Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. "I need someone to go on a hunt with me," Innocentia said, those words alone made most cats avert their eyes from her direction.
She never could hunt anything normal. Perhaps a kittypet Siamese or a rogue who had just caught her an extra helping. Maybe some seafood by the Survival Clans. So many options that so many cats never considered. She let out a purr, "C'mon now, let's not be afraid to try new foods. Who's interested?"
Cardinal was examining his white paws from where he sprawled at the edge of the ruins. He glanced up slightly at her question and his brow arched slightly in amusement as no other cat volunteered. "I'll come along," the dark russet tom replied offhandedly, replacing his paw on the ground and rising to his feet. "I could use some fun."
Innocentia's lips pulled back in a delighted childish smile, "Yay! Okay okay, let's go toooooo theeeeee border!" She squealed with excitement as she pranced forward.
Each paw step was a little skip in her step as she moved through the dark woodlands. Her tiny paws instinctively moved atop each root and dodged every dark puddle like she knew every small piece of the land like the back of her paw, "My names Innocentia, what's yours?"
Long hunting hours meant she didn't stay in the league and learn many cats names, not anymore at least.
He knew better than to trust her childish energy, though he went along with it, smiling politely. She may act like an eager kit, but he had learned along the rest of the League that she wasn't as innocent as her name and appearance claimed. Despite that, he was unconcerned; he figured he was safe. "Cardinal," he answered, following her a few pawsteps behind her with his tail swishing freely.
"Have you ever eaten a cardinal, Cardinal?" Innocentia asked approaching a briar and easily scrambling through it, her head popping out on the other end, but luckily her tail swished to a clearer path just a bit around it. The fact that her bow had little to no nicks in it was utterly astounding.
"I have; my brother thought it was important. It was more flavorful than thrush, certainly, but the feathers got in the way and it wasn't really worth it." Cardinal considered the bush, then averted his course, circling around the edge to meet up with her on the other side.
"I suppose some would think it would be odd if you liked the taste of cardinal. What would people say if they heard you talking about eating a cardinal, that you would eat your own flesh?" She smiled in amusement, "I'm familiar with those rumors though and even if you did like cardinal, you'd get past the gossip. I used to be very emotional, so much so I needed to take special herbs just so I didn't harm myself. I used to be one of the crazies," Innocentia said as if she still wasn't one of the crazies.
His dark brow arched as the russet tom sent her a considering glance. "I can't say it would have bothered me much, in all honest. Would they not be intimidated by the idea of a cat that would enjoy the taste of his own flesh? Cats fear the unknown; they wouldn't want to intervene with a cat like that. Give you some freedom to roam, it does."
"Oh I suppose," Innocentia said puffing out her cheeks.
Her eyes lit up, "Hey, we're here!" She lifted her head up in the air and swung it down almost immediately, her knife point smile sliding back like it was the type of thing to latch into place, "And I smell something juicy"
She stalked forward, cats scent trails were different for her. There was distinction. Cats would often smell SunClan, BrookClan, but that's it. Just the clan, nothing more. She saw each one as a specific trail, she had to. A cat couldn't just smell rabbit and have all the rabbits blur into one. She had to identify who was the weakest and plumpest then separate all the other cats scents around it and directly target on one.
In this case Thomas was sitting down, his white paw lazily scratch at his ear as he watched a ladybug slowly rise to the top of the branch. Amazing. It was winter and here it was, surely it would die. Surely this majestic creature deserved better. He bit the twig and the ladybug swallowing both. His belly giving a clear audible sound that neither of those agreed with his stomach.
"A rabbit or a squirrel?" he mused quietly, with a roll of his eyes. He knew the odds she'd found real prey were almost nonexistent. Cardinal followed anyway, morbidly curious, and looking froward to meeting their victim before it was too late. His steps were soft, but he left the tracking to her, watching her work.
Innocentia actually nudged Cardinal, "Come on, let's chase him, I love a meal that has adrenaline pumping through their veins," She grinned.
