The cool night air brushed at her fur invitingly, reminding her how much she loved NightClan. Truly, she had wandered far and between before deciding to truly settle among a Clan. And she couldn't have chosen any better, either. Her soul longed for, loved even, to prowl the night and watch the strange little creatures that dare not wander out during the day. Just then, as if on cue, she heard the slight tremble of squeaks. The brushing her small paws and soft fur against the earth. Her heart quickened, her eyes dilating with excitement as she crouched low to the ground, careful not to disturb the peace of the night. She crept forward.
A small, green frond tickled the tip of her nose as she crept forward, causing her nose to suddenly prickle. She tried to bite it back, but it seemed today was not in her favor. A sneeze escaped her despite her best efforts to repress it, and in turn, she sat up with disappointment as the small patters of paws receded. She watched the small, dusty colored mouse dart into the undergrowth within a second. And then, it was gone. A fleeting moment, squandered by such a stupid accident. "I think my body is working against me," she muttered to herself, standing with a sigh.

"That happens sometimes," a soft voice replied from behind the disgruntled she cat. A gray and black tom stood there barely visible, dappled in the moon light. If it wasn't for that little bit of light, he wouldn't be discernible except for his scent. Two bats lay at his front feet, their blood and their stillness bespeaking the evidence they were quite dead. "Were you stalking mice?" he asked sniffing the cold night air.

She started slightly as the voice of another brushed her ears, making her turn deftly to consider the tom before her. She regarded the bats with an impressed expression, her eyes twinkling with a sort of curiosity. "Yes. I'm not especially adept at night hunting -- yet -- so creatures like bats are out of my range," she replied with a small playful smile. The charcoal she-cat regarded him after another moment, moving around now so that she wasn't peering at him with her head swiveled around. "I'll learn eventually though, be it through hard work or luck. Or a little of both, most likely."

"You're right about that," he replied nodding his head in agreement. "You can work hard at learning techniques but when you go to use them, sometimes things don't always go your way. A change of an air current or a crunching of a leaf can mean whether or not you catch your prey." An owl hooted softly somewhere off to his right. He turned his head in that direction then looked back at the she cat. "Even owls can have off nights, too. I've seen you around camp but never caught your name. I'm Smokeshadow." He dipped his head slightly in greeting.

"Jesterlullaby, here to make your acquaintance," she said, giving a small bow that could otherwise be seen as playful and yet elegantly polite. She stood straighter now, feeling more confident now that she knew a name, and even more so, that she had met someone at least formally within the Clan. Mostly she had kept busy, so she hadn't the time to actually converse with someone. "Perhaps I spooked the Owl's prey. The world is funny like that, you know. Everything has a reaction, an effect to what you do. You step on a plant, and it might cease to grow, even if said plant is a blade of grass. It's amazing, isn't it?"
Truly, her eyes danced as she got carried away in her curiosity, her fur prickling up every so slightly as she smiled. Sometimes, or all of the time, really, she forgot that she wasn't alone with her thoughts. And maybe she sounded a little bit odd, but she didn't particularly mind.

He thought a bit before answering. "I suppose you're right but I never really thought about it like that before," Smokeshadow admitted. "Our actions can affect others. Your actions tonight saved a mouse's life but made an owl lose his meal." His thoughts kept on rolling. "And now that mouse may be a pregnant queen and give birth to ten mousekits. If that's true, there'll be more prey for us to catch later." He surprised himself. Usually he isn't very loquacious, especially with someone he's just met. But there was something about Jesterlullaby that made him feel comfortable.

She hadn't even considered that. Her fur began to poof up rather slightly, her mouth opening just a tad in surprise. "By the stars, you're right. I mean I was only speaking in thought of cause and effect, but when you put it like that," she trailed off, her brain seeming to short circuit from the overexertion of considering these things. Jesterlullaby couldn't help but nod in agreement all of a sudden. And she said, as if she had fully intended to let her prey slip away, "Alright, mouse. You live today to feed another mouth in the future."
Then, the dark and auburn mixed feline cast him a sheepish smile, remembering to restrain herself, if only a bit. "Anyways. I'm sure that I'll catch something else tonight, or later. You can't keep being unlucky forever; at some point, it has to break."

"I have a feeling you're right. I'm sure you'll catch something before the night's through. Come on then," Smokeshadow said as he scraped some earth over his two bats. "I'll help you. I'll collect these when we go back to camp." He had been hunting alone for the past several days. It would be nice to hunt with a partner again. "You lead the way. Where would you like to hunt?"

She hummed to herself for a moment, wondering where it was she would like to go. She'd not been in the Clan for too long, so her knowledge on the territory was limited at best. "Mmm. Do you have any suggestions? Not that I'm covering up for not knowing any of the names for the territory -- but I'm very curious about places I haven't been, too. Something exciting and new is always fun, right?"

"Well," Smokeshadow mewed thoughtfully. "I just came from the old bear cave. It's not far from here. That's where I caught these two bats. Have you been there yet?" He wouldn't mind going back. It was one of his favorite places to hunt. Not only did it have plenty of prey, it was also a good place to get out of any bad weather. But fortunately tonight the weather was good, especially so actually for Leafbare.

