Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. The marbled tan and gray feline flicked an ear at the small thump of noise just outside his reach. His whiskers trembled as he crept forward, pale eyes surveying the thing that had fallen from above them. A small, shimmery looking beetle. It was wriggling its little legs as it struggled to right itself, having fallen on its back. They felt a sort of pity for the thing, being caught so unaware and vulnerable. Glancing about, Exolas made a noncommittal sound at the back of his throat before nudging the little creature forward so that it was free to crawl away. He watched it scuttle hurriedly, as if it had plans of its own. An amused noise came from them, before they relaxed back into the comfortable position he had been in before.
In its scurry the beetle passed by the figure of another cat a little ways away, who made a small concerted effort to move out of the beetle's path as it moved onwards to whatever destination the little creature had in mind. Whether the other feline had avoided the creature out of concern or distaste was hard to tell.
As he passed by Exolas, the tom took a small note of the fact the other cat's gaze had strayed after the beetle, and hesitated a bit. "Good afternoon!" He greeted warmly. "Sure have been a lot more of those around, haven't there? Thanks to the weather getting warmer, I imagine."

Exolas let his ears prick forward with interest as the voice of another greeted him, making the feline stand with a shuddering stretch. They examined the other with a curious sort of gleam to their stormy colored eyes, before giving a polite dip of his head. "Hello," he said friendly, though his tone probably betrayed his more outwardly awkward social speech. "I suppose so, though I'm only every so often able to stretch my legs in the sunlight."
He gave a wistful little mumble, his pelt prickling slightly at the thought of running under the leaves again. It'd been a few moons, at least. He'd been mostly busying himself, keeping his mind on more substantial things like work and of the sort. Sighing to himself, the marbled tom offered a kind smile and said rather sheepishly, "I find bugs to be interesting, honestly. They have their own little world, entirely separated from our own. It's interesting."
The tom blinked, clearly a bit dumbfounded by Exolas' interest, but clearly still attempting to be friendly in return in spite of it. "I mean, they are." Randall agreed, pausing to think of exactly what to say. "To be honest, I haven't really thought about bugs in forever. I use to poke at them a lot as a tyke -- actually thinking back I was a lot meaner to them than I should have been. But they're interesting. Definently do their own little things." He said, the tom trying his hardest to relate to his fellow group-mate.

He seemed to sense the formality, because he tried for a somewhat sheepish, amused expression. They stood up with a small shake of their fur, eyes swimming with mirth. "Only intrieged really at the fact that every creature has it's own organization and life, that's all," he responded, stretching each limb out until the trembled. When they stood, he fixed them with a curious stare and added, "Sorry, I didn't catch your name, by the way."
Randall gave a nod. "It is interesting. Again not something I've really thought about a ton, but it's interesting. I'll admit the only ones I've really ever wondered about was ants, they do some pretty interesting things with their formations." He paused at bit at the reminder that they hadn't ever shared names. To some extent the tom was a bit too use to just assuming everyone knew everyone else name, or they'd hear it brought up eventually later on. "Oh! It's fine, my name's Randall, Randall Prospero. What's yours?"

Exolas made a small show of bowing slightly in a very polite fashion. Something he knew wasn't entirely accustomed to Regime cats, but something that he still heavily carried from his own past and youth. As if, like clockwork, it was woven into his very being. With a kind smile, he hummed lightly in his throat and said, "It's nice to meet you, Randall. I'm Exolas Viredum -- though, you can call me whatever you fancy," he greeted, his smile turning a fraction more friendly. Even playful, in its own way.
"Could I ask what you were doing, if that's not too nosy of me to do? You caught me staring after a beetle because I was bored," he amended, a slight chuckle escaping him.
"Nice to meet you too! Also nah, it's fine, but sorry to say it's nothing too interesting. I was actually kind of inbetween hunting. Just was passing through the main post because I got done visiting my sister, she's caught green cough. Luckily not too bad but uh, bad enough me and my siblings are trying to frequently check in to keep an eye on her. Then I just happened to notice you watching the beetle and thought I'd have a friendly conversation before it was back to the daily grind again." Randall explained with equal amusement, though there was a hint of exhuastion in his voice that made it all too clear that the tom, like most of the Regime in this harsh winter season, had been worked to the bone.

