strawberrycupid a thread for Nightfury and Sunnysmiles if you want it
It had been a long time since he tried to be romantic. Even when he was with his first mate, he was always more affectionate and appreciative than romantic. Still, he wanted to show Sunnysmiles that she did mean something to him. Maybe she would never mean the same thing to him as Multiplesouls, but she was certainly different. She had something about her... maybe it was the optimism, or her foolish persistence to resist when he wanted to keep his head down. He knew he needed to show his appreciation somehow, so he told her to find him near the SunClan side of the White Tree as the sun set. Being it was so far away from the camp, it was one of the few areas spared from the fire. Things still looked more or less normal there, provided you didn't look towards SunClan's territory. He made a simple set up for their night, only bring some pray and finding a patch of grass shielded from the wind. He sat there in silence until he heard a cat rustling through the grass.

(YAAAAASSSSSS)
They were set up for failure. Sunnysmiles wasn't sure how their partnership lasted so long. Even though they were married in the eyes of the Sun God, it didn't really feel like a conventional marriage. They weren't lovey dovey, hadn't gone a date, and she was one of the few of her siblings who didn't have kits yet. It was slow going, and everyday Sunnysmiles wondered if Nightfury was gonna leave. He didn't go, and neither did she.
Her wounds were healing nicely. She wasn't strong enough to heal fast like him and too compassionate to try and save her own skin. The ash coated camp kept irritating her wounds and throat, but she didn't let it show. Nightfury probably noticed. So the walk into what was usually normal territory was a relief. Sunnysmiles didn't need to hold the weight of the world on her shoulders, she could relax just a little. The grass rustled, and she came face to face with him. The orange tabby looked at everything, perhaps too quickly as she tried to piece things together. No one really did anything for her, she was always doing things for others. It took her off guard. Sunnysmiles let out a purr, moving to sit next to Nightfury. "What's all this for?" It may have been not much to anyone else, but it meant a lot to her, her voice betraying her surprise.
He still felt a lingering feeling of selfishness and guilt from that day. While everyone else stayed and tried to help their clanmates escape, he did what Toxicity taught him to do: fight for yourself. And he did just that. He fled and left his clanmates to fend for themselves. It came back to bite him later. It took him a while to find them in MoonClan's territory, and his wanderings in their own territory left burned patches all over his skin, but it was nothing compared to what his clanmates endured. Their scratchy voices woke him in the middle of the night to this day, and scars riddled some of their pelts. That poor cat Lionpride... he used to be so much stronger, and all of it was taken away.
He did his best to purr back as Sunnysmiles approached him, but it was obviously somewhat forced. It had been a long time since his last first date, and plain his first first date with his wife. "A thank you." He rumbled, his voice almost entire cleared of the effects of the smoke. "For you." He looked to his paws moved aside the grass to show her a budding plant. Normally, he would have picked it for her, but the territory needed all the help it could get.

She didn't fault him for his actions. Really, she knew she should have done the same thing. Maybe then she'd be of more help now, and she wouldn't have to keep taking vital herbs from someone else. She always tried to stifle the coughs that riddled her.
A thank you? The words rattled around her mind as she slowly came to terms with what this was. For her. For what she had done. Sunnysmiles was too used to having a thankless job, the words she heard enough to where they lost their meaning. But these weren't words, it was an act. When Nightfury moved his paws to show her the plant gently budding from the ground, tears pricked at the corner of her eyes. But it wasn't until one fell that she noticed. "Oh. Sorry." She brushed her paw against one of her eyes. "They're happy. I promise." She rushed those words, not wanting him to worry. "Thank you, I love it." It was a little easier for her to purr, letting her paw brush the plant delicately.
Tears. He made her cry. Like this. The dark tom did not expect it, and would never have predicted it in a million years. He carried a dark, but remorseful, heart, and from what he could tell hers was almost as pure as a kit's. He would have thought that her first tear because of him would fall when... details of how he trained his apprentice came to light, or something along those lines. But this? She had an appreciation for life and for the world that was simply beyond his comprehension. His puzzled look stayed plastered across his face as she wiped another one from her eye and then handled it so delicately. He wanted to save it to let the territory regrow, not for the simple beauty of its existence.
He turned his attention to the simple meal in front of them and pulled her prey to her. "Breathing okay? Eyes good?"

(i'm not crying. you're crying ;~; )
It was almost too pure. The kind who had went through few wrongs, so when they came, they felt so much heavier than she had expected. Maybe with so few, nothing came out right. But a simple picnic, and a little bud, for her was all she needed to turn on the waterworks. "Eyes good, eyes good. Didn't mean to surprise you." The last tear left her eyes and she took a deep breath, clearing her nose to speak again, "Again, sorry. Kind of odd to admit, but no one has really ever done something for me. So I-I really appreciate it."
He had emotional intelligence for most of his life, but since his mate's disappearance it was a skill seldom practiced. He still had some small fraction of what he used to bear, enough to get him by in the initial stages of this relationship. But this? He simply was not equipped for it. His eyes wandered around in search of something else to focus on, something to draw inspiration from, but nothing. Great. His turned back to meal in front of them and shrugged. "Idiots. Sorry." He smiled and rolled his eyes at the thought of no one giving back.