"I would love to! Lead the way," Jesterlullaby's voice lilted as her body pricked with excitement at the mention of a bear cave, her nose twitching with a fervor of excitement. Possibly, she shouldn't be so excited about a bear cave; but then again, she was driven by the constant dance of danger for the price of stories. She could hardly contain herself as the sudden rush of such a tale came to mind, a memory. "I knew a cat once, who told me about a bear. I don't know if it was true or not; they didn't seem like the trustworthy sort. But they once claimed to have snuck into a bear's occupied den, and had taken one of its food."
She wrinkled her nose at that, making a small sound close to disgust. "I don't know what convinced him to steal a bears meal, though. It doesn't sound appetizing, whatever that would be. What would a bear eat?" she trailed off, musing to herself and entirely forgetting about the previous story. Now her brain was focused on the curiosity of a bear's meal would be.

"Well there's no danger of finding a bear in this one," Smokeshadow meowed. "No living NightClan cat can remember seeing a bear there in their lifetime. As to what they eat, I wouldn't have the faintest idea." He paused for a moment then continued. "Well actually, that's not true. When I was a kit in the nursery, a queen told a story of the bear that used to live there. She claimed that the bear would lurk outside our camp and listen for naughty kits. And when he found one, he would rush in and snatch it away. He would only take the bad kits but never the good ones." He laughed at the memory. "I don't know if bears really do eat cats or if that was just a story to make kits behave. But sometimes there's a bit of truth in those nursery tales."

Her pelt seemed to frill up only slightly, though it wasn't due to any lasting fear. Instead, she had the eyes of someone very interested, her whiskers twitching. "Kits have stories?" she asked, as if it were the most exciting and yet confusing knowledge she'd ever received. With a sudden shake of her head as she began to walk, amending her odd question with, "Apologies. It's just that, I didn't grow as a kit. I hardly know any of the nursery tales -- and I'm rather fond of stories. Where I grew up... well, they weren't thought of very fondly."
Her voice faltered only slightly, her ears flicking back as she recalled her previous home. Better to let old ghosts die than stir them up, and yet, with something so impactful on your youth, you couldn't simply forget.

"No stories?" Smokeshadow asked, truly intrigued. "I'd think life would be rather dull without stories being told. Can I ask why your family didn't like stories?" He wondered about her family's reason not to tell stories. Although generally quiet by nature, he did like to listen. He recalled lots of hours spent in the elders den reliving their many adventures (and some misadventures). It was one of his favorite past-times as a kit. And I still like to listen to stories today, he thought. "Stories add information as well as fun and entertainment to life."

She gave a small, musical laugh as she recalled her birthplace. And yet, her eyes swam with pained, and homesick feelings of loss. She supposed it wouldn't hurt to explain about her home, and so she said wistfully, "I grew up in a... strict environment. My parents were very strict, and I was most of the time conformed to learning things that were boring. Stories to us were merely instructional things, meant to teach, and not to entrance. Me and my brother both loved to whisper tales to each other, despite all. He got in big trouble one day because of this, and I felt wretched," she explained, her ears flicking slightly, before she cut herself off and shook her head.
"Anyways. The point is that they didn't believe in living with your head stuck in tales, and myths; stories. They believed strength came from studious and rigorous training. So, in short, they believed stories encouraged the youth to lie. And they also believed that it encouraged us to dream," she finished dryly, her ears flicking once. But then, she slipped back to her bright, whimsical demeanor as she said, "No good that ever did them, though. In the end, a cat is free to choose the path they want to choose. That's the beauty of life."

Smokeshadow continued to walk as they neared the old bear cave. He listened intently to what Jesterlullaby was telling him. It was a story in itself. He understood the part about keeping young cats from lying, no one likes a liar. But what disturbed him most was keeping cats from dreaming.
"Strength does come from training hard and learning the ways of a warrior but dreaming about the future is just as vitally important," he said. "Without dreams and aspirations one's spirit would shrivel up and die. You would just be a cat going through the motions. I'm glad you got yourself out of that environment. Well, there's the cave." He stopped walking and tipped his head toward a dark opening. He could smell his old scent from a little bit ago starting to fade. But fortunately for them it was being overlaid with fresher prey smells.

She could only manage a small, tired smile before they reached the cavern. Indeed, she hadn't wandered here yet. Her eyes stretched wide with wonder, tasting the air and letting all of the old and new scents wash over her. She still was fixated on the idea of possibly seeing a bear, but she tried her best to squash it. "So, what's your trick for bat hunting? If we come across one?" Jesterlullaby tilted her head at the tom, green eyes swimming with curiosity.
Post by Whitemuzzle on Feb 21, 2021 13:54:55 GMT -5
"Well actually the trick for catching bats is to get them before they wake up," Smokeshadow said a bit sheepishly. "I got those two right before sundown. Bats are nocturnal just like us. During the day they come in here to sleep. They hang upside down from the roof of the cave while some cling the the walls. Those are the easier ones to catch. You just have to be real quiet like mouse stalking. However, we won't find any in here now. They're all out feasting on bugs. Although we can find mice and moles in here now." There was another way to hunt bats but he didn't go into that. Some cats catch bats at sunup when they return to the cave but that time was hours away.