He felt a small inkling of pity for the tom, though mostly it was more empathy than anything. He'd been bored, but he'd also been too tired to truly want to do anything. "The Regime does keep you busy, doesn't it," he laughed, his whiskers twitching with a bit of a sarcastic bite to his tone. Then, they flicked their tail and cast his new acquaintance a kinder expression and offered, "If you'd like, I can help you with that. I've finished my duties for today."
"I'd be greatful for it actually. If I'm being honest, I'm not the best at hunting. I've been trained to fight and that's what I'm best at, I mean I can hunt but uh, never hurts to have help." Randall admitted. The tom was a mercenary first and foremost, hunting had never been where his talents lied. Of course, that fact didn't matter when the prey was as scarce as it had been this winter. Everyone was out hunting if they were able to.

They nodded towards the other tom, slowly rising to his paws and strolling in the direction Randall had been traveling previously, inviting him to lead the way in that unspoken movement. "I can lament with that, being a Mercenary myself. Not that I wasn't ever bad at hunting; I just preferred strategy and -- admittedly -- feeling triumphant in sending an enemy running," he said fondly, though his voice held no sound of braggery in it. "With prey, they're just... unpredictable."
Randall took the cue, starting on the way he'd been passing through before he had stopped to talk with the fellow mercenary, assuming Exolas would stay close by. "Same. Battles are a lot more satsifying than catching prey. I'd rather face a fox than spend and entire day chasing mice if I'm being honest." He said, having to hold back a sigh as he remember that was exactly how he was probably going to have to spend the rest of his day. Instead, in some attempt to numb the pain, he just continued on with his line of thought.
"It's boring, and feels more like luck than skill. I mean, I know there's skill to it, and if you learn and study it I'm sure there's a science to it, but it's nothing like actually going up against someone you can outmanuever, out smart, and just in general outfight. You just don't get those kinds of experiences out of catching prey."

"And yet," he sighed with a reproachful look as he gazed at the cavern ceiling above them, "It's sometimes hard to encounter things that aren't horribly large down here. It's probably foolish to wish for a fight, I guess. But it's the one thing I am good at." They shook their head with a small chuckle, tail flicking a few times in amusement. "My parents would probably give me an earful about how careless I've become, that's for sure."
"I mean, you're right. But again, it's nice to do something that makes you actually feel like you're being useful that isn't painfully repetative." Randall said, though his ears perked for a second when Exolas mentioned the earful he'd have gotten, and gave a slightly amused chuckle at that.
"I know I drive my older brothers crazy. Especially my eldest. He likes to say I'm "impulsive" and "unorderly" but I prefer the terms "driven" and "adaptive"." He said with a laugh. "But to be fair, I think you kind of have a bit of all those things to be willing to throw yourself into a fight you might not walk away from; cat, predator, or otherwise."

"That's one way to view it," Exolas snorted with an amused sort of smirk. "I like it. I suppose in a way, being able to adapt to any situation is a helpful skill indeed. Means that you can survive no matter what." A small, fraction of him wondered if his parents would have laughed at him, or reacted as cruelly. With a distinctly curious expression, he suddenly asked, "Are you close with them? Your family, I mean."
"I like to think we're pretty close." Randall said, the hint of humor in his voice making it clear that "pretty close" might have been a hint of an understatement. "I was pretty much raised by my two older brothers and basically helped to raised my younger brothers and sisters so I like to think we're all fairly attached as far as families go. I mean, we have our moments, we clash sometimes but you know, no more I think than most families do. We probably make more of an effort to keep in touch than a lot of cats actually. My older brothers make sure we have family meals and talks which is impressive considering we're all over the map sometimes, especially during times like these when there's hardly a break."
Randall then paused for a moment, the same curiosity that Exolas had had towards him now turned right around. "So, what about you? Are you close with your family or is it uh... More complicated?" The tom asked, trying to be polite in case the other mercenary wasn't quite as lucky in his family situation. Randall was all too aware that most cats didn't have the close family support network he did, whether they'd never had family in their lives or were completely estranged or some other random complication. The tom had come under the realization more than once that the topic could be a kind of touchy subject.

