfire was in to much pain at first to notice that the second kit hadn't started squealing immediately as the first. WIth her bleeding the kits were all being placed in a separate nest for now. Her claws has stopped digging into the nest, the pain dulling. It was a welcome relief for Jetfire, but it wasn't a good sign. She was loosing to much, as her thought became more scattered "Firetooth... promise me you will do everything you can to save these kits" it was a strange request, what medicine cat wouldn't do their best to save them? But it was what she said next that showed what she really meant
"Last time Bloodystar choose to save the kits over me..." she paused, squeezing her eyes through the next contraction and bite down on the stick "I disagree with a lot of things that he has done, but that was the one thing that I agreed with it" forced to stop and pant trying to catch her breath "If you have to choose between me and these kit, pick the kits" she could feel herself draining away and while she hoped she was going to make it through this, with each kit that was born it was seeming more and more unlikely. Then a third kit was born, just as the one Ghostcrown had been working on began to move and cry. This one was a fluffy orange tabby as well, quickly beginning to squirm and move as it was licked "and Satinlights?"
"If I don't make it, please let them meet our mother and father, I want them to...." her words were caught off as the fourth kit was born. A thin gray tabby that was clearly not ready to be born yet. It was far smaller than it's siblings, not fully developed. It laid still and unmoving, even after being cleaned off. This time Jetfire stopped talking, to nauseous as she fell back into her nest with eyes closed the weaker she got "meet their grandparents..." her last words merely a whisper
Time around them seemed to have temporarily froze, if not stop altogether, as the words left Jetfire's mouth, piece by piece as the kits were being born. Firetooth found himself unable to do anything except stare blankly back at the Queen, his yellow-green eyes wide in shock. "If you have to choose between me and these kits, pick the kits." It was a choice Firetooth never wanted to make. It was the one choice he absolutely couldn't make. Why...? Why was she doing this? Why was she making him choose? No, he knew exactly why, but for some reason he found himself completely unable to accept the truth that she was dy-no, No, NO. "Jetfire..." he shook his head softly. "Don't you...don't you talk like that. You're going to be fine, got it?" His voice was even, but no one could miss the pure desperation behind his words. If anyone else was talking, he missed it behind the loud sound of his heart pounding in his chest and the static in his ears.
He turned to look at his brother, their roles reversed for the first time; Firetooth looking completely lost and searching for Ghostcrown's guidance and support. For his brother to agree with him, that Jetfire would be alright. Instead, what he found was Ghostcrown standing in front of the stillborn kit, glancing down at it for a moment before shaking his head sadly. The Medicine Cat cringed and looked away, turning instead to Indigopastels, growing more and more desperate by the second. "Indigo, Satin, whatever your name is, give her some Skullcap Seeds. They're smooth and grainy, look like tiny rocks. GET THEM. NOW." A last-ditch effort strength booster, only to be used in the most dire of situations. "Hang in there, Jetfire. Don't you dare give up on me now. You can get through this, I know you can. You...you have to."
If Firetooth wasn’t so busy, Ghostcrown might have glared at him for his lack of assistance, but as it was all he could do was continue licking the kitten until his little body was cleaned up, and just when he was on the verge of giving up, the feeble body twitched and began to live. He sank back on his haunches, exhausted already, but he had only a second of rest before the next kit came.
Ghostcrown glanced over at the dying queen, his eyes dark and sorrowful. He felt bitter. He had risked so much to save her, had fought at her side for moons now, and now Bloodystar might win again after all. He hated it with every fiber of his being. How could she die now, after everything? But she was falling unconscious, she was on the edge, and there were still kits left to come.
After everything, Ghostcrown was still a father. Having kits changed his entire world. Everything was for them at first, and even now he felt the same fierce protectiveness. His son was scattered, his family was breaking, but he couldn’t stand to think of them dying, certainly not for him. His daughter’s death was the heaviest loss he had ever experienced and he would do anything to right that failure, without a doubt, even his strongest moral guidelines were nothing but sand if he had the choice to save her. Jetfire, she hadn’t even met these little ones yet, but she must feel the same already, and she had a chance. He couldn’t begrudge her final wish; he would have done the same. Firetooth might be able to save all of them, but with his attention divided. they would all suffer. She needed him to save the kids first.