In that moment she didn't wait for Cardinal, she stalked a bit forward, but whispered back to Cardinal, "You have longer legs than me so you can bolt at him, I always have to be a little more careful," She assured him so he wouldn't think he was supposed to stalk the cat too. Her tail swished slowly, just above the powdered dirt where vague traces of snow managed to frost the ground. Because of the thick forest few things like rain and snow ever made too big of an impact, but there was snow on the branches and icicles about, they always had to be careful about those in whatever way a cat can be careful about that sort of thing.
Should he be helping her hunt down a cat? The morality of the situation was pretty clear that he should not be murdering a cat so it could be eaten, but when had they ever been a moral population? His tail swished as he regarded the foreign tom; then he shugged. Why not? Cardinal let her slink away from him for a few steps, then shook out his fur and stood taller. His teeth bared in a snarling grin, he winked once at Thomas, then charged.
Thomas let out a delighted mrrow. A wink! He felt so special. He should return it too, he winked or thought he winked. He really closed both of his eyes and was tackled down by a tiny cat. Thomas stared up at the tiny cat and then to the tom that winked at him. They shared a wink together, something sacred not even this stranger could deny! Surely the winker would free him because they shared such a precious moment together.
Hmm. It wasn't quite a chase, but he thought this worked out rather well regardless. "Hey there, friend," the tom purred as he strode closer, dark eyes glimmering with amusement. "Good catch, Innocentia." He didn't intervene, of course, but did stay nearby to watch. How mousebrained was this feller not to run away when he saw the two predators coming his way? Then again... one of them was a fluffy white she-cat with a bow.
Betrayal descended through Thomas's body. He could feel his veins turn ice cold sticking to his flesh like a tongue licking cold steel. He had been betrayed he would never. Not even if he saw a cool pig start flying. Forget this meaingful. Wait what was he thinking about? Oh right! Flying pigs, those would be cool.
"You know, there's certain junk food you just shouldn't eat and he's definitely one of them," Innocentia said, "I'm not one for being picky, but I ain't risking eating diseased meat since his brain is clearly gone."
Innocentia stepped off of him, "Go away."
Thomas stared up at Innocentia and then rolled over getting to his paws before looking right at Cardinal.
Cardinal snorted in amusement at her comment. This one seemed fine, just a bit daft, but he wasn't about to encourage her to eat someone. He expected the tom to run, though, not just stand and look at him.
The hunter arched a brow, then swept his plumed tail to the side. "Well... off you go then," he told the tom. "Have a nice day. Best you don't tell you friends about this, hmm?"
Thomas stared at Cardinal for a moment longer than anyone was comfortable with. He padded forward with uncertainty, like a fawn taking his first steps. Then in one swift movement he swatted Innocentia across the nose, claws sheathed and darted away at the speed he should have run at in the beginning.
"Okay well now I'm going to tear his nose off," Innocentia said darting after Thomas despite speed definitely not being her thing, "Catch up with him and pin him down!"
What was he going to do? The tom didn't mused, staring at him curiously as he stepped closer, closer... and struck the former proxy. Cardinal couldn't help a grin and a laugh as he watched the tomcat bolt. "Oh come on, appreciate his bravery," the hunter laughed, but loped after them as well - showing considerably less interest in catching Thomas this time.
Thomas spun on his paws last second and leapt into Innocentia, jumped off of her and continued on with a dash. This time Innocentia grabbed onto Thomas's tail and had to watch as for a moment he kept attempting to run not noticing anything was wrong. Innocentia unsheathed her claws staring at his kittypet collar for a moment and slashed at his tail. Thomas instantly winced and instead of fighting kept trying to pull at his poor tail, but Innocentia scratched his tail four more times before telling him, sternly and almost in a whisper to never come back before lifting off all of her weight she had used to keep his tail down. This time Thomas did run off without incident, his tail too injured to even tuck between his legs. She looked back at Cardinal, "He did seem brave, that's why I had to make sure to break it. Who knows what kind of person he'll come across if he started feeling brave again."
HHe slowed to a trot as the fool let himself get caught. He averted his gaze, expecting her to strike him down right there - but to his surprise, she let him go. Cardinal cocked his head as he watched the young tom run off mostly unharmed. "I thought you were going to eat him," he admitted to her. "But I suppose a lesson works just as well. Let him live another day to become another meal." He watched Thomas go, then grinned. "And he didn't even say goodbye!"
