Here on Classic we understand that sometimes life can get difficult and we struggle. We may need to receive advice, vent, know that we are not alone in our difficult times, or even just have someone listen to what's going on in our lives. In light of these times, we have created the support threads below that are open to all of our members at any time.
[To "celebrate" Ratstar's one-year anniversary of being Summerclan's Leader, I've decided to finally get to a thread that I've been putting off for a looooong while. This is, for all intents and purposes, a flashback thread of events that occurred roughly one year ago.]
Rateye wasn't really sure what was going on. The moment he had admitted his dreams to that strange group of cats, they had declared him their...leader? And before he could even blink, they had practically carried him out of the twolegplace with them. Too bewildered to argue, the scraggly brown tabby followed them, only half-hearing their explanations of the wild clans beyond the mountains, and this 'Starclan' that had chose him though his dreams, and how there was now going to be some sort of ceremony to make it official. The whole thing seemed almost too fantastical to be real, but was there any other explanation for how they had all known exactly what he had been dreaming lately? Rateye had never been one to believe in fate or destiny before, but...
Tentatively, cautiously, he approached the small lake in front of him, his heart beating so loudly in his chest that the rouge was sure the others could hear it. "Jus' touch the water with ya nose?" Taking in a breath, he took a seat on the frost-covered grass and leaned down.
When he opened his single eye again, a translucent cat was standing in front of him. The quiet poolside had been transformed completely; it was now the same starry landscape he had seen night after night. But for the first time, he could see the ghost in front of him clearly; a sleek, gorgeous silver tabby she-cat, one that he immediately recognized. "I've seen ya before, in the dreams I've had. The ones that led me 'ere."
The she-cat grinned at that, her emerald eyes sparkling in glee. "Yes, that's right! It was difficult for us to reach you in twolegplace, but here we can speak freely. Welcome to Starclan, Rateye. We've...I've been waiting for you for a long, long time. My name is Beautifulgift, and it's sort of my fault you're here right now." Being met with a look of confusion from Rateye, she continued; "You see, I ran away from Summerclan a very long time ago. I had just lost my last family in the clans, so instead I chose to follow the cat I loved to twolegplace. My bloodline continues to this very day...with you. We are kin, which is why Starclan first took notice of you, but not quite why they chose you. That's something you'll have to discover for yourself. Tell me, did your new clanmates tell you what happens in this ceremony?" At a loss for words, Rateye just shook his head, and Beautifulgift giggled softly.
"Then don't sweat the details. We'll take it from here."
Before Rateye could react, Beautifulgift leaned forward to touch her nose to Rateye's forehead. Suddenly a strange feeling of calm, greater than any he'd ever known, washed over the tom. "With this life," she meowed, "I give you Perseverance. You have suffered great hardship in your life already, so you should know better than most that no matter where you go, there will always be death, tragedy, and sorrow. That's just how the world is sometimes. But even in the darkest of moments, when everything seems at it's bleakest, you must never give up. From here on, you will have the power to build a brighter future for both yourself and those around you. I believe you can do it, Rateye. Because no matter what hardships may come your way, as long as you keep pushing forward, there will be no obstacle too great for you to overcome."
The feeling radiation throughout Rateye's body was indescribable. He felt as if he could run to the horizon and back, leap higher than the treetops, or fight an army of gang members in the twolegplace. Nothing could stop him or stand in his way. And this was the power he had to use this Summerclan group? "A brighter future..." He muttered to himself as Beautifulgift pulled away, glancing up to look her in the eye. "I'll try an' make ya proud, granny." Beautifulgift beamed, but didn't say anything more, instead turning around to walk away, back into what Rateye had just noticed was a sea of starry figures watching them. The she-cat strode forward to join them, only pausing briefly to give a fond lick on the head to the next feline that stepped forward. One that Rateye would most definitely know. biyuu ☆彡
Dream purred as she stepped forward, her tabby pelt glittering with stars. "My son," she said, giving him an affectionate lick on the cheek. "My only regret in life is that I was never able to spend as much time with you as I had hoped. I worried so much watching from above, wondering every day if that would be the day you would join me here..." She shook her head and blinked to dispel the tears beginning to form in her eyes. "But I needn't have worried, in the end. My mother is right about you."
Dream took a few moments to compose herself, then gently touched noses with her son. "Rateye, the gift I give you is the gift of protection. The people of SummerClan—your people—rely on you now for guidance. There were many times in my life up here that I wanted to hold you, bear your burdens for you, but I was unable to do so. With this gift, I give you the power to do for them what I could not do for you."