They listened with brief nod, his ears flicking with a slight mumble of amusement. And then at the question, Exolas seemed to hesitate for a moment. Though, after a moment, he gave a small noncommittal noise and buckled. "Not particularly, or, with my parents, when I was living with them. I'm afraid that I couldn't care less whether they were alive or not -- though, when I left they were still alive," he said, his voice tinged with a prickle of bitterness. Maybe it was more directed at the fact that he wished he could go back, then, to do things a bit differently.
And then, with a much more soft expression, he added, "I had an elder sister. We were close, until we parted." He left the comment lay flat, giving a small sort of sigh. "If things had been different, I would have loved for her to be here."
Randall listened, his expression sympathetic as he let Exolas explain their own family situation. "Oh. I'm really sorry to hear that, I know I'd be heartbroken if I was split from one of my siblings. Like I said, we fight but I don't know what I'd do without them." Randall said, trying to condole his fellow groupmate as best he could.
Still, he couldn't help but feel a hint of curisoity in spite of the sense that the topic might have been terribly touchy, and he fought with himself for a second over whether asking was even worth it. However, curiosity trumped all, and so very gently he asked, "Any reason in particular you two parted ways? It's okay if you don't want to talk about it, but I was just wondering since you said you two used to be close."

He didn't seem to respond with a sort of negative reaction to the question, only bearing a tired expression. Their ears flicked slightly as they considered an answer, before settling on one he could be comfortable with. "I was a terrible brother," he said, not caring entirely the light he was seen in. In fact, if anything, he would prefer people to know that he had been a bit selfish when it had mattered most. Maybe that was a little part of him, for wanting to deter others, though.
With a sigh, he added with a voice full of longing, "In short, I turned her away when she needed me most. She was the brightest in my family. She could make even the grumpiest of cats smile -- and I can attest, because I was particularly sour when I was growing up. Our parents didn't recognize that in her as useful, though. She made them upset one day, and..." he trailed off, for a moment feeling hesitant. Exolas fixed his gaze away, then, staring ahead with a slightly sour expression. "Well, they were cruel to us. And to her more than me. And I looked the other way. I'd give anything, my life included, if I could have done things different."
"...It's hard to always be a good older sibling. Even harder when you're put in a situation like that. Hard to just be a good person when you're put in a situation like that even, actually." Randall said, a clearly sympathetic tone to his voice as he caught the implications of a bigger and darker picture that he could see hinted at between the tom's words.
"I've always been lucky I've never been put in a spot like that. I know my eldest brother was kind of put between a rock and a hard place with our parents too, but I never even met them. Mostly thanks to him. I know for sure though on my part that I've not always been the best older brother to my younger brothers and sisters though. And like I said, I've never been put in a situation half as bad as that." The tom explained, trying his best to empathize with Exolas' plight, but not beyond realizing that in many ways their situations were very different. Randall had the boon of having been mostly sheltered his entire life, if there had been tough and painful choices, it had always been handled by his older siblings who had always done well by him. Ironically, Randall couldn't help but wonder for a moment if Atlan and Vincent wouldn't have had better advice for the other feline.
After a breif pause, Randall thought a moment, before another question entered his mind. One which he was sure to ask gently, figuring that otherwise the question might come off as more callous than he intended. "So, do you know where she now, or have any clue what she might be doing?"