"Thank you, but it's okay." Sunnysmiles took a deep breath, pulling back the last few tears back. She leaned down to take a bite of their meal, suddenly starving. But after swallowing, her gaze found the horizon. How far away it was, and the barren land they were sitting in. "I never asked for anything in return. I've always been happy to help for the sake of helping, not for a reward. But... since we were paired together, I've been thinking about it more. About, being more selfish." Sunny looked back at him quickly, unable to read his expression immediately and her throat suddenly dried up. "I'll stop, but the point is it makes me appreciate something like this all the more. So again, thank you." She briefly considered headbutting him or something in affection, but she wasn't sure how he would react, so her voice went soft and a smile plastered her face instead.
He did what he did best: he listened. He listened to what she said and what went unspoken with all of its subtilties. Sure, he couldn't offer the emotional support that he needed to, but he still offered other ways. He was more of a pragmatist. He looked around himself for any signs of life. And there none aside from the small plants growing at their paws. Perfect. "That is not selfish. That is looking after yourself before others. That is fine. Selfishness implies that you took something from someone else when you didn't need it." If anything he played on the other side of this barrier, but he broke it down long ago with his first mate. He returned her smile and took a bite of his prey. "I don't think you could be selfish if you tried."

She was used to standing on her own with these things. Of course, she would have liked some emotional support, but also knew he had his own struggles with emotion. Listening was the first step, and an unbiased ear was more than she could have asked for. She listened to him speak, cocking her head to the side. She knew he was right, that it sounded right, but some part of her didn't wanna admit it. Like she'd be letting go of something if she did.
Her smile brightened when he returned it. "Oh yeah. Well, watch this." Sunnysmiles said with a laugh before quickly leaning down and taking a bite out of his prey. But as she chewed, her playfulness quickly simmered down into guilt. She pushed her piece closer to him. "I feel really bad about that, actually." Her tone a mix of jokiness and seriousness.
Surprise spread across his face as she went to take a bite out of his prey. It was the last thing he expected. He stared at her as she chewed and watched the playfulness drain away from her face. Now that he expected he couldn't help the sly grin that appeared on his face as she pushed the prey back towards him. "I thought you would. As for me..." He hooked her prey with his claws and flung it into his mouth. He quickly set it on the ground and ripped out chunk. "I don't." He pushed the prey back to her and took another bite out of his own prey. "Just... do me a favor and try to be more selfish. I promise it will make you... happier."

Sunnysmiles concerned face quickly shifted to a pout as he smiled at her. She felt bad, the blood settling in her mouth as she swallowed the last bit dryly. Her dark eyes widened and followed his display as he ate a piece of her food. It was fluid, practiced even. Nah, not for this. Just in general. She glossed over it though as her food was pushed back towards her and Nightfury spoke again. It will make her happier? She thought she was, but it's been dawning on her. That she was only pretending to be happy for the sake of everyone else around her. Sunnysmiles thought she knew what happiness was, and now she wondered if the concept had led her astray her whole life.
Still, a smile graced her lips as she stared down at the prey in front of her. "I'll try." She spoke softly, taking a bite of it. The few quiet moments felt like an eternity, but as she swallowed, she looked back up at Nightfury. "Then let's start by staying like this for a little longer, please?"
Really, he found all of her little quirks quite cute. Her little pouts, widening eyes, it was just so different from what he was used to. His former mate didn't share those same little things that just intrigued. He and Fukusu were more alike than they were different, and that was reversed with Sunnysmiles. He couldn't think of one way that they were alike. The fact that they were still together never failed to confound him when he thought deeply about it. But he had no doubt in his mind there was no one in SunClan he'd rather spend his time with. Not that many cats were on that list to begin with, but she topped the list. "Sure..." He paused. "I... appreciate you."

To be honest, Sunnysmiles wasn't sure until today why the pair had stayed together. Out of all the arranged marriages, theirs's was the one that she expected to fall apart immediately. Now, they were one of the few left and appearing at least more compatible than most of the others. It was different for both of them, but she knew she would be in a lot worse shape if it hadn't been for Nightfury. Probably still in the prison. And while he hadn't been what she expected, he also freed her when she didn't even know she was caged. She liked the mystery, the gruff exterior with his quiet emotions. She was still surprised when he said it, but her expression softened. "... Thank you. ... And I appreciate you too."