Rateye's breath caught in his throat, and his heart leapt in his chest. Despite everything that happened in the past couple hours, everything that had been completely fantastical and had defied all logic, this was the moment where he couldn't believe his eye. And yet, almost paradoxically, the moment where he truly realized how real all of this was. "M-ma...?" He didn't even notice that he had started crying. How long had it been since he'd last saw her face? He had been just a 'lil kit. He remembered begging, pleading for Dream to wake up, to open her eyes again, to the point where his father had to physically drag him off of her cold body.
Then, he suddenly felt the warmth of her lick on his cheek, and the cold memory shattered. "Ma! Momma!" The tom immediately lunged forward to embrace her, taking in her soft, familiar scent. When she moved to touch noses with him, Rateye accepted the life almost desperately. Their people. He still didn't quite understand what made this Summerclan lot so special, but if his mother insisted that he protect them, he would do so until his final breath. Anything for her. "Anythin' fer you, Ma...I swear t' ya." Cleaver
Rateye had just enough time to finish speaking before a massive brown-and-white mottled tom galloped to meet him. Crooked stars hung from his long, ragged coat, rattling as he ran. He nudged Dream aside and thrust his muzzle against Ratstars', wild eyes full of thousands of secrets peering straight through the new leader's soul.
"A strong spirit," he rumbled, and then he laughed, his long muzzle parting in a wolfish grin as he cackled to the other dead. "I am Tensay! I was rogue like you, then Summer make me medicine cat. I lead clan then, you lead clan now. But first, but first, you need," he cocked his head, considering, "more life!"
He pressed his nose harder against Ratstar's nose, forging their connection. "This life I give you for assertiveness. You know what is best! You tell them, and they listen! If they don't, say it again, LOUDER!" Tensay's vocie was already booming, but he shuddered with the power of his shout. His friends used to joke distant clans could hear him speak, but now his call resonance thorough the stars.
Rateye took an apprehensive step backward as suddenly a different ghost pushed way too close into his personal space, glancing over to his mother with confused concern as...Tensay introduced himself. But as the Medicine Cat spoke, Rateye allowed himself to relax, smiling slightly at the other tom's mannerisms. It certainly reminded him of other rouges he'd met. Perhaps they weren't too different after all. He winced slightly at the force Tensay put on his poor nose, he accepted the life nevertheless, even as his ears rang with the shouting. Assertiveness was definitely be something he'd need, if he was going to lead anyone at all. "YES, SIR!" He yelled in joking reply, chuckling softly.
Next up was a small light brown she cat with blue eyes. As she moved her steps were light like a dancer, moving to a rhythm no one else could hear but her.
"Hello Rateye." She said politely. "You are new to the clan, like I was once upon a time. But this is an opportunity for you to learn, and meet new cats, and a new life. So with this life, I give you curiosity. Do not see your lack of experience or knowledge in something as a barrier, but an opportunity." She meowed as she touched noses with him
Rateye watched almost entranced as Tinydancer approached; he could almost hear the music that matched her light, rhythmic steps. When the she-cat presented her life, he nodded in agreement before accepting it graciously. Curiosity was something he already had a lot of; the stories the patrol had told him about life in Summerclan had flooded his imagination with the possibilities. But it had also previously been a luxury, when trying to explore or discover something in the twolegplace almost always led to a bad conclusion. This life was a weight off of his chest, one that made him feel so light and airy that he could probably match her dance step-by-step. Jadie
The next cat to appear was an ancient gray tabby she-cat. She was thin, demure and walked with a slight limp, but her hazel eyes were bright and vibrant, her tail standing straight in the air, the picture of confidence
"You're such a darlin,' ya know that?" She purred warmly, brushing her cheek against his, "So handsome and strong! If I was still walkin' when you was born, Ida eaten ya right up. I'm Preciousstone, your mama's daddy's grandma's... uh... great great sommat, and the life I give to you is Faith. Not just in StarClan but to ya friends and family that still are walkin.' Ya got a great Clan lookin' after ya, don't ever doubt em..."
Preciousstone looked shifty eyed for a second, like there was something more she wanted to say, but she thought better of it and held her tongue, "... I'll keep watchin' over ya and your many little 'uns to come."
"Aw shucks, granny, ya gonna make me blush..." He shrunk away like an embarrassed little kit under the elderly she-cat's doting, flushing under his fur at the unexpected praise. Rateye couldn't help but notice how her accent almost perfectly mimicked his own. Had Preciousstone originally come from twolegplace herself? Regardless, at least the tom knew he wouldn't be in want for grandmas when he eventually kicked the bucket. When he accepted the life, he felt a warm, comforting aura envelop him. He got so lost in the feeling that he nearly missed her last comment, his brain taking a moment to register the words. "W-wait...what did ya mean by many? Granny? Granny?!" But his questions were only met by the old she-cat's laughter as she padded away. Honeystorm