He had failed his daughter, but her family still has a chance. It tore him apart, but instead of going to her side, he remained with her kitten and slowly gave up the fight for its life. He met Firetooth’s gaze.
“She’s already lost one kit, Firetooth,” he murmured, the words sticking his throat, but he directed them out all the same. “You can’t let her lose any more.”
The medicine cat didn’t seem to listen.
Ghostcrown lunged across the den and braced his forehead against Firetooth’s. “Focus on the kits, they need you,” he snarled. He tore away and shoved the ginge tomcat toward Jetfire’s flanks. The queen needed his help, especially if there were kittens left to come, but first Firetooth needed to snap out of it. He braced himself in front of Jetfire, blocking her face from the medicine cat’s sight, intent on his goal now. “Save them. You’re the only one that can. Save them now and then you can help Jetfire, okay? But the kits come first. What do we need to do?”
"You'll introduce them to our parents yourself!" Satin hissed, she hadn't been called Satinlights in a long time. As far as she and anyone was concerned Satinlights was dead, but not to her sister. Her blue eyes searched Jetfire's expression for any light, to let her know that the tabby could still hear her. One heartbeat passed then two before Satinlights scrambled away, frantically searching the storage for the skullcap seeds, she wasted no time once she was sure she had the right seeds, gently opening her sisters mouth and poking the seeds gently inside, then rubbing Jetfire's throat in an attempt to get her to swallow them.
"You're going to make it Jetfire, do you hear me? I know you're tired but you're a fighter, just the fact that you've survived so much... that you're hear right proves that. So don't give up on me now. Don't you dare give up on these kits. We all need you to be strong right now, okay? L-look you can't go yet Jetfire because if you do.. You'll go to the isle and I can't follow you there... So you need to stay here with me, and you're kits... with us." The she-cats pep talk broke off into a plea as she took a step back then another, her whole body trembling as she took in the bloody state of the den for the first time.
"it'll work right?" she rounded on Firetooth her eyes clouded with unshed tears. "The seeds will work right? They have to!" She knew it wasn't fair to yell at the medicine cat, he was doing his best and she knew that, but Jetfire's kitting reminded her so much of Aconite's that Satinlights could hardly stand to be there and was just about as useful now as she was then.
"Jetfire needs me!" Firetooth snarled back at his brother, immediately shoving Ghostcrown back so hard that the other tom stumbled and nearly tripped over a pile of blood-soaked debris. He growled furiously at his brother, fur standing on end, and for the briefest of moments was about to raise a claw against him...only to stop cold when he looked back down at Jetfire. Whatever anger had been boiling beneath the surface was immediately washed away, instead replaced by pure terror as he watched her stuttered breathing, the Queen barely clinging to her life. For the first time in his life, he was at a complete loss as for what to do. The den seemed to be swimming around him. Wait. No. The den wasn't swimming.
He was crying. Why was he crying?
His whole body seemed to be shaking, his breathing heavy and erratic. He didn't reply to Indigopastel's question. He didn't have to. The devastated look on his face when his eyes met hers said it all. Instead, he turned his attention back to Jetfire's flanks, his expression completely blank with the exception of the tears streaming down his face. He had no choice. His brother was right. He was the only who could do it. This was her final wish, and Starclan have mercy, he was going to honor it. As much as part of himself died along with her.
And now he finally knew why.
Like the breaking of a dam, it all came out. Without warning, Firetooth suddenly threw himself on top of Jetfire's body with an absolutely heartbroken yowl as he began sobbing into her blood-soaked fur. "I-I can't do this, Ghostcrown! I can't lose her like this! I CAN'T! PLEASE, JETFIRE! STAY WITH US! WITH YOUR KITS! WITH ME! PLEASE!"

Jetfire waivered between consciousness and darkness, catching flashes of conversation though they were scattered and fragmented. Catching some words and not others as her strength began to fail. She would open her eyes, and then they would close again as she kept fighting, clinging to life by the mere tips of her claws as she tried to make it through. The seeds being shoved down her throat, Ghostcrown's voice saying to save the kits, her sister telling her that her kits needed her, and then... a warmth enveloped her body that had started to go cold as Firetooth clung to her crying into her pelt.
