It was the day after the announcement concerning SummerClan's new deputy. Dustfeather sat eating a cold mouse that had been left over from the night before. He hadn't felt like eating then and had waited until the morning. The news of the new deputy had made him lose his appetite but now the rumblings in his stomach had returned with a vengeance. Rosethorn hadn't chosen him for a patrol this morning but he decided he wasn't going to hang about the camp when SummerClan needed strong warriors especially right now.
As he rose to his feet and stretched, trying to decide where he'd go to hunt and patrol, his eyes spotted Largelight on the other side of the camp. He hadn't thought much about her when she first arrived in SummerClan but she really surprised him in their most recent battle. Perhaps he should get to know her a little more. It would be nice to have someone else along with him today on his impromptu hunt and patrol. Before he realized it, he found himself crossing the camp with his tail waving to greet her.
Largelight was resting in a sunny patch of the field, casually grooming her long, fluffy tan fur while taking a break from her Garden Keeper duties. There wasn't all too much for them to do during Leafbare; mostly just keeping the gardens clean of debris, while keeping an eye out for any extra herbs that Graythorn might need. Any extra time she had was usually spent gathering fresh bedding and cleaning out the dens, or chatting with her friends Pantherclaw, Poppymask, and Mudthistle. When the cold weather began arriving, the former kittypet had panicked a little; she had never really experienced being cold before in a twoleg nest, but actually, it wasn't as bad as she thought! She had survived her first wild winter, clear and true!
Hearing the sound of approaching pawsteps, she glanced up, her eyes widening in slightly surprise upon seeing it was Dustfeather greeting her. The Senior warrior had been quite dismissive of her when she first arrived for being a kittypet, but over the past several moons, she was certain her tenacity had impressed him somewhat. She wasn't sure if she could call them friends just yet, but they were certainly on friendlier terms with one another. "Good morning, Dustfeather," she greeted with a smile, as cheerful and sweet as ever. "How are you doing today?"

"Good morning, Largelight," the gray tabby warrior meowed returning her greeting. "As for how I'm doing..." He stopped suddenly realizing he couldn't spill his guts about how he felt about their new deputy to her without pushing her away. And for some reason which surprised him, he cared. "I'd be doing a lot better when Newleaf gets here. I'm tired of this cold weather," he replied quickly changing what he was going to say. "So how about yourself? You seem to be coping well despite the cold."
(Just wondering - is your new avatar Largelight and Dustfeather?)
"I guess I am, though I suppose my long fur helps a bit with that," Largelight replied with a soft giggle, lifting her paw up to gently catch a snowflake that was fluttering in the air. "It's quite an experience being out in the cold for once, but I can see how it could get a bit old year after year." This time roughly four seasons ago, she had been bored watching the snow fall from the warm and comfort of her perch. What a difference now. "I definitely miss all of the flowers. The territory is beautiful in Newleaf and Greenleaf, don't you think?"

Never really considering the 'beauty' of nature most of his life, Dustfeather shrugged. "I suppose," he meowed. Then thinking quickly so as not to put Largelight off he added, "Each season has a beauty of it's own, don't you think? Even Leafbare. I like how the snow covers drab things and makes them sparkle. Remember that snow which fell a few days ago? It coated every little branch the trees have and then when the sun came out - it was just dazzling." He surprised himself. He did like how the sun shone off the snow but he never really thought a whole lot about it then. But then again no one had ever challenged him to think about it before, until now. He smiled a little smile at Largelight.
When he turned to look back at her, the Garden Keeper was staring at Dustfeather with wide, astonished green eyes. "Wow!" She exclaimed, grinning in amazement at the tom. "That was really poetic of you, Dustfeather! I've never thought about it like that before!" Largelight certainly never expected the older tom to say something like that. It was part of the reason she always tried to get to know him a bit more - he was just so interesting once you got past his grumpy demeanor. "And it's even more beautiful watching all of the kits run around in the snow," she added with a giggle. "They always seem to have so much fun; I bet you have a lot of memories playing like that too, don't you?"

He remembered a time when kits were a pleasure for him to watch. He even dreamed of having kits of his own one day. But lately they seemed more of a nuisance to him. Am I becoming like my nephew, Graythorn? He shook the mental thought away as another one took it's place. His kithood was unlike most. He grew up traveling around outside of SummerClan with his father and grandfather. His sister, Gentlebreeze, was with them too. His mother had died during the journey and he had very little memory of her at all. Much of his younger days were spent traveling.
"I didn't play too much when I was little," he meowed, his eyes seemingly distant with his thoughts. "Not many remember this - I was born outside of SummerClan although I have SummerClan blood. My parents and grandfather were on some sort of journey, a kind of quest at the time, so much of my kithood was spent traveling." In his mind loomed a much younger Bonefang and his grandfather, Hawkstar. The latter was strong and stately. He was so proud of his heritage.