I-I can't do this, Ghostcrown! I can't lose her like this! I CAN'T! PLEASE, JETFIRE! STAY WITH US! WITH YOUR KITS! WITH ME! PLEASE!
The words rang clear in her mind, her eyes slowly opening the seeds giving her strength as her own was exhausted. Her paw slowly reach up to touch his face as she tried to smile "not yet" before they fell closed once more, her paw falling back into the nest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Outside of the den there was a commotion, cats yelling for someone to stop, and disgruntled protests. Suddenly a group of cats stood in the entrance of the medicine cat den, blocking out the light of the morning sun which had begun to climb into the sky. The first one to enter was Littlestar. She herself was not in great physical condition, especially after traveling so far after being confined to DayClan's camp for so long. She looked worn and tired, but as the scent of blood hit her nose it all faded into sheer determination. A moment later she was by her daughter's side ignoring all the gasps and looks, there would be time to deal with it later half thinking that she was merely imagining Satinlights standing there as she had done a lot quiet recently as he guilty consciousness ate way at her
"Firetooth you haven't lost her yet" her paws went to Jetfire's belly, feeling for the kits and trying to take in the she-cats condition through all the blood "but if you don't snap out of it and focus, you will" in that moment the rest of the scene surrounding them seemed to fade away to nothingness her only focus was not loosing the patient in front of her, she refused to loose another daughter
"Vixenkismet, she bleeding inside out and it needs to be stopped quickly" knowing that her adoptive mother would know more than she on how to handle it as she went straight to work "Firetooth, did you hear me?" she snapped
[Im going to let everyone react, but then we will be time skipping forward to later on after the worst is over and they are waiting for her to wake up]
Skipstep was a step behind his mate carrying several items so she and Vixenkismet were able to move faster. His mate wanted to make sure they had everything and Vixenkismet wanted to make sure if Littlestar needed something they could have extra healing supplies on hand.
He set down the bundle and winced at the sight of Jetfire, flashbacks to Littlestar's first difficult pregnancy many many seasons ago. His throat tightened. "Firetooth we have some extra supplies along with some items to help her after the birth." He meowed softly. "I'll take the items for after the birth out and set them aside." He said, beginning to do just that. The blood was taking him back to that day and now that it was his daughter he was starting to worry. So he put a task in front of himself and tried to make himself useful.
IT wasn't something that was necessarily needed, but he was no healer. The best thing he could do was stand off to the side and grab things his mate or one of the actual healers might need.
"M-mom?" Satinlight's voice trembled as her mother entered then den. She looked nothing like the strong cat Satinlights had left by the river that day. She looked tired, and hard clearly been through a great ordeal, but there was no mistaking that it was Littlestar who had just took control of the situation. Despite the gravity of everything going on around them, and her sister's life hanging in the balance she couldn't help herself. The Lilac point moved forward until she was touching Littlestar, burring her face into her mother's fur for the first time she she was a kit.
"She's going to be okay right?" she whimpered, hiding her tears in the leader's long fur.
Firetooth's eyes grew wide as just for a single moment he felt the warmth of Jetfire's paw against his cheek before she finally fell unconscious, the tom completely frozen in place in his grief-induced disassociation, until an unexpected voice pulled him back. His head snapped to the side to face a cat whom he had only met face-to-face once, but certainly remembered. Littlestar. The former High Priestess of Sunclan, and Jetfire's mother. He took a cautious step back as she pushed forward to check on her daughter's condition, her words echoing in his mind: 'You haven't lost her yet.'
He could still feel where her paw had rested on his face. She was right. He hadn't lost her yet. And he wasn't going to. Not now, and not ever.
"Firetooth, did you hear me?"
The Medicine Cat of Swiftclan snapped back to attention, his still tear-filled eyes now glimmering with newfound determination. "Yes ma'am," he meowed with a curt nod, pushing the blood-soaked leaves and debris to the side to give them all more room to work. "Tell me what to do and I'll do it." Wiping his eyes, he glanced back at Skipstep, Indigopastels, and Ghostcrown before giving the she-cat a confident smile. This was his job. And he wasn't going to give up yet, not if Jetfire wasn't.
